I was not pleased with this experience and recommend that others contemplating doing business with Bud demand a written contract and clear understanding that it can be cancelled within 3 days of its execution.
Description of Work: A neighbor had hired Bud to install new replacement windows so I discussed having him do the same for me. While measuring and estimating for my neighbor, Bud came to my house and measured my windows and promised to provide me with a price. On 4/30/09 he came to me with a proposed price of $10,377.48 and said he needed to order the windows by 5/2/09 in order to get the sale price. I said I would have him do the job and gave him a check for $4,000 which he had requested as earnest money. No written contract was executed. The next day 5/1/09 another contractor with whom I had also discussed having windows installed provided me with his quote which was over $1,100 less than Bud's for the same windows. I called Bud on 5/1/09 and told him I had changed my mind and was going to have someone else do the job. He told me "that' not how I do business and this is going to cost you" I asked him why it was going to cost me and he replied that he had spent time measuring my windows and placing the order. I asked him how much it would cost me and he replied "$200" Despite the fact that I knew that Indiana law gives individuals 3 days to cancel a contract and no written contract had been executed, I told him to return the $3800 which he did the same day.

Response from BUD'S CARPENTRY
Bud met with this member and measured the windows. He received the down payment of $4,000 and then ordered the windows. The following day he received a call from him stating that he had purchased windows cheaper than what Bud could sell & install them for. Bud went to see if the order had been sent in to the factory. It had not so the order was canceled. Bud then went to the bank and got a cashiers check for $3,800. Because he cancelled the order after it had been placed Bud felt it only fair to keep $200 to cover the time he had spent measuring & ordering the windows, canceling the order, & going to the bank. The member agreed he needed to be compensated for his time. We understand his frustration with the pricing. He had asked Bud to bid steel-clad windows. However, he told Bud he didn't want to spend the money on steel-clad windows and said he had purchased wood windows. The member is correct. A written contract should have been drawn up and signed. The day of a gentleman's handshake is over and Bud has learned a valuable lesson from this experience.

Did the extras that make a difference without being asked. The example is that he removed all the existing hardwood flooring that was not going to be used and bundled it together so we could reuse it in other areas of the house. He has a good eye for design what will look good in a space and what will work.
Description of Work: Built a new closet and knocked out an existing wall and created a new wall.

You won't find a better contractor than Bud Coleman. He started the project the week after we decided to start the project. He did excellent work! He did EVERYTHING from ceramic tile, plumming, electrical, drywall, grout and lighting. We had hired Bud before, so we were 100% comfortable with letting him work in the house when we weren't home. He made progress every day, and cleaned up his tools and mess each night. He is hard working, honest, and did a great job on our two bathrooms. If we had any concerns or changes he handled them promptly. He does excellent work and we could not be happier. He came in lower on the estimate provided on the 1st bathroom, and higher on the 2nd due to some material and issues that became necessary. Overall, I would hire Bud again to do just about anything around my house. He is honest, hard working, on time, and a very nice, trustworthy person.
Description of Work: Bud completely remodeled 2 bathrooms in our home. In the first bathroom he re-grouted the shower tile, replaced the vanity, countertops, fixtures, mirror and lighting. He also installed new fans, and ceramic tile on the floor, patched drywall, and primed the walls. In the 2nd bathroom Bud installed a walk in shower, put in tile surrounding the unit, did the plumming, and installed glass doors. He also took out 2 windows in the room and replaced the exterior siding and interior drywall. He installed a new toilet, vanity, countertop, all fixtures, and installed ceramic tile on the floor.

Bud Coleman promptly returned our original phone call. He came to our house to view the job, arriving on time. I asked him for an estimate. He said it would take him a couple of days. After one week passed, I called him. He said it would take 2 more days for him to give me an estimate. In the meantime, I called another Angie's List carpenter who has viewed the job, gave us an estimate, and has built the mantel. It is now more than 3 weeks since Bud viewed the job. I have never heard back from him. I am still waiting on his estimate. Bud lost this job because he is unresponsive and seems uninterested in taking on this work. He seems like a nice guy. I will keep his business card to remind me to never call him again. His delay held up work being performed by other contractors in the same area of our home.
Description of Work: Bud's Carpentry failed us. He viewed the job, then failed to give an estimate. We wanted to hire him to install a mantel above our fireplace.

Bud came the day after I called him and gave me an estimate. We had a different company do a terrible job on our cabinets and left things looking terrible. Bud came in, saw how it should have been done and drew up plans to fix things. He is a very nice man who has been doing this long enough to know how things SHOULD look in a kitchen. He told us what would look best, and gave us suggestions on how to tie in the whole look by adding molding and trim. He came three days later to do the job. He had already pre-cut the wood and pieces he needed, so he was in and out in one day. He is a perfectionist and does exceptional work. I am already making a list of other projects that I would like him to do.
Description of Work: Bud built in our refrigerator and added trim and molding to tie in the new carpentry with our existing kitchen cabinetry. He also moved an electrical outlet for us.

We were extremely pleased with the results. Bud measured the space and then custom built the slide out tray and cabinet front for it. Installed it in one day. It looks great.
Description of Work: Bud made a custom under the counter trash collection tray for us. It replaced a trash compactor which was no longer operating.

BUD ARRIVED AND WAS PLEASANT AND NICE. HE HAD PROMPTLY RESPONDED TO MY TELEPHONE CALLS AND ARRIVED ON TIME FOR THE ESTIMATE. I THEREFORE EXPECTED TO HEAR BACK FROM HIM WITH AN ESTIMATE, BUT I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN. HIS DAUGHTER WAS HAVING A BABY THE WEEKEND THAT WE MET FOR AN ESTIMATE, AND HE SUGGESTED THAT I CALL HIM IF I DIDN'T HEAR BACK FROM HIM, BUT THIS DIDN'T SIT GOOD WITH ME. IF SOMEONE WANTS MY BUSINESS, I EXPECT TO HEAR BACK FROM THEM. I DON'T EXPECT TO HAVE TO BUG THE COMPANY. I CERTAINLY WOULD'VE UNDERSTOOD A DELAY DUE TO HIS GRANDBABY'S BIRTH, BUT IT'S NOW BEEN SEVERAL WEEKS.

BUD IS THE TYPE OF PERSON YOU WANT TO KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE HOUSE PROJECTS. HE HAS A FAIRLY SMALL OPERATION, SO THERE ISN'T THE OVERHEAD TO COVER THAT OTHERS MAY HAVE.
