JD Holm & Sons

Jay and Terry Holm and their team did a great job. This is the second time they have undertaken a major project at our house; two years earlier they renovated our kitchen and two baths, installed new windows throughout the house, and painted the interior. They and their employees are not only true craftsmen but also genuinely nice people. They arrive on time as promised and work steadily and hard throughout the day--in this case working outdoors all day in the summer heat and humidity. Their prices are not inexpensive but, for us, the confidence we have in the excellent quality of their work and the professionalism of their team members makes the cost well worth it.

We invited J.D. Holm to evaluate feasibility and cost estimate of the design we envisioned. J.D. Holm has been very responsive about what was feasible, reasonable and provided a cost estimate that was accurate. They completely implemented our design and did a great job communicating any questions along the way. Their work was top notch and every one was great to work with. We are very happy with the results and would hire them again.

My one bedroom remodeling project had to change to a more pressing roof replacement. Initially I contracted with J D Holm & Sons for a small bedroom remodeling project but an ongoing roof repair done by a different contractor was not getting to the source of the roof leak after several attempts. I asked Jay Holm if his company could look at the roof and try to determine the problem. He and his worker got up on the roof and really looked it over. A couple of tiny problems were attended to that very hour. I was aware of the older age of the roof and after watching a home improvement channel show I realized my roof also lacked proper ventilation. When Jay Holm and I talked after the roof inspection he also noted the lack of proper ventilation. It was concluded that a new roof was the best option. Knowing I was on a tight budget, we discussed switching my deposit for the bedroom remodeling contact to a roof replacement contact. It was a great relief and I thought kindness that I would not lose my deposit. Things that initially drew me to J D Holm & Sons were the A rating on Angie's List and the A + listing at the Better Business Bureau. Then reading the reviews on those sites was encouraging. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that Jay Holm himself answered his phone when I called. He was cordial, unhurried and we scheduled a mutually convenient time in the very near future for him to come to my home and discuss the project. He arrived on time and made notes. Later I received an email that went over all that we had discussed. Actually any time we had a phone call the next day I would receive an email from Jay summarizing the phone calls. This really impressed me as very good customer service as I appreciate thorough follow through. So far it's been a positive customer service experience and the roof replacement should take place late summer.

J.D. Holm & Sons has delivered comprehensive contracting services for our family for many years. Jay, Owner and General Manager, and his team most recently completed an update of our home which included; removing wallpaper, replacing light fixtures, removing and installing carpet flooring, and patching and painting walls. This effort was delivered flawlessly i.e. within the agreed upon timeframe, budget and scope. Some key factors we valued in working with J.D. Holm: Responsiveness. This recent home update is not our first project with J.D. Holm. We have taken full advantage of their broad contract service offerings over the years. Past projects have included kitchen, bath and laundry room updates, house painting and a landscaping/deck refresh. We continue to return to J. D. Holm time and time again as they have earned our trust through their consummate professionalism.

the project took 8 months from start to finish, we are extremely pleased with the quality of work and craftsmanship detail. With any major projects issues come up that we were not planning on but the crew gave us different options and we worked through the problem. We would highly recommend Jay and his team. He showed up, a little late. He looked around and answered a couple of questions and said he would call in a couple of days, We never heard from him. We tried to call him several times and no answer. We left several messages and again, no answer. We were very disappointed. We would NOT recommend him!

On June 28 I requested a quote from JD Holm for a rather extensive interior remodeling project through Angie's List. To the company's credit, they responded the next day to advise me that they were scheduling several months out, and to let them know whether I was still interested. Based upon the glowing reviews on Angie's List, I responded immediately that I was still interested, and asked them to contact me to begin the process. Unfortunately, I never received a response to that e-mail. On or around July 16 I left a voice mail recapping what I've described above, and a week later still have received no response. Apparently they don't need any more customers. Following is Holm's initial e-mail and my response from the Angie's List website Good Morning Mr. Green, Thank you for your interest in our family business. We find ourselves in a season of high demand. We excel at the kind of work you describe. If your project is time sensitive and requires completion in the short term we likely will be disqualified and offer our regrets. If however, you are able to wait for about 16 weeks we are excited to introduce ourselves. Please consider the options and instruct us on how we can best serve you and your project. Is it possible for you to visit with us either in the evening or on a weekend (my wife works 8:30 to 6:00 generally during the week) so we can show you our house, describe the work we'd like to have done, and begin the process of brainstorming and progressing toward a proposal? 9:43 AM

Wonderful! JD Holm & Sons receive our highest recommendation and we are completely satisfied and impressed with the remodeling result. After obtaining several estimates and meeting a few contractors, we agreed to work with JD Holm after meeting Jay. He is extremely professional, efficient, and knowledgeable. JD Holm & Sons work to meet not only our expectations but also their own. We were provided with a realistic budget and timeline to perform professional painting of our entire home, creation of paneled walls, re-staining wood floors, enhancing staircase railings, refurbishing cabinets, performing tile work in the kitchen and living room, and installing new carpet and light fixtures. They are willing to work within your budget to provide options and alternatives. I would consider them perfectionists in a very positive way, and they strive to take into account the fine details of their projects. They take great pride in their work and it shows- you get what you pay for, and in our opinion, we are truly satisfied and relieved in working with JD Holm & Sons to improve our home. We definitely recommend their transparent and meticulous work.

James Holm & Sons just finished renovating my coach house and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience and results. From the beginning, meeting with Jay to go over my ideas and budget, it was clearly evident that this company was thoughtful, intelligent, highly skilled and considerate of me the client. It did take some time to get on the schedule as the company is in demand, but Jay kept in touch with me throughout the wait and it was certainly worth it. Once work began and I met the entire crew I could see each member was a consummate professional. Terry was amazing, ensuring all electrical, plumbing and carpentry was safe, durable, properly done as well as to my liking. John the Master Carpenter was effortlessly skilled. Matt, the Master Painter, took care with every surface; no spraying - all rolled and brushed on, multiple coats and the right type of paint for each room's use. Jason who worked on every part of the job was as capable at each aspect (electric, plumbing, carpentry, flooring, painting and tiling) as the masters and did a great job sorting out the preexisting bad wiring, making sure I understood all he did. Jerry, Matt's assistant painter was as careful and considerate as Matt and the rest of the crew. Each crew member worked hard every minute of their time here, they hardly took any breaks other than for lunch, which they almost always ate on site. The work went quickly and beautifully. There was never a problem they didn't have multiple solutions for. I'm so happy I chose this group. I know my home was done the best it could be within my budget. I also know if there is ever an issue, these guys will take care of it and me. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience.

Service man came out but never followed up. Nor did he respond to my calls.

We are very happy with our transformed living area, entrance and kitchen. The company kindly performed some small extra handyman work and went beyond expectations in a number of ways. J. and crew are professional, excellent craftsmen, trustworthy and make good use of their time. They arrived half an hour or so after the quoted time, most days, but that was not a major problem for us.

JD Holm is an absolutely amazing company. This is a family owned business. The work they performed was outstanding. They completely transformed my home by remodeling the first floor, finishing my basement, adding a multilevel deck, and doing substantial landscaping. The JD Holm team is a small group of true professionals. Their attention to detail is extraordinary. Their design plans, and all aspects of each component of their work, from rough-in to finish carpentry and painting was over the top excellent. They removed debris and cleaned up the work areas daily. Anyone looking for a wonderful remodeling experience would be well served by JD Holm.

Very, very well. We are beyond happy, pleased and satisfied! It was a great pleasure working with Jay and his great crew. They were all very professional and the cleanup they did at the end of each day made living through this process a breeze. We will be using JD Holm and Sons again.

Copy of letter to Jay: We just wanted to tell you how happy we are with the stained window sills and the project as a whole. Every morning as I walk through the front room and the sun shines in on the sills I appreciate the extra efforts you and your people made to make our window replacement project a beautiful success. We know how much extra work it took to strip and re-stain the sills, but we appreciate it everyday. It is extremely difficult finding companies that are as interested in doing a quality job as they are in making money. Most companies strive for adequate not quality. This entire project from the dismantling, to the install, to the finishing, to the clean up was done in an efficient, close attention to detail and caring manner. Along the way your crew thought things through, not just what it was going to take to accomplish the task at hand but what would be best for us in the long run. Some of the solutions they came up with from removing the windows with a minimum of inside plaster wall damage, to how to fit the kitchen windows, to finishing the sills were exceptional. Their daily clean up before leaving and their final clean up was way above and beyond expectations. Please extend to all of them our appreciation for a project well done.

I would hire this service again in a heartbeat. I am extremely pleased with the work that was done as well as the courtesy and cleanliness at the time of service. They were very upfront about the time frame and cost of the project. All the workers were so polite and understanding of my dogs in the house. Really nice people. I wouldn't have cared if they all were named Darryl and had hung around for another couple of weeks. :)

Incredibly professional, talented design and construction team. They worked to meet our specific needs and stay within our budget. In the kitchen, they repainted existing cabinets and then designed and custom built cabinets around our refrigerator and new island between kitchen and dining room. The cabinets matched perfectly so it looks like all cabinets are new and custom. They knocked down the wall between kitchen and dining to add the new island. Any concerns we had they were quick to address and fix. Barb, their design consultant was incredibly helpful in redesigning our kitchen and showing us great options for countertops, cabinets, fixtures, etc. The bathroom was a complete gut and expansion. A previously crumbling shower stall and tiny jack and jill bathroom was transformed into a bright and spacious master bathroom. Beautiful tile work and updated electrical. The renovations added tremendous value, functionality and aesthetics to our 1955 ranch home. We would absolutely use them again. They are very busy, but worth the wait and worth the money. You will get top notch service from start to finish. We consulted with them in person at least 5 times before the project even started. Jay and Barb came to our house each time to discuss project, bring samples and design sketches. The whole construction crew (4 gentlemen) where incredible talented, very easy to be around and friendly. The project took 5 weeks and we lived in the house during the construction. They cleaned up all dust at the end of each day and worked swiftly and efficiently. We got to watch the entire process and feel that they did not take a single short cut. Beautiful work!!

Our walk in shower has tile on one wall that is way out of plumb and there is a large gap in the tile in one corner over half the height of the shower. Our bathroom floor gets wet after every shower because they did not slope the threshold inwards - it is actually sloping outwards. I received a $500 credit for the poor workmanship, but I should have asked for more so it would have been reworked. We had to have a new stainless kitchen sink replaced because one of the tile guys scratched it up cleaning his tools in it. Jay paid for that, but one would think an experienced professional would know better, especially when we told them there was a utility sink in our basement they could use. We were really sold by Jay on the fact that he has very experienced, long term employees, but I do not now believe that is the case. Both ceilings in the bathrooms had drywall repair that was needed and even after complaining more than once of the repair quality, there are still very visible issues on both ceilings. I had to argue with them about several things throughout the project to get what we wanted and we still were not satisfied overall. We paid top price and expected top quality. We received average quality overall due to poor workmanship on the walk in shower and poor drywall repair on both ceilings. Get everything in writing if you go with this company.

We did not end up having work done with this contractor, but had several conversations with him including an on-site estimate. Based on current dealings, when we decide to move forward with our project, we will not hesitate to use him.

I originally called Mr. Holm to get a bid for a stairwell rebuild. Unfortunately, his schedule was too backed up for me to wait. However, he was entirely upfront about his timeline and very considerate. Since I had experienced difficulties in finding someone else to do the work, I asked if he would be willing to at least give me an assessment of the work that needed to be done. About a week later he was able to fit me into his schedule. He arrived exactly on time and was nothing but courteous and professional. He has even provided the contact to the structural engineer he uses, the next step for my project. Without a doubt, I would recommend Jay Holm to anyone looking for work to be done. While it might take a few phone calls to get in touch and several extra weeks before they get started, it is worth the wait. If you want the best, this is your guy.

He really did a very good job for the most part, and the bannisters seemed secure, but on the top of one of them he only thought he anchored it to a stud and anchored it to plain plaster only. A few months after the installation, the top of the bannister shook free. They're still good at the bottom, and the one on the left is securely anchored to a stud, but the one of the right had to be re-fixed. (The date and price on this are approximate. It was a couple of years ago, and he charged a very fair price for his labor. Angie's List is asking me about this now, though.)

replaced improperly installed sink drain. the pipes were installed in a way which allowed smelly gases to accumulated.

J.D. Holm and Sons were excellent to work with! Although they were quite busy this summer, I was always kept up to date on what was happening. There were fast responses by email or phone, which was greatly appreciated! The weather worked out well and my small project was able to be done in two days. They tore down the old pool deck, disposed of the wood, took care of the cement pad, and cleaned up the mess! I couldn't have asked for better work! The guys were efficient, well-mannered, and fast. I was surprised by how quickly the deck went down. The price feels like a steal, especially when I was quoted quite a bit more from other companies. I will definitely use them again for projects in the future and highly recommend them!

I sent a message via Angie's List for an estimate on a reconstruction job. I left my cell number. That was in March 2015. I never received any call/contact. Professionally, someone could pick up the phone and say "I don't want the job".

Did a good job except for dripping paint that had dried on one side of a pocket door, but the worker came back the very next day and fixed it...it looks good now. I think the cost of the painting was actually between $1500.00 and $1700.00, which I thought was too high for such a small house, but overall they did a really good job.
