Description of Work: We bought a new Lenovo desktop computer and contacted Bruce to transfer our old computer's files to the new PC. A conversation with Bruce prior to purchasing the computer established some guidelines for what the new computer should have: at least 4 GB of RAM, 400 GB of hard drive and some additional iterms. His most important advice was: buy nothing additional in the way of programs; I can install whatever you need for less than you'd pay retail. When he came out, he transferred the files and re-installed my Quicken 2004, my 2003 Excel and 2003 Word programs. In addition, he installed the limited versions of 2010 Word and Excel. Finally, he looked at our aging laptop to determine what could be done to speed it up (not too much, but a little help). On 4/21 (Saturday) afternoon, I tried to scan some documents and discovered repeated error messages. I emailed him and he responded with remedial suggestions quickly. That didn't work, so I emailed him with more details of what was going wrong. He called and over the next three or four hours, he logged into my PC remotely and uninstalled and reinstalled the printers (scanner) full featured drivers from the HP website. At about 8:30 on Saturday evening he concluded that the scanner itself might be "broken" and that I should call HP to see if they could make it work . I called HP and even though the printer was out of warranty, the lady at HP spent the next 3 hours without charge replicating what Bruce had already done--with the same results: the scanner wouldn't work. HP offered me a discount on a new printer/scanner/fax machine which I accepted. Unfortunately, all of the HP effort essentially duplicated and confirmed Bruce's initial conclusion. Bruce was outstanding throughout, spending several hours on a Saturday afternoon and evening without charge. I'm keeping him on our "first call" list--and recommending him to all who have computer problems.

Description of Work: He arrived promptly and varified our list of problems with our computers; a desk top and laptop. He immediately did a clean sweep of both computers, checking for any virus or other problems. With our permission, he added another virus program to our computers at no charge. He set automatic defrag and disk cleaning and showed us how the programs work. He fixed the printing problem with the desktop and disabled several nuisance programs our grandchildren had installed. He also fixed the mouse on the laptop and explained/fixed the signal problem we were having with the laptop. He answered all questions that we had and went through our problem list with us to ascertain that everything was fixed before he left. The $105. was well worth the service provided. We would recommend him without hestitation and will hire him again for an annual clean-up.

DEALING WITH A CLIENT WHO SUSPECTS NOT ONLY THAT COUNTLESS FILES ARE LOST (MY FAULT), BUT ALSO THE POSSIBILITY THAT GRAVE THINGS HAVE HAPPENED TO HER COMPUTER IS A DIFFICULT SITUATION AT BEST. BRUCE RETURNED MY INITIAL CALL WITHIN AN HOUR. IN ADDITION TO ASKING ME TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM ITSELF, HE ASKED ABOUT MY SENSE OF URGENCY RELATIVE TO THE SITUATION. I THOUGHT THIS QUESTION WAS EXCEPTIONALLY SENSITIVE AND ALSO A VERY GOOD WAY OF DOING BUSINESS OVERALL. FROM MY OVER-THE PHONE-DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM, HE SAID HE SUSPECTED THAT THE HARD DRIVE HAD CRASHED AND THAT HE WOULD COME PREPARED TO INSTALL A NEW ONE, IF THAT WAS WHAT I WANTED. WE AGREED THAT HE WOULD COME THE FOLLOWING MORNING. HE ARRIVED ON THE DOT, AND SET TO WORK EFFICIENTLY. BRUCE IS KNOWLEDGEABLE, PERSONABLE, FRANK, AND WILLING TO FIELD THE QUERIES OF A STRESSED CLIENT WITH MUCH LESS UNDERSTANDING OF COMPUTERS THAN HE HAS. THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT SERVICE EXPERIENCE.

HE RESPONDED TO MY CALL WITHIN TWO HOURS AND HAD MY NETWORK UP AND RUNNING WITHIN 15 MINUTES AFTER ARRIVAL. HE THEN SPENT 30-45 MINUTES CLEANING UP MY COMPUTER TO INCREASE PROCESSING SPEED AND SHOWED ME HOW TO MAINTAIN IT IN THE FUTURE. A SIMILAR SERVICE CALL IN EVANSVILLE COST $75. THIS IS MY GO-TO GUY FOR ALL FUTURE COMPUTER ISSUES.

+ -1 moreI LOST ALL OF MY EMAIL AND ADDRESSES AFTER RELOADING SOME SOFTWARE. I FOUND THE NAME IN ANGIE'S LIST AND DATA RECOVERY WAS LISTED. I CALLED AND HE SAID IT PROBABLY WAS NOT RECOVERABLE, BUT THERE WAS A CHANCE THAT THERE WAS STILL A FILE ON THE COMPUTER WITH THE DATA. HE TOLD ME WHAT KIND OF FILE TO LOOK FOR USING A WILDCARD SEARCH. RESULT IS THAT I DID FIND THE FILE AND RECOVER ALL OF MY MAIL AND ADDRESS LIST. THERE WAS NO CHARGE ALTHOUGH I GLADLY WOULD HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE INFORMATION RECOVERED.

HE ALSO INSTALLED QUICKBOOKS AND A NEW PHOTO PROGRAM FOR ME. WHEN HE LEFT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THE NEXT MORNING WHILE WORKING ON THE COMPUTER, I HIT THE WRONG KEY AND EVERYTHING CHANGED? HE CALLED TO LET ME KNOW HE WAS ON HIS WAY. HE CAME AND STARTED LOOKING AT MY COMPUTER. I SAID, "THIS IS A FREE ESTIMATE, RIGHT?" HE SAID, "NO, I CHARGE BY THE HOUR." AFTER HE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM, HE LET US KNOW HOW TO FIX IT OURSELVES. I DID APPRECIATE THIS BECAUSE HE DOES CHARGE BY THE HOUR AND EVERYTHING NEEDED TO BE DELETED AND RELOADED INTO THE COMPUTER WHICH WOULD HAVE TOOK HIM ABOUT 2 HOURS. HIS ATTITUDE BOTHERED ME BECAUSE I FELT HE WAS PATRONIZING ME BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW SOME COMPUTER TERMS AND HE WAS VERY CONDESCENDING TO ME. THE PRICE GIVEN IS PER HOUR.
