After sealing my driveway myself about 4 years ago, I decided once was enough and went to Angie's List. I should note that I had no gaps, holes, or weeds in my driveway at this time - it just needed sealed. I accepted a quote from Young and Sons, which is in someway connected with D&R Asphalt, which is the company that actually performed the work. Not sure if D&R was a sub used by Young and Sons, or if there is some other connection A couple of weeks after the work was completed, and before we left to go on vacation, I noticed that there were small holes in the surface and that weeds were growing through the asphalt. As I stated above, we never had this kind of issue before!! It wasn't until August 2 that I contacted Young and Sons via email and told them about the problem. My wife received a call back from Don Rollins. My wife reported that all Mr. Rollins could offer was that "they didn't cause the problem" and that "we should spray roundup on the weeds." My wife couldn't believe the attitude that Mr. Rollins had over this. I contacted Young and Sons via email on 8/3 and stated my dissatisfaction over this, and this time included pictures of the problem. Robin Franklin from Young and Son called me and was very apologetic, even stating that he talked to Mr. Young who was very concerned. He said someone would contact me shortly. No one called me until I sent another email on 8/28 asking for someone to please contact me. On August 30 I received a call again from Mr. Rollins. I told Mr. Rollins again that I have several holes (what my children call volcanos, since the coating has raised up and then a hole has formed in the center, much like a volcano), and that I was concerned about moisture getting in and causing problems, particularly in the winter. Mr. Rollins told me again that "roundup will take care of the weeds." I assured Mr. Rollins that I had done that, and I wasn't worried about weeds - I was worried about the "volcanos", and that I had discovered more since my original email. He said that there was nothing they could have done to cause this. He then described a process by which they could fix it, and then started telling me what it would cost. I told him I couldn't believe that I would have to pay for anything, since I didn't have a problem, they do work, and now I have a problem. He insisted that this was just a coincidence, but again stated that they did nothing to cause this. At no time did Mr. Rollins even volunteer to come out and look at the issue, just in case it was perhaps an issue on their part. I also find it interesting that originally, all he said we should do is "spray roundup", but once I brought up concerns over moisture, he then told me what they could do to fix it, and stated that I should be concerned about moisture getting in and all the damage it could do. I have used Angie's List for years, and this is the first time I've ever even come close to having an issue with a company.

Response from D & R ASPHALT
Weeds growing up through almost a foot of compacted stone and hardened asphalt are unusual but it does happen and cannot be attributed to an application of seal coat on the surface of the driveway. I couldn’t get the member to accept that fact. I went on to say that weeds in a driveway should be treated with an herbicide like Roundup and then the holes should be sealed to prevent water infiltration. Since we are in no way responsible for damage caused by these weeds, I don’t feel obligated nor should I be expected to repair the driveway at my expense. We have sealed thousands of driveways and commercial properties while being associated with Angie’s List without any unresolved issues. That fact also speaks for itself.
