not good....there was a guy next to the service desk in the repair shop eating a sandwich. I walked in and waited for about 5 minutes waiting for an employee to show up........after he was done eating the guy eating the sandwich looked at me and said "what do you need?" I thought it was another customer but it was an employee who didn't greet me when I walked in and watched me stand there for 5 minutes while he ate......unorganized, didn't know what was wrong with the mower just said it was fixed, terrible communications....got the mower home and it still ran rough

I've been using this company for 20 + years. They've never been great at customer service but the quality of their work was always good and their location convenient so I kept using them for my repair needs. This last visit ruined for me. I came in to drop off my edger for service. There was one person in line in front of me that had obviously been there for some time. There was a man you could see behind a window in front of the counter that could clearly see us but did not budge an inch to either help us or find someone that could. After standing there for 5 minutes he finally got up and I thought he'd help us. Not so fast. He was carrying a bowl of something he was having for lunch. He walked right by the other customer and me, while shoveling food into his mouth without even acknowledging our presence. Eventually one of the technicians noticed us and started to help us when the counter person finally showed up and helped us. A few days later after receiving a call letting me know that my edger was ready to be picked up. I arrived to virtually the same situation. Same guy behind the window, looked up, saw me and turned back to his work. A few minutes later another customer came up and we waited together. Five minutes later a technician noticed us and asked if we were being helped. We told him no and he went back to the guy behind the window to let him know there were customers sitting 6 feet from him waiting to be helped. As he continued to ignore us we waited a few more minutes and finally got up to help us just as the counter worker arrived. I loaded up my edger and went back in to express my satisfaction to the owner. You'd think I'd at least receive an apology, but all I got was "o-ke-dok". I am done with this company.

I didn't call. I had asked it they could get it by noon and they said they didn't see why not. I went by after work and it was ready and the service manager was rude again.
Description of Work: I just needed a tire repaired and they did it but the service manager was extremely rude and unresponsive. I asked him to call me when it was done and he didn't. On their website they have a picture that says "Every time you call to ask about your service $5.00 will be added to your bill."

Took lawn mower in for seasonal tune up. Got the lawn mower back and all of the oil leaked out because they did not replace the seal. Also, when the lawn mower was delivered it had a Toro cover on it even though it was a Craftsman mower. They picked the mower up a second time and replaced the seal and oil and brought it back. Got 2 cuttings out of the mower and it quit running. Castleton Outdoor Solutions refused to fix it and refused to refund the money for the tune up. Took it to another lawn mower shop and they said their was no oil in the lawn mower and it was not repairable. Stay away from this place they have bad service all around and will rip you off!

For brevity, I'll denote the company as "COS". The short story: I took too long to make a decision about whether to repair or replace my MTD Yard Machine, and COS scrapped the machine for parts, WITHOUT warning me, checking with me, or notifying me. Not even a quick phone call or voicemail saying, "hey, call us soon or we are going to scrap your machine." All I owed them was $80, and the value of that machine was well over $200 if not more. The long story: COS picked up my lawn tractor (MTD Yard Machine) for repair ($20 charge). As it turned out, the engine needed a new short block. The charge for discovering this was $60. I researched prices for a short block, and considered my options. I came into their store and looked at new units. I also shopped around elsewhere. I found the replacement short block with MTD and considered repairing the existing unit. In the end, I decided to buy a new tractor and sell the MTD. I placed an ad to sell the MTD ($200 asking price) and I bought a new tractor. A buyer contacted me who was willing to buy the MTD and take on the repairs himself. I called COS to settle up the charges ($80) and arrange for my buyer to pick up the MTD at their location. COS (service dept.) told me that they had scrapped my MTD! I was stunned. I couldn't even talk for half a minute. Steve was rude in his tone, told me this was my fault, and that COS were within their rights. I asked why COS didn't just call me and tell me they were getting ready to scrap my unit. I got no answer to that, just a repeat of their policy and that this was within their rights. I took over a month to make my decision, and I realize that was a long time. I was unaware of their policy, and it was not stated to me verbally. AT THE VERY LEAST, a phone call or voice message giving me a chance to respond would have been decent. I feared they might charge me for storage, but I didn't imagine they would SCRAP MY TRACTOR without even communicating with me! This is not professional or even decent behavior. I called the BBB and they can do nothing about it. Apparently, Indiana is a "buyer beware" state. A company can have a policy and not tell the consumer about it, and enforce that (hidden) policy. I still can't believe they scrapped MY TRACTOR. It was my property!!!

They repaired my mower. When I got it back, the battery was drained and I had to recharge the battery. I'm not too happy with them. I'd give them an F. The mower works. I called them and they said they would call me with an update but they never did. The actual mechanical fix was fine. I'd give an A on that but as far as the electrical part of it, I'd give them a D. The price was good. The mower worked out good.

Snowblower wouldn't start using the electronic ignition although this was noted on the invoice as being checked. I returned the snowblower, but was told this service wasn't covered and they probably didn't tell me about it because the expense of fixing it out-weighed the cost of a new one. This information could have been told to me prior to picking the snowblower up.

The truck and tow dolly online reservation through AAA had been confirmed, but an hour before we were to pick it up, we received a call from Castleton Outdoor Solutions. After looking at our reservation and the truck they had for us, they realized the truck wouldn't pull the tow dolly because it had a lift on the back. We are not sure who made the mistake because we were panicking at this point! We had movers who were going to show up at our condo in an hour to load a truck for our cross country move, but we didn't have a truck. Castleton Outdoor Solutions worked with us to locate another truck that would pull our tow dolly. The only available truck was out of town, and it would take an hour to get there. After asking the movers to come an hour later, we were relieved and a little frustrated. We were so grateful that Castleton Outdoor Solutions caught the mistake when they did. Then they gave us a car carrier instead of the tow dolly at no extra charge for all of the trouble that we had. Wow, that was really nice!!! They were super nice in explaining details in getting and securing the car on the carrier too.
Description of Work: We rented a 26 foot Penske Truck and a tow dolly for our car online and picked it up at Castleton Outdoor Solutions. This was a one way rental.

When we took the mower in for a spring tune-up, we were told it would be ready in two weeks. After two weeks, we were told it would be another week and that they hadn't even looked at it yet, but they would would call us. After five weeks and no call, the unconcerned manager told us that they always told everybody two weeks, and an employee said he guessed he'd have to work on it that night, and it would be ready the next day. The next day we went to pick it up and were told it needed a new carburetor and that it wouldn't be ready for another week. When we said we wanted to take it elsewhere, the employee used profanity and went to find it. We took it to Johnson's Lawnmower Repair in Noblesville where it was tuned up in less than a week and it did NOT need a new carburetor.

After I received a voice mail from a service technician on June 19, I returned the call and spoke with the service department manager (I believe). It took him a minute to locate my mower's service tag but was able to report that the mower can been looked at. This technician stated that the mower's transmission was not working but do not know about the condition of its engine. He thought the mower might be beyond repair and I might need to purchase a new mower. He stated he would have second technician check out the mower. I told the manager that I would like to engine checked out also because there is no need to fix the transmission if the mower's engine is beyond repair. He said he would check with his technician and call me back later that day. I did not receive a call that day so I contacted him the following day. He reported that this technician had not checked the engine and again said he would call me back later that day. I waited until Monday, June 23 and called him again and got the same response from the manager, no updates on the mower and he would call me back. On Tuesday, June 24 I visited the shop in person for an update and the manager was not able to provide an update on the mower's status. He said they were busy and he would give me a call later with an update. On Wednesday, June 25, I called the shop and was not able to contact the manager or leave a voice mail message, so I dropped by again. I asked the manager again for an update on the mower. He searched for the mower's service record on the mower but could not fine it. He also stated that the mower had only been at their shop for 9 days and not the actually 13 days and they had put me in the front of the line for its repairs. I told him I was done doing business with his shop and I wanted to take my mower home with me. He was fine with my decision and then commenced searching for my mower. He searched for ten minutes and was not able to locate the mower until a technician assisted him and the mower was located. The mower's transmission was disassembled but the technician (a nice young man) had to re-assemble the mower before I loaded it . The nice young technician asked me very professionally if I wanted to purchase a mower from Castleton Outdoor Solutions. I responded not today but thank you for asking. I loaded the mower and headed home.
Description of Work: I dropped by Toro 22" Mower off at Castleton Outdoor Solutions for service. The engine was not running and the self propel unit was not working. Their service department technician documented the needed repairs and told me it would take one week to determine the mower problems and another week to make the repairs.

After having my garden tiller for seven weeks, I finally decided they weren't going to work on it. I left it there in March for what was supposed to be a 2 week turn around only to have them never work on it. When I called after 5 weeks the guy told me he would have to work overtime to get to my tiller. that's not my problem. Then, when I gave up and went to pick it up, the service guy was beyond rude, left me standing for 20 minutes while he looked for my paperwork, talked on his phone. etc. I WILL NEVER TAKE A SINGLE MOWER, TILLER, SNOW BLOWER, GRILL OR ANY OTHER ITEM TO THEM EVER AGAIN. THEY ARE RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL, INCOMPETENT, OVERPRICED AND DISORGANIZED. There isn't one redeeming quality I can give this place. Complete disappointed. I'm heading to Fishers Lawn Mower care. At least they don't have a bad reputation.

First told me 2-3 weeks until it would be done, but took almost 5 weeks and daily calls to check status. I was lectured about how busy they were and I just had to wait my turn however long that would take. I finally picked it up and took it home and it ran 15 minutes and died and now won't start. I take off air cleaner housing and it's clogged with dirt and grass. Apparently did not do anything except spray off external dirt and change the pull rope. That's completely unacceptable for the money I was charged and the waiting.

Received a card in the mail to schedule winter service for our lawn mower. This was a company we used last year and although the mower had some cable problems, I decided to give them another try. Sent 2 emails to address on card with no response. Called and made an appt. for pick up. Day before pick up I called to find out time of day they would be at my home for pick up. Unenthusiastic man answered the phone and said he couldn't tell me the time of day because his truck was broken and he would probably be calling me tomorrow to reschedule. After thinking about lack of email response and their indifference to having my business I called back and cancelled the pick up. Should have checked Angie's list last year to find a better service provider. Would not recommend this company to anyone.

We had used Castleton Outdoor Solutions for years to tune up our snow blower and lawn mower. Their pick up and drop off service was a must for us. I called in September to have both completed for the winter. I was trying to correspond pick up and drop off with fall break from school. The man on the phone told me that they would not start until October. I called back in October during fall break. The same person on the phone said that they would not be starting until November. I asked if I could set up an appointment. The man was not interested in setting one up regardless of numerous attempts to try. I I finally asked if I should find someone else to complete the service. I reminded the man that I had been told earlier to call in October. The man seemed unscathed by my question or comment. For me, I took my own advise and called someone else. After reviewing similar service providers on Angie's List, I called Mow Better.

They performed some kind of work on my lawnboy mower. But when I got it home it still wouldn't start. They took it back and said it worked after having it the second time. but again, they were wrong. I told them that the mower was the biggest piece of junk I had ever owned and apparently that offended the guy. He told me not to come back to his shop. No worries. I won't. . I hope no one ever wastes their time and money at this place. They are rude and not good at fixing anything correctly the first or second time.

On November 26, 2012 Castleton Power Solutions picked up our snow blower for service. Their winter special included free pick-up and delivery. We were told that it would be returned by December 10th. We waited several days past December 10th to call about when we could expect delivery. We were told at that time the part to fix the directional shute had just come in, and they would install it and should be able to deliver it that day or the following Monday. When we didn't get it that Monday and the forecast was calling for snow, we called them again and was told they would deliver it the next day for sure, which they did (on December 20th). However, the directional shute would not turn fully. We called them back, and the person who picked it up said the shute should have been checked by the technician at time of repair. They took the snow blower back to the shop and returned it a few days later, and this time the directional shute worked correctly. A few days after the snow blower was returned we got several inches of snow. When we tried to use the snow blower, it would stall out almost immediately. We thought maybe there was too mcuh snow or it was too heavy for the snow blower to handle, so we shoveled by hand. A few days later we got about 3 more inches of snow. This time the snow blower would go down the drive and back once, then stall out when we tried to go down again. This happened several times. We asked a neighbor if he had any idea what was going on, and he couldn't figure it out either. We called Castleton Power Solutions and told them what was happening and were told by the service department that maybe the carburetor needed to be adjusted to the cold setting. We asked them to pick it up again because we had no way of transporting it. Three or four days later we called to check and were told that when they started it up, it was working just fine. It was returned on January 3rd, and the invoice total had been increased by $43 from the orignal total of $125. We hadn't paid for any of the service yet because it wasn't fixed properly. The additonal charge was for pick up and delivery, which was initially free with the winter service special. When we called about the additoinal charge, we were transferred to Steve, who presented with a beligerent attitude and acted like we had returned the snow blower just to jerk his chain. He didn't care that a neighbor had also witnessed the snow blower's stalling out. A normal pick up and delivery charge is $19.95, so he was charging us for 2 of those, because we hadn't paid the bill from the previous time they returned the snow blower. That would have been after they finally fixed the directional shute. We had previously called to pay the bill during normal business hours, but there was no answer even though we tried all departments. Before we could try to pay the bill again, we found out that it still wasn't working properly. Steve was very hostile and would not remove the delivery charges or accept a compromise of us only paying for one. We decided to just pay the total bill but vowed to never use them again.

The chainsaw ran well after all the efforts, but the service and attitudes were anything but professional or customer oriented.
Description of Work: I took my chainsaw in for tune up and seasonal repairs. when I got it back, the invoice indicated that spark plug had been changed, chain sharpened, and that it had been gone over and cleaned and completely serviced. When I got it open at home, the chainsaw was still covered with saw dust, including the handles, case and covers, the gas compartment was completely empty, the chain oil compartment was completely empty and there was still service rust on the chain. This indicated to me that they had never started it (no fuel or oil and the chain was completely dry) and that they took very little pride in their work as they returned it after they had worked on it and charged 88.00 no cleaner than when it came in. When I took it back to them, they simply showed where the edges of the chain saw had been sharpened, and looked at the bill and again told me all work had been done. They did not explain why it appeared still untouched, dirty, no fluids other than they must have overlooked refilling it so put chain oil in it, put it back in the case and handed it back. When I brought this to the attention of the owner/manager, and all my complaints and concerns and what should have been done, he too only kept asking, "so what would you like me to do". It all seemed obvious to me, clean the machine, fille the fluids, discount the price for the trouble and assure me it won't happen again. He did none of those. I will not return or encourage other to use them.

I couldn't get my rider lawn mower to start and discovered that my battery was dead. I bought a new battery and installed it, but it acted like it was still dead. I discovered that wires with a connector coming off the back of the ignition switch was unplugged. However, I could not find the mating plug so I called Castleton Outdoor Solutions for a service call. When the serviceman/driver arrived, it took him about a minute to see the problem, find the connectiong plug and get my mower running again. In replacing the battery, I apparently inadvertently unplugged the connector. Getting my mower running again was good but something just as good was there was NO CHARGE. This is the kind of service you rarely get let alone actually experience.

I purchased a new Toro Power Clear snow thrower from Castleton Outdoor Solutions in January 2011. Although I intended to purchase a snow thrower with a pull start only, the salesman talked me into buying one with both pull start and push button electric start. The snow thrower with electric starter was $100 more which increased the total price to $750. After using the Toro Power Clear snow thrower one time, the starter would no longer work forcing me to rely upon the pull start. The pull start worked reliably but due to spending an extra $100 on the electric starter, I returned the snow thrower to Castleton Outdoor Solutions for repair (Toro has a "2 Year - Guaranteed to Start" Full Warranty). I pushed the snow thrower into the repair department and waited for the "service technician" to acknowledge me. I then told the employee that the electric starter was not working and that I had just purchased the snow thrower within the past two weeks. He then looked at the machine and he stated it would need a part that was not in stock at the store and he would have to order it. At the time, he was not able to give me an estimate when the part would arrive and instructed me to leave the snow thrower in the repair department. After waiting a week, I called Castleton Outdoor Solutions to find out the status of the ordered part and spoke with the same "service technician". He stated that he "had no idea" when the part would arrive and told me he would call when it arrived. Not being satisfied with his response, I asked to speak with a manager and was then transferred to Scott Unison. I informed Scott that the employee in the service department was extremely rude and could not provide a timeline when the part would arrive etc. Scott said he would check into it and call me back. After waiting for a return call for a week, I called the store again to inquire about the status of the part on order. Once again I spoke with the same "service technician" and was given the same answer of "I have no idea" when the part will arrive. Due to spending $750 on a snow thrower, I was not willing to shovel snow the rest of the winter. I informed Castleton Outdoor Solutions that due to the expected snowfall, I would be picking up my snow thrower. The "service technician" was surprised that I wanted to pick up the snow thrower and added that the snow "would be melted before I would have to shovel." I have not been contacted by Castleton Outdoor Solutions since I picked up the snow thrower in late January 2011. I guess the part on order never came in......
