The plaster on our bathroom ceiling was cracked in a few spots and we had a small hole in our garage wall from a previous plumbing repair. I was worried that I would not be able to find a contractor that would be willing to do such a small job. I called Johnathan and he came to our house that day to give us an estimate. We scheduled the work to be done three weeks from that day. Johnathan arrived on time and did an excellent job. He communicated by phone and email. He scraped the plaster off of the bathroom ceiling and patched the ceiling and walls for a smooth finished. He also repaired the hole in the garage. Both jobs were completed within two days. Johnathan always cleaned up before leaving each day. He is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Description of Work: Repaired holes in plaster in garage. Scraped bathroom ceiling, patch smooth.

At first punctual, then had some health issues that kept him off the job. It was frustrating because he didn't finish the job until the following spring. Next time I would suggest a start date and finish date and if the contractor doesn't finish in the allotted time, have a certain amount of money reimbursed to you for each day over. As the project went on it seemed he was less interested and had other jobs that were on his plate. He is a good worker and does a good job, but he didn't stay on the project consistently.

She is accurate. The winter hit us faster than I expected. When I originally bid the job it was just replacing the windows. I found a 2 foot by 4 foot hole in their wall that someone else installed siding over. I rebuilt a large part of the front of their house and this threw me off schedule. I don't think that the member considered how much that affected the timeline. Once winter came I had little choice but to finish in the spring. At least they had their first winter in their home without wind blowing through their home thanks to me.

If you are looking for someone that can do it all, and do it right, you have found him. He has been wonderful to work with. Not a single complaint.
Description of Work: Pulled up tile and replaces with hardwood and fixed spacial on my ceiling. It matches PERFECTLY. He also helped me out of a bad situation with my carpet and introduced me to a fantastic man to lay the new carpet. Johnathan is a class act.

I did not end up hiring Jonathan, but I wish I had. I really, really, really wish I had. I ended up doing the job myself but it was such a huge project with so many problems that it was NOT worth it to do it myself. Take it from me... do not tackle chimney repair (even tuck pointing) unless you really know what you're doing and have training and even then... just hire someone who knows what they're doing. It's worth the money for chimneys because not only is masonry difficult in general, but add being up high on a roof and trying to keep your balance while working and it's just a headache. Jonathan called me back promptly and came right on time for my appointment. I literally called at least 20 contractors from Angie's List about a few projects I needed done before a house sale and Jonathan was one of the VERY FEW to call me back and show up on time. I was grateful and impressed with him just for that... but then he also was very knowledgeable about all 3 projects I needed done and gave me some excellent advice on what to do. He took the time to explain to me what was wrong, what he thought needed done, and broke down some of the costs for me right then. He also sent me a written quote later that was actually cheaper than we had discussed during the free quote appointment. I will be keeping Jonathan in mind for any future projects. He is knowledgeable, professional, and punctual!

Johnathan has done several small jobs inside and outside my house. Overall I am very happy with his work. In the most recent job on my front porch, Johnathan did not finish the project because of his limited resources and working experience on concrete. However, he is honest and sincere. He told me his concerns from the beginning. It is my fault that I did not listen and insisted him to give a try. So my lesson is: if Johnathan is confident, then you can rest assured that he will do a good job. If Johnathan is hesitating, then you should not push him to do it. Overall, he is a very reliable handyman and a nice person.

This was a very kind and honest review. I was worried waiting for this review because I failed this member. She insisted that I help her and I should have stood my ground and said no. Lesson learned. She was very gracious to give me A's for the other work that I did complete for her. She did find someone to complete my recommendations.

OUTSTANDING!!! I would highly recommend Johnathan (and his wife) to anyone. If you look at his Angie's List profile, he has a lot of positive feedback and is clearly busy. I emailed him a few weeks back and he replied immediately letting me know he was in the middle of a job, but didn't want to lose touch with me and said he would contact me the following week. He did. I exchange some emails with him about the job and needing it done by the end of June. He became suddenly available due to his current work on and outside project being delayed due to weather. He came on a Friday evening to give me an estimate and stated he could start the following day if we opted to go with him. We did. His quote included labor and any material costs he could determine at the time and made sure I understood that he still had to get the underlay figured out which would add to the cost. I was ok with that due to the quick availability. He actually went to his normal supplier that Saturday morning, decided that the cost was clearly too high and went to Lowes for the same material and saved me 50% off of what his normal supplier would have charged. He was very upfront with information as other items/issues/options as they became apparent. The fridge was in the house when i bought it and never been moved. He found the power outlet it was plugged into to be clearly inadequate and showed me. We went through a couple of options and landed on running new wire to electric panel. He was able to quote me the cost of that additional job immediately and he did it. I asked if he could move the stove power outlet as well and quoted that addition and completed it. He went out of his way to keep me informed of progress, let me know of any issues he found as he removed the original carpet and exposed the floor, he offered up options, and best of all he found ways to save me money on materials. He clearly takes pride in his work and wants the final product to look good for the customer. Again, OUTSTANDING!!!
Description of Work: Kitchen floor replacement. Johnathan moved our stove and fridge, removed carpet/padding, scrapped surface clean, installed underlay board, puttied any gaps/nail divots, layed vinyl tiles that I purchased at Menard's, grouted, baseboards, and move 2 electrical outlets.

Mr. Smith, the owner, and his crews of workers (including his wife) did an excellent job for us with all the repairs that were required due to a bad water pipe leak in our upstairs bathroom. The kitchen ceiling was severely damaged and needed to be replaced. While the ceiling was out, we asked him to also replace the old galvanized water supply and drainage pipes that were over 90 years old. He did so very economically with pez plastic piping and replaced some drainage piping with pvc piping. Our water pressure and drainage has never been better; a vast improvement in both! He also replaced the kitchen ceiling lighting and the kitchen faucets, and many of the galvanized piping in our basement. His pricing was fair and reasonable, and done in a very reasonable amount of time. Yes, I would call on him again, and already have to replace a toilet on the first floor, which he did amazingly well on the Saturday morning before this past Christmas. Reliable, efficient, responsive, and reasonably priced work.

I'm very disappointed to receive such a low grade. I'm not only the salesman but I'm the installer too. I don't show up in a suit or keep a stock of business cards and propaganda. I install some of the best replacement windows you can buy, Simonton. What I wrote my notes on should be of little concern. It was a sheet of printer paper that had the member's information on it. I emailed a professional, itemized invoice that also included installing a new bath tub and ceramic tub surround. I hope the member found someone to help her.

So far, it is going very well. Johnathan (the proprietor) is very calming, very knowledgeable, and very picky about his own work. He also has had excellent decorating ideas. The job is not finished yet because it is a BIG job, but so far, he has been a God-send through all of this.
Description of Work: I needed some work done to my late father's house before we could put it up for sale, so many things needed to be done: carpeting removed and flooring put in, new carpeting, the ceiling fixed, a bathroom gutted and fixed, power washing of the siding, windows fixed, just a lot of fixing and renovating.

Well I thought I already sent in a review, but I can't find it, so this may be a repeat. My late father's house needed a lot of work before we could put it up for sale. I hired Johnathan Smith, proprietor of Insured Services to do the work, which is still ongoing. But, so far, I can say this: Johnathan Smith is very easy to work with. The death of my father and trying to get his house ready for sale has been very difficult for me, and I have never done any major work on a house or hired a contractor. Johnathan has been a very calming presence in all of this. He is very honest about the work to be done but not pushy about getting it all done (I have a budget of what I can spend to fix up my dad's house). He ALWAYS answers his phone immediately; he is willing to go shopping with his clients, and I have to say, I really admire his decorating ideas! The work is not over. There is still a lot to be done, but he is probably going to finish ahead of schedule. He installed hardwood in the dining room and made it match beautifully with the hardwood in the living room. The floors look just beautiful! They seem to glow! I can tell that Johnathan takes great personal pride in doing a wonderful job. He will admit that his quote will not be the cheapest, but it also feels like he is doing this as a labor of love. And, also, just yesterday, I went to go see the house. I hit my knuckle on the way into the house and cut myself. Because of lymphedema issues, any injury to my right hand can be problematic. As I was washing the cut, Johnathan got a band-aid AND Neosporin, so the cut was instantly taken care of on the spot. Not only that, but I accidentally bled on our new and still sticky hardwood floors. Because we couldn't step on them, I couldn't reach one of the blood droplets, so Johnathan even cleaned up my own blood for me! The job is not finished, but so far, I only have excellent things to say about Insured Services, and Johnathan.
Description of Work: Added hardwood. Refinished all other hard wood. Fixed ceiling. Still in progress (this is a big job): repairs to outside of house, fixing a basement leak, putting in flooring and carpeting. Renovating bathroom. There's more; I just can't think of everything now.

Jonathan Smith with Insured Services provided the quote for the scope of work requested and he was very reasonable with his pricing. He was very professional and very personable in his dealings with my mother-in-law who occupies the home where the work was done. This was an insurance repair so complete documentation of the work was provided to us by Jonathan via photos showing exactly what work he performed throughout the project. He even brought flooring samples to the house for my mother-in-law to choose from prior to beginning the project. This job required removal of the about half of the kitchen cabinets and old vinyl, cutting out the damaged subflooring down to the floor joists and replacing the damaged materials with new in two separate rooms. He even extended the scope of the repair work into an adjoining pantry that was not part of the original estimate - and did not charge extra for that. His time frame estimate was a little longer than others who have larger teams, but he still hit his original estimated completion date. I prefer quality over speed. We were very happy with the work he performed and would definitely use him again if the need arises.

Description of Work: electrical- my wife has these little houses she keeps on top of kitchen cabinets. They are lighted and therefore we had cords hanging on both sides of counter. Johnathan installed 4 outlets so now she can plug in on top of cabinets. Wife loves this -enough said. tile work- Johnathan installed a 14 inch backsplash around the counter. and framed it on the corners. The spacing is true and the grout job looks great. He even inlaid 3 bronze tiles into the pattern above the stove. carpentry- Johnathan installed crown moulding in our kitchen. The seams are tight on all corners both inside and outside.

I usually try to do this sort of job myself, but I was at a loss on this one. I had run into a dead end with every idea I had come up with. Feeling that this one might be beyond my expertise, I decided to call in reinforcements. Johnathan answered the first time I called, set up an appointment for the next day, and showed up right on time. He was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. He quickly determined the best plan of action for this job, and ensured me that I could handle this job. No charge for the advice or the visit. Overall, I am pleased with the work, he had a lot of work cut out for him with this job. The garage looks super nice. He does seem to pride himself on being slow, as he told me many times over that he is slow but takes care of his customers. I did not think he was all that slow considering the extent of job that needed to be done, but I do not have any prior experience as to how long such a project would normally take! The job took right about 30 days from start to finish. He cleaned up really well after himself , nothing left behind , I was happy with that. During our final "walk through" we noticed a miniscule dent in the service door and I was willing to let it go, but he was not and replaced the door with a new one, that was very nice of him. I am happy with the services performed. Thanks Johnathon!
Description of Work: I needed to get my garage from my recently purchased home overhauled. It needed a new garage door, siding, new service door, new window, and needed to be reinforced due to age, water and termite damage. Johnathon came out and provided an estimate for me. The price was initially too high for my budget (not an unreasonable price overall, I just did not have the funds available), so I contacted a friend of the family who was going to do it at a super good cost, but it would likely have taken a really long time to finish as it would have been a side job of his. I was ready to go ahead with this route when Johnathon emailed me wondering if I had decided on a person for the job. I explained my circumstances to him, he then stated that he could work with me on the price as jobs available were off to a slow start. He came back with a bid of 6,500.00 with 10% off for being an Angie's list member, bringing the total down to 5,850.00. I was able to swing this cost, so I went ahead and chose him for the job.He started March 28th, 2012. Upon tearing out insulation and some cheap-o wall covering (I don't know what it is called ) he was probably kicking himself in the pants at the work that lay ahead of him! He told me he considered giving my deposit back after seeing this mess. The garage was pretty beat up underneath all the cover ups from the prior owners. He went ahead and started by reinforcing a lot of the studs with 2x4's (? not very terminology refined in the carpentry area), tearing out the rotted out wood on the ground of the garage and replacing it with fresh wood. I went from a one car garage (one car garage door , the garage is big enough to be a two car ) to a two car garage door which entailed him tearing out virtually the whole front face of my garage and reframing it. He installed a new service door, looks good, closes tightly and securely. He subcontracted out the installation of the garage door and opener. This turned out very good. He had to do some re-wiring and replaced some old outlets with new, everything works well there. He added an outlet in the center of the garage. Rehung my flourescent lights to more appropriate positions. He built a glass block window and installed it , it looks really nice. The siding was subcontracted out, looks nice. I purchased a service door light and a motion sensor light for the front and he installed these, they work fine.

I had bid this job at $7,800 originally. I didn’t think it was that bad at first and needed to keep my schedule full so I made the member a deal to get the job. Everything was covered with upholstery foam that I had to remove before starting. I did not realize that 3 of the walls’ bottom plates of the garage were rotted away and 2 inches of the bottom of each stud was gone! I did not contract to do any of that work and I knew the member had met their budget. I could not justify doing just the work I was contracted for, though. The member’s garage was falling apart and it would have been wrong to install all of that new stuff without shoring up the walls. At no charge, I replaced the bottom plates and sistered a new stud to 30 studs, lifting the garage back up. The entry door was dented by my siding contractor. He bought the member a new door. It was the right thing to do. You hire me to make something NEW! You don’t want a new thing with a dent. Do you? As far as me priding myself on being slow, I would rather tell someone that it takes me a long time then to make them believe it will be done in a couple of weeks and 4 weeks later I’m still there.

Please see below comment -- would not recommend himI had Johnathan Smith from Insured services come out to give me an estimate on flooring in my bathroom, kitchen, DR, LR and sunroom floors, kitchen ceiling and putting a small sink in my bathroom off my kitchen. When he left he said he would get me the quote in about 3-4 days - that was on the 30th. of January. I finally got an e-mail from Johnathan on the 8th. of February, apologizing for not getting it done and that he would send something over this week (13th. of February) - I told me to foget about it, I would look into getting someone else that is more reliable. Don't get me wrong he was pleasant, but tried to talk me into designs I had no interest in - kitchen flooring I knew exactly what I wanted, but he tried to talk me into getting something completely different. He did say he was a slow worker, which was okay with me. But what turned me off was when he said that his wife might sometimes come to the job site to keep him company, because they get lonely - really?I did get a quote from Hoosier Hardwood floors (Ideal Flooring), and will probably go with them for the hardwood floors. But for Insured Services, Johnathan Smith, I wouldn't bother with him or his lonely wife!!

Well I don't know what to say. My wife and I have worked together for 5 years. We've been married for 10 years. We are somewhat codependent now. She had worked as a contractor (Crawling and installing) by my side until a year ago.She has a computer job now (still self employed an editor and writer) and yes she comes along sometimes. She likes to hang out with me and is still a great help when not doing her own work. I'm glad that the member got someone else.

Thanks, It's a pleasure to serve. The other day I had a customer ask me, "How do you know how to do all of these things?" I answered, "I've been doing this for 22 years."

Pros: Jonathan did an amazing job on the floor. I don't think it would be possible for him to have gotten the tile straighter or more level, which is a feat considering he was installing tile on an uneven basement floor in a 90+ year old house. He took great care with the details, and in figuring out the best configuration for laying the tile. We appreciated his thoroughness and thoughtfulness. Jonathan was very responsive to phone calls and emails, and he was very professional in all communication with me. The final bill was exactly as quoted -- no surprises at all. When he left each day and at the end of the job, he left everything very clean. This was the first time that we didn't have to clean up a mess after a contractor left, or even make arrangements to fix something that a contractor had broken while he was here. He was very respectful of our home. He had a coupon on Angie's List, which saved us $110! Cons: Jonathan works on his own time -- he calls it "contractor time." Some days he worked 2 or 3 hours, others he worked 5 or 6. He told us this up front, so there were no surprises with his work schedule. He originally told us the job would take 5 days, but it ended up taking 8. Some of the delay was inevitable, and we weren't in a hurry, so it didn't matter to us. However, a similar work schedule on what should be a 3 week job could take him over a month. On four different days, he told us that he was going to show up, and then didn't. Each time there was a good reason, so we understood. However, each time he called us at the time that he was supposed to show up. A little bit more notice would have been so helpful to avoid us rearranging our schedules so that we could be there when he got there and moving things around the house to make way for him, just to find out that he wasn't coming. Overall, we're happy that we hired him, very happy with the job he did, and would certainly make the same decision to hire him for this job again.
Description of Work: Jonathan installed tile in a basement hallway (60 square feet).

Those are some very kind words. Thank you! I do clean up after myself. That’s when I find mistakes or flaws. I’d rather find them and fix them before you notice them. This was a very crooked floor that had to be built up to match the height of another ceramic floor. In many places it was 1" out of level. It was a frustrating process that took me twice as long as it should have. That’s contracting for you. I’ve learned to get over it. Every job is done eventually. As to the days I didn’t show up, I had foolishly decided to start the day before Thanksgiving. Oops. That Wednesday I was still a little behind and thought it was wiser to start after the holiday. I’m very sorry for the inconvenience. I did not intend on being rude. I’m 44 years old. I’ve been remodeling homes for 22 years or more. I’m an artist, a craftsman. I’m self motivated; I don’t need managed. If you need me, call me. I almost always answer my phone. You never have to chase me. Each day I set goals for myself and try to work until I achieve them. Some days 3 hours on my knees is all I can take. Some days I have to wait for things to dry (drywall mud, mortar). I watch other contractors wander around wasting time so they can say they were there. That’s just not me. I work almost everyday, even weekends. If I’m there I’m working. I admit I’m slower and take more time. I could have hired a subcontractor of mine that is here Angieslist.com too. I use him on large jobs for demo and drywall. He would have had this job done in a day or two. It would not have been as straight and level. I would have been disappointed in the job and the member would not have given me an A.
