I'd give zero stars if possible. I heard from many people that Nick's was great. Definitely not the experience we had. Shortly after the door was installed, a blemish appeared at eye level. The clear coat bubbled and pealed. Nick's admitted it was a defect, that some likely touched the door between the staining and clear coat application. Numerous phone calls, emails, broken promises followed. It was expected that I would work with their driver to remove the door, install a temporary door, and then redo the process several weeks later. I asked if Nick's would cover any damage and then crickets. Less than a year later, the weather stripping is peeling away and the door is scratching the threshold. So if you're ok paying premium price for a door that may be defective from a company that won't stand by its product, then Nick's is for you.

On May 27, 2010 I was given a $12,235.00 bid on 25 doors plus finishing by Nicks Building Supply, Inc. On June 7, 2010 I paid the ½ down payment of $6,200.00 and the balance of $6,035.00 was paid on July 7, 2010. Upon installing the doors I noticed that many of them had glue marks on them. In other words the door wasn’t completely sanded before it was finished. They came and picked them up without much of an issue and fixed the glue issue. The next issue was brought to my attention when the door handles were to be installed. Many were drilled incorrectly. The drilling for the door handle didn’t line up with the drilling on the door jamb. This made it so the door wouldn’t latch closed. When I contacted them I also informed them that almost all of the doors were starting to split. They blamed the latching issue on my installers, and said that the splitting issue was floating panels. This was completely incorrect. If they would have just looked at the pictures they would have seen it was splitting on a glued part of the door. Finally, after many attempts and me sending pictures they sent a handy man to fix the latching issue. When I say fix, they ground down the strike plate so the door would latch. Not necessarily right, but I was willing to be reasonable with them. Well then after a bunch more emails and them requesting over and over to send them pictures, they agreed that there was an issue with the doors. They said it was a warranty issue. They then changed my contact and then I had to resend pictures and start all over. They said that their warranty covers the doors, but not the finishing and that if I wanted the doors I could either finish them myself for free or it would cost me $1,090.00, including $250.00 for shipping for them to finish them. Keep in mind, I paid them for the finishing the first time, $2,218.00. This was after months of them wearing me down and I believe trying to get out of handling the issue. So I finally agreed to pay the $1,090.00 for them to finish the doors. The word “them” is very important. On their website where they pointed me to look at their warranty, it also says they finish all their doors in house. I then received a call from a man stating his company name and telling me it was regarding my replacement doors from Nicks Building Supply. He said he was calling because he needed to confirm my stain color. I asked him why Nicks Building Supply didn’t give him the color. He said because they didn’t stain them the first time it was another company. I told him I would call him back. I then went to their site and re-read their warranty and their finishing instructions. Only to find out that all of my doors weren’t finished the way that they say they needed to be. They weren’t sealed on all six sides. I believe that is why they are splitting. Since they weren’t finishing them in house I cancelled the replacement doors. This isn’t a warranty issue. The doors weren’t finished correctly the first time. Through this drama they have bounced me between 4 different people. I’ve left a message for the owner and sent him a certified letter, with no response. I have emails showing them denying blame after admitting it was an issue, saying they will get back to me that day and it taking weeks and multiple emails from me. It went on and on.
Description of Work: They provided around 25 doors. All but one of them was an interior door.

This has been a disaster. Do not use this company. I'd attach a photo if I could but the door is literally falling apart. Plus .. despite their claims it is does not meet Florida hurricane codes. We received our door, took it carefully off the truck, and our GC -- a licensed general contractor with a great reputation who has done a lot of work for us -- installed it the same day. It was well packed and a beauty. Unfortunately .. it began to fall apart within weeks of being installed! The entire door is literally falling to one side. You can see the panels splitting, from top to bottom, on the inside and the out. We called and wrote and finally decided a review, and probably a lawsuit, is the best way to deal with this company. First they told us to use a patch kit. As if a patch kit would make a difference for an entire door falling apart. Then they told us they'd send us a new panel, but that we had to pay for staining and shipping, which they said their warranty says. I don't know what their warranty says but I do know that an expensive door should not fall apart in weeks; this door had a serious manufacturing defect. Avoid this company! They're rude, they sold us a door with a defect so serious we'll likely have to purchase an entirely different one, and they don't stand behind their work. Besides that there's the fact they absolutely say that their doors meet hurricane code but, when ordering, forget to say that all doors that meet code must swing out, and happily sold us one that swings in. This company represents everything that is dangerous about purchasing building materials that are heavy, high-priced, or should they fail require expensive replacement costs. I wish that we'd just told our GC to purchase us a door from local suppliers, but their doors looked beautiful online and I liked that they sounded like a small, friendly company. I don't know if they're small, but the door they sold us is poorly built, their "warranty" may as well be non-existent (pay for a replacement part when our door fails after a month and we'll send one .. what kind of warranty is that?), and the person we spoke to was rude, belligerent, and acted exactly like you'd expect somebody who knows they ripped you off and just wants you to go away would act. Like I said, more than happy to send photos of the door, the crack, and even a printout of their webpage w/ the warranty. All this is easily verifiable.
Description of Work: Nick's builds doors and, unfortunately, we purchased one ... what was supposed to be a framed-in, beautiful sold wood door built to hurricane code for Florida, as they advertise on their website. [They note their doors doors don't comply to code in Dade County, but they're compliant everywhere else, and we don't live in Dade County.]

Response from NICK'S BUILDING SUPPLY
We are still willing to provide you with a replacement slab FREE. All you would have to pay is the shipping to you. Or save that money by picking up your door slab. Also, pay for staining of the door. Or save that cost by staining it yourself. This I can still offer you to resolve your issue here at Nicks. The replacement door slab is still FREE. Just as any other door or window company would offer you. If you needed a out-swing door for your home. How come you ordered a in-swing? If you needed a permit for the work performed on your home you should have applied for one. Only then would you have known the rules and regulations on the products you need to make the improvements with. I wish you had looked into the proper steps before starting your construction on your home.
