Monroe Furniture Restoration

Furniture Refinishing and Repair

About us

Monroe Furniture Restoration is the culmination of a life long passion for wood working and furniture restoration. I have been repairing, restoring and refinishing furniture for clients in Bloomington and Monroe County since 2002. I have received formal training in furniture restoration from the National Institute of Wood Finishing, The Smithsonian Institution, and from the Marc Adams School of Woodworking where I now serve as an instructor. In 2011 Peter Brockman joined my shop as a craftsman. Pete is a skilled cabinet maker and a graduate of the prestigious Fine Furniture program at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka California. In addition to his furntiure repair skills, Pete is a professional musician and a graduate of the IU School of Music. Pete and I enjoy repairing and restoring furniture and making it useful and beautiful again. Please call or email me today and let's talk about restoring your furniture. Tim Puro- Owner

Work was beautiful! Very knowledgeable and professional. Only problem was that there is a company policy of a $125 minimum charge--which was never mentioned or explained. We are not dissatisfied with that charge as we were pleased with the work done, but the non-disclosure was a nasty surprise.

It looks brand new. The pieces were 35 years old. They were looking dingy, as it was white. My family no longer needed it, so they gave it to me. It now looks pristine, like it just came from the show room floor. He currently repairing and strengthening my dining room table and chairs. The price is very reasonable.
Description of Work: Refinished a complete seven piece bedroom set.

We had purchased a dining room set which had pet damage on two of the chairs. The spindles had been chewed and there were some other scratches. The team at Monroe Furniture Restoration picked up the chairs at our place and brought them back to their workshop for repairs. Their work was excellent, and was completed within the time frame they had told us. The replaces spindles are virtually indistinguishable from the ones in the rest of the set, such that you would not be able to tell which were the two chairs that had to be repaired (other than perhaps because they now look the nicest of the 6!). We would definitely recommend them to others, and in fact will be using them in the future for doing similar refinishing and scratch fixing for the dining table itself, and likely other wood furnishings in the house.

We were very pleased with our experience. The table is now better than it was when it was brand new. Tim, the owner, was very good in explaining what they were going to be doing and why. He showed up on time to inspect the piece, e-mailed an estimate in a few days. The only very minor complaint that I had with him, and it was very minor, was that when he originally talked to us he gave us an estimate of about how long it would take. We wanted to delay the work for about a month, which was fine with him, but then it took longer to finish than he had originally said. My guess is that his work load had changed. I think that he may have forgotten what he originally said. I had to check on the progress and delivery date, would have preferred that he let me know. Our job was probably a fairly simple one to perform but based on the care that they took with ours I could imagine how they would handle a more extensive project. We highly recommend the company, they are very skilled at what they do.
Description of Work: We had an oak dining room table that the original finish was cracking and coming off. The table top was removed from the base and was stripped and sanded multiple times. It was stained to match the other wood, several coats of finish were applied as well as a protective final sealer coat.

He came out the same day that I called him, took a look at it, told me how much it would be. I was in the process of getting other bids at that point. After checking out other companies and seeing how much they would charge. I chose him and he came out picked it up and brought it back when he was finished. It was virtually indistinguishable from the other chairs in the set.
