I have used Randy many times in the past and am well pleased with his service. Today I called him re my light problem, he happened to be in the area, and came by within 15 minutes. He put 2 new bulbs in my 'tricky' light fixture and said if that didn't work, to call him back. No charge. I did give him a tip because he has always been responsive, honest, hard working, and does a good job.

This is actually the second time I've had Randy over and I will consider him my official "go to guy" for anything I need done around this house. Last time, he trimmed a few skylights that I had installed and also installed a deadbolt lock on a door. This time, though, he installed a closet door. It was a little more complicated than that, since the opening was a bit taller than a standard door. No problem! Randy built down the top so the door fits perfectly! He's a true professional, and explains in great detail what he is going to do and then does it. Since I have no way to lug around a door, I purchased it online and he picked it up for me...no problem. I'm already putting together another list for Randy to knock out in the next couple of weeks! thanks Randy!

Randy King came out to estimate job and said that although it was a big job, that he could handle it. The drywall was protruding in some areas around the windows. My husband, who was a contractor for 27 years, told them how he wanted the trim installed so that we wouldn't have gaps next to the windows that would need filled. Randy and his assistant said they thought it would be better to have the gaps and then caulk because after painting, no one would notice. In retrospect we should have had him stop work at that time. He used too big a nail for the trim and split the wood in many, many places. Some areas he super glued the damage he did to the wood, but not well. The gap on the windows and doors is ridiculous. Had he installed the way my husband suggested we would have had a tight fit . As it is, we are having to remove the trim and reinstall it in almost every door and window. The addition we put on was very costly and the quality of work that Randy King performed was far below the standard we expected. I am very disappointed with the workmanship and the amount of time and effort we are having to put in to correct everything. It wasn't until he left and we looked closely at the work that we realized how bad it was. For the hourly rate he charged, I certainly expected a better outcome. The addition we put on was not started for six years because we had to wait for city sewers to come to our street. Once we broke ground things moved along at a normal pace. We did have to wait for the trim to be done because the tile setter took longer than anticipated because he is a perfectionist and did a wonderful job. My husband and I have redone almost all of the work that Randy King performed at our house. The drywall did stick out in some areas around the windows and doors, but after removing the trim that Randy King installed, we were able to trim the drywall so that it was flush with the windows and reinstall the trim or cut and install new trim on areas where Randy had either split the wood or left too big of a mitered gap. Our painter said that had we left the gaps and caulked them, we would have had to caulk and repaint every year or the caulk would pull away because some of the gaps were so big. Randy King did offer to come back and work for three hours at no additional charge, but based on the work he did the first time, we opted not to accept his offer. We still feel that portion of the money that we paid him should be refunded. I realize that the job was challenging, but stand by the fact that if Randy would have followed my husbands directions ( he was a general contractor for 27 years) this problem would have been avoided. We have fixed the areas to our satisfaction and consider this a lesson learned.

Response from Randy King
The day we arrived to begin work, we were informed that this remodel/addition was in its sixth year. The phrase “remodel from H***” was used and not by us. While we were there, at least, the homeowners were gracious and friendly and my partner and I on several occasions offered our sympathy for what they were going through. Any of the many past customer who have given me straight A reports and 6 straight years of Super Service Awards know that I would not walk away for a 1” gap in my work. I was routinely recutting a half or third of a blade width from pieces to get the best possible fit. The finished results exist the way they do because the framing and windows are so bent and twisted. Windows are installed so that they are not flush with the drywall, sometimes just in a corner or two sides, sometimes all the way around. Door framing was often bent, twisted or not in a flat plane. Floors rose and fell. Those are the gaps at issue. The homeowners suggested that we use hammers to beat, break and crush the edges of the drywall into submission before installation of door and window casing. This would have traded one problem for another, involved hundreds of linear feet, still not blended well and likely tripled (or more) the time involved. In a project that had dragged for years, we figured it was time to make some progress. We were there to install doors and trim and we did so to the best of our abilities under the circumstances. None of these structural problems were evident during my initial walkthrough as there was only raw framing in place. It was only as we imposed finish work on the malformed openings that the problems became so evident. We repeatedly brought issues to their attention as we discovered more and more challenges. We perceived a “do what you can” attitude at the time. The nails we used were standard 2”, 16 gauge finish nails shot from a pneumatic nailer. The same as used to install trim in the vast majority of houses in the last 30 years. When we noticed a bent, missing or otherwise misfired fastener, we dealt with it. We may have honesty missed a few here and there – we shot over 2,000 nails. And I do recall a split that was glued. I would have replaced the entire piece if I didn’t think gluing, clamping and sanding wouldn’t be noticed after painting. We saw them every day we were there. They must have looked at our work if just out of curiosity. The Member did express nervousness at the window gap but seemed satisfied at the time without suggestion that caulk was the lesser of all evils. There were still smiles the day we carried a check and our tools out the door. The work we did was as good as could be done given the situation. The glaring issue is the problems that our work exposed. Any of the little things we may have missed in the course of normal work could have been rectified during the time we offered to give in a return trip. We had already given them a few hours of accumulated over several days and were working at a reduced rate as it was. I can’t get inside The Member’s head but I can imagine that after all the time their large project has taken and after the fundamental issues our work exposed, her frustration and disappointment level is pretty high. She is now getting physically involved herself and may feel that someone needs to be punished. I do feel sick about this situation. It has affected my sleep, my appetite and my general mood. But I don’t feel bad about my work, my standards or the many people I have pleased in the past.

Everything went smoothly. Randy arrived on time and he had the appropriate equipment. He knew what he was doing and got right to it. When finished, he cleaned up after himself and put everything back where it belongs. What more could one want?! I highly recommend Randy for any household repairs.
Description of Work: Cleaned out my ductwork, especially the one from the dryer to the outside. Since we have pets, the ducts seem to get dusty pretty fast, and cleaning them out makes it easier on the furnace and the dryer motors.

Two big thumbs up to Randy King and Scott Sanders!!! Not only was the work that they performed top notch, but their communication was outstanding. What really put them over the top is the fact that they are truly nice guys who care about the work that they do. The area of drywall that they patched is perfect - you can't even tell where there had been openings for the lights. They kept us informed every step of the way. I wish all projects could go this smoothly! I now have the peace of mind that we have a friend in the handyman business!!! They will be our go-to guys from here on out!

Called Randy in a panic at the very last minute on a Friday; he came the next day (which he had hoped would be his first Saturday off in a while) at the agreed upon time with a smile. Had all the tools necessary to perform the work. Very good attention to detail and the cuts are perfect. He had a genius idea to cut an irregular piece of door trim to close a gap where the door trim meets the tile, as well as greatly improving the trim on a laundry chute and everything looks fantastic!! (he even dropped everything and went to purchase the wood trim for the chute). Extremely happy with the overall outcome; already called him again to do some drywall repair in laundry on Fri 7/20. Great job and great attitude, very professional. Thanks Randy, that was a HUGE favor. You're the best.

On Friday morning 07/16/2012, I moved some things to make access to one of the detectors easier for Mr. King. As it turned out, I wasted my time. He did not show up. He did not call. He was aware that we were leaving for the weekend. I though he understood my anxiousness to get the detectors replaced before leaving. I waited until 10:30am before giving up and continuing with our travel plans. Not showing up or even calling demonstrated a complete lack of regard for my time. It was disrespectful and unprofessional. UPDATE: I feel better that he owned up and that he accepted that it was his fault. I think that it shows some integrity. That?s why I?m willing to change the overall experience grade from an ?F? to a ?C?. I also increased his professionalism grade and I would consider using the services in the future.
Description of Work: I have used providers from Angie's List for years and have had great results. I regret that this is the first negative review I've posted. I chose to contact Mr. King because of his A rating and the good reviews from other members. I called him on Monday 07/09/2012 for some help with replacing malfunctioning smoke detectors. I was very pleased with my initial conversation with him. He was pleasant and equally important, available to come to my home on Friday 07/13/2012 to replace the smoke detectors. He suggested I buy the smoke detectors to save time and money and he gave me advice on what kind to buy. The price he quoted was very reasonable. We agreed on a 9am appointment. Because he was so nice during that call is the only reason I gave a D rating in responsiveness. Mr. King was a no-show even though we had a 9am appointment on Friday, 07/13/2012.

This member is absolutely right. I was made aware of this report while on the phone with a customer. I went to my van and sure enough, there was the note face down on the seat. She caught me at an awkward time on the initial call and I made crude notes on whatever was available. I have no excuse. I wish she had phoned me but that's not her responsibility. She may have been more anxious than curious. I'm changing the way I organize things and instituting a policy of confirmation calls. I'm sorry and regretful that this happened.
