My air conditioner initially started having problems in May 2018. I have a Homebuyer’s Warranty through 2-10, so I contacted them to have it fixed. The only A/C company they are contracted with in this area is EL Walters, so they had them come out. They repaired it. The AC started having problems again in July of 2020. I contacted 2-10 in late August and they approved replacing the system. Again, they used EL Walters. The new unit was installed and things seemed to be fine until July 2021. The house wasn’t cooling as well. By the end of August, it wasn’t cooling at all - less than 1 year after having a new unit installed. I contacted a different company to come out and diagnose the problem because it was 95 degrees with a heat index of 110 and there was a heat advisory. I wanted answers ASAP and I knew EL Walters was going to tell me I had to go through 2-10. The technician that did the diagnosis informed me that the furnace evaporator coil was not compatible with the AC unit that EL Walters installed and that they should have also replaced the coil. He was shocked that they did this. His comment was, “They had to know this was wrong and that this system would fail. They probably thought it would last longer than it did and then maybe it wouldn’t be their problem. You need to report this to EPA and they should be responsible for repairing it because they installed it knowing it wouldn’t last.” I contacted EL Walters to let them know the diagnosis. I explained what the technician had said and the receptionist’s response was, “Why would you have someone else come out to check our install?” I thought that response was inappropriate. I told her because it’s blistering outside, my AC isn’t working I wanted answers ASAP. She said that since I used my home warranty company, I would have to go back through them. I contacted 2-10 and they said they’d reach out to EL Walters. Two days passed and I never heard anything. I called 2-10 back and they said it would just be easier to put in a new service request. I didn’t want to do that because EL Walters is the only company the use for this type of repair in Evansville and they had botched the install of the unit. My husband ended up contacting a third heating and air company because he wanted to be sure about the diagnosis. The technician inspected the furnace and AC unit and said, “You can’t put a 410 on a 22. It will make the whole system blow up, which is what has happened here. The way your system is set up, they would’ve had to pull out your furnace to replace the coil. They probably got lazy and didn’t feel like doing that, so they just did this and hoped it lasted awhile.” I wasn’t sure what this is meant, so I looked it up. The new unit that they installed uses R410A refrigerant. The existing coil in the furnace uses R22 refrigerant. They charge at different pressures, so they are incompatible within the same system. Putting R410A into an R22 system makes the pressure too high, so the valves rupture and refrigerant leaks out. All new AC units made since 2010 cannot use R22 because of EPA regulations. Knowing that the system was much older than that, EL Walters should have known the coil would was not compatible. I’m not sure whether or not EL Walters’ technicians installed this incorrectly out of careless negligence or lack of knowledge. Either way, we did not feel comfortable having them come out to “repair” anything else, so we bypassed the home warranty company and paid out of pocket for the other heating and air company to install a new coil and recharge the system. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I know this is a long review, but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I think it is despicable that a company would install something incorrectly knowing that it would fail, be offended that you had someone else check their poor work, and then not even own up to the mistake when there is clear evidence of it. I ended up having to pay $2200 to correct their improper installation.

Home Buyer’s Warranty needs to be contacted to set up a work order in order for the service call to be covered by them, per their procedures. We had installed the equipment supplied by the warranty company almost a year ago. In many instances, the existing evaporator coil can be used with the new refrigerant by changing the TXV or piston. Apparently, we had gotten some incorrect information from the Carrier distributor. We were expecting a new work order from Home Buyer’s Warranty, but did not receive one. Home Buyer’s Warranty uses several contractors in the area, so we assumed they had dispatched this call to another contractor. I contacted the warranty company and was advised a work order had been set up and then immediately cancelled. If the claim would have been set up through Home Buyer's Warranty, the warranty company would have covered the evaporator coil replacement, and we would not have charged any non-covered out-of-pocket expenses or the deductible. We do stand behind our work.

My family and I have used this company for over 10 years on both of our homes. Our newest home had a Trans unit placed by them in 2012 to replace a unit that was destroyed in a storm. We have NEVER had an issue and has ALWAYS been satisfied until it came to a high priced part needing to be replaced on the outside unit. We have asked for the same repairman because he was excellent in ever aspect. But when it came down to not having a working unit, that is when professionalism changed. Waited through the weekend at the companies request so that we wouldn't be charged so much for a repair call so come Monday we waited all day. At 2 p.m., got tired of waiting after speaking to two different people including one that said "you didn't register your unit" I contacted Trane. They put me through to EL Walters on their line and was told by a different person that they in fact are the ones who file the registration for the unit. Several stories later it came down to, 1. They registered the unit under the wrong name and address ( lane not street) 2. They tried to tell us that they had never been out here before and looked at our outside unit even though they were in 2016 for the same reason as this year ( freezing lines to the inside unit) and 3. They are saying that what the tech told us was not correct so it doesn't count but would not let us speak or be on the call when they spoke to him. And to add to it all I ask to whom I was speaking to all he said was "Dennis" owner of the company, which is not correct. They refuse to provide us with any information on our warranty just keep telling us it doesn't qualify but it will be 1200.00 not including service and labor.

The technician was professional, explained the process, taught us how to prevent further problems, and cleaned up after himself. I am very pleased with this service. We have had no further problems with this unit, and we plan to get on the maintenance program he offered.

Description of Work: I have lived in two very old homes, and had issues with three different furnaces and two air conditioning units. They always come when my heat goes out. As a single mom with a school age child, its great to know we will always be warm in our home. When my older furnace was going to cost 6 to 700 for a repair, the repairman went out of his way to suggest a new furnace and made arrangements for monthly payments. The workers are always considerate and paitient, having no heat and not knowing what it might cost and worrying about paying for the service are still a big deal, but I know when I call them that WE will make it through.

Description of Work: The blower on my unit went out and I called them to take a look. It took forever for them to arrive, and when they did, they just gave it a cursory look, told me it would be $1500 to fix, and then charged me $60 for the "courtesy." I called someone else who actually took the time to troubleshoot and diagnose the problem before fixing it for less than half of the EL Walters quote.

We just purchased an older home and we have been renovating it. We have used them faithfully for nearly 20 years. When one of his technicians came in and put in a new condenser and plugged it in and blew it up, Mr. Walters was right behind him with a brand new one at no charge. He will come 24 hours a day.

Description of Work: i have to use this company throught my home buyers warranty company. It only cost me a certain amount so i cant give a fair grade on pricing. I can say their quality and punchuality is not very good. althought they are limited by how much they can do, due to the warranty company, they still have had to come back to our ac 6 different times last summer. also another 3 times this summer thus far.They are never on time and are always giving the excuse of communication errors within their staff. my wife has to use them at their work as well and says they are the same way at her work. My wife and I would not recommend E.L. Walters to anyone.

We are sorry for the bad experience you had. Looked in to this and we had to return 2 to 3 times not 6. Some of this was because of the warranty company procedures we have to follow in these cases. We did have to return the next year a couple times, but this is to be expected with equipment as old as yours. The warranty company you have your warranty with makes us take the cheapest route on repairs. This not something we would do if we did not have to. I hope in the future when your warranty runs out you will try us again. I will be glad to give you an hour of free service to help make up for the problems you had.
