My husband and I contracted with Naville Construction to build our home for $717,000. After evaluating the architect plans, Mr. Naville felt he could do the project within budget. I received monthly detailed invoices which I promptly authorized payment from our building loan. Mr. Naville did discuss some changes to plans which were portrayed as minor and would not affect the budget. On the day we moved in, Mr. Naville presented us with a final invoice that totalled $80,000 over budget. When asked to explain, we received three different spreadsheets. All three were different and we never really did get a clear accounting of the overage. The first year, we needed to completely remove the natural tilework in the master bath shower because the drip pan in the shower was incorrectly installed and we had a leak into the first floor ceiling. The tile had to be removed, a new drip pan installed and sealed, and the tilework re-done. We understood we would have two water heaters, but wound up with only one. The water heater became unrepairable in year 3 and we had to replace the water heater with a new, energy effecient one for $5,000. The heating and air conditioning began to cause us problems the first 6 months of occupancy. After multiple repairs and one compressor replacement, we consulted with two other independent heaing and air conditioning contractors. We were told by both that these were bottom of the line units that were not able to heat and cool the size home they were installed in. We had three separate units and each one became unrepairable in year 5. The replacement cost was $40,000. I feel I was not kept informed of the cost being incurred and was misled by monthly invoices that made me believe I would make budget with the construction. Mr. Naville presented us with the 11% overage on the day we moved in without warning, which was just under the 15% builders are allowed by convention. Again without warning. Even with that overage, he still placed grossly inadequate critical components into our home, which required replacement at great expense after only five years. His company website has positive testimonials. Our experience was very different.
