There were a few bumps along the way but overall I'm very happy with the end result. Allen, the Division Manager was very professional, easy to talk to and addressed all my concerns to my full satisfaction. The tread and riser installer Mike does very good work. He was punctual, professional and polite. The staircase handrail post at the bottom of the staircase presented a challenge to work around and ensure a tight fit. One tread had to be redone. Custom stained treads were delivered to them several days past the anticipated delivery date and job was not completed as originally planned. It was clear the company works hard to please its customers and I would not hesitate in using them again in spite of the problems and delays I encountered.
Description of Work: Remove old carpeting on the staircase, install wood treads, white risers followed by a carpeted runner.

When I first called to ask some questions about vinyl flooring versus laminate, I didn't have a great experience with the salesperson who answered, Hilary. I found her to be condescending and she sounded completely bored until I mentioned I would probably stop in--then she perked up and gave me her name! I almost didn't go, but saw some encouraging Angie reviews, so ventured in with my husband, hoping we wouldn't encounter her. Luckily, we met Dar, who was absolutely wonderful! She listened to our needs and took a lot of time with us, and gave us some great suggestions. Everything went smoothly from there, and we also loved the installers-- they were extremely professional and knowledgeable. There was a small chip in the middle of the dining room floor I found after they left, and they came back out and repaired it seamlessly. I will certainly go back there for any flooring needs--especially if Dar is still there!

The worst installation ever. I waited a year to review to see if problems abated and they didn't. Each bedroom door has a visible seam across the threshold and the seam in the family room is almost in the center of the room. They came out twice to try to fix the problem but it did't help. They said give it time. I have. The carpet looks worst than the 20 year carpet it replaced. After this review I was called and visited by reps of Blakey's. They said they could improve the appearance of the seams. They came back and spent about an hour working and the results were impressive. I guess I just don't understand why this wasn't done originally.

Response from Blakley's Flooring
After seeing this review on Angie's List Blakley's called the customer and our installation supervisors visited with Mr. [removed member's name] last week. We agreed to "work" on the seams in the doorways to try to make some additional minor improvements We also spent time explaining why the seam placements in the rooms are where they are. These seams all are in the best places possible and are all professionally done. We also agreed to patch an area in their carpet where there was cat damage. We will do this at no charge. Here is a little bit more background on their purchase: The customer originally ordered a heavier weight, higher pile carpet for the high traffic areas and a lower pile, less expensive carpet for the other rooms. When the two different carpets were seamed together at the doorways they did not like the look of the two different pile heights. Blakley's ordered the lighter weight, lower pile carpet for the areas that were originally the heavier carpet. We re-installed this carpet at our expense for them. Due to the fact that we had to break apart our original seams at the doorways and re-install the new carpet - these seams are more visible but certainly not what we would consider sub standard by any means. Hopefully this last effort on our part will leave a positive memory of Blakley's with our customer.

After selecting the carpet styles from among an extensive selection, it took about 10 days to get from warehouse and schedule installation. Installers arrived as scheduled with an adequate crew and removed and installed in about 5 hours. They cleaned up and hauled away the old for recycling. Seams were perfectly matched to the pattern. Very professional and cooperative.

They were good, quick, reasonable and professional.
We visited the Blakley showroom on a Saturday afternoon and were assigned salesperson Hilery. When asked what we were looking for, I responded that we looking for a travertine appearing tile white in color. Hilery haughtily replied that travertine was not white and proceeded to show me the tile samples. I shook off her unprofessional response as someone having a bad day and proceeded to look through the showroom samples. My wife and I found a style of tile that we liked and proceeded to talk price with Hilery. The price was competitive for the quality of the product and I was ready to go forward with the purchase. I was asked by Hilery if we needed installation. I innocently asked her if they had a installation price per square foot. Once again, Hilery responded in a very nasty tone "we don't price by square foot" with no response as to how Blakleys does price installation. I asked "so how do you price", but at that time I really did not care about installation nor purchasing flooring from Hilery nor Blakleys.

This is an unfortunate situation. We make no excuse. We take pride in serving our customers with respect and enthusiasm in our stores. We apologize for this situation. I am Blakley's Retail Manager and I was in the store on Saturday. As the customer was leaving the store, he found me and told me what had just happened. I was certainly surprised and disappointed hearing this information. I apologized and asked if he wanted a different sales associate to help him. At this point, he was understandably not interested. I assured him that this is certainly not consistent with how Hilery treats our customers. Hilery has been with Blakley's for over seven years. However, since it did happen and I cannot undo it, I assured him that I would discuss this matter and we will learn from it and Blakley's will work harder at making sure each and every guest has a good experience on our sales floor. I did follow through with this training opportunity with our staff. Blakley's Management

I needed the job done at a certain time and under a certain budget. They were about $300 less for a higher quality carpet than what other places were selling for their cheap carpet. The installers did really well; they were in and out in about two days. One day was used for floor prep and the other for installation.

I got quotes from four different places that specialized in flooring. I ended up going with Blakley's because of the sales person, who was great, the price and the 50 year warranty of the floor. Overall, the job was difficulties - but there were several difficulties. First, I waited over a month to use the installers recommended by the salesperson. This was a big and expensive job for me and I wanted a quality install. On several occasions, the installers were late - which was frustrating. I would get up very early - do what i needed to do to prepare for their arrival - and then they would be as much as an hour late. This was very frustrating! Some days, they were on time though. Not only did they arrive late on about half of the days, but they left by 1-3pm. Never were they at the house later than 3pm. I wanted the job done and I was frustrated by the early departures without explanation. I understand they may have needed to do something else, but being notified about how long they expected to be at the house would have been very helpful in the planning of my day. When they began to rip out the old flooring, they discovered asbestos tile. So, instead of the floor being glued down and it had be laid over the asbestos tile. To my surprise and despite everything I read and everything I was told by other installers, they charged me MORE $$ to float the floor instead of gluing. Additionally, when they ordered the needed trim pieces I wasn't asked what type of transition I preferred (edge or T molding). The molding was also VERY expensive. AND, they had a carpet guy come out twice to fix the edges and I was NEVER told what this would cost. Also, when they got to another part of the house...they said the asbestos tile could be easily removed so they removed it - so the floor has a slant from one room to the next. Why couldn't they take out the asbestos tile in the other room? The tile guys that just did a section of floor tile did. They said it came out easy. And as I understand it, asbestos tile is mostly a problem if you have to chip away at it - not if it comes up in pieces. Attention to detail was also an issue. The installers worked in a rushed fashion. I like a worker who hustles, but not one who rushes and then makes mistakes. They put in trim sloppily. Lots of gaps. Which at first they said they would not add caulk - but that i would have to do it! When you hire someone to put in a floor and nail the trim, you expect the finishing work. The only reason they ended up doing the finishing work is because there were some VERY BAD cuts - leaving big gaps at some corners. Despite this, I am so glad they did the caulking. Finally, the most troubling thing of the install was the conversations the installers started with me. Again and again. Most of which I found offensive. I just tried to move it along as much as I could. They were in the middle of a job, I wanted my house back, I wanted the job done. Overall, my experience with Blakley's was okay - but the install was very disappointing. This was a $10K plus job - I deserved and paid for better service. I would not hire Blakley's again. They need better communication and more attention to detail.

Response from Blakley's Flooring
Blakley's will make sure our customer receives this response directly as well. We agree that the communication along the way should have been better on our part. We should certainly share our concerns, difficulties, and any additional costs as we move forward on any project with the home owner. The most difficult part of estimating any hard surface project is not knowing what you will encounter under the existing flooring before you begin the pull-up. In this case we encountered asbestos tile. In most of the area the tile was still secure and we legally cannot remove. In a small section of the L-shaped hallway there was about a 2' x 4' section that the tile was no longer secured. This was removed because you cannot install over loose tiles. Our installers did not notice any dip in the floor after the pad and material was installed. We had not ordered transition strips before beginning because we truly did not yet know what would be required. Our installers discussed transitions options with the customer and thought they had agreement. If this was confusing, we again apologize. Floating floors can be more expensive due to the added pad cost and need for transitions. We believe that the finished product was installed the best way possible. We agree that the attention to detail on the trim work was lacking. We did caulk all these areas to improve it. Our installers should not be late for any job without calling. We should never appear to rush through a project. None of our conversations with customers should ever be offensive and clearly we need to work on communicating better. We make no excuses for these. We only will try to improve in the future. We share all this information with our staff and our installers monthly to do just that. I cannot undo what happened on this job. I again apologize that it did not go as smoothly as the vast majority of our work.

It took them one day to complete. At least 3 employees came out to do the installation. It would have been nice to have a better clean up after they left. For an example I wished they would have vacuumed the carpets. They did have a large carpet selection to choose from and their pricing was competitive.

We are a non-profit organization serving the Near Westside of Indianapolis with a mission of purchasing abandoned houses, rehabilitating them, and selling them to low income families. Blakley's sold new carpet to us for our bedrooms at a great price. The installers came quickly after our purchase to install the carpet and did a great job. Blakley's is a great company with great employees and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in flooring!

I liked their pricing of the carpeting, I liked that they don't charge extra for the strips, or the removal, and I love the way that they estimator came out. He was very professional, he measured the rooms, and they emailed me the estimates. I was not able to do the whole job at once, and I had to piece meal it, and they worked with me very well, and were very good at coming out, and installing a room or two at a time. They were here when they said they would be here, and the sales people were extremely knowledgeable when I called them and needed to talk to them. The Blakely installation representative was scheduled to arrive at 8 am on January 20th and actually arrived around 9:15 am. When I called the Blakely's scheduling representative at 9 am to inquire about the missed appointment, I was told that the installer should have called me if he was going to be late. This did not happen. Had I received a call, the punctuality and professionalism ratings would have been higher. Upon arrival, the installer stated that he was there to repair the wood floors and I showed him the issues we were experiencing. I had painstakingly marked with colored tape the 100+ spots where there was a hollow sound when tapping on the boards so that he would know where the additional glue was needed. A few of the boards squeak and visibly move downward when walked on. He appeared overwhelmed by the amount of work and stated he understood that he would just be replacing a couple of boards. It seemed that none of the pertinent information from the two inspection reports or the Blakely's/builder repair agreement was shared with the installer. He arrived without any glue and without a glue injection kit. The fact that he was not equipped with the information and materials he needed to do his job affected the responsiveness and quality ratings. He went outside to his van to call the Blakely's office to determine what to do. He returned to count the number of tape markings (~125), took photos, and then returned outside to call the office again. After about an hour, I received a call from Blakely's scheduler (while installer was still outside in his van) indicating that they were planning to locate a glue machine from another division and would need to reschedule the appointment. The scheduler was very professional and apologized for the inconvenience caused. I did burn vacation time and no progress was made on the floor repairs, so I appreciated her apology. Due to the business relationship between Blakely's and the builder, Blakely's will have to be used in the future for the repairs. I do not know if I would select Blakely's to complete any new flooring jobs at our home. Seven service appointments and two installation representatives later, Blakely's completed the work to address the lack of transfer of glue adhesive. In the process, our aggregate stone porch was stained with chemicals used and such actions were denied by the installation representative responsible. Thankfully, Gates (a Blakely's division) addressed the issue to our satisfaction.
Description of Work: Following two separate flooring inspections, an agreement was made between Blakely's and the home builder to repair the installation-related flooring defects, e.g., lack of transfer of glue adhesive between engineered hardwood boards and concrete slab. Blakely's finally completed the task of injecting glue under the boards.

The sales process and scheduling went very smoothly. The installers were scheduled to arrive to our house to start the installation between 12pm-2pm. They called around 1:30 and said that they would be there soon. Over an hour later, they showed up to begin the install. When they arrived, they smelled strongly of marijuana. The carpet was installed and looked great. However, our entire 3rd floor of our house (where the carpet was installed) smelled very strongly of marijuana for several hours. The odor did not dissipate for over 24 hours which made us believe that the smoking occurred in the van and the carpet was exposed to the smoke. As part of the contract, they were to clean up after the installation. They did clean up some of the mess, but there was still bits of carpet and dust all over. I would not call what they did cleaning after the install. Also, we noticed that our hardwood step was damaged during the installation. I contacted Blakley's about the damage and they indicated that they would repair the step in a timely fashion. I also reached an agreement with them that I would pay the balance due (50% of the total price) once the damage was repaired. I took a morning off of work so that someone from Blakley's could come and inspect the damage and determine how to best fix the step. They said that they could tell that the step was damaged by the installers during the installation and would require sanding and a coat of poly. Several weeks later, they sent someone to fix the step. However, he did not know what was required to fix it even though someone had been out to assess the damage already. He did not have the tools to repair the step with him. While I waited for scheduling to call to reschedule the repair, I was contacted twice to pay the balance of the bill. Both times I instructed them that I would be happy to pay the balance once the agreed upon work was completed. They rescheduled the repair and came to fix the step. The step was fixed adequately, but it does not look like it did before and you can clearly see where it was sanded. Again, they did not clean up after the repair. We had dust from the sanding all over our steps and our third floor. I only spoke the the manager once time during this entire time consuming and frustrating process. I never received an apology for the trouble or the hassle of the installation and repair. He only stated that he was surprised by our troubles and would make sure that the damage was repaired. The balance due was paid a day or two after the step was repaired. I went into the store to pay the balance and never received an apology. My husband and I took several days off of work to have the carpet installed and the step repaired. We should not have had to take time off of work for their mistake. I am very frustrated by the customer service that I received. I will not use them again even though the carpet looks great.

I called our customer personally as soon as I heard of the reference to the possible marijuana use of one of our installers. At Blakley's we take pride in our service and our installation quality which includes the type of people that we have working in your homes. I did apologize for what appeared to have taken place and for the damaged step as well. I had discussions the very next day with my installation supervisor and the men on the job that day. Since this type of incident has not ocurred in the last ten years that I can recall, this was new territory for me. My installers, which I have known for several years, denied the accusation. Of course, I cannot be sure since I was not there. I realize our customer smelled something and that is typically a very distinct smell. We take this very seriously and I assured our customer that this was the case. We did not send the same crew out to her home again. We would never do that. On the first trip out to repair the step, we realized that the damage was deeper than first anticipated. Rather than try to do a poor repair on it, we rescheduled for another day with the proper equipment. This is disappointing but sometimes that happens. I did not realize that our customer had such ill feelings on the way this was handled. Blakley's has had years and years of Super Service Awards with Angie's List. I know I cannot undo what happened here or make this consumer feel different about us now. I can only strive for our company to do better and again apologize.
