I went online to see what we could do to refinance our 1st & 2nd mortgages. American Bank called and said it was no problem. That we would need $350.00 appraisal fee up front. When dealing with James, I specifically asked him what the homes in our sub division was appraising at. He told me between $131,000 and 139,000. That we should have no problem appraising at 129,000 (amount needed to refi both 1st and 2nd) I had explained to James that I was currently on Short Term Disability at work, he said no problem. They could use my husband's income alone. When the appraisal came back, it came back at $115,000 and we were told that my husband's income was not enough. After finally receiving a copy of the appraisal by email, I asked them where they got the 131,00-139,000 from our sub division. (like homes were selling from 110,000 - 118,000) We were told via email that the homes on both sides of us and the homes across the street from us appraised for the higher amounts 131,000- 139,000. I received my credit card statement in the mail yesterday and they charged us $450 instead of $350 and we have absolutely nothing to show for it. In dealing with them, I found them to be dishonest and said whatever it took to get $450 from us under false pretenses. Since I am on disability and receiving minimal pay, we were trying to refinance to save $, not be ripped off by these shady characters.
