We chose A Better Way Moving Company because two of my friends recently hired them and were very happy with the results. They gave a good impression when they came to give us an estimate. They were helpful advising on what items to move ourselves in order to save money - relatively expensive to pack properly to load on the truck, but easy to drive across town ourselves, such as artwork, lamps, computers. They also suggested moving the contents of our closets ourselves, which seemed odd since packing a wardrobe box is pretty simple. Maybe because wardrobe boxes are expensive? He seemed to take it in stride that we weren't totally sure which stuff we would pack/move ourselves. We mostly wanted them to move our furniture and pack/move our kitchen. We wanted to move the books from our home office ourselves, but weren't sure if we'd have time. He told us we could leave clothes in dresser drawers, but to empty pens, papers, etc. from desk drawers, since those things can fall out and get lost. The estimate included all the stuff we weren’t sure about: loading and unloading of household goods 3 people at $100 per hour for 7 hours -> $700 Fuel surcharge: $20 packing 3 people at $100 per hour for 4 hours -> $400 packing supplies ~ $300 unpacking 3 people at $100 per hour for 3 hours -> $300 Total: $1720 We were able to move our books ourselves, so we had a little less work for them to do than the quote covered. We arranged for packing up our kitchen plus other breakables on Monday, moving Tuesday, and unpacking Wednesday. We understood that the packers would arrive at 9am. They arrived at 8:20, which was a little awkward but ok. They packed up the kitchen and knick-knacks very quickly, then before leaving asked us to look around in case they missed something. We found a couple things tucked into a cabinet, and they left us a box and some packing material for those, although we didn't want them. The movers arrived on time, and checked about which things were being moved and which were not. For previous moves, I have seen movers lay down a pathway of floor protection. These guys did not, but I wasn't worried about it. In previous moves, the movers brought padded blankets into the house and wrapped most of the furniture inside, I guess to prevent damage in case they bumped into stuff. These guys kept the padded blankets on the truck and wrapped the furniture there. I didn't worry about it since maybe they were just going to be careful going around corners. They worked quickly and we mostly tried to stay out of their way. One of them tried to carry a whole full-sized bed frame out by himself. He caught my attention by bumping into walls a bit, and then pinching his hands painfully. Finally he got someone to help him carry it out the front door. It seemed like a bad choice, but no obvious consequences aside from his pain. Later, as they were still loading the truck and I was elsewhere, my husband contacted me and asked me to find some wood glue, since one of the legs had broken off a dresser that used to belong to my great-grandparents while they were moving it out. It sounded like they had suggested the wood glue. When they were unloading the dresser with the broken leg at the new house, they broke off a second leg, and then broke off a third leg on the way up the stairs. Each time they needed to stop and rest their fingers, they would set the dresser down at an angle, with all the weight on one leg, and it would snap off. I understand why it happened once. But they kept on doing the same thing, causing more damage. We did not have this problem when we moved the empty dresser into our house. After the first or the second leg broke off, we could have removed the drawers to make the dresser easier to carry and less likely to break, but they did not want to take the time. They just kept complaining about their fingers and talking about looking forward to playing video games. When they got the dresser into our bedroom, they suggested laying it on its side so that I could glue the legs back on. While they still had it upright, I asked them to let me remove the drawers first, but they were in too much of a rush to let me and just laid it down and rushed away. Then I found out how moving the treadmill had gone. When my husband and I carried it into our old house, it was kind of an unpleasant experience, since it is heavy and awkwardly shaped. But it has a pair of wheels with some kind of locking mechanism, and the belt part folds up against the console, which makes the shape a little less awkward. We were glad to hire someone stronger and more experienced to move it. As far as I knew, getting it out of the old house wasn't a big deal, but the doors are kind of narrow in our new house, and we wanted it in a room that is right at the top of the stairs, so it must have been even more awkward. My husband told me that they struggled with it for quite some time and almost gave up, before deciding to take the door off the hinges to get it through. If I had had any idea it would be that difficult, I would definitely have chosen to keep it in the garage. In their struggles, they scraped some pretty obvious gouges in the wood floors, and banged up the freshly painted door jamb pretty seriously. I later discovered similar damage to the doorway and even worse damage to the floor at the old house. It is pretty expensive to properly repair deep scrapes in a wood floor, so it would have made a huge difference if they had either used floor protection or handled the treadmill above the floor. Sliding it on the floor may have been necessary due to the awkward angles at the new house, but I know from experience that it is not necessary at the old house. This is another situation where it is easy to understand that they might scratch the floor when moving the treadmill out, and realize that they need to take more precautions when carrying it into the next house, but they seemed too much in a hurry to make this kind of adjustment. Also bumping into doorways is normal, but they spent a totally abnormal amount of time trying to force the treadmill through a narrow doorway before making the adjustment of taking the door off, and did a lot more damage than necessary as a result. In our previous move, we went to a lot of effort to number our boxes and make sure we were getting back the same number of boxes that we sent out. The moving company also had numbered stickers for our boxes, and kept track to make sure each one was delivered. Of course, in that case we knew our stuff was being loaded onto one truck, then moved to a different truck with other households full of stuff, over several days, so there would be lots of opportunities for mixups. In this case, the truck arrived empty, they loaded the stuff onto it, drove it across town, and unloaded it, so we didn't worry about keeping a careful inventory of boxes. Having all our kitchen stuff get unpacked was fantastic. One guy came on Wednesday, worked quickly, unpacked everything, put some stuff where it belonged if it was totally obvious, but mostly left it out for us to sort out, and then he took away all the packing materials. He apologized that one of the wine glasses didn't survive. I guess that is to be expected. With all the clutter, it took us a while to realize our favorite salad bowl was missing, as was a plastic container. We carefully examined every nook and cranny in both kitchens repeatedly and have not found them. A large salad bowl doesn't disappear easily, so I guess maybe a whole box somehow didn't make it off the truck? Maybe there were a few other things in that box that we just don't realize are missing, since we don't have a perfect inventory of our plastic containers? Ultimately, we were charged $400 for 4 hours of labor by the team of 3 packers and the team of 3 movers, plus $75 for unpacking, $20 fuel surcharge, and $368 for packing supplies. I realize that they ended up packing and moving somewhat less than our quote accounted for, and maybe that was an unwelcome surprise. But I would have happily paid them more to take their time and not damage my furniture, walls, and floor. Every time I walked by the scratches in the floor and the dents in the door jamb, I was really frustrated. I'm not good at furniture repair, and I wasn't really happy with how my glue job turned out, and I realized it would have been better to get someone more experienced to glue the legs back on. I worked up the courage to call the company to let them know I was unhappy with how rushed the movers were and how much damage they had done. The guy I talked to seemed to take my concerns very seriously, and offered to send a guy to look at what it would take to repair the damage to the walls, floors, and dresser drawer legs. The guy who came to look at it seemed pretty attentive to detail and seemed to take the issues seriously, but there seemed to be some uncertainty about how much it would make sense to do. He reported back to his boss, who called me to let me know he would send someone out to do the floor and door jamb repairs, and someone else to pick up the dresser and bring it somewhere for repairs. So in the end, they did a little sanding on the floor in the new house and painted over the damage of the door jamb, but the paint job is pretty sloppy and it's not clear what benefit there was on the floors, and as far as I can tell the dresser is pretty much the same as it was when I was done gluing the legs back on. It will cost $100 to replace the salad bowl that vanished, and we only have 7 wine glasses instead of the 8 we started with. I'm just glad to be done with this experience and I now realize how much I should have appreciated the stellar job our previous movers did when we moved across the country.

WORST Experience EVER!!! A Better Way Moving and Storage was hired to pack and move our household across several states. This was to be a shared move so the price was very good. Our belongings went in to storage until our move date and a partner move could be arranged. When our belongings were delivered 32 items of 150 were not among them and managements claims after two months they cannot find them. Upon unpacking we discovered an overabundance of packing material was used which padded the bill. Unfortunately, the protection of our possessions was not their priority and many items arrived damaged, some were just parts and sticks, see photos. When I called I always got attitude and was told on several occasions “What do you want? I’m BUSY!”. When I e-mailed I never received acknowledgement or contact from A Better Way Moving and Storage. We haven't seen any financial restitution and they have told untruths to their insurance company. These people only want your money and don’t care one iota about you or your possessions. HEED THIS WARNING and save yourself A LOT of PAIN.

The first thing the delivery men did when they showed up was to ask for extra money because there was a small piece of furniture in the installation area. This is despite the fact that the furniture company that we bought the rug from was crystal clear with them that the payment INCLUDES moving furniture and placing it back on the rug. Even if there was some misunderstanding between them and the furniture store (which I highly doubt), I had actually already cleared the installation area (to clean the floor where the rug was going to go), and the only thing that they could have possibly needed to move was a very small table which only had to be moved two or three feet. Asking for more money for something that should be no effort at all for a grown man is just plain greedy, dishonest, and unprofessional. After I cleared the table for them, the three men struggled valiantly for about ten minutes to tear open the plastic packaging that the rug and pad were secured in. I hope they used the money I paid them to buy a pair of scissors.

A Better Way moved our daughter to an apartment in Bloomington in August, and we were happy with the price and how smoothly the move went, so when my sister and her husband needed to move from one apartment to another apartment in Greenwood, I called A Better Way to book it. Even though they had to drive to Greenwood from Bloomington and back, they were able to accomplish the move at a more reasonable cost than when I had 2 Guys & a Truck move my sister 6 years ago - and they were a local mover! Dustin, Rob and Nate were the moving men both times. In both cases the over-the-phone estimate was accurate, so I was pleasantly surprised when the final bill was presented to me. The estimator, and then Dustin on-site, explained the rates and charges before work commenced. The three men worked diligently, were polite, notified me immediately of any issues with the furniture before they moved it to the truck (some of the furniture items were already pretty rickety), and the move went smoothly. It is important to mention in a moving review how well the movers are able to calm down nervous customers like me. Moving is nerve-wracking and there are always worries that things will go wrong. A Better Way put me at ease and assured me they would take care of everything - and they did!

We were very pleased with the service from both ends. First a man came out and made an estimate that was much cheaper than another company that had been recommended. He was very polite and courteous. We did the packing ourselves so I also dropped by their facility to pick up some boxes and to talk about some of my son's furniture to be dropped off at his Louisville address. I was again impressed by the clean facility and employees who were cheerful and very helpful. On moving day they showed up right on time and the only hitch was they left a couple of shelf boards behind but when I called the driver they drove back to pick them up. Their communication was very good so I was able to help work out some delivery issues and my Mom and brother were also very happy with the delivery. All the movers were exceptionally polite and the furniture arrived in good condition.

There were three guys working together: Marty, Josh, and Roy and they knew they would be followed throughout the house by the ex-husband as they put things in the truck. They did a fantastic job and were very polite and sensitive in getting things out carefully and quickly and making sure non of his things were broken as he watched everything they did. They worked in hot weather and and made sure all the items got into the right places in the new house and nothing got forgotten or misplaced when taken out. I was extremely pleased with how nice and friendly they were when they were working hard the whole day. Very grateful.

In the last 37 years, we have made 8 moves, all done by professional moving companies. This move was the only one that was a total nightmare from start to finish. Our Bloomington home sold very quickly and we had to rent a town home for 14 months before our planned move to South Carolina. We got estimates for both moving and storage from multiple companies and the price and promised services offered by A Better Way Moving and Storage was very competitive. We decided to use their services after we were assured that our furniture and household goods would be stored in a climate controlled environment and would be insured during the time they kept our belongings in storage. Thus began our nightmare. First, the packers sent to our home were the least professional of any we had ever experienced. Many things that had always been boxed or crated in previous moves (such as a delicate 5 ft. tall silk flower arrangement, various lamp shades, and stone table tops) were just thrown on the truck without being packed at all, even though I repeatedly expressed my concerns. A computer desk (already had slight damage) was totally destroyed and had to be thrown away after it was dropped when being carried to the truck. Glass panels for a table were broken and had to be replaced. Lamps were broken (they were not packed either). The glass on a TV screen was badly scratched. And this was just during the first move (either to storage or the town home). For the next 14 months, we paid $325.00 to have our belongings stored in a climate controlled environment. Then our house in SC was finally finished and we were ready to complete the move. On the day of our scheduled move at the arranged time, no truck showed up. We waited and waited. Finally the driver called to tell us that he had been delayed and would be arriving around noon. He arrived, but the guys he had hired from a local moving company to help him unload did not. Again we had to wait. Finally the guys did show up and the unloading began. It didn't take long for a sick feeling to overcome us. Most of the furnishings that came out of storage (supposedly in a climate controlled environment) were covered with green mold. Items such as clothing and bedding that had been packed in boxes were also very damp, moldy, and smelled horrible. I washed load after load, but ended up having to throw some things away because I could not get the musty odor out. The headboard, footboard, and a night stand of our master bedroom cherry Louis Philippe furniture came off the truck badly scratched and dented (the headboard was beyond repair). Again, lamp shades were destroyed. The two glass shelves for my dining room china hutch were nowhere to be found (and still aren't two months later). A Queen Anne chair for the living room was not on the truck (it was later found and returned to us). Boxes were totally mislabeled, so unpacking was a disaster. The silk flower arrangement (which I had asked to have packed) was crushed and I cannot get the flowers to look normal again. I could go on and on, but hopefully, you get the picture by now. The guys unloading the truck had been hired from the local office of a national moving company. They were laughing the whole time they were unloading about the unprofessional way the truck had been loaded and the way things had been put on the truck without any protection. One guy told me that he'd never seen anything like the way our household goods had been treated in his 20 years of working for a moving company. The their laughter gave way to sympathy as time went on and they kept bringing things off the truck that were damaged or covered with mold. I was in tears by the time the truck was fully unloaded. Then to add insult to injury, the driver asked me to pay for the delivery of our household goods on the spot, and "oh, by the way, I cannot take a check." I had only been paying for storage with this company for 14 months with a personal check each month and had never, ever missed a payment, so this was most insulting. In the process of completing the paperwork for the driver, after giving him my credit card so he would leave me to my misery, he had me initial in several places, telling me that I was just initialing to indicate he had delivered our belongings. As I could not read through my tears, I actually initialed a place indicating that I would accept $.60 per pound for anything damaged, destroyed or lost. We ended up getting about $360.00 from A Better Way's insurance company to cover the damaged, lost, and destroyed items, and out of the goodness of their hearts, A Better Way gave us another $300.00 for our trouble. How generous. My advice to anyone considering using this moving company is to run away as fast as you can! The few dollars you save in initial costs will be spent (along with much, much more) in repair and replacement costs, not to mention laundry and cleaning costs. And it certainly won't cover the anguish of seeing damage to precious belongings (some of ours had been moved up to 7 times previously without any problem). In my opinion the company would be more aptly named if it were called "The Worst Way Moving and Storage."

This move was very professionally done! My furnishings were inspected by 2 representatives of ABWM&S and a very accurate estimate was provided later. I requested a partial pack with this move and it was provided and accomplished the day before the movers arrived. The packers were courteous, polite and very professional in the performance of their tasks. No damage was en countered as result of their work. The movers arrived the next day and they also performed in lock step with their co-workers. They delivered my furniture in excellent shape, a little late, but I was informed and continually updated on their arrival time. They off-loaded the furniture and reassembled and set-up what was required and all furniture was placed exactly where I requested. I very highly recommend this company.

I had an issue with the U-Haul so had to delay the guys from showing up. Once resolved the issue with the truck i called and they were there within 30 minutes. The 2 young men who showed up were very professional and polite. They loaded the truck very efficiently making sure that materials did not shift and that all space was used. No issues with damage at all. They were very cautious while making quick work of the loading. No loafing, never felt like they were trying to take longer than necessary to get more money from me. This move went extremely well. The truck showed up exactly on time, all three gentlemen were very professional and friendly. They spent 3 hours loading the truck and took care to make sure everything was protected. Delivery was a little delayed (only by a couple hours) but the driver stayed in contact with us so we knew exactly when to expect them. Driver and helper were, again, both very friendly and professional while unloading the truck. Total cost was below original estimate. The whole process was effortless - from booking the appointment to communication with the office and the two movers (on the day of the move) through completion of the move. The movers were on time and worked very efficiently. They were friendly, professional, and careful with our belongings. The move required taking some things to our home and delivering the rest of the items to a storage unit. It worked out very well in - and in under 3 hours. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to others or to use their services again myself.

The packers came to pack up my stuff on a Saturday. The 3 women who did that job arrived exactly on time. They worked hard and were pretty fast, considering how much I had to pack. I had organized a lot of my stuff before they came, which helped a lot; I had gone through every closet, drawer, and cabinet and cleaned out the stuff I didn't want to move. So the packers were able to work independently, without having to ask a lot of questions. I have 2 cats who are strictly indoor cats, and the packers were careful to keep them inside. All in all they did a great job, and nothing broke during the move. The movers came the following Monday to move everything to my new home. They were a bit late, but said that it was because they stopped to get gas in the van (they deducted that time from the eventual total). They were also quite efficient and relatively fast, with everything except the piano. That took them a long time, and caused some swearing and bickering among the movers, which made me a little uncomfortable. When we arrived at my new place, the movers didn't always get the boxes (which the packers had carefully labelled) into the correct rooms. For example, the kitchen boxes didn't always find their way to the kitchen. which meant I had to relocate them myself--a difficult task given the weight of many of the boxes. But overall I was pleased with the service: the estimate was quite accurate, and the work was done quickly and efficiently. I'd definitely use them again.
Description of Work: They packed up and moved my belongings and furniture to my new home.

Arrived about 35 minutes after scheduled time but that was OK. They called to let me know they were just finishing another job and would be late. They walked in the door ready to work. Everything was moved with care and they kept asking if there was anything else I needed moved. Extremely polite and movers who knew their business. Thank you Frank and Nick. I will definitely call this company again.
Description of Work: Moved furniture from one floor to another.

They were on time on a Saturday morning....and when they showed up it "was ON"....they were caring about the proper handling of my possessions to include many 50lb chunks of raw clay, my kick wheel (prob 200lb at least) and my many boxes of china! They were professional and I was sooooo grateful for their attitudes...they never once made me feel like they were too tired from being overworked...never whining about disgruntlement s with the company or other customers....Haven't seen this sort of professionalism in a long time!!!! They never seemed to be short on patience with me or my husband when some of the items needed to be taken to another location in the new house. Nothing was broken (and I am 75% out of the boxes!) Everyone one of the men were cheerful, and very gracious. My husband and I got pizza and pop for them and they didn't "lolly-gag" about--- they ate and rested a moment and went right back to unloading our items. They came in a bit under budget---and it was a BARGAIN!! Just a tip to Angie List Folk----By lunch and Tip these guys! THEY bust their rear ends and deserve ANYTHING a customer does for them....they are truly nice guys. I have a hard time getting out of the grocery store without hearing the cashier's woes.....these guys never once gave me a sob story---in fact they barked at me once or twice for picking up a box to help!....they are hard working men and deserve any "Gratuity" you give them!!!!! I would hire these fellas in a heart beat!!!! Hoping not to though for many years!
Description of Work: Where to begin? Saturday Morning 0800 Two giant trucks pull up with 7 MEN! Both truck empty and pulling away from the new house---after a stop at the storage unit along the way----and the men had us in the new home and pulled out of the driveway at 245pm! They worked so hard----took lil' breaks here and there-- but the only real break was lunch....they had the BEST attitudes for Customer Service I have encountered in a long time---Not ONE of the Men ever complained about the work they do---they had cheery dispositions and were very patient and gracious---both houses had stairs, and garages....these fellas did a STELLAR job!

They showed up on time, were friendly, courteous, and careful with my belongings. The price was reasonable, too.
Description of Work: Moved me from a 500 sq ft upstairs apartment to a new log cabin about a mile away.

Had a great experience with A Better Way Moving & Storage. They came to our apartment in April for an in-home quote for our May move. We completed our move last week and couldn't have been happier with the experience. The movers arrived on time and got right to work. Our quote was for two movers, but they actually sent us three. Although the hourly rate was higher for the extra mover, the move went quicker than anticipated and our total cost came in $15 lower than our quote. All three movers were hard workers that did not rest on the job, did not smoke at either of our residences, and were also very friendly to interact with. Would not hesitate to use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: We used A Better Way for our move from Bloomington to Greenwood, IN.
