My family could have died because of Cornerstone Inspection Services' negligence. Cornerstone Inspection inspected our new home July 2024 before we bought it. We noticed a gas smell since the first day of walking through the utility room but no one said anything and when we received our inspection report and it didn't have anything about a gas leak, we trusted them and thought a little smell must be normal. In Nov 2024 our extended family said we should get it checked out. Centerpoint immediately detected 5-6 large leaks all over the utility room, locked the outside gas box and shut it off, leaving us with no heat or hot water for 2 days before we could have a plumber replace most of the gas lines in the utility room. The leak was so severe my family and I could have died if our house blew up. Not only did Cornerstone Inspection completely miss 5-6 severe gas leaks, when we reached asking for help with the bill, they went as low as they could go. First, they accused, and still accuse both large well-reputable plumbing companies in Noblesville of trying to sell us unnecessary and expensive repairs. The reality is, we had the 2 independent professional companies both agree with each other the same scope (quotes were $1500-2,200) I told both companies CIS accused them of trying to sell unnecessary fixes and they were rightly offended. One asked for CIS's name. Additionally, both companies had 4 plumbers (2 each with managers involved) speak into the proposals vs 1 CIS inspector and his plumber friend he refers to. By the way, his friend never even came in our house to assess anything before accusing these other companies. Second, CIS claims all the leaks occurred in the 60 day timeframe from when they inspected it to when we moved in. The previous owners did not have any gas line or other work done in the utility room in that timeframe. Both plumbing companies say there is no way all those leaks immediately came to be in that short timeframe and the one who we hired to replace the lines said it happened over a long period of time (years) due to improper original installation. Note: We learned CIS only use their noses to detect if there is a gas leak whereas there is a special gas detector tool Centerpoint uses that I'm sure they could invest in. To this day CIS will not budge. They accuse 2 companies of excessive selling and make a claim that is completely bogus to save themselves. They even quoted us multiple lines of their contract saying the inspection is not a warranty or guaranteed, etc. So, they're basically saying in their contract, if they get something wrong, they're off the hook, (including a $1500-2200 multiple gas leaks situation where a house could blow up.) To me that means, don't trust anything they say. And even more, if they can miss this magnitude of a gas leak, your family could be in grave danger if you use them. Stay away from CIS and pass this true event on to others.

Response from Cornerstone Inspection Services
First, I want to state that the safety of our clients is paramount to what we do and has been for the nearly 30yrs we've been in business! Inspection was in mid-May 2024 with closing in mid-July. Repairs to the gas lines were not done until November 13th. Through several email correspondences with the client which started in November and stated they had smelled gas when they did their walk through with their real estate agent prior to closing on the home in July. This particular client is also a professional in the home repair/remodel industry and would have had more knowledge than the average person to at least ask questions at that time. Also, in email correspondence provided by the client, their realtor confirmed that he did not smell gas during our inspection, only that the home had a strong odor of cleaners from the sellers recently cleaning the home. 4 mths later/6 mths after inspection repairs took place. We never accused anyone of anything, only that we believed, and still do, that all the gas lines in the home did not need to be replaced (which was the repair performed) and that there might have been a more economical & safe solution to the issue which our plumber confirmed. The super sensitive devices which the gas company uses to sniff for gas leaks are not required to be used by plumbers, repair people or inspectors in evaluating gas lines for leaks. References to the agreement were simply to point out to the client that we did have an agreement between us for the inspection with clauses which we believed were pertinent to the discussion we were having through email. Based on the length of time between our inspection and when the repair took place plus the fact that the client was made aware prior to closing that there was a gas leak and then chose not to act that information for 4 months and that they did not give us the chance to reinspect the gas lines, which we would have done free of charge, we informed the client that we could not participate in any repairs to the gas lines.

Bill, with Cornerstone Inspections, was absolutely superb. Being that this was my first home inspection, I had done research to know what I was looking for but Bill made everything easy, walked me through any questions I had (which were a lot) and made the experience as fun and informative as possible. I'm very very impressed with this company and Bill, and would highly recommend to anyone looking to get their home or future home inspected.

Inspector spent at most an hour on new home inspection- missed things and felt that I was owed curtesy of walking the house with him- he was done and ready to go when I arrived less than one hour past his arrival time. Did not even show me electrical box. Have several things at issue with call in to manager. I was told by inspector on revisit- that was less than 6 mins, I could gorilla glue the dishwasher door, use shims for my toilet that does not sit correctly on the floor, he took photos of the tile issue, and, he left before he finished what I had asked for. I feel that this is poor service and treated badly as a female home owner. Would not use them again.

Cornerstone Inspection helped me on the purchase of my home. The owner, Randy, happened to be my actual home inspector and he walked me through the all of the oddities of my 100 year old home, and made me feel comfortable with everything vs scaring me off of the sale (because he certainly could have!). He and his teams' deep knowledge, care, and respect for my concerns were worth more than what I actually paid for - I felt they cared that I understood every aspect of the property and why things were being called out, and/or not being called out, etc. I highly recommend Cornerstone Inspection Company for their professionalism, depth of knowledge, and integrity. `

Cornerstone was great with our new home construction home inspection. Meghan was great at scheduling to meet our needs, providing thorough pricing and information, always responsive, friendly and courteous, and our inspector Todd did a very detailed job and found some things we never would have known or noticed, and some that would have been a real pain to have discovered after moving in. We found Cornerstone to be slightly lower priced than comparable services but of very high quality. We would recommend them to friends and family and will work with them again if we ever buy another home. Worth every cent.

I made my appointment with Cornerstone for 2/25/16 at 3:00 PM. I specifically informed the lady who set up the appointment that we wanted to be present for the home inspection. She assured me that it would not be a problem. I arrived to the property early at 2:45 PM. It was a cloudy day, about 35 degrees outside. The inspector was already in the house with all the lights on. When I entered the home the Inspector informed me that he had already inspected the roof and exterior of the home. I should have stopped him and made him start over but I didn't. Though I was irritated I remained calm and polite. The inspector moved swiftly throughout the home with us following him but had no problem stopping to answer our questions or to specifically inspect things inside the home that we pointed out. Listed on the report was that the gutter on the back side of the house was loose and needed to be evaluated, repaired or replaced. In July I got an estimate to have the gutters replaced. In the meantime (mid August) we were cleaning the gutters and noticed that not only was the gutter loose, but also about 4 feet of the gutter board was deteriorated leaving a gaping hole between the gutter and the roof. I called the Cornerstone office on August 22nd to tell them what I found because this was a major hole and I felt it should have been seen by the inspector and reported on the list. I explained to the lady in the office that my 90 day inspection warranty had passed but because I paid for their service I have the right to give feedback on such a serious issue especially when the inspector started early and without us. She said I needed to speak with either the supervisor or the inspector and that one of them would call me back. Three and a half weeks went by and no one called me so I called again on September 13th. This time I was given the inspector's cell phone number. The inspector and I spoke. I never asked anyone from Cornerstone for financial assistance. I also explained to the inspector that even though my 90 day warranty had expired, I felt that he should know that he missed a huge hole and that I take some responsibility because I did not confront him about inspecting the exterior and roof without us on that day. I sent the inspector a video of what we found and he said he wanted to come by to see the hole which he finally did. On October 31st when the inspector came out and climbed up on the ladder, he was able to see it. We all saw this hole while standing on the ladder; we did not climb on the roof. The inspector did apologize and asked me "What do you want to happen?" My response was, "What can be done since I'm out of my 90 day warranty?" He said he would speak with his boss and get back with me. At this point I feel that any offer would have been appreciated. On November 2nd, I received an e-mail from the inspector and copied to the president of Cornerstone stating that because the report listed the gutter as loose and that it needed to be evaluated, replaced or repair that Cornerstone would not participate in any repairs. Now this irritated me because I felt that the inspector volunteering to come out and look at the hole was not only a waste of my time but also they were refusing a repair that I did not ask for. This president never contacted me directly. He only replied via e-mail to defend the inspector when I stated in my e-mail response that I felt the inspector was in a hurry and did not inspect the back side of the roof and gutter area, he only took pictures- there is a difference (The report has one picture that he took from the ground up of this area). I reminded the President that my call was to provide feedback about my experience with his company first- which I have the right to do and at the very least I expected decent customer service. The gutters have been replaced at which time we also learned that the house had no drip edge; this was not listed on the report either and I feel should have been documented. We paid to be there for the entire inspection and we did not get that. The inspection is not only for the report to use when negotiating he sale price of the home but also so that the buy knows what costs he may be faced with later and so that our questions can be answered. I understand things may be overlooked. But poor customer service is a deal breaker for me. I will always communicate to the company before leaving a poor review. I feel the President and inspector of Cornerstone handled my complaint very unprofessionally -which is why I would not use them again or recommend this company.

I am extremely pleased with my experience with this company. I would recommend them to anyone wanting a good company to inspect their home. A girl Lauren answered my call a couple days ago and was able to fit us in their schedule. We have a time crunch because we will be going on our honeymoon in less than a week. They were friendly, fast, and very professional. Harry preformed the inspection and was great. He took time to go over the inspection with me and sent the report before he left the house. Thank you, Cornerstone!

The inspector Cornerstone sent out was efficient, professional and prompt. He took his time and didn't seem to rush the inspection. He answered all of our questions, so that we gained a really good understanding of the state of the home. We had read the inspection report from a different company the home seller had used. Cornerstone found even more deficiencies, including code violations, which we were grateful to know. The report Cornerstone provided came quickly and was easy to read and understand. We may not buy the home they inspected for us. If we don't, we'll use Cornerstone for the inspection on the next home we make an offer on.

We have hired cornerstone to do a full home inspection (1 with raydon testing, both with termite inspection) for 2 seperate homes. Long story short, we were buying a house and some issues arose that couldn't fixed in a timely manner so the sale was canceled. We hired them most recently for another house we are interested in. I will speak for both jobs because I received equally awesome service on both accounts. The first house was inspected Feb 2015 and most recently in September 2015. Both jobs were performed by Todd. Todd is very knowledgeable and thorough at what he does. He was early for both jobs and was able to explain each issue he found in terms I understand. He forwarded all necessary documents to me and my agents immediately. The company was great about contacting me over the phone to follow up on the service I received. Although I hope I never need to hire them again (we are finally buying a house!), I would most definitely use them again and refer them to family and friends.

Cornerstone Inspection Services was contracted by the potential home buyer to inspect my home. Kevin Austin inspected my flat roof and essentially failed it on the report recommending repair or replace. I had multiple roofing companies come out and inspect my home and they all said it is normal wear and tear for an 8 year old flat roof and that it doesn't need anything. The inspector, Kevin Austin, also called my roof a "roll roof." It is not. It is a torch down modified roof. How can an inspector inspect something properly without even knowing what it is??!!! Due to his lack of knowledge, he made an unfounded claim which led to the buyers walking away. The next buyer had an inspection preformed and the inspector noted, "Normal wear" on the roofing section of the new report and THAT WAS IT. It passed with flying colors. I am very unhappy at Kevin's lack of knowledge as an inspector. I would NOT use this company for inspection because their employees do not have the proper knowledge for the job.

Response from Cornerstone Inspection Services
I have reviewed our inspectors report on this home and would like to point out that the "torched modified roofing" is in fact a rolled roofing product. It comes in 3' wide rolls and is torched in place while being rolled across the roof by a propane torch. The average life of this product is 8-10 years and while it is showing normal aging - it is aging and, based on the photos in the report, does have some issues which should be addressed to insure that it will last the remainder of its expected life cycle. I would also like to point out that the home has several other major/safety concerns including numerous electrical safety hazards, serious mold throughout the crawl space, rot in the crawl space, and active water leaks in the crawl space among others. It would appear to me that the roof condition was only a small part of why the buyers chose to not move forward with the purchase of this home.
