Kitchen remodeling, basement finishing, built-in cabinetry, decks, siding (including installation of James Hardie products), architectural restoration, home improvement projects, small projects & major home renovations.
Once they got started the project went very well. They were pretty busy so I was forced to wait a couple months. But they don't use subs, which I liked, and all the work was top notch. I'm very satisfied with the results and would definitely use them again for future projects.
Description of Work: They designed and installed a custom attic ladder, added attic decking, and re-enforced our roof and attic framing.

This was a major project, involving a great deal of excavating, block-work, building a 2 car garage with a master bedroom and en suite above. Given the scope of the work this was a lengthy project and involved a lot of different subcontract work but Phelps and Sons made sure this work was done correctly and to our satisfaction. You can count on this crew to take your concerns seriously and they will make sure you are happy with the job. Further more they stand behind their work and after being paid and the job done we had a minor concern over a door adjustment and they came out and took care of it right away. The value that this crew brings is really in the many years experience and taking the time to make sure the job is done right and you are satisfied.
Description of Work: Major remodel, 2 car garage add-on with room addition.
Mr. Phelps and his crew were a pleasure to work with. Their craftsmanship was excellent. They were responsive to our needs. We love our "new" house and will absolutely use them for any renovation needs we may have in the future.
Description of Work: Mr. Phelps and his crew extensively renovated our 1970s house, including removing walls, adding support beams, correcting underlying structural problems, totally renovating the kitchen, covering all downstairs popcorn ceilings, installing hardwood floors on the first and second stories of the house and stairs, adding lighting throughout the first floor, tiling the laundry room, and replacing the front door.

Should have been a six week job and it turned into a 12 week job. Very stressful for my wife and I. I do not feel that Tom listened to my concerns about the work and I don't feel he tried to address those concerns. Problems with the layout drawing from the cabinet supplier and how his folks installed the cabinets. I feel Tom would not take responsibility for being the cabinet installer and his being responsible for working with the cabinet designer to make sure the layout and install went as it was planned to go. Problems caused the coutner tops to have to be modified due to the base cabinet install. Tom blamed the kitchen designer, but I feel it is Tom's job to work out any of these problem as part of the contractor and install on the job prior to having the counter tops installed. UPDATE: Below is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Tom Phelps on Saturday 9-13-2014 and his response on Sunday 9-14-2014. This was 5-6 weeks before the beginning of the work. The layout drawings and kitchen views were attached to this e-mail. Included in the e-mail was the brand of cabinets we finalized the project on, the name of the designer, his phone number and his e-mail. Tom acknowledges receipt of this e-mail by saying he will contact him with any questions. Tom had this information 5-6 weeks prior to beginning the work and in fact I sent this information to him several times during this 5-6 week period. Tom's crew installed both runs of the base cabinets 3/4" short of what the layout drawings showed they should be. They installed the filler pieces in the wrong orientation causing the base cabinet runs to be short. He would not take responsibility for this and even to this day will not. I don't know if he is purposefully being misleading or can't remember, but either way it is his responsibility as the contractor to manage the job and he did not do a very good job on my project. He even states this was a 3 week job and the counter tops took 3 weeks, this is 6 weeks. The work took 12 weeks to complete. We started well in advance and should have been done by Christmas, but Tom did not finish until almost New Years so our house was a mess during the holidays which we planned properly to have the work done except for the poor job of managing the project. Email: [member name], I will call the cabinet guy on Monday. The panel should always come a little larger than the exact size of the cabinetry. The crown molding should be fine at two and five eighths. Thanks for the information, now I can see what you are talking about. Have a good weekend, Tom On Saturday, September 13, 2014 4:57 PM, Tom: Here are the view layouts of the kitchen. If you open [member name] you will see the back of the peninsula. The two doors tot he left actually open and are a cabinet. The two tot he right are a single width panel with the doors applied. My cabinet guys question is since this covers the back of a 18 & 15" cabinets do you want this exactly 33" wide or would you like it a little wide, say 1/4" so you have extra to trim if you need it. I am purchasing cabinets from Direct plus. Medallion brand. My contact there is Jim. 317-337-1400 they are closed on Sun & Mon. Would you consider calling him to get more clarity on why this might be necessary? He seems to think it might be when mating the panel to the actual cabinet next to it. Not sure why? Thanks. Response from Phelps & Sons Construction
This customer asked me to give him a price on installation of a custom kitchen designed and built by a company I am familiar with for their integrity in design and production of quality products. Based on the print Mr. [Member Name Removed] gave me from that company I gave him a bid to install the cabinets and do the plumbing and electrical involved. I figured this job would take two weeks, one week for mechanicals and one for installation of cabinetry. After securing that bid the customer changed cabinet suppliers without consulting us at all. He purchased and designed the kitchen over the phone with someone else. I decided to go ahead with the installation. We did not get a print until we were 4 days into the installation, we were provided with an animated inaccurate computer generated picture that later proved not to be the layout of the cabinets delivered. not known to us The design incorporated upper cabinets that could not be installed until the lower cabinets and the tops were installed. He then informed me he expected to wait 3 weeks for tops to be made because of the design. This problem was not my fault It was the fault of POOR Design .I am sorry for the stress he brought upon himself. Tom Phelps owner

Tom was good with returning phone calls and e-mails. We have 7 year old home. Parts of our front porch post were rotting. The original carpentry was not very good, lots of gaps letting water in. They fixed it like new, better than new actually. No gaps and a better design so water runs off. Excellent carpentry! Matched the paint perfectly.

We had Tom, his son, and another employee of his do a buildout of a wall and put in some French doors. The estimate was slightly higher than others we received but came in right on price when all was said and done. We went with Phelps & Sons because you get what you pay for. They were on time, cleaned up after themselves both days they were on site, and friendly. We were happy with them and would use their services again if we decide to remodel further.

Once I contacted Tom he promptly returned my call and scheduled a time to look over the prospective job and discuss what I wanted. He took various measurements and made some helpful suggestions. The biggest obstacle was finding a door to match my existing doors, which Tom successfully did. When they started the job all the guys were very polite and professional. I grew up with a dad who did wood working as a hobby and I could immediately tell these guys were finish carpenters. When the job was finished you could not tell it was not a part of the original build. They left the job site clean every day. Although Tom didn't personally do all the work, he was there several times a day to give direction on what he wanted done and check on the ongoing work. I will most definitely use them again for any type remodel job I have in the future. The price quoted was the price billed, no add on surprises. I highly recommend them.

Met with Mr. Phelps on the 24th of May. Called first week of June to see if quote was ready. Received the quote the next week. Was told up front that he was running 4-6 weeks out. Confirmed job on June 21st. Job was to start July 9th week. Job was pushed out 2 weeks passed this date. Only problem for us was that we had a painter scheduled to come after they were to have completed their work. Job started on July 23-25th. Job completed and looked good. His son was prompt in returning to fix the soffitt below the window. Tom is a very kind and hard-working man. His sons helped with the project as well. Was pleased with overall completed project.
Description of Work: Removed existing trim and replaced rotten wood of a south facing bay window with Azec weather proof material. Caulked all areas. No painting done per our request.
Every project has its bumps in the road. The secret is communication and flexibility. If you don't care about quality, call someone else.
Description of Work: This year, Tom and his crew completely remodeled my kitchen and master bathroom and brought my 6,500 square foot home out of the eighties and into the 21st century. The guys installed beautiful new tile throughout the lower level, replaced track lighting throughout the house with recessed lighting, replaced every piece of shiny brass hardware with oil-rubbed bronze, replaced shiny chrome fixtures in 4 1/2 bathrooms with brushed nickel, replaced some of my cabinetry with matching custom cabinets in the kitchen, two bathrooms and the master closet, installed new tub, toilet, sinks and a spectacular tile shower in the master bath, rebuilt the master closet to maximize the use of space and added new skylights in the master shower and master closet. My house looks like something out of a magazine! Tom has done many projects for me over the years. This was the largest, and most spectacular.

I am responsible for missing the meeting and not calling , I did contact you as soon as i discovered the meeting had been missed and made arrangements to meet with you at a different time. this meeting did not get transfered into my calander. Honest Mistake Thomas Phelps ( owner Phelps& Sons Construction LLC )
.Pulling in a good plumber was essential and Tom certainly got a great one in Jim Raikes who actually drew us a picture of what he expected to fine beneath the bathroom tile (pipes embedded in cement) and he was right. When estimates come in with all potential problems laid out before they start, it goes a long way in creating confidence. The project did take 9 weeks which I thought was a little long, but then, we did go a little crazy on our tile design. Tom did that job himself because his main tile guy was busy on another project. But the results were wonderful Tom also had a chance to do the woodworking he so good at,. built and installed a three door wide, 5" deep medicine cabinet. Since we opted out of a vanity, the custom cabinet holds everything we need. Everyone who sees the room says it fits the style of the house and looks like it might have been original.
Description of Work: Tearing out an 80-year-old, four piece bathroom, updating plumbing lines, adding shower light and exhaust fan, enlarging medicine cabinet, leveling floor and installing ceramic tile on the floor, up the walls, and, in the tub/shower alcove, to the ceiling, installing new pedestal sink, tub and shower, towel fixtures and security bar.

Tom first comes in and gives a quote, brings in electrician, plumber to view the area and give him bids. Tom gives us a budget and recommends locations to purchase title, fixtures. Tom also gave suggestions when I felt overwhelmed with choices. Focus on keeping us within budget and not trying to sell us more then we wanted or had originally agreed upon. Team came in and removed old shower. very impressed with how they covered everything in the adjoining bedroom to cut down on dust. Sub contractors were polite and came when scheduled. Everything finished in about 3 weeks. Took about a week longer because I added additional fixtures in the smaller bathrooms and waited for those to arrive before so plumber had to make only one trip. Very impressed with Tom and his employees. Will use him again.
Description of Work: Our 1988 masterbathroom fiber glass shower was removed and replaced with tile-floor to ceiling, shower door, new shower drain had to be installed, new double marble sink, new faucets in all the bathrooms, light fixtures and exhaust fan.

Tom Phelps is a perfectionist. He studies the work to see what would be the best way to handle the work. He laid the tile floor and the tile shower himself and took care to make sure it was ascetically pleasing. He has good carpentry skills and a good eye for detail. You can trust that Tom will do the work the right way.
Description of Work: Phelps and Sons tore out an existing bathroom. They added a window, built a walk-in shower, added a new floor, new lighting and all new drywall. The entire bathroom was remodeled.
Tom Phelps remodeled this kitchen in 1984 and came back many times to do other work. This time he came back to update everything in the kitchen except the cabinets he put in 25 years before...they were still beautiful and are next up for refinishing with Tom's referral. Tom's two sons and great tile guy were diligent with electrical and plumbing problems that had plagued our old house for some time. A former kitchen desk was replaced with a new three drawer counter high unit that is fabulous and they installed a beautiful a tile back splash that took a week and is just a masterful job. After the old damaged formica countertop was removed and before the new granite one was installed, Tom found a new box of drill bits that had fallen between cabinet boxes 25 years ago...they were his! Loyalty works for us as we continue to improve our family home. We'll call Tom and his family every time.
Phelps construction has remodeled our kitchen twice in 25 years, updated our basement, treated a flat roof. In 2011 I called them to help enlarge the basement laundry room and address some moisture issues. The spring rains revealed larger problems and Phelps stuck with it trying to diagnose and address the issues. Besides a larger and brighter, better functioning laundry room/storage center, the new windows and improved window wells have corrected several water issues and increased our energy savings. The french drains installed in the front yard have also eliminated several issues with rain. The price quoted increased quite a bit as we added more projects, but the requests and work were driven by me, not the company. So we paid feel we paid appropriately. We got quite a lot done and are very happy with the results.
Description of Work: Basement laundry room, tearing out storage room, treat and waterproof walls, install new lighting and shelving, replace steel casement windows with glass block, deepen and cover window wells, installed french drain in front of house.
