Overall we're pleased with the results. To someone who has never seen the ceiling before I don't think they could tell we'd had a water leak and had to cut out the damaged drywall, patch it, re-texture the patch, and paint. If I had to ding these guys for anything it would be for the spots of plaster we found in the carpet and on some furniture after they left. As I said, overall we're pleased and would use them again.

The house is very old and it had some water damage from a roof leak. They came in and did the job in about 4 hours. They came within 20 minutes of their designated time of arrival. They instructed me to wait about 4 weeks before painting. Everything looks very good, and they blended it very well. The price was very reasonable for what they had to do. I was a very positive experience.

Jim's staff were quite punctual arriving early to begin the job. They were also quite professional, finding and repairing cracks in the plaster that even I and my wife had missed. Cleaned up afterwards, leaving the work area as clean as when they began. The foreman even provided advice about primer/sealers for the patch work and how long I should wait before painting the repaired surfaces. All-in-all, Jim Spear's Plastering did a great job. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again--and I will.

I gave them a B on professionalism because the fellows could have cleaned up a little better--I found some plaster splatter on some of the woodwork and walls. It may be that I'm super detailed, because I actually primered and painted the ceiling, so I was working with the same surface they did for days--therefore I saw every little bit of texturing that oversprayed. I highly recommend Mr. Spears and his crew. They are great at their work and followed my directions without trying to "sell me up" or add on anything I didn't want.
Description of Work: I used to be embarrassed about the ceilings in my 82 year old house--they were unevenly textured and showed where countless previous owners had tried to repair water damage. An ice dam formed on my roof and caused the plaster ceiling in the living room to leak and crack . Mr. Spears quoted me in February--right after the storm. When I received the check from the insurance settlement, I wanted to fix my ugly dining room ceiling too so I had him quote repairing both rooms. I didn't have the entire ceiling redone, I just had him patch areas that leaked or where the texturing looked uneven and awful. Once the work was finished, he suggested I primer the ceilings to see if I found anything that needed more attention--and he would come out to fix those areas. I did find a spot or two that needed some more plaster so I called the fellows back. They came back within a day or two and did a great job making the textured ceiling look uniform and repairing the spots that were damaged. It doesn't look new--but I didn't want it to look new--it looks great for a ceiling in an old house.

They did a good job on the demolition and repair. They basically had a portion of the wall torn down and redone. All around, it was an excellent experience with how they went about that process. The price was considerably lesser than what I was anticipating. I did not really take quotations from anybody else, so I have no basis for comparison. As far as I can remember, there were no issues with their punctuality. There was one issue; I had them come back and redo it, and they did that well very quickly. I would rate them highly and would use them again in the future if necessary.

The work went very well. There was a lot of mess, but the guys did a thorough job and were willing to return to fix places they had missed. They really know what they are doing with plaster. Jim's dad, Luther, had done work in our house before, and now Jim has started his own business. When they were finished, the surfaces were ready for us to paint.

Jim was very responsive. I didn't give him a lot of lead time. He provided a quote, but we were unable to coordinate our schedules in order to have the work completed, so I contacted other contractors that may be available from Angies List. After getting quotes from other contractors, I found that the quote from Jim Spears Platering was 225% higher than a quote I recieved from another contractor which I also identified from Angies List. Jim did follow up with me later in an effort to get the work done for me. I sure appreciate that.

When I hired this company, I specifically asked Jim if he had the proper brush and the capability to match the texture pattern in the kitchen. We were finishing a complete kitchen remodel and needed the kitchen ceiling repaired after can lights were installed. He said it was no problem, they had the brush and would match the texture. They came out 4 times and still did not match the texture pattern. The first crew applied texture very thick and said it would shrink as it dried. It didn't. And we were told to sand down the points before painting. The second crew told us they didn't know why the first guys had been given the job and told us the mud had been applied too thick. The second crew scraped off the first application and then made thick patches over the areas that were 2-3 times the diameter of the holes. They applied texture very thin and left the thick patches showing through. They came back and agreed the patches were thick and visible under the too thin texture. They applied more mud, after which the edges of the large patches were still visible and the ceiling was not flat. The owner came on the 4th visit and sanded the patches flat, applied a chemical to keep the mud moist and re-textured the areas. Now the ceiling is flat again (that part is good) but as shown in the attached photo, the texture of the patched areas (center and left side of photo) doesn't match the original semi-circular texture pattern at all (shown in right side of photo). We are left with a ceiling that looks patched and now has huge patches (up to 24" diameter to cover an original 4" diameter hole). Ironically, when I commented to the owner that the ceiling looked patched, he replied that it is patched and that's what we should have expected. That's a different story than when I hired the company and he said it would be no problem to match the original texture. We will now have to have the entire kitchen ceiling scraped and replastered so a single texture pattern can be applied. I regret hiring this company and relying on the owner's word that he can match texture patterns in ceilings. UPDATE: In response to Provider Response: Unfortunately, there were no discussions regarding retexturing the whole ceiling at the time of estimate, only the assurance that Spears Plastering could match texture. That's why I hired this company. I specifically called Jim back and asked if he had the proper brush and could match existing texture before the job was started. He assured me they had the right brush and would match texture. There were no prior patches on ceiling except for a 1"x2" line where previous home owner finger textured a small crack. Patches that stick out like a sore thumb were done by Spears Plastering where they textured and retextured 4 times as shown in photo. 4" can light holes are now patches up to 24" in diameter. As an honest assessment, I have tried to present the good and the bad. You did come out to the house 5 times. Because of that, I tried to keep working with you, hoping to get a good result. If you would consider the customer's view, you might consider that repeat visits were a great inconvenience when the job should have been done right the first time. The photo shows the facts: your company did a poor texture job. If you are serious about rectifying the situation, I would appreciate even a 50% refund to go toward getting the kitchen ceiling fixed for my newly remodeled kitchen. Thank You.

responce to this is,ive made 8 trip's to this home, had the conversation of we can match it close!! to get a ceiling uniform it needs to be skimmed and sanded ,painted with sealer, then retexture the whole ceiling, there are patch's on this ceiling that were not done by me or my company that stick out like a sore thumb.and have done everything they've ask of me,with the exception of retexturing the whole ceiling,if a customer is not happy with the work i don't exspect them to pay for the work!if they need or want a new uniform ceiling i will gladly give them a free estimate.sorry for the enconvience, and any loss in my workmanship, from this point on, i will not try to match a texture that has been patched repetedly simply because of the outcome and the reaction from customer,s .again thank you for your time, Jim Spears, any question's to this responce please feel free to call my office

Only the loose plaster from between the lath was removed both in the ceiling and under the window. Plaster under the window was not totally removed to where it was firmly attached. A large crack in the corner of the wall just 3 1/2 inches from edge of plaster patch was not repaired. The homeowner called the owner's attention to the fact that old plaster was not completely removed from between the lath before new plaster was applied. His response was not to fuss at the workers, they knew what they were doing and might walk off the job if confronted. The workers left the surfaces of the plaster patches very rough. The owner made an inspection several days after the work was completed. He claimed that after painting, the rough surface would look just like the adjacent wall, and that if the surface was too smooth, paint would just slide off it. He claimed the deep crack in the corner of the wall under the window was just a surface paint crack. He said all unsound plaster had been removed. This was untrue. As for removing all plaster from between the lath, he stated that only loose plaster needed to be removed and that when the new plaster was applied, the remaining plaster (which by his implication was not loose) would be shoved up so that the new plaster could key into the lath. He made comments that the homeowner could not be argued with, that there is a difference between being perfectionistic and being ridiculous, and that he was tired of home owners telling him how to do his job. The only concession he made to the homeowner was to have his workers return and smooth the surfaces.
Description of Work: Services were to include removal of ceiling patch and wall patch under window, plaster and white coat smooth. Ceiling patch had already been removed by homeowner down to where plaster was firmly attached to the lath. Assurances were made verbally that the plaster between the lath would be cleaned out.

We have hired Spears in the past and we were happy to hire them again. Jim was very respectful of our budget and we feel as though they provided excellent value. We hired them due to their skill and expertise, and professionalism. They really did an excellent job and matched the original plaster work in our house (built in 1940) with the addition we did. Jim, his son Jimmy, and all the other guys, are equal parts skilled and creative/artistic. They work fast and efficiently, and they are always careful to clean up after themselves. We highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We made an addition and several renovations to our old home. Jim and his crew came in to mud & tape a new bedroom and laundry room. They plastered (textured) an addition on the main floor of our house, the upstairs hallway, as well as made several repairs to the original plaster work. We added an archway to our dining room and they were able to apply plaster to make it match other arches in the original architecture of our home. They also trimmed in a window with a round-over detail so that it matched other windows.

It was a very complicated job required some masonry, carpenter and plastering work. They came out 2-3 times to talk over the job with the other providers and to make sure the job was going to go over well. There was some structural work that needed to be done so they did halt the job for this to make sure the job was done right. I am really pleased with the work. They were prompt in providing an estimate and were able to schedule my work right away. I was a little worried at first because their workers are a little scary looking, but I found them to be polite, punctual and very professional. They did such a good job, you cannot even tell where they did the plastering. We thought we were going to have to repaint the room, which would have required moving thousands of books, so we were thankful they did the work so smoothly. They did wonderful work, and it was money well spent. Because of the age of our home, they had to work with very old plaster, and we couldn't be happier.
