Let me start by saying that the quote that I got from the Woodshop was the most expensive for the project of remodeling my kitchen, but because the Woodshop had a good reputation based on reviews on Angie’ List, Houzz.com, and word of mouth I made the decision to contract with them for the job. I can’t begin to explain how disappointed I am with the whole experience. In an effort to keep this from becoming too long I will highlight the main areas of concern below: - There were things that I was told prior to signing the contract which ended up being untrue or not honored by the Woodshop, The items were not important to the completion of the job but I feel it is worth mentioning. - There was a definite lack of communication from the Woodshop on important issues such as scheduling, project delays, and problem resolution. - There was also a lack of communication within the Woodshop. There were instances in which staff was not aware of important project details, which in some cases affected materials ordering. In addition, there were scheduling issues that resulted from the lack of communication within the company. - The design for the kitchen contained a flaw in the spacing of the cabinets that would not allow for the dishwasher door to open fully. It would open about two-thirds of the way and then come to rest on the side of the pantry cabinet. I was told it was because the unusual size of the dishwasher door (it’s a GE Profile). This was corrected by cutting back the pantry so now the door opens, but that caused other issues because the counter top installation was meant to be flush with the Pantry… - The cut outs for the built in dishwasher and refrigerator are extremely tight. So tight that dishwasher hose was causing the dishwasher to be installed at an angle and the appliance installer had to replace the rubber insulation with a much thinner version so that the door would close properly. At one point the pressure from the refrigerator actually caused the side panel of the built in to detach leaving a gap in the cabinetry above the fridge and the side panel. I want to note hear that all appliance measurements were given to them months in advance. When I questioned the sizing of the built in I was told that the built-ins are designed to standard sizes, not to the fit of my appliances specifically. This makes me wonder why they needed the specs to the appliances that I purchased? - The finishes were rushed and sloppy. It took several return visits from the woodshop and I still had to hire another contractor to cleanup some of the sloppy work that was done. - To this point there has been a lack of follow up and concern from The Woodshop. There are still issues that I am working to resolve and I am beginning to believe that I am going to have to pay another contractor to complete. This really is just a summary of the bigger pain points experienced with this kitchen remodel. To be fair, my kitchen looks good, some things were done really well. It took some time, but my kitchen functions properly with only minor flaws, but it was a definite struggle to get to this point. One last note; The owner of The Woodshop can be very convincing when he is standing in your partially functioning kitchen asking for final payment. I would recommend that you hold off until you are completely satisfied with the work. My husband and I didn’t.

We were very pleased with the work done and have had no problems in the years that followed. As with all remodeling, it is a real pain to have workers in and out of your house and they did the best that they could. They kept the place clean each day. Any issues that came up were quickly resolved. I wished that the jobs had been completed quicker as there were a couple of delays but they were unavoidable and just part of the remodeling process. We only had one real area where something came up that was not included in the original bid but this was clearly outside the bid and was resolved quickly and for a reasonable cost.
Description of Work: Woodshop made an addition to the house which included an extra bay on the garage and a room above part of the older garage section including rewiring of the garage and electrical sub panel. It also included all finishing work. As a separate job and not included in the previous, a couple of years earlier, they also did a remodel of our kitchen to the bare walls, a bathroom remodel also to the bare walls and replacement of the front door. All of the work was done completely and to our satisfaction. While the price that was quoted seemed high at start, they materials they used were all high quality and the allowances for such things as floors, trim, cabinet hardware and plumbing were all adequate to get high quality materials.

WOODSHOP, INC was great to work with and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: We had an old ceramic floor replaced with new ceramic, new stained wood molding, new vanity and vanity top of same size as the original and had the one piece acrylic bathtub/shower painted. The bathtub was in new condition to begin with. It looks beautiful now. They replaced the exhaust fan with a more quiet unit that has more cfm. They installed a new shower head and installed a new bathtub renovation kit to update the look. This way, they didn't have to replace the valve body in the wall. That would have required major work.

The job couldn't have gone better, from the moment I called to make and appointment for a quote all the way through until the job was completed. Callbacks were quick and professional. Quote was less than half the cost of the other 4 installers I had contacted. Job was finished within a week after my first call! Crown looks amazing, the two carpenters who installed it were super careful to not track snow throughout my home and I appreciated that being 8 months pregnant. I'm always nervous when we have a home projects happen, as it seems one leads to having mishaps and headaches, but I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy this was. Would definitely use them again!

They helped us with the design and then did the construction. At all times they were available and responsive to our requests given when we started the project we lived out of state. When we moved in in August 2013 we were delighted with the condition of our new home, the exactness of the detail finishing and the overall look and feel of it. When dealing with builders there is always some apprehension and this company took away any concerns we may have had, living up to every single promise they made. They also returned to do the "little jobs" that need to be done after a new home is built in a timely manner. Their staff was great to work with and the workers who built our home and returned to do the little jobs were a pleasure to work with, not to mention fully competent. |

Treated us very poorly almost as if our job was to small to merit their attention. The subs that they used performed poorly especially the tile in shower and around bathtub. Handles on cabinets do not even line-up. When we brought up an issue with the post in the bathroom acted like we were bothering them even though is was clearly not square. Hired another contractor to do a major kitchen and first floor remodel much more responsive. Do not use the Woodshop!

Response from WOODSHOP, INC
We are disappointed to see this review, especially years after our project completion. It should be noted that our in house customer satisfaction questionnaire received high marks (48 out of possible 50), with write-in comments about quality and scheduling of trades, from the same client. I am not sure what has happened since to change opinion, but we are easy to get a hold of and are in the town of Munster daily. Please contact us with any question or issue and we would be happy to stop by to take a look at things.

We really relied on the Woodshop for design and construction expertise, in addition to timely project completion, for a somewhat irregular interior window and door trim replacement project. Their work exceeded our expectations and we love spending time in our "new" home. They invested plenty of time with models, a visit to their showroom, and assistance from their designers. They helped us find ways to reduce costs by providing several cost options on each phase of the project. In the end the extra time paid off with a well-run construction phase, and, we're still satisfied over a month later.

This was a really big job! We had a two car attached garage in our 1928 vintage limestone home that we wanted converted into a master suite. We found a great architect, recommended to us by Jason Mitchell of The Woodshop. The architect, Brad Spiegel, came up with seven different designs in order to give us lots of design choices. We selected the right design for us, which included the goal of blending the new construction in with the old, to make it look original to the house. Woodshop hit it out of the park! The finished work exceeded our expectations! Their hallmark is fine attention to detail, and we got it! Every element of the finished work is incredibly beautiful. And, it absolutely looks like it was original to our 1928 home. If you are looking for a contractor who delivers on their promises, these are the guys for you!

They were awesome and receive A ratings across the board. The were very easy to work with, conscientious about budget (and actually came in under the estimate) and were willing to change plans or add things as we went along with the renovation without any difficulty. The quality of work is superb- with much attention to detail. I will absolutely use them again when the next project comes along!

The experience has been beyond what we had expected, this being our first experience in building a home. We laid out what we wanted and working with an architect came up with a good plan. The established schedule has been adhered to, the quality of the subcontractors has been superb, the assistance and responsiveness of The Woodshop staff has been excellent. They have made this whole house-building process one that exceeded our expectations. Sure, there were some changes we needed to make during the construction period, but they were as flexible as they could be and worked with us to accomplish our objectives. We are excited about our new home and feel fortunate to have used The Woodshop team who worked to make it the least stressful as it could be. Deciding to build a new home was a tough decision, but having it built by The Woodshop team certainly made it a better experience than we had anticipated... having heard horror stories of others who had a home built. The construction business has been down over the past few years and we were nervous if building a home now would be a good experience and wondered whether the builder would still be able to provide what we wanted, on time, at an acceptable price. Would there still be quality subcontractors available and staffed to perform? All that happened for us.....and we attribute most of it to the quality of The Woodshop and its staff.
Description of Work: The Woodshop staff helped us design a new home that would meet the requirements and features we indicated we wanted. Excellent people with a very understanding and flexible approach. No pushing toward what they wanted, only listening and helping us get what we wanted.

Although Woodshop prices are higher than some of the other contractors, we have found that their professionalism and attention to detail is too great to pass up. Randy and Jason (owners) and Anne (who assists with choosing materials) really listen to their customers needs. With jobs like ours there are bound to be a few snafus along the way, but they handled them well, resolving the difficulties in as promptly as possible. To be specific - the granite for our kitchen bar was cut too small (never did figure out whose error that was). The granite company did not have any more of that granite so Jason researched all over to fine something that matched. He was relatively sure that we would approve of the match, but had me drive up to confirm before shipping it down to the local company for cutting. As it turned out, the local company miscut the piece again and had to cut it a third time. Jason and Anne handled all of the difficulties and the job was finally finished (you asked for details). The carpenters and other craftsmen that work for them are expert and basically nice guys (that is important when you have people working in your home for weeks). The areas in which they were working were cleaned up as much as possible every day when they left which made it more tolerable living through major renovations. The outside companies they brought in to do specialized work were also great - they obviously only work with those who live up to their standards. We have since hired the painters they used for our jobs for additional painting in our home.
Description of Work: Woodshop has done three remodeling/addition jobs for us. The first job was remodeling and addition to our family room and addition of a main floor mud/laundry room. Even though others cautioned against veering off our initial plans with suggestions from a contractor, their suggestions were so awesome that we did so. The tray ceiling in our family room just makes the room so much better than if the ceiling was just plain. We doubled our family room size and, as stated, added on a laundry/mud room. The second job was a small remodel of our main floor 1/2 bathroom which went fine. The third job was another big one. It was a total gut of our kitchen including opening up a wall to our living room to create a more useable space overall. The work included new flooring and overhaul of the living room with paint and flooring. It also included a new water heater and and update of our heating duct system. The previously unused living room/dining room space is now used daily.

The Woodshop provided us with an entire crew for the duration of the project. They are professional carpenters, and did an excellent job building our new deck. Upon demolition of the old deck, they found some rotten house floor joist box wood, and replaced it for me. Randy Mitchell, the owner, also provided us with his brickmason to do some tuckpointing around the house.
Description of Work: Take down and demolition of 14' x 24' deck on the back of our house, and building a new 14' x 14' deck and staircase. Minor interior work, also.
