They were fantastic to work. Not only were they on time, and extremely professional, they worked closely with us to identifiy the best spot to install the system both inside and out. We have a finished basement that is used daily, and placement was very important to us. While the install takes 4-5 hours, he was very courteous and professional. Once completed, everything was cleaned completly, and he gave us a thurough walk through of the new system. I would highly recommend them.

The technician arrived exactly on time. He put down tarps over my rug so as not to get it dirty. He installed the radon mitigation system exactly as it was described to me when I signed the contract for the job. He left my basement looking exactly as he found it (in other words, he was very neat). I was pleased because the pipe going up to the roofline is right next to a gutter in the corner so it does not look bad.

The first phase went well and I was pleased with the workmanship. The radon test still came back at an elevated level and I had contracted with this company to perform phase 2 which involved installing a sub membrane soil gas control system in the crawl space area of my basement. The workman came but told the new home owner (I was selling the house and radon mitigation was required in the sale agreement) that he couldn't do the work that day. There was no further contact from the company and they just walked away from the job and a signed contract to do the work. I did not hear from them and finally called Radon Environmental and spoke with Mike Brinneman who told me that the crawl space was not accessible and had too much debris to do the job. He had no explanation for why there was no effort on his part to contact me about this issue even though I had told him in an earlier email to keep me informed (I was the one paying for the service and my name was on the contract). He said that they could proceed with the job only after I had the crawl space dug out and the debris removed. I then contacted another radon mitigation company and they came and completed the work without incident or need to modify the crawl space area. The radon level is now below the 4pCi/l level and they charged less ($330) than the quoted price from Radon Environmental. Mr. Brinneman faulted me for not informing him of the condition of the crawl space but I was truthful in telling him as much as I knew about it. What seems to be too common with this type of company is that they provide a quote without ever looking at the job. When the workman came up and completed the phase 1 of the job I showed him where the crawl space was and that would have been the obvious opportunity for him to check out the area to see if there were any problems which could have avoided the subsequent missteps.

One person installed the system in about 4 hours. The company had good communication and we felt comfortable having them in our home and with their abilities. We had a different company come out and did not feel as comfortable as we did with Radon Environmental. I thought the pricing was good and I would recommend their services to others.

The technician showed up within an hour of the agreed upon time. I was given an explanation of the task that was to be performed. We discussed the routes of installation and I let the technician go to work. I did not need to check on the technician a single time. Everything was done and working within 4 hrs. The installation is functional and very professional looking.

I set the installation up with Mike. Mike was patient and able to explain in detail the process the installer would follow. He seemed very knowledgeable and well versed in radon mitigation. The installer arrived on time and ready to work. He evaluated the job and explained each step. I asked if there was a way to avoid attaching the big PVC pipe and running up the outside of my (new to me) home. He climbed into my crawl space and found a way to pipe the radon through the crawl space and up and out through my attic. He cut a hole in the roof and installed the vent and it looks just like a plumbing vent. It cost a little more ($150.), but it was worth it to me. I was also very impressed with the cleanup, if you didn't know the system was just installed, you never would have guessed it. Excellent job.

I contacted Radon Environmental through Angieslist. Mike Brenneman was polite and efficient and sent me a quote for the install. I initially scheduled the installation on July 5 and forgot to call up and cancel the appointment due to a personal emergency. The tech had come and waited for almost an hour before giving up. I was contacted and though it was my fault for the no show, Mike was kind enough to send the tech out again at no additional cost. The tech, Damon, was very professional in his work. The good thing is he works late, so he came in around 4:00 PM as I had requested and finished the job just short of 8:00 PM. When he completed his work he cleaned up after himself and instructed me what to watch out for. I will be testing the basement for radon in a couple of weeks but I am confident that it will be fine.

Our radon levels were high so we had them put in a mitigation system for us. They were here for the better part of 8 hours to install it, but they were very friendly and tidy, so it was no bother to us. I was a little annoyed with the fact that the final cost was about $200 over the original quote, but it works good, so I can't complain too much. Our radon levels were high before they came and now they're WELL below the EPA standard.

Great comapany to work with! They helped correct a radon mitigation system by installing it properly and per code. We had a reverse flow system installed in the basement, which was causing many issue such as condensation on the PVC. They were able to install a pressurized system installing the unit in the attic. This removed condensation. They did a great job priced well. The original company wanted more - and they were unwilling to correct an issue they were responsible for.

I had a very good experience with Radon Environmental. The job was not as involved as I had initially expected because the basic infrastructure was already in place which resulted in savings of $125. It did take some time to find the location of the stack but the installation of the fan and sump pump cover went smoothly with minimum disruption and mess. Damen was punctual, polite, efficient, and left no mess. I am also very appreciative of prior member reviews particularly by those who referenced the proper credentials for this type of home project.

I had decent communication with Mike Brenneman, the company president, through the bid process, though I did not receive the bid when I asked the first time, and had to ask a second time. I chose Radon Environmental based on their Angie's List rating and my phone conversation with Mike Brenneman. On the day of the installation the technician, Chris, called me in the morning to say he was running late due to a fitness class an that he would arrive 20 minutes after the scheduled time. I had people waiting on me at work to finish my part of a job before they could start, so I wasn't too happy with the late arrival, even though it was 20 minutes. That translates into a fair bit of money when all the people waiting are in the high-end technology sector. Chris seemed knowledgeable, gave good answers to my questions, and did a good job with the radon system installation overall. I didn't like the finish work on the electrical - he removed an outlet receptacle to hard-wire the system, and left the receptacle on top of the wall box and an open hole in the plate cover, which was just a small annoyance. The major issue was damage to my sump system. When I came home after work, I noticed that my sump pump was continuously running. I looked through the nifty observation port, and saw that the connection from the pump outlet to the PVC outlet pipe had been broken, and the water was just spraying right back into the pit instead of being pumped out. I called Mike Brenneman and left a message complaining about the tardiness of the tech and the damage to the sump. When he called back, instead of apologizing Mike first tried to convince me it is normal for water to spray back into the pit through the weep-hole. I know the difference between the leak from a 1/8" hole and a broken connection dumping all the water back into the sump pit. When I told him that the PVC pipe coming out of the sump pit lid had been cut and a new rubber coupling installed, Mike insisted multiple times that their technicians are not plumbers, and that Chris would not have done anything like that. Having worked on the sump system just before the radon system installation, I knew very well that there was no coupling before the radon work. The only thing I had asked Chris to do when installing the sump lid was to make sure that the sump pumps (primary and backup) were properly supported on the bricks in the bottom of the pit, as I knew he was going to have to move the pumps to do the work. No matter what I said, Mike kept insisting that they arenot responsible for any kind of maintenance of the sump pump, even when I questioned whether they are responsible to repair damage caused by the technician during installation. Eventually Mike told me that if I hired a plumber, and the plumber verified that the damaged was caused by Mike's technician, then Mike would pay for half of the repair. I told him that no plumber would come in after the fact, look at the damaged system, and state that he was certain the damage was done by the Radon Environmental technician. At the end, Mike still denied responsibility, but finally offered to pay for half of the plumber's repair bill if I were to hire a plumber. He apologized for Chris' tardiness and the time I lost from work. He also stated that they would send someone out to reseal the sump pit lid for free once the repairs are done. In conclusion, I am almost completely happy with the radon system installation and Chris' professionalism in that arena. I am thoroughly upset and dissatisfied with the damage dome to my sump pump system and especially Mike Brenneman's refusal to take any responsibility for it. Since I am now tied to his company for service throughout the life of my radon system, I can only hope the customer service will improve.

Initially our radon level was about 11, and it needs to be down near 3 or 4. So we contacted Mike via phone and got a quote from him very promptly. We got a couple of other quotes, but they were not able to complete the work in a timely manner, and this company was able to get us into their schedule very quickly. The work was done in the cold of winter, and was delayed a little because of it when the hole had to be drilled from the outside of the house in, but overall it was a good experience. Mike was very helpful in explaining everything over the phone, and the installer answered any questions that we had.
Description of Work: A new radon system was installed. This included PVC pipe core drilled into the floor of the basement, a radon fan and outlet pipe outside the house, and a new steel sump pump lid with a viewport into the sump pit, and caulking around the lid to create the vacuum seal necessary for the radon mitigation system to function properly.

John first came out a couple of weeks to refill oil in "U" gauge on unit. He took a reading and found airflow weak. After climbing in an attic, he located the fan, disassembled it, and put it back together. Then he left a charcoal can test kit for a radon reading. After mailing can to the lab the results were elevated. John returned and replaced the fan with a larger horse power speed, and yet found air not pulling as it should. He located the area where the air flow was restricted and repaired it. Our house has sold and an inspection is in two days and I was really grateful to John for prioritizing our situation. I highly recommend them for any radon issues.

Opinion about how important and how difficult it is to reduce radon levels is divided. Radon Environmental provided a bid based on information I gave over the telephone about the year of the house's construction, construction type etc. I hesitated to accept a bid from someone who had not actually seen the house. But other contractors I contacted provided higher bids and offered no guarantee. So eventually after speaking with several realtors who assured me that the process was relatively uncomplicated, pumping air from the area beneath the foundation out of the house, I decided to go with Radon Environmental. I was extremely pleased with the mitigator, Chris Jordan, who is certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) http://www.nrpp.info/. Chris advised us on how to proceed and cared about our long term expenses. Once he got working, Chris was efficient and neat; I note, too, that he is officially licensed by the state of Indiana ( http://www.in.gov/isdh/files/1_Radon_Mitigators_List.pdf). Chris's credentials were another important factor in my decision to go with Mike Brenneman and Radon Environmental. Unfortunately, the first attempt at remediation did not lower radon levels sufficiently; they came in at 4pCi/L, and the EPA recomends a level below that number. I was very impressed that Mr. Brenneman took the initiative in honoring his guarantee and did so promptly. As he noted the World Health Organization recommends a number below 2.7. But we were quite happy with 3. I only have one serious reservation about dealing with Radon Environmental and that has to do with the contract he sends out. I always follow the procedure recommended by Angie's list and never pay the full amount agreed "until the job is completed to [my] satisfaction." Angie's list recommends at least 10%; I often go for 50%; in this case about 33%. Mr. Brenneman [1] asks for payment in full prior to the start of the job, and contrary to the recommendations for Radon contractors specifically, [2] he does not automatically provided customers with test results certified directly by an independent laboratory. The second problem is minor; Brenneman uses a reputable local lab (Microair) and all you have to do is to ask for the results to be emailed directly to you. The first problem is potentially major. When the expenditure is often quite high ($1000), nobody should find themselves without leverage in the event of a disagreement about whether the work is satisfactory. Be careful, protect yourself, even when dealing with a reputable business like Radon Environmental. To summarize: Indiana is a state where lots of people in many homes are exposed to dangerous radon levels, as you can tell from the map: http://www.epa.gov/radon/zonemap.html#mapcolors What's more there are not a lot of licensed mitigators, and there isn't much reliable information out there, so we're lucky to have businesses like Radon Environmental and places to share information like Angie's List.

Response from Radon Environmental, Inc.
Thank you for your favorable review. I appreciate your attention to detail and willingness to share your experience. In response to your concerns, I do not require payment before work is completed. In the Radon industry, the majority of business comes from real estate transactions. Quite often customers are moving, or out of town and will not be able to be present at the home for the installation process. On my bid proposal, I give my customers the option to leave payment information ahead of time. I do not charge a credit card or cash a check until the radon system has been fully installed. At the completion of the installation process, I provide customers with an E.P.A. approved 48 hour charcoal test canister. Our test packet comes with instructions and prepaid postage to send the canister back to the lab. To address the second minor concern, the main reason customers do not receive an e-mail directly from the lab is that the canisters are originally purchased by Radon Environmental before they are given to a customer. Therefore the canisters are registered under my company's contact information. We also send our customers a packet of information (pictures, paid receipt, etc...), which includes Micro Air's official test results. I hope my response clears up any misunderstandings. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review. Warm regards, Mike Brenneman President Radon Environmental

It went great. The company was very responsive and respectful of our schedule as to when to complete the work. The gentleman came out and found that the system was mostly okay, but that a lid had not been installed on the sump pump. That was a critical need for the system to work properly. He installed and sealed a lid on the sump pump. He waited a couple of days for the air to recirculate as it should and then retested. He was extremely cooperative as to when we could schedule the work, because, as it turned out, he needed to visit the home three separate times.
Description of Work: We had a radon system installed by another company at the time of purchase of our home. We since learned that not all work was completed as it should have been done. We called Radon Environmental to check and correct any problems found and to retest.
