"As we discussed in correspondence with you, working in crawl spaces we will often encounter animals. Whether domestic or wild, we run across racoons, opossums, snakes, mice, cats and occasionally a dog. I understand that you feel we "purposefully " locked up your cat in the crawl space of your home. I can assure you this is not the case. The last thing we want in your crawl space is an animal of any kind that could possibly harm the animal or destroy the product we just installed. I spoke with the crew about this situation and the foreman stated that he saw a cat in your crawl space but when he tried to approach it the cat darted away. They searched for the cat in the crawl but did not see it. According to your husband, the cat must have been hiding in a cavity where our crew did not see it. Your home is an older home built in a "balloon" style construction, whereby there are wall cavities that are exposed to the crawl space, apparently where your husband found the cat. Assuming the cat had left, our crew closed up the crawl. For this we certainly apologize and for not contacting you sooner of this situation. Our crew certainly did not intend to cause you or your cat any harm. Again, we see animals in crawl spaces very often and we try to keep them out. Americrawl has been working on basements, crawl spaces and foundations since 1992. We have won several awards for customer service. We have also run into several animals in crawl spaces during the last 25 years. This is the first time we have accidentally closed up an animal in a customer's home. But, again, this was an accident, as we certainly did not intend to close your cat up in the crawl space. Although we do appreciate your comments in your correspondence with us that we "do great work" we will now discuss with our customers the importance of pet containment while we work on their homes."
For the drainage system, they used jack hammers to break out the basement floor for a foot or so away from the walls. They dug out the gravel fill and installed a 4" slotted drain tile next to the footing and connected it to an existing drain tile. They then placed a plastic piece against the wall that will allow water seeping through the walls to be directed to the drain tile. I was dissapointed in the quality of the concrete work done to finish the floor. The original floor was 4" thick, but only poured back 2" or so, I asked them to lower part of the drain tile and back fill before they poured the concrete. They reluctantly did so and got it a little deeper. The concrete finish was not nearly as smooth as the original floor.
In September of 2012, faxed the original estimate back to Americrawl and asked for an updated estimate. I waited until mid-October for the estimate to be returned, called twice to make certain someone had received it (left messages both times, but never received a return telephone call), and then reposted the job on Angie's List in order to get quotes from some other contractors. It was shortly thereafter that Americrawl returned the estimate with updated numbers.
After I had contacted two other contractors who refused the job, I returned the contract with a down payment to Americrawl. They scheduled the job for a day on which is was impossible for me to be at the house, but because the crawlspace entrance was outside I told the scheduler to go ahead with the job. I got a telephone call later that day, saying they needed an electrical outlet. I explained that I would have to open the house for them. The job was rescheduled and I promised that I would be there to let them in.
I made arrangements at my job to be off the morning they were scheduled to come out. I had been told that the work crew should arrive between 9:30 and 10:30 in the morning. No one had arrived by 10:45, so I called the company to see if the work was still on board for that day. I was told that it was, where upon I mentioned that no one had shown up at the house yet. The scheduler told me she would try to locate the work crew and call me right back with an ETA. I waited another fifteen minutes, then left for work. I left my utility room door unlocked in the event the installers did show up.
When I arrived back home, I noticed that the dirt around the crawlspace had been disturbed but because it was dark by the time I came back, I did not see whether the job had been completed. The installers had left an invoice, which made me believe the job was complete. However, three days later I received a telephone call advising me that the installers were unable to complete the job because a gas line was in the way of the location in which they were to put a "turtle" and that I either had to have the gas company move the line or change my plans. As it was already very late in the season and snow was predicted for the next week, I opted to change my plans and just have the enclosure switched to a door. They were then able to complete installation the next day.
The change in plans did reduce the cost but I was presented with an amended invoice two weeks after the job was finished. The job itself was done professionally and looks good - however, because of the general unresponsiveness of the company and the numerous delays that created many of the problems that occurred along the way, I have to downgrade my overall experience.
This firm may be fine to work with AS LONG AS there is someone who is able to stay at home all day and wait for communications and workmen. However, because I work full-time and have a long commute, this was not something that was feasible for me to do.
I scheduled the work to be done about 3 months after I signed the contract. So when the time came to have the work performed, I asssumed someone would call to confirm the date and time of the crew's arrival. Nope. No one called or said what time they woud be at my house. So I called the night before, leaving a voicemail asking, yet no one called me the next morning. I had taken the day off of work to be there when work was being done. They showed up at 9:30 am. None of the labor crew introduced themselves, asked any questions, shook no hands. Just said we are here to do work. At the end of that day, they just said "we are leaving and will be back same time tomorrow." The next day they showed up around the same time and just went to work. When they were finished, none of them took the time to show the work they had performed, nor took the time to answer any questions that my wife or I may have had. They just handed us the bill for the remaining amount and left. Also clean up could have been much better. No attempt to clean the dust and debris on my basement stairs and still found chuncks of concrete on floor in basement.
After a few days, when I had time to really inspect thier work, I noticed they had broken a decent sized chunk off of my cynder block wall. What upset me was not that it happened, but that no one told me it happened, nor was it even attempted to be repaired (even though it says they will do so in the contract!). I also saw that instead of using the AkwaGuard system they so proudly promote on the website and sales, they used perforated PVC pipe! Which is a material that they call out-dated and subpar. Also, supposedly, this system needs annual "maintenace", which to this day still has not be explained. So I called them to express my displeasure with the whole experience. Especially the feeling of getting "baited and switched". I am most shocked at how uneager the manager is to offer any customer service and answer my questions! It has been like pulling teeth to get him to come 2 miles to my house to look and the chunk missing in my wall and answer my remaining questions. This company obviously just wanted paid and doesn't care about building relationships nor good reviews.
The guys who came out and did the work arrived on time, and got this extensive job done in three days. The crawl space is clean, covered well, and they cleaned up every bit of debris they hauled out (old insulation, rotten wood, etc).
Would highly recommend them to anyone needing crawl space repair!
