A previous chimney sweep had said that he could not get  enough of the creosote out of the cracked, concrete block chimney to put in a standard 6" steel liner.  Perhaps he could put in a 5 1/2" pipe.  Topeka Wood Stove said that would not be sufficient for the wood stove we wanted and suggested David Harris of Stoker's Chimney Service.  Mr. Harris said he would grind out the old creosote sufficiently to put in the 6" steel liner plus the suggested insulator around the liner.  He informed us that so much creosote was now collected in the chimney because the the upper chimney had cracked concrete blocks that were  gathering water, and cooling the smoke too soon,   He suggested coating the exterior of the chimney with a waterproofing that would improve the draw and also stop the deterioration of the concrete blocks.  He also wanted to raise the height of the chimney to code with a longer chimney cap.  His quoted price was $2400.00; the previous chimney sweep had quoted $3,000.00 for lining the stove with the smaller dimension liner and no repair to the chimney structure itself.  Mr. Harris did the work in a timely manner; the wood stove (which is included in the total price of about $6000.00) is now in place, and we are very pleased.
