+ -1 moreAndy was a delight to work with. I notified him through e-mail on Sunday and he contacted me promptly and came out for a consultation on Monday. He was punctual, courteous, professional, and well prepared. We discussed my vision, and he offered some advice. He committed to getting the estimate to me by Wednesday and he did. In the course of a week, I made a couple of modifications, and Andy always accommodated them cheerfully. I received 5 bids, and it came down to Deck Works and another provider with both bids being the lowest of the 5. The only reason I went with the other provider was that he could work me in earlier due to a cancellation. I wouldn't hesitate to contact Andy in the future should I have a need for his services.

+ -1 moreI recieved two estimates for this project. Andy provided the lower estimate and based on the great feedback from other members I chose to use Deck Works for the project. He even offered up a few ways I could cut costs since this was not something I wanted to spend a lot of money on. After making the decision the crew was out two days later and competed the project in one day. We were very please with the results and would use them again for any future projects.

I got some bids from other people and they actually were cheaper and could do it right away, unlike the other companies. They had it done within a few days and it turned out to be a very nice job. They were very careful with not doing any damage to my landscaping and I'm very pleased with their work.

The crew building the new deck and working on the porch were very perfessional and knew their business from top to bottom. They were very easy to work with and discuss various aspects of the project as it progressed. They came up with some great ideas to enhance what we originally requested to be done. Their dedication to hard work and perfection was very refreshing to see and somewhat surprising to experience in todays time. I commend the entire crew and the job they did. I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing deck or porch work done.
Description of Work: Expand existing deck by 8 feet. Replace worn and torn screening on porch. Repaint screened porch interior and floor. Replace worn screen door to porch. Install storm door leading onto deck from master bedroom. Powerwash and stain original deck as well as the new deck area.

+ -1 more(05/05/2010) I had to call them twice to get a response. Once I heard from Andy, he referred me to another guy, Brian Maize. That guy was a real jerk! Can't speak for the quality of Deck Works actual work, but didn't appreciate being brushed off. UPDATE (05/10/2010) Owner of Deck Works called after he saw his report from me on Angie's list. Explained that he was called out of town on a family emergency and that's why I didn't receive a call within 24-48 hours. He also apologized for referring me to Mr. Maze. Said he's used him in the past and wasn't sure why he was so rude to me. Owner offered to come out and look at my deck, but I told him I already found someone else.
Description of Work: (05/05/2010) Don't call within 24 hours. If you only need a deck wash/seal and repair, don't call these guys. I guess they only build new decks or do expansions. UPDATE (05/10/2010) No services performed. Only telephone conversations.

Description of Work: Worked with Andy to replace current wood deck with trex decking material. He seemed to be knowledgable at the time. We discussed what colors and patterns we wanted. The work started around July 1. We had a number of issues with the material ordered. Husband and I wanted a two tone deck. Andy told us we could have white ballisters and post covers of a different color. We noticed the materials on our driveway to be installed were not what we wanted. We called Andy and then found out that we couldn't get what we wanted. Because of all the issues, the deck took the whole summer to complete (2+months). Andy tried to work with us to get us what we wanted but much of it was less than ideal because it looked as if we force fitted items together. For example the top of the rails had to be cut in half and screwed together --so there is a seam that we did not expect to have. Not confident that if there is an issue with the materials going forward that he will stand by it. Like I said Andy tried to find us a solution but I did not appreciate the tone at times with me--he treated me like I was the issue. I just wanted what we agreed to in the meeting when I put half the money down.... and we were told we could get. Lastly, on the final bill ...not only did he not give us any kind of discount but he tried to overcharge us by hundreds of dollars. He didn't apply the angies list discount, then he didn't apply to all items, and then he put down a much lower deposit amount than what we paid. Coincidence...I think not!

+ -1 moreOverall, well. The team fought bad weather, mostly rain, as well as waiting for the building inspector to check the footers. Had that worked smoothly, things would have been better. The deck is elevated about 4 feet above grade, so not having that space for 2 weeks or so wasn't the greatest. I selected a new "green" material replacing the previous composite decking. Andy visited the material supplier and discussed installation issues, etc. Since the site was pretty muddy from the weather, a lot of mud tracked around yard and on deck. Crew might have taken a little more time to clean-up site but it's always tough to judge "how clean" as the yard and area will always take some beating with this sort of project. The crew was always responsive to questions and asked for input at critical points ie do these balusters meet your needs, etc. The price was very fair, at or better than the other 3 quotes, and with his experience, Deck Works came out on top.

+ -1 moreI had an existing deck that was stained a very dark brown by the previous owner. Originally we thought about simply taking the existing top boards off and simply replacing them and not staining the deck... Then the deck would just look silly... So we decided on redoing the deck to what we wanted.. We called several companies for bid on the project and Andy was exceptionally professional throughout the entire process... I had Andy come out to the house and he took some sketches of the existing deck and listened to what we wanted out the new deck... Within several days he got back to me with a proposal and a rendering of the deck. Through several iterations, that went by very fast, we came to agreement about what the deck needed to be. Andy is extremely flexible and works well with his schedule. Apparently one of his other customers put their project on hold and immediately called me and said he wanted to get me scheduled and done... Within a week, due to poor weather, our existing deck was no more (WOOHOO) and a fantastic new deck was built. I had my neighbor come over and he was even shocked how nice it came out. My wife and I couldn't ask for a nice deck. We are looking forward to this summer and spending a lot of time outside with our dog.
Description of Work: Needed to have an existing deck demo'd and a new deck built... The existing deck wasn't all that big and the new deck opened up so much more space.

His estimate was submitted in a couple of days, well thought out and clearly presented. Although we ultimately selected another company to complete the project, I would heartily recommend Mr. West for consideration in this type of project or similar endeavors. He is a true professional.

+ -1 moreAndy came out promptly to meet with us and discuss what it was we were looking for in a deck. He explained the options available to us clearly and accurately. He worked quickly to come up with a design we were happy with. He was very easy to approach with problems and questions. He was happy to correct some issues that came up. The only issue we had was some of the work was not what we were expecting, but Andy discussed it with us and corrected the problems to our satisfaction. We also had some communication issues where we were unable to reach Andy for a couple days when they didn't show up to work on the deck as we expected, but this was explained and not a major issue. We are extremely happy with the deck and happy with our decision to hire Deck Works.

I offered to pay them if they could move it when they were finished.? They came right in, moved the washstand, and would not take any money for doing it.
Description of Work: I had anticipated putting in a patio of composite decking material. When Andy West came to give me an estimate he said he thought ceramic tile would work better in my space. He told me where to go look to choose tile, he promptly sent an e-mail estimate, and began the work as soon as the materials arrived. In addition, his crew put outdoor carpet in an adjoining area for me at a very reasonable cost (it was an afterthought on my part and not included in the original estimate). They were very professional and left things very clean when they finished.

There were some boards he put in at the start that we didn't like and he replaced. The only problem was a couple weeks after the deck was finished a couple boards warped. He came right out though and fixed it no charge. They did a good job cleaning up after themselves too.

Upon making the fixes, paver patio was damaged. Company agreed to send someone out to fix the pavers. This took another several weeks to complete.

The owner was very pleasant to work with and gave me some time to address concerns and answer questions.
