About us

Crawlspace Doctor was established in Bloomington, Indiana in 2002. Crawlspace Doctor was one of the first companies in the country to exclusively implement the practice of conditioned/ un-vented crawlspaces. We were perfecting our methods when almost everyone else still believed in vented crawlspaces. Over time conditioned crawlspaces became the preferred method for constructing crawlspaces under homes. The process of conditioning a crawlspace is so successful it created an entire new industry. As a leader in the industry we pride ourselves in providing a large variety of products to fit our clients individual needs. We will NEVER be a company that supplies only one solution with one product for every need. We constantly work with manufactures and suppliers to provide the best and most cost effective products available.

A great experience once again with Matt Dieters and his crew from Crawlspace Doctor! We have used this company in the past for work at our residence, and we decided to use them again for an investment property that needed quite a bit of work in the crawlspace. The crawlspace had massive amounts of debris, old HVAC duct work had fallen all throughout, and it had been home to neighborhood animals - this was NOT an easy clean out! Matt, Kevin, and the rest of the crew cleared every bit of debris out and hauled it away. They then supplied and installed new duct work under the house (saving us a call to an HVAC contractor and another service fee). Many floor joists (17 I believe) needed to be repaired and/or replaced. Finally, a new vapor barrier was installed to help keep the crawlspace dry. After having had a vapor barrier installed in our own home, we have come to believe these are an essential part of an efficient crawlspace. We will use Matt Dieters and Crawlspace Doctor for our future projects - thanks again and great job!
Description of Work: Crawlspace was cleared of debris and old material, new HVAC duct work supplied and installed, new vapor barrier put in place, and several floor joists repaired/replaced.

Matt and a helper called, apologized for the delay and stated that they wanted to make good on their promise and get the entrance fixed. They worked all day and the entrance to the crawlspace is now perfect. Even a heavy person could get into it. They also put in a ramp so that you can't get caught on any of the pipes, etc. All of this work was FREE/
Description of Work: Matt came in about a year ago to completely redo our crawlspace. He did an excellent job and I gave him an :A: report. During the initial work, I paid Matt to put in an exterior crawl space access door. It ended up being a tad small. It was my fault for looking at picures only (of the work) and not the access. The cover to the access is great, the inner door is wonderful but you would have to be a drawf to get into the crawlspace. Matt said that he would be out in a few months to fix the size of the opening.

This is truly the best service company I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with! They went above and beyond to make us happy. It was an added bonus to get our sewer line fixed which, I'm sure, is not something that is within their normal scope of work. Their pricing was much less than a competitor's who did not do any type of insulation. The workers were very kind and thorough and were never bothered by the many questions that I had. Matt Dieters is professional and expects nothing but the best from his workers and it shows! They kept us updated at all times, worked in pouring rain and mud, and came back as many times as was necessary to make sure everything was as perfect as possible. We got more than our money's worth.
Description of Work: They removed debris, put in a new sump pit and pump along with the associated drain pipe, installed insulation on the walls and in the box headers, put down a vapor barrier, extended a window well, and corrected a sewer pipe line that was not at the correct angle and would not flow correctly.

I requested estimates from three contractors, and Crawlspace Doctor's was competitive. Jay is very knowledgeable of home construction in general, and crawlspaces in particular. He was willing to work with me to add some features that most crawlspaces don't offer. His crews were generally on-time, although they did have to fit some other jobs into the schedule while working on ours.

Excellent work. The work was done in my parents home. Jay was friendly, courteous, and very in tune to my parents needs. Kept in touch with me by phone throughout the job. Always on time. Completed the job on schedule. Jay noticed a pesky leak (that turned out to be from the line to the refrigerator ice maker) and had to call in a plumber who found the leak right away. Jay would not complete the moisture barrier until he was satisfied that everything was dry.

We started with a smell and excessive water in the crawl space. Since his company does not go into the crawl space if there is standing water, Jay recommended that we hire a company that specializes in water extraction. Once this was done Jay and his workers returned to do the job described above. They were timely and professional. He answered all of our questions and promptly responded to our calls and concerns. In addition, My husband went into the crawl space; but I declined the offer. My husband felt that the work was excellent based on his first hand view. Jay prepared a CD of the work performed so that I could see what he and the team had done. I, too, felt that excellent work had been done. Finally. they saw pipes that needed to be repaired and took care of it without additional cost.
Description of Work: Installed new crawlspace entrance with well and new door at rear of our home, removed/hauled away all debris, attached loose wires and cables, installed new sump pump, treated structure lumber in crawl space with Sporicidin. Insulated crawl space and added new vapor barriers for sides and floor of crawl space. Installed new register vent.

We had experienced moisture problems from day one after building a new home. After a year, we contacted a home inspection service who found our mold problem which was caused by an improper drainage system and gave us Matt's name and number. Matt responded to my call immediately, came out, got under the house and took pictures. He then presented us with the pictures and an estimate for the job. He explained in detail what needed to be done and answered all our questions. He also recommended several mold removal companies for us to contact. Matt was extremely patient with us while we tried to talk with our builder concerning this problem. After no response from our builder, we decided to go ahead and have the work done before the damage worsened. Matt again responded immediately, set a time to begin the work and showed up promptly. The work was completed in 6 days with minimal mess. He explained as each step of the procedure was completed so we knew day by day what was being accomplished. Matt himself is a pleasure to work with as are his employees. After the work was completed, Matt took pictures of the finished job for comparison to the pictures he had taken when giving the estimate. We feel extremely comfortable with our decision to go with Crawlspace Doctor and Matt.
Description of Work: Removed all debris, existing vapor barrier and insulation. Dug up existing drain pipe. Installed new drain system to bring water to sump pit. Installed proper vapor barrier that covers not only the floor but the exterior walls. Installed sump pump with alarm and installed drain for it outside. Re-insulated walls and box headers. Closed off foundation vents and put in a vent for heating and cooling in crawlspace.

Matt was wonderful to work with because he was extremely responsive. In addition, the crew that worked with him (from the kids that cleaned out the drain to Kevin and Jeff, the main workers) were excellent. Throughout the process, they explained everything in great detail and did a great job. The crew even built a new crawlspace door to fit our oddly-shaped opening. They came back after the work was done to do this to make sure we had a tighter seal on our crawlspace.
Description of Work: The Crawlspace Doctors did an entire drainage system under the house and also installed a vapor barrier. They cleaned up extensively.

We were in the process of selling the house, and had to eliminate standing water in the crawlspace. The house is located in Greenwood, and after the record rainfall in June, there was water in the crawlspace in places that had never been wet. Due to poor design, the water had no way to drain toward the sump pit. Matt was able to inspect the crawlspace the same day I called him. Knowing that the issue had to be resolved prior to closing on the house sale, Matt rearranged his schedule and was able to get a crew to the house within 2 weeks of my initial call-no small feat considering that all the companies I talked to for this project were taking 2 weeks just to come and provide an estimate, with another 4 week wait to start work (due to the backlog from the June flooding). Matt and his crew completed this project in about 2 1/2 days and did a great job not only in the crawlspace, but in cleaning up around the outside of the house-hosing off the patio to remove all the mud from going in & out of the crawl as well as removing any signs of trash from the project. Having the pictures of the results is a plus as it shows the buyers exactly the work that was performed.
Description of Work: Matt and his crew installed a French drain around the inside perimeter of the crawlspace, lowered the existing sump pit, and installed new Mylar throughout.

Due to this past flood and a crawl space with no drain system it was necessary to have a drain system installed. Through a neighbor we were introduced to Matt Deilters from the Crawl Space Doctor. I than checked him out on Angel's list and found a very good report. From the very beginning Matt was very open with us in what we needed. Due to our crawl space not being one big open space as most are made it harder to work in. It is divided into rooms with the walls out of cement block. The drain had to be dug out by hand and they also had to go through the cement block walls to run the drains through. With the extra walls in our crawl space it made it much more difficult to install the sump pits in the right places. They also had to work around a radon system which is not easy. We were very impressed with Matt's detailed estimate and the pictures of the crawl space before and after the job was finish. Matt also us kept informed as the work was being done answering any questions and concerns. Matt and his crew went out of their way to do a good job and to please us.
Description of Work: The crawl space work included a French drain system, 2 sump pits and sump pumps installed. He also installed 2 dehumidifiers. Took out old plastic and installed a new vapor barrier system. Insulated the side walls and closed off the outside vents. He also finished a radon system that was left uncompleted by another company. Matt Deiters was one of 3 estimates. He, by far, was most responsive and helpful. He spent a lot of time going over our needs. His price was less as well as better service! We now have a crawl space that is also better energy efficiency.

Overall, the work on our crawl space went very much according to plan. The Crawlspace Doctor was one of three firms providing us with proposals. The Crawlspace Doctor's proposal was selected on a valuation basis as well as the sincerity and appeal of the owner, Mr. McKinney. Mr. McKinney understands he is in a service business and clearly demonstrated this understanding over the course of the work at our home. During the initial visit Mr. McKinney inspected our crawl space and then explained his firm's technology and services with the aid of a computer-based presentation. He then provided us with a quote (which was strictly adhered to). After considering all the proposals, we informed Mr. McKinney that we would like Crawlspace Doctor to fix our crawl space problems. He indicated that he would schedule the work on our home a few weeks out. (One of the other vendors also gave us a leadtime of several weeks.) When started, the work took the anticipated four days. As explained to us, an electrician was required to run power to the two newly installed sump pumps in the crawl space. The individuals doing the work were very careful to lay down tarps to protect floors and tidied up as much as possible at the end of the work day. The workers were very happy to answer questions and explain what they were doing. Mr. McKinney topped off this very favorable service experience by spending the better part of an hour during his final visit resizing some shelving to allow better access to the crawl space.
Description of Work: The services performed addressed our issue: rainwater entering our crawl space after several of the recent heavy rains. In one instance, so much water entered the crawl space that it began running into the finished portion of the basement. Crawspace Doctor addressed this situation by: 1) Repairing a lintel, 2) Installing a water collection and removal system consisting of drains around the perimeter (inside, of course) of the crawl space and two strategically located sump pumps, and, 3) Enclosing and sealing the entire crawl space in very heavy plastic such that no moisture from either water seepage or humidity can enter the crawl space. Additionally, before installation of the heavy plastic sheath, all of the original insulation which had come loose was reattached and the entire surface of the crawl space was cleaned up and graded to be much more level and accessible. A complete description of the services performed is best described and understood via the computer-based presentation which is an integral part of the Crawlspace Doctor's proposal process.

Jay, the owner, took pictures of the crawlspace which he used to discuss the estimate and recommended work. I had plenty of opportunity to ask questions. The work was started on time and Jay's foreman, Shannon, was one of the hardest working young men I've ever seen. He was polite, and cleaned up as much as possible at the end of each day and when the project ended. The entire job took 2 1/2 days, and there was little to no disruption to me or my schedule. Afterwards, Jay returned and took additional crawlspace pictures which he showed me so I could see the improvements made, and he has remained available if I think of any additional questions. I feel comfortable he will back his work if I should ever develop a new issue with the crawlspace.
Description of Work: The company totally rehabilitated my crawlspace, adding a drain around the inside perimeter, a new sump pump, new insulation board on the walls and new moisture barrier throughout (the plastic). They also sealed the space and added a vent duct.

He was helpful with fixing all of the issues. They did a very good job. They had to dig ground that was hard as a rock. He did really good quality work. He matched a bid that I got from another company. He personally looked over all the work that was done. I thought he did a great job of explaining the work he would do.
Description of Work: They conditioned two separate crawlspaces. He resupported the cement foundation under the deck. He also fixed a pipe that was attached to the downspout that had been crushed over time from rain.

It went very well. Matt provided a lot of information about the way that his work was designed to perform. The vents are sealed, and the space then becomes heated (to a small extent). We had closed the vents earlier and had had no issues with them being closed and crawl space has functioned well since the work was completed. Matt was timely, and shared his schedule with me. He was on site himself and did much of the work.
Description of Work: The insulation in the crawl space of our home had come down and then was water soaked when the sump pump became clogged with insulation and couldn't empty the water in a timely fashion. Matt and his crew installed perimeter drainage pipe inside the crawl (after digging to create a space for it), improved the sump pit, insulated the foundation side walls, took out all of the old insulation and some "stuff" left by a previous owner, and lined the entire area with plastic. He also made sure that furnace ducting was well fastened before he exited the space; they also made improvements in the crawl space door so that it fit the area well and installed an actual handle. Matt returned to check on the space during the fall rainy period that we experienced after the work was completed.

House is 20 years old. Sump pump couldn't keep up with rain causing standing water, minor mold, and minor wood rot in crawl and musty smell in house. The floors squeaked, too. Matt arrived on-time, investigated the crawl and presented us with pictures and options. (Pictures prevent the homeowner from having to enter the creepy crawl if they don't want to.) It took a little over a week to complete the job and there were a few days they couldn't work on our job because they had to work on another site. However, Matt was very good about giving us a heads-up. We felt comfortable allowing them to work at the house while we were not at home. There was a bit of equipment and supplies, but they kept it tidy in one place. After completion of the job, Matt took pictures and put the before-and-afters on a CD. It's been several weeks since completion and the musty smell is gone and the crawl is definitely drier and less humid.********ADDENDUM (10/12/09): We had some other contractors come out who had to work in the crawl space. They basically disconnected and tore apart everything that had been done. Matt came back out and got us set back up and charged us nothing.
Description of Work: Crawlspace repair (removed debris, removed old vapor barrier and replaced with new, removed damaged insulation and replaced w/new, hung the wires & cables, removed old sump pump and dug pit deeper to install a new sump pump w/an alarm, installed a French drain, removed old and installed new crawl space door, installed register vent, blocked off foundation vents, tweaked sump discharge pipe to stop soil erosion in yard.

Our sump pump failed and we got about 8 inches of water into our crawl space. After pumping out the water, I called Matt to hire him to come back and look over the work he had done last year to see if it needed to be repaired. This was a Friday afternoon at 4:30pm. Matt dropped his family plans for the evening and drove all the way to Indy from Bloomington and arrived shorted after 6pm. He got into the crawlspace, fixed some minor things with the work he had done last year *AND* fixed the problem with my sump pump ALL FOR FREE just because I was one of his customers. All he would accept was $50 for his gas. This was service and dedication above and beyond to be sure.

Matt was wonderful to work with. I had received an estimate from him last fall. He kept in contact with me until I was ready for him to start. Quite a change from my experiences in the past with begging a contractor to get back with me to give him work. They finished the job in 2 days, less than anticipated. Matt came back a third day to make sure that the individual spraying the foam insulation was complete and that everything looked good. Matt came back a forth day after electrician visited to install electrical outlet so that the dehumidifier could be hooked up. He showed my husband before and after pictures and he was informative and very personable. We could not have asked for more.
Description of Work: They installed a vapor barrier to crawl space of home. They took out old insulation, inspected the underside of house, put in 3 jacks, repaired some wood damage, put in a dehumidifier and sprayed foam insulation to the perimeter of home.

Matt was great to work with, gave a clear estimate, and performed the work quickly. He removed old insulation in our crawlspace, cleaned the (scary) crawlspace, and installed a vapor barrier for us in preparation for new insulation work. He also made sure I was happy before he left the job as completed. I fully appreciated the fact that he did not try to talk us into anything we didn't want (he was careful to let us know he could perform other work we expressed interest in, but was very tactful about his opinions on whether or not we truly needed the work done or that maybe we should wait until we take on some of our other projects to tackle them.) While I feel Matt was selling the job, I came away feeling he only wanted to sell me what right for my house (after all, 110 year old homes have peculiarities!) Matt came back (as he said he would) and took pictures of the work he did and gave us a copy on a disk. Very satisfied.

I found this company on Angie's list and I contacted them via email along with 2 other companies. One company never returned my email and the other company gave me an estimate that was about $2500 lower but after examining it, I could tell that they had not addressed all of the issues. Matt responded to my email the next day and scheduled an appt a couple days later. I was very impressed with his detailed estimate. He actually takes a camera under the house and then shows you exactly what is wrong via his laptop. The other company was only planning to do about half of the work. This was a very big job. Matt kept me informed every step of the way, answering any questions and immediately addressing any concerns. My husband is a contractor and I can tell you that there are very few guys that will go above and beyond the way Matt and his guys did. He even left some of my ductwork off, so that my plumbers could do their work and then came back and installed it and cleaned up their mess.
Description of Work: Matt and his guys replaced the majority of the floor joists in my home. They also replaced the main support beam and most of the sub-floor. They put in a perimeter drain and installed a new sump pump. They also insulated the outside foundation walls, and put a vapor barrier down in the crawlspace. They replaced most of the ductwork under the house as it had rusted due to the water and installed a register under the house to keep the moisture under control. They put in a new crawlspace door and closed off the old unneeded vents.
