Tim showed up the afternoon before the concrete was scheduled to arrive. He jackhammered the areas needed to be taken out. This ended up being a harder process than anticipated because the concrete had been poured 12" thick. Much thicker than the 4" minimum standard of today. Though this was very labor intensive and left a lot more debris to be hauled off . . . he never once complained or discussed more money. I even brought it up and gave him the opportunity to up-charge me a little and he said "no, we're fine. It's just part of the business". He got everything prepped and used the boards to form up where the concrete was to be poured. The jackhammered rubble was all neatly put onto a tarp. There were no rocks or powder on my grass. The next morning it rained. Tim called me and told me he had checked with the National Weather people and it was going to be that way all day. He made the necessary phone calls and we postponed until the next day. The following day everything went like clockwork. The concrete was delivered at 11AM. He spent the next couple of hours 'babying' it and smoothing it out. We initially had discussed using a broom finish. This is generally an easier and faster way to do things. But the concrete turned out so nice and smooth that we then discussed leaving it alone. He totally left it up to me and we discussed the pros and cons. The only con being if it was too smooth it would be slippery . . . like a garage floor when it's wet. But he didn't smooth it out that much and there still was plenty of grip on the concrete. If we had used the broom to it . . . it would've been harder to sweep clean and leaves would stick to the surface more instead of being blown off with the wind. We left the finish the way it was and it looks fantastic. He then went and grabbed some lunch to let the concrete set up a little longer. Upon return, he removed the forms, cleaned up the rubble, loaded his truck, and got paid. Tim and I shook hands and he was on his way. I am now looking around and seeing if there is other concrete work I would like done. I always thought of concrete work as being a huge undertaking and "too big of a project". Tim McMurray made it seem like it was as simple as painting a room or hanging a light fixture. I highly recommend him for his professionalism, hard work, and quality of workmanship.
Description of Work: Tim McMurray personally answered my phone call, made an appointment, and met me over at the property at the scheduled time. I wanted a price on having concrete poured over an existing area where the concrete had not only cracked in several areas but also had dropped down 4-6 inches. This made for a very large "last step" at the bottom of the steps. Some concrete needed to be jackhammered out to make for an even starting surface. I had told him the area was about 5'x 8' and he quoted a price of $700 over the phone. Once we looked at the project I decided that I not only wanted the landing at the bottom of the steps done, but also a patio area beside it. That turned the area into 10' x 10'. I was then thinking in my head $1,500 compared to his initial price. The first quote he gave me was to just pour the concrete over the existing. Upon inspection, we needed to do the jackhammering which also left a lot of rubble that needed to be hauled off. I knew that was a lot of extra labor not at first anticipated. Tim looked at me and said "How does $1,500 sound?" and we had ourselves a deal.
