+ -1 moreThey came, I fed them coffee, they started a fire, they left! I was planning on leaving the house but couldn't since there was a fire going... So, we rearranged our morning plans. They were polite and knowledgable. I asked a bizillion questions, all of which were answered to my satisfaction! They even wore the booties to keep my floors clean. I couldn't believe how punctual they were! I think it was 8am on a Saturday morning. I suppose I forgot they were coming so early!

+ 1 moreI had a terrific experience with Ely Stokes. I recently moved to an old house that was built and added to at various stages over time. It has a lot of character, but also has some design issues that make repairs complicated. I was getting some leaks inside around a chimney, and called this company to check out the flashing on the roof. James, the owner, came out and spent quite a bit of his time inspecting the home. The flashing didn't need major repairs, and since the chimney comes out in a complicated section of the roof where several valleys converge, he recommended a roofer to handle the repair. After thoroughly checking my (disgusting) attic, he eventually realized that the leaks were coming from a gas furnace that was improperly vented into the chimney. He took a great deal of time explaining why the vent pipe shouldn't be going to the chimney, and why it was saturating the bricks with water.He recommended a fix - which we can do later in the year when we aren't using the furnace - and quoted me a reasonable price. I plan on having them out to do the repair, as well as any other chimney and fireplace issues we encounter.
Description of Work: The owner, James, came to give me an estimate and wound up spending an hour checking out my home and thoroughly investigating the problem.

+ 1 moreAfter I had problems with another fireplace/chimney company, Ely Stokes offered to send a technician out at no charge to give me an estimate for the work that I needed on my chimney and fireplace. They were able to schedule the inspection within a week, and the technician seemed very knowledgeable and had good recommendations for what needed to be fixed. He gave me a rough estimate and said that I should be able to get the work scheduled/completed by the holidays, but said that I would need to call them back to find out the exact price of the repair work since some items needed to be special ordered. Since the appointment over 2 months ago, I have called back several times (at least every other week) and have been told that they aren't sure how much the repairs will cost, but they would call me back with a quote. I have only received one call back (a voicemail stating that they are still looking into the cost) and have been unable to schedule the work. I'm very disappointed because I was hoping to get this work done before winter started and now it will have to wait until spring when I can find another fireplace company that has time to work with me. Update - Responding to Ely Stokes' Response It appears that this company has me confused with another customer. I left at least 2 voicemails and several other calls that I made were answered before going to voicemail (when the person answering the phone told me that they would call me back). Also, the technician did not tell me (or any other individual, since I do not have a husband and have been the only person speaking to Ely Stokes) that I would need a new fireplace unit. He suggested several repairs that would need to be made to both the fireplace unit and the chimney, and I was happy with the price range of the rough estimate he gave me but just needed a final quote to proceed. Finally, the technician reassured me in early November that it would be no problem to finish my work before the holdiays, even after he was aware of the 'complexity of my issue'. It is unfortunate that a company that seemed to have such a knowledgable technician is too disorganized in their office to get the work done.
Description of Work: I called Ely Stokes to have some repairs made to my fireplace and chimney. They sent a technician out to inspect the fireplace and give me a quote for the cost of the repairs.

+ 3 moreThis was quite a project and this team did a great job! The masonry crew who set up the scaffold, torn down the chimney, and rebuilt the chimney were fantastic! They were incredibly hard working and took great pride in the job they were doing. They didn't even take a lunch break. Food was delivered to them and they ate in shifts-that is dedication!!!! They were respectful of our property and cleaned up each evening. We were having family over to celebrate an early Thanksgiving and the crew worked so hard to get the chimney done before everyone arrived at noon on Saturday and they did! It was a big project and involved a lot of materials and when they left there wasn't a sign that the crew had been at our house for three days tearing down and rebuilding a 30 foot chimney. Great job, guys! The two guys who installed our fireplace and furnace flue worked just as hard as the masonry crew. The flue was going to be a tight fight and Rob got creative and figured out how we could maximize the space we had and get a particular size liner in the fireplace. Thank you! Jimmy & Chris installed our gas starter and were kind enough to patch a few holes we had in the brick work where the furnace vented to the chimney and readjust the size of the duct of our water heater to ensure proper flow to the furnace flue. The entire crew was respectful, hard working, and kind. They always took off their shoes at the door, cleaned up at the end of the day, and put up with all of our questions and concerns. Thank you for an incredible job. We love our wood burning fireplace!
Description of Work: Rebuilt out chimney from the roofline up stepping the chimney out three courses at the top. Reconfigured wash crown to a square mortar crown. Installed a stainless steel top damper. Relined the fireplace flue with a stainless steel flue liner. Relined the furnace flue with an aluminum flue liner. Installed a gas starter in the fireplace.

+ -1 moreThey arrived when promised and quickly cleaned the chimney and fireplace. The tech said that we had some issues with the brick work and chimney crowns. His computer was down, but he said that we would be emailed pictures and explanations of what repairs we needed from the main office. I waited 2 weeks and called the office..the girl that answered said that they were very busy and that the owner would send me the information when he could. It is now a month later and we still have heard and received nothing. If this "report" is part of the cleaning and if it is important, I feel that they should have gotten back to us long before now.

I was very impressed with the gentleman that came out to do the cleaning, because unlike other companies that I contacted, he didn't try to sell me additional services.
Description of Work: We have had them clean the fireplace years before. They were back in July to clean the fireplace again, and then I called them shortly after to replace the chimney liner, topper, and do some repairs to the firebox.

Description of Work: There has been a change of ownership here. Eli died about a year ago. They were courteous, did their work, and presented me with a bill within 15 minutes. Sorry to say I was in another part of the house so did not see what they actually did. I'm so used to Eli people doing such good work, that I really did not pay attention. Should have. They also told me of exterior chimney work that needed to be addressed. Chimney was tuck pointed 6 years ago, so this surprised me. My superficial exam afterwards revealed one small area of mortar missing. They may be OK, but I'm suspicious and will not use them again.

The only exception that I had with this company is that they did a professional write up on things that needed to be addressed, they also advised me not to use the fireplace until fixes were made, they explained the fixes needed to me and said they would get back with me to go over cost and to schedule the repairs. I never heard from them again.
Description of Work: There was two of them. One performed services inside to the fireplace the other put the caps on top and did the overall inspection.

They did not do any work. In fact nobody ever even came out. I never talked to anybody and I never even got a quote. I will not use their services again in the future.

+ 2 moreOverall I was happy with them. The other company that mortared my stone wall along the driveway did an excellant job. So i'm glad I was able to find someone else hungry enough to accept the job, give a good price and do great work.... I would try Ely Stokes again in the future but i would only use them for my chimney.....
Description of Work: I first scheduled with them to have my chimney swept and fully inspected with there $99 special. I told them my fire bricks in my fireplace needed some touch up on the mortar and also told them the fireplace would stink up the great room on hot humid days. They came out and swept the chimney and said my fireplace was in good shape. They took pictures of the fireplace to get me a quote for repair. They also told me that they would get a quote to waterproof the outside of the chimney to help get rid of the smell of the fireplace in the great room. I told them while they were getting quotes that i wanted a quote to mortar a stonewall that runs along side my driveway. So they took pictures and said they would get back to me. I waited over a week and heard nothing. I called and the woman said she would get back to me the next day and never did. I called again and she gave me the quotes for the fireplace repair and waterproofing the outside of the chimney but needed to come back and take more pictures of the stone wall so the owner could give a better quote. I waited another week and heard nothing. I called back and the woman said they would need a couple more days. I said o.k. and again waited and never heard anything. I called back and told the woman to just schedule the waterproofing of the chimney and fireplace motar repair and they came out the following week. The workers were on time and completed both jobs. While they were there they were suppose to take more pictures of our stone wall to get us that quote but I didn't want to wait any longer. I already had another company get me a quote and were halfway done with the stone wall when the Ely Stokes workers were there. I was pleased with there work on our chimney but disappointed with constantly have to call them for updates. I felt like they didn''t want to do the mortar job on the stone wall and the woman answering the phone seemed like she could use more help. In these times I understand running your company lean but it can hurt your business in the long run. Overall I was happy with the work I had done. Just a hint i was frustrated with the the lack of communication and almost went with another company. I really would like to see this company succeed and I'm just offering one suggestion. "COMMUNICATION"..... If your to busy, just tell the customer and they may use you again the next time around.... And get your receptionist some help... She was very nice but I'm guessing she has to many duties and could use another hand.....

They tore our old chimney down to the roofline, hauled away the dirt and debris, found brick to match our house, rebuilt our chimney, repaired the chimney flashing, and cleaned up everything--up all in 2.5 days! The guys wokred hard and were very professional. We are definitely going to contact them again for other work we need done around the house.

+ -1 moreI spent about $1800 for their services. The job turned out fine. It has held up together well and looks good. They seemed to know what they were doing and were professional as well. Their price was competitive. I had one other bid and it was in the same range. I would use them again for certain jobs. They work up in the air on chimneys and things with fewer people. There are more people to do ground level work. It kind of narrows the field the higher they go.
Description of Work: Ely Stokes Inc. did some brick work on our front steps last fall. We had some cracked bricks on our front steps. So, they removed the old bricks and replaced with new bricks.
