First, it was hard getting ahold of them and committing to a time to come by for an estimate (wife was sick which I understand but missing the first appointment entirely and then an hour+ late for 2nd time inconvenienced me). No communication was given throughout the project - I didn't know when workers were coming or going. After the floor was installed, I had to call multiple times (once the son put me on hold for 5+ minutes trying to find his dad - not ok) and I finally received a callback that the carpet was coming. Technology was also a struggle. They also do not have (or use) an answering machine or cell phone. I asked for the invoice to be scanned and sent to me to review, and the owner had his son take a picture and text it to me on his personal phone. It's 2018 the last time I checked. :) After the carpet was installed, I realized a divider section between the bathroom and hallway was not put in. I called three times one week, then once the following week. After that, I filed a complaint w/ the BBB. No official response/resolution yet, but I would definitely not refer them to anyone, mostly because of the lack of communication and not finishing the job. They (surprisingly? does everyone do this?) requested payment in full before the work began; I was leery in paying the full amount before it was completed, and now I wish I would have bargained for half the amount. And I really wish I would have looked at Angies List reviews first! Looks like I'm not alone in my assessment.

Absolutely awful! Not even half way into the job, the owner asked if it would be ok to go do work on another larger house, mine is about a little over 1,000 sq. ft. I had already paid the man for half of the job in cash! Wished I had said NO!!!!! We are now remodeling the bathroom and have found there is no flooring under the vanity. I called the owner today to ask why? He said they don't do work under vanities due to plumbing. Well, they put hardwood under my toilet, that involved plumbing. Wished the man had told me this at the beginning because I would have removed my vanity so they could do the job right in the bathroom. They left huge gaps all around the walls and kitchen cabinets, so huge, I demanded woodwork be put up to hide some of the gap. Was that ever a mistake! In every room they put up woodwork, I have dents and holes! This was mentioned in another review on Yelp. So, when I told the owner about the dents and holes he acted as if I was liar! I showed him all these dings and holes and nothing was ever done. In the Master Bedroom I have 1 corner where the boys (yes, boys) couldn't cut a 45 degree angle to match up the woodwork together. I learned this in my 7th grade shop class and I was a girl then and can still do them today! This man is a little hateful man and told me if I was going to ***** (his words), he would hang up. I told him I wasn't ******** but letting him know about the vanity and my disgust with the hole job that his company did. He then told me to go ahead and right all the reviews I wanted...well I am now starting and have already 3 of them on different sites. The little hateful man doesn't know who he is dealing with. How he gets 3 1/2 stars on the BBB site I don't know. But maybe after reading my review he may lose a star or two hopefully. Maybe that might clean up his language. I doubt he would of used that word to my husband. They used a lot of my own tools along with a Wet/Dry Vac they didn't bother to clean out. For at least a month, remnants of wood flooring and black paper laid at my back door. I was told he didn't have a truck to come clean it up but eventually he did. Why didn't they just clean up as they went? I did most of the clean up and for months later was still cleaning up the black paper pieces that kept showing up all over the house. He mentioned he had to have all new underlayment put down....hey, I paid for it and the labor! What is this man's problem? He's a little hateful man who didn't like me calling him out on the mat for such a very unprofessional job. Not only was the job handled very unprofessionally but his crew as well were unprofessional both in work and appearance. The supervisor for the crew would leave for hours or not even show up. Not only that the supervisor was an alcoholic and I knew it because sometimes when he was there I could smell alcohol on his breath and it would be 9:00 a.m. The owner claims he doesn't use subcontractors, I asked them all if they were subcontractors and they all said yes. I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use this company again or recommend to anyone who asks me for a recommendation. I still have 2 rooms I would like to put hardwood down in but this company won't be getting my business. I probably could have done the job better than they or may have even had a better job done if I had gone to Discount Carpet in Avon or up on Lafayette Road. What should have been about a week's worth of work, since the house is a little over 1,000 sq. ft., turned into a 2 month nightmare. I made the mistake of not complaining but by then I wanted them out of my house and gone for good! So, if you are looking for Less than Discount service, labor and finished job this would be the place for you! I would take pictures but it makes me so sick to look at all the flaws and I don't think there would be enough space for all the pictures to be posted! BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE

I LOVE the look and feel of my new carpet, and the installers did a great job. I wasn't home at the time of the installation, so I didn't give a rating on professionalism. I think the price is fair for the amount and quality of carpet. I had used A-1 previously to do my stairs, 1 room, and a closet all in the basement around 5 years ago, and they did a great job so I used them again. I shopped around first just to be sure I was getting the best price and quality, and I decided that A-1 was still the best. It took me a LONG time to make up my mind about which carpet I wanted, and Dennis (the owner) was most patient with me. He's very helpful at giving advice and information and knows everything about the products that he sells. I also absolutely love that you can take home as many samples as you want to and keep them for as long as you want to, and there's no charge or deposit for it -- one of the advantages of working with a small business instead of a big box store. I highly recommend A-1 Flooring and will use them again for my next flooring job.

We purchased and installed tile flooring throughout the common living areas of our house as well as had the carpet replaced in three bedrooms. The price could not be beat by competitors. We are relatively satisfied with the quality of work; however, Dennis did not make the process easy for anyone involved. He was late to more than one of our appointments and completely forgot about two scheduled appointments; underestimated the time it would take to complete the project; forgot to tell the tile layers the direction the tile was to be laid--fortunately we laid sample tiles out for the workers to see; did not record the color of grout stain we selected; failed to order the tile listed on his second page of measurements thus delaying the project; and was quick to point blame at others when we ran into each of these setbacks. The tile and carpet installers were extremely courteous and polite, and did quality work, but did not put up plastic sheathing to reduce the amount of tile dust that gathered over the rest of the house and forgot to cut a hole in the carpet for one of the duct work vents. We're pleased with the overall results of the project, but will not use this company again.

Had Gary as the installer, I have been in the carpet cleaning business for over 16 years, this installer is like a machine, want of the best in the industry. Any retailer can get teh same product. Sometimes carpet is relabeled to make it hard to compare apples to apples and price match. The owner will work with you on price, but installation is key. Recommend going with a virgin pad, as opposed to a rebound which is a mess of recyled stuff glued together, eliminates lumpy spots and wears better.

It went fine until about 2 months later and I noticed a brownish spot in one corner of the laundry room which wasn't something on top of the vinyl. Over the next few days, more purplish and brown spots appeared, and they were moving from the laundry room towards the kitchen. I figured out by talking to different people that the problem was probably mold and/or mildew - that possibly the old damaged area's subfloor hadn't been completely dry, or there was a mold problem in my crawlspace. I hired Service Master ($125 fee) to inspect the house: they didn't find any mold in the crawlspace, and a meter reading of the subfloor found it to still contain some moisture. The house had been empty for approximately 2 months, in winter. They concluded that by laying the new vinyl over the old and not making sure the subfloor was dry, this created a vacuum-type seal and caused the mold/mildew to develop between the layers of vinyl. When I contacted the A-1 owners, Mrs. Fecker was very nice. Mr.Fecker was not: he was very defensive, saying "there's no way" it was anything they did! Finally, I asked for their insurance carrier's information, so that I could submit a claim to them - he refused to give it to me, but instead brought the district rep for the vinyl company to inspect the floor, along with the installers. They all said IT WAS NOTHING THEY DID and there was nothing wrong (defect) with the vinyl. I knew there was nothing wrong with the vinyl - BUT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS COULD HAPPEN (by the so-called expert/owner) - I'd never have had the work done until it was safe. I filed a report with the Better Business Bureau and they tried to resolve it, but (this is the part that really made me angry) Mr.Fecker wrote them two letters (I received copies) that were full of lies - the biggest one saying that when he came over to install the transition strip (installers had the wrong one), he saw me moping up water with towels after my icemaker line broke !! I NEVER HAD A WATER LEAK OF ANY KIND ! I was livid that he would make up a lie like that, and put it in writing ! The moisture came from between the layers! Even the "expert" he sent back out later inspected my crawlspace and (just like Service Master) he saw old water stains under the laundry room, but the readings were normal. So, to end this mess, I gave up - hired a reputable company to install more vinyl - this time correctly: both layers of vinyl torn out, floor dried out for several days with fans/drying agent applied - and new underlayment over the subfloor. I haven't had any problems - and that was three years ago. I promised myself if I ever got the chance, I would tell about my experience with A-1 - not so much for the money it cost me (over $2500 altogether) , but for the lack of respect I received from Mr.Fecker - I did nothing wrong, except believe that was he knew what he was talking about. I could've forgiven a mistake, but when someone attacks your character, that's "bad business".
Description of Work: I hired this company to install vinyl (one-piece) in my recently purchased home, in the laundry room & kitchen. The previous home-owner had pulled up a large area of the old vinyl in the laundry room area from (I'm guessing) a water leak. I relied on the owner for his expertise and advise and when I asked him if he could lay new vinyl on top of the old, he said "yes", and the large area torn out of the old flooring "won't be a problem, we can use leveler so you won't be able to tell". The work was completed by his installers without any problems. I had to choose an inexpensive vinyl because of just buying the house.

Response from A-1 DISCOUNT FLOOR COVERING
The member was a customer who very unfortunately experienced a water problem and was unhappy with how her vinyl flooring reacted to the water problem. Our company involved the Better Business Bureau for arbitration in an attempt to allow the member a full understanding of why there was no claim for replacement. The newly installed vinyl floor needed to be replaced before its life cycle. She has, sort of, explained what occurred to her vinyl flooring. She admits to the fact that there was prior evidence of water in her crawl space. That is a very important piece of information to share, and I am glad she did. If her water problem occurred as she is expressing in her report from her existing subfloor being too wet for the first install then as a result the old vinyl would’ve shown signs of mildew and mold as her new vinyl was. It is fact that areas of the old vinyl was left down due to how hard it was for her to take up. The old vinyl was adhered to the floor as it should be. Since some of the old vinyl was taken up, to create a smooth surface for the new vinyl, a floor leveler was used as she mentioned. The old vinyl was glued well and was holding strongly to the existing dry subfloor. This bit of information she provided proves that the water problem occurred between the new vinyl and the vinyl that she chose to leave down. It was noted in her file, upon visiting her home to replace a metal after the installation, there were towels at the bottom front of her refrigerator door and they were wet with condensation from the seal on her refrigerator door not sealing. She was soaking up water that had been leaking for some time. It is common sense to realize that the water was obviously under the refrigerator as well. The member does not admit to this and here lies the problem. As a company looking at flooring with coloration problems this was an important note to list in her file on our paperwork. Her coloration problems were located at the nearest wall next to her refrigerator. Her sales invoice clearly reflects the existing vinyl was to be left down. The reason she chose to keep her old vinyl floor down was because she was trying to keep her costs down. She had just moved into this home and was strapped for cash. She was informed at the time of purchase that if she experienced water problems the vinyl that she left down would become an issue. She was told in detail how the old vinyl would act as a non porous barrier and would trap water. The member was provided a price for her flooring to be installed the proper way and she was given the price without take up of the old flooring. She made a choice based upon her pocket book. She could've spent that same money the first time with our store, only installing the flooring once. She cut corners and ended up with the problem. The member was a good customer to work with and we are very sorry that her first vinyl flooring didn’t last as long as it should have. She was pleased with the installation with exception of a wrong color metal and we did not hear from her again until her water problem. I am sorry that her opinion and experience was based upon her loss. It is a very important lesson to consumers, please make decisions based upon what is correct rather than what can be afforded. Patience really can be a good thing regarding so many decisions in life.

The owner came out to the home and gave me an estimate as he said he would. I found him to be most pleasant. The bid was very close to another bid that we got. I went to the showrooms of both of the bids to see the vinyl included in the bid price. I liked the flooring at A-1 better. Everything at the showroom went fine except that the owner/salesperson was not sure if he had enough vinyl in the style that I liked. He determined that it would be close and if needed, he could order similar vinyl to finish the small foyer with. The foyer and the kitchen are seperated by carpet and a wall so you cant see both at the same time. The owner/salesman informed me that he had the best installers around. As far as their work goes, it looked fine. They showed up late, left for a long lunch and left early. They showed up the next day to complete the work. It was discovered that there was not enough vinyl so they finished what they could. They did not attach the required plumbing line to the toilet that they pulled up. They were supposed to do that for me. The tenant was moving in in two days. They did not show up those two days to finish the toilet. The tenant moving in was not happy toward me as I promised that everything would be done on time. The flooring guys said they would be back on Monday. The tenant did not wait for them and hired a plumber to fix the toilet herself. It has been 1 month since they started and I still have no foyer flooring installed. They called the other day to let me know that the flooring was in.
