I had been using Illiana for regular maintenance on my heating and cooling systems. In December, during a regular inspection of my furnace, they determined I had a cracked heat exchanger on my over-20-year-old furnace. The next day, I went through the options with Dan, the sales representative, and selected a furnace system (I also elected to have a new air conditioner put in as well, since I wanted to upgrade both systems). Unfortunately, over the next day or so, my furnace would periodically stop working, due to the fact that the safety switch and the furnace door were no longer in sync. I called Illiana on a Saturday morning, which happened to be one of the first big snows of the year. They came right out despite the nasty weather and made the fix for no charge to get me through until my appointment for the furnace installation. The furnace installation was relatively quick and went through without a hitch. Jeff, the technician, showed me the system once installation was completed and left no sign he had ever been there, other than the brand new furnace. As promised, Illiana called early in the spring to set up an appointment for a/c install. Again, this was a quick process, although the company had to return to charge up the a/c, since it was a bit chilly on my install date to do so. The charging took longer than anticipated, because the thermostat and a/c were not compatible. Jeff worked patiently through the problem and installed a new thermostat, without charge. I have been very happy with the service I received and the performance of my systems thus far. The price was fair, and the company has been very pleasant to work with. Also, the company extended my maintenance agreement to include an additional 6 months of service since I had purchased the two new systems. Most companies would not have recognized that my regular winter service appointment wasn't actually completed, so I appreciate that.

They were prompt for the appointment and explained everything well to me. The installation went well and it seems to be working fine. Scheduling went perfect and I was able to get in earlier than anticipated. One technician came to install the new system and it took 3 hours to complete the work. They were able to applied some discounts for me so I was happy with the deal I received.

I contacted this company to perform air duct and furnace cleaning services, based on their Angie's List reviews. Although their office staff was nice enough, I will not be patronizing them again. My house was the first house scheduled for air duct and furnace-cleaning on a Monday morning. Despite that, the technician showed up nearly 90 minutes late. (I don't care how good of a job you do; if you don't respect my time, you will not be getting my business.) When he finally did arrive, he did an okay job cleaning the ducts, but took nearly five hours to do so, even though I had removed every register, and his access to each vent should have been very easy to negotiate. Also, I'm not sure that he sprayed the anti-microbial that the company describes in its online videos. The tech nearly left without cleaning the furnace, even though it was very clear from my emails and conversations with the Illiana office staff that we were paying for that service. Upon opening the front of the furnace, he said he notice several cracks in the firewall, and immediately condemned it, saying he had to turn it off and that we should not run it. Despite that, I was charged the full amount for the furnace cleaning. Let me repeat: the tech charged me for cleaning an appliance he said I could not use. I had some other HVAC companies examine the furnace later on, and while they agreed there was a lot of wear & tear on the furnace, it was not clear that it could not be operated. They also remarked that it not appear to be cleaned very well, if at all.

First let me apologize for the delay in posting this response, the email notifying me was caught by a spam filter so I didn't notice this until we just received another review. That being said, I do apologize that you had a less than positive experience with Illiana. I do admit that we were late for your appointment, but it was an hour, not 90 minutes, and we called to let you know as soon as the technician alerted us that he was running behind and caught in traffic. While it is unfortunate that it happened that way it is not because we do not respect your time, it is simply something that happens occassionally and we do our best to deal with it when it does occur. You seem to indicate that we should have taken less time performing the cleaning. My response to that would be that you have a large number of duct openings - 27 according to my records - and in the 4 hours that were spent cleaning them that works out to between 6 and 7 an hour, or about 10 minutes each. That also includes cleaning the main supply and return trunks and treating the system with Biocide. I'm sure the day didn't start off on the right foot with us being late, and you may have though it should take less time, but I don't know that we would be able to maintain the same level of quality that we demand from our technicians if we had done it any quicker. We strive to perform a comprehensive and thorough duct cleaning and that is something that takes time. We appreciate your help by moving furniture and making sure the registers were clear - we have had jobs with half as many openings take twice as long because those things were not done prior to our arrival. Regarding the Biocide (anti-microbial) I can't be certain the technician treated the system as I wasn't there to witness it, but as you said, it is part of the included work. If you are unsure and would like to be certain, we are more than willing to send back another technician to treat the system again at no cost. Finally, regarding the furnace. I am not sure why the technician nearly forgot to do the cleaning, it is very clearly detailed in the dispatch, but I'm glad you caught it before we left the house. As far as the crack in your heat exchanger, I am confident that the technician did find a crack. We perform a safety check as part of every precision tune-up and furnace trouble call. One of the components of that safety check is inspecting the heat exchanger for cracks. We try to do the heat exchanger inspection early on in the process because finding a cracked heat exchanger demands action on the part of both us and the homeowner. We believe that a cracked heat exchanger needs to be replaced or the furnace needs to be replaced before it can be safely operated again. So, our technician found a crack in your heat exchanger, he informed you of his findings, and he shut down the furnace. That is the procedure that we follow for safety and liability reasons. If you chose to run the system after that time and other companies said it was safe to run, that is your choice and their opinion, not ours. As far as the furnace not being cleaned, no, it wasn't. If you had elected to replace the furnace instead of replacing the heat exchanger, it would have been a waste of time to clean a furnace that was going to be replaced. If we had replaced the heat exchanger we would have completed the cleaning at that time as well. If you would like, I would be more than willing to refund the difference between a furnace cleaning and a diagnostic charge as all we did was diagnose the cracked heat exchanger instead of cleaning the furnace as you indicated. While I sincerely apologize that we were late in the morning, I firmly believe that we are doing our best to be a quality company with the utmost integrity. Everything from calling you the minute we knew we would be late to taking our time to do a quality job on the duct cleaning to informing you of a potentially dangerous situation with your admittedly old furnace - all of it is to do our best to give you qualtiy professional service that you can trust. only service actually performed was check of the A/C, identifiication of some type of incompatability between the A/C and furnace. i would not use them again to either buy or maintain a system because i expect a tech to be willing and able to explain what they are doing and i was left with the impression of dishonesty when i was contacted for an estimate that i never requested

I apologize that you had a negative experience with Illiana Heating. I would like to take this opportunity to explain the situation to both you and anyone else reading this reply. I tried to contact you with regards to this situation back in September, when we received a very poor rating from you on our customer satisfaction survey. At that time you did not return my phone calls and I had no other way of contacting you besides writing a letter. I will send you a copy of this reply in the mail so that you can better understand the situation and hopefully change your opinion of Illiana Heating. On 7/20/2011 you called our company to schedule a clean and check of your air conditioning unit. At that time, our customer service representative explained to your our Goldstar maintenance program, which you indicated you though was "reasonable" (which it is) but at the same time indicated that you were "immediatelyl offered" as though it was a bad thing. Is our company trying to sell you services - yes - that is why we are in business. Were you being forced to do something with a hard sell? No, the CSR was trying to offer you the best deal for the services you were interested in and left it up to you whether or not you wanted to take advantage of it. With regards to the service call itself: The technician arrived at your home to perform a clean and check of your air conditioning system. After cleaning the outside unit he checked the refrigerant charge, a stadard part of any complete system check. One of the values that is checked during this procedure is something called superheat (abrieviated SH). Superheat is the degrees of temperature of the refrigerant above the saturation temperature after it leaves the evaporator coil (the coil that is inside your home, above your furnace). Having superheat is important because it means that the refrigerant is completely vapor when it returns to the compressor as opposed to being a liquid/vapor mixture like it could be at the saturation temperature. Essentially, you need to have a few degrees of superheat at the very least to ensure that only vapor is returning to the compressor instead of liquid because liquid refrigerant will ruin a compressor in pretty short order. With that explained, I can move on to explain what our technician found with your system. When checking your refrigerant charge and line temperature he discovered that you didn't have any degrees of superheat superheat. He attempted to adjust the charge in order to achieve superheat without any results. Let me explain that the technician at your home was relatively new in the industry. He may not have been able to explain the finer points of what was going on with your system to your satisfaction; however, that doesn't make him dishonest, just inexperienced. In addition, recognizing his lack of complete understanding in this area, he called and spoke to me regarding the situation. I asked him what he had tried and about the system configuration and he explained that you have a very mismatched system - a 2 year old furnace, 16 year old air conditioner, and 30 year old evaporator coil. It was my feeling that your very old evaporator coil was the source of the performance issues with your system and should be replaced. At that time, the case was turned over to our comfort consultant, who tried to contact you with regard to replacing your very old coil (that should have been replaced with the air conditioner) in order to improve your system performance and prolong the life of your air conditioner. At no time did we try to be dishonest with you, in fact, we were trying to do what we felt was best for your situation in order to keep your total cost of ownership as low as possible. Replacing your coil so that we could achieve superheat or replacing your entire air conditioning system would have been entirely justified considering the age and its measured performance and it would be irresponsible of us not to make you aware of what we had found. I'm sorry that you felt that calling you about replacing some of your equipment was a violation of your trust in some way, but it sounds from your description that we were never able to actually speak to you with regards to the situation in order to explain what was found and why we recommended what we did be done. Instead you have chosen to give us poor ratings wherever you can and not returned any of our phone calls, either at the time of service and days following (when you were told we would be calling) or in September when I tried to call about the poor (30/100) Customer Satisfaction Survey. The reason I would like to speak to you is so you we can have an opportunity to reearn your trust. I realize you don't get a second chance to make a first impression, but I am hopeful that a second impression can serve to overcome your first impression. What I would like to do is one of two things. I would most like to send another, more experienced technician to your home, free of charge, in the Spring when the weather will once again allow running and servicing your air conditioning system. I would like to confirm whether or not there is in fact a problem with your system. I recognize it is possible there was misdiagnosis in July, but it is also very possible that your equipment is causing damage to itself in the current configuration and costing you more than you need to spend on utility bills. The other option would be to give you back everything you have spent with us. If you're not satisfied with our service, I don't want you to pay for it. You've obviously had a bad experience, and I once again apologize for that. However, you haven't allowed us the opportunity to communicate with you regarding that experience. So, if you would like a full refund, I would like a chance to talk with you. We really do want to do the right thing, and honestly and integrity are at the top of our list of values. Please, give us another chance to make a positive impression with you. I won't ask you to retake our customer satisfaction survey or somehow modify this review, even though they do impact us negatively. The reality is that you had a bad experience and I'll take responsibility for that. i just want the chance to make it right in your mind. We decided to replace an old but working heating and air conditioning system to take advantage of the federal tax credits. We received four bids for the work and Illiana was on the higher side of the four bids but not the most expensive. The sales rep came out to our house, evaluated the project and took measurements. He explained the different options and gave us a good, better and best alternative. He also explained the tax credits and helped us understand what we needed to qualify. We received his bid by email within a couple of days. We spoke several times as we navigated through all the estimates. We decided to go with Illiana as they had the best mixture of quality product, flexibility and reasonable price. They also had the best guarantee. I left for work on installation day early in the morning and the workers arrived promptly at 8:00 AM. When i returned home in the afternoon, they had completed the job including replacing the hot water heater. I was amazed that they did not leave any mess. In fact, if it wasn't for the new equipment, you wouldn't have known that they were there working. I also appreciated the nice install job that they did in that they tied off all the wires and did a thorough job of caulking the openings. The whole process from estimate to install was just completely painless. They were very easy to work with and we are completely satisfied. We now have been through all four seasons with the new furnace and air conditioner and haven't had one issue with them. We are seeing the savings that they had estimated in our electric and gas bill. The units are very quiet, easy to operate and haven't given us one problem. We are completely satisfied with their work and would not hesitate to recommend them.

On behalf of Illiana Heating I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced. I checked our records and show that you spoke with our after-hours answering service at 6:59AM on 1/7/2011. I also show that our office called your phone at 8:30AM the same day (the office opens at 8AM) to try and assist you but were unable to reach you so we left a message. We never received a call back from you during the day on Friday, January 7th between the hours of 8AM and 4PM. I show no record of you speaking with the answering service at or around 6:30PM on 1/7/2011 so we had no way of knowing we had let you down so badly until I discovered this complaint. It is not unusual for customers to call our answering service, not answer the phone when we call back, and not return our messages, so we had no way of knowing you were still waiting for our service. I wish we had tried to call you back again some time during the day, but that is not our standard policy (as it would largely be a waste of time in most cases for the reasons stated above) but I wish that would have happened so you could have experienced the company that we truly are. I also wish you might have returned our call during the day on that Friday so we could have gotten your heat back and made you a customer for life. Please see above. In addition the technician was courteous, removed his shoes, cleaned up after himself, wiped down vents, and explained bill in full
Description of Work: Air duct cleaning on wall ducts including cold air returns. Ceiling vents were unable to be done due to the way they were fixed in the ceiling. The technician went to the attic to attempt a work around. Much appreciated

They were wonderful to work with. They responded right away when I called about the problem. They were very knowledgeable and told me exactly what was needed. They did the job in one day and they were very respectful and neat, cleaning everything up perfectly.
Description of Work: I hired Illiana to take care of a leak in my a-coil caused by a previous vendor. They ended up fixing the a-coil and installing a new air conditioning unit for me as well. They removed the old unit. My house is about 1400 square feet.

Illiana is great to work with. They come out on time and if I ever have a problem, they respond quickly. They do quality work and are very responsible. I trust their work. I had used other Heating & A/C companies before, but I like this one the best.
Description of Work: I have my annual maintenance contract with Illiana Heating & Plumbing, for $150 per year. They come out twice a year to check the heating and air conditioning, replacing filters as needed. They will also check my water heater for an additional $20 a year.
