I discussed with James that I did not want all wood or concrete. I wanted a wrap around deck boarder really of a concrete patio. Think of a patio that is trimmed with two feet of boards. I wanted the deck smooth and level with the patio. It exceeded my expectation. My wife and I were sometimes frustrated with progress because we wanted it completed already but he kept the faith. And now that it is finished, "WOW." He took the time to fill in the joints with filler, use a floor sander, to level it out, multiple applications of water proofing. It is a masterpiece. I love walking on the wood with bare foot and not feeling the seams. I know that it is outdoors and mother nature will do what she does best but for now, perfection. Steps that I did in preparation: 1. I placed fill dirt in the area to level out the pitch of the ground 2. I had paver base delivered and distributed in the area and tamped it down myself. 3. Ordered the timber and materials that James specified and had it delivered James then: 1. Staked out the area 2. Dug footers 3. Built Frame to a perfect pitch for drainage and distance from the house foundation 4. Put planking on so screws are below surface 5. I rented for him the floor sander for him to use. 6. Applied filler to spaces and screw heads 7. Sanded again. 8. Waited a few days 9. Reapplied filler and sanded 10. Waited for a few days 11. Light sanding 12. Water proofed timber, waited 2 hours and light sanded again before applying another coat 13. Sanded again with finer sand paper and applied another coat. 13b. Added Cladding 14. I rented a concrete mover and ordered the concrete 15. James and crew arrived and applied a cracked smooth slate stencil (imprint) to the concrete. 16. Wait a few days to harden and joy of joys.
Description of Work: An 'L' shaped patio/deck. The majority is behind the house and part around to the side of the house. It has two long runs, a 22' and a 24', width is 12 and 8 feet in areas. There are three areas that are concrete and are joined by two feet of planking. So the concrete sections are framed by the timber. I asked to use cedar toned treated wood. It is great. Camera pooped out otherwise I would submit a finished picture.
