It is the land line. It is through the computer. I have a local number from Mexico. It does not cost extra to call international. They can call me and it is just a local number for them. If someone calls my mexican number, that line is just for Mexico. It is not extra. They can call me anytime. When my Father was ill, I was able to talk to him all the time. It was free for them.

We signed up for the service because we were moving overseas for 6 months and heard the service would still work in Europe. This was absolutely true. The service was so good we kept it when we moved back to the US and have been with Vonage ever since. I love the visual voicemail. We can see or hear a message from my blackberry when we're out. Happy with their service. Only downside is the price keeps creeping up.

Horrible - do not use them. I bought my own equipment, performed my own installation, paid monthly without a contract (by the way their $24.99/mo service will really run you $32/mo after their nickle/dime fees) and never used the service so I called to cancel and they are trying to stick me with a $40 disconnection charge even though I never signed any contract and selected the "monthly" option for that reason. I am actually on hold right now after getting the runaround about the fee. I have informed them the charge is not authorized and if they process it I will have the transaction refunded/reported by my bank as unauthorized/fraudulent. I asked to be escalated to a supervisor and was transferred to Maria (who refused to give her last name and says that they don't do that - pretty shady) and her badge ID number is 55771. She refused to transfer me to a manager and/or supervisor with authority to waive the fee. I am submitting a complaint with the BBB, too, and processing it as a fraudulent transaction through my bank.

I found that they weren't truthful; you have to have a high-speed Internet connection for it to work. My previous phone company dropped my high-speed Internet when I got my Vonage system. This left me with a phone that did not work. They kept charging me for the service. They sent out a person to my home, which I did not ask for. They sent me a bill for the service call that I did not request, for $99. They charged me $50.00 because they said I did not notify them to not come out. I had canceled a week ahead of time from when the technician was to even come to my home. I did not even know he was still coming because I had canceled the service. I canceled their service because I did not have a high-speed Internet service; they are going to charge me $38.95 for cancellation. They claim I am going to receive $45.58 back from Vonage when I send my equipment back, but I have sent my equipment back, but they claim that they have never received it. I cannot believe all the charges I have received for a service that I am not happy with. Vonage did not let me know that I needed a high-speed connection for their service to work. I got everything resolved but it wasn?t easy. I would not recommend Vonage to anyone.

Buried in the Terms of Service, I found that Vonage allowed themselves these charges. They jab you for an installation fee, a disconnect fee, AND return of an equipment rebate. What kind of rebate does a person have to return to a company? I wound up having to continue service for two additional months at their minimum level ($10/month) to avoid repaying the equipment rebate, but will still be on the hook for the $39.99 disconnect fee. I'm still losing $60 for two months with no service. I did not transfer my Vonage service to my new address because it was only of fair to poor quality. Overall, it was a terrible experience and I wish to caution anyone who keeps this service longer than 60 days. Even if you cancel within 60 days, their "full money back" guarantee requires that you return the equipment in perfect condition in its original box, packaging, etc. Also, Vonage has been successfully sued by at least three other telecom companies for infringement, so beware!
Description of Work: I subscribed to Vonage in June, paying a $29.99 installation fee and receiving one month of service ($24.99) free. In October, I moved, and when I called to cancel my service, I was told that I owed Vonage $145.99; $106 for refund and equipment rebate since I had the service less than 6 months, and $39.99 disconnect fee since I had the service less than 2 years.

This is the cheapest telephone service we've had in decades. At times, I remember you get what you pay for. The sound quality is better this year than in previous years but there are issues. Regular issues are dropped calls, some weird call back ring after you make calls plus regularly I need to dial a number more than once to get through. The plus is that this is cheap phone service, including calls throughout the US. We can talk all the time long distance and still just pay the same monthly rate. There are some tricks to setting up fax services with this too but this year, we could set up all the signals to make it compatible, although it takes some abilities to do this.

When I tried to cancel the service, I was disconnected twice. When I did switch service, they blocked my phone number from use by other Vonage customers trying to call us saying the number is out of service. It took 4 days for them to release the hold. I question this company's ethics.

When I transferred my telephone service from Vonage to Insight, Vongage was notified by Insight on December 18, 2006, with a work order number. Vonage still charged me for service from 12/29/06 to 1/29/07 because I had not notified them personally. They would not accept the notification from "my agent" Insight. I want to caution others who may be using Vonage's service to be careful about this situation or they could be paying for a lot of time they're not getting!

The phone system dis not operate as advertised. The home phone was not reliable and would not work most of the time. After several attempts to rectify the situation with Vonage and having a representative from Vonage come out to the home, the home phone system still did not operate consistently. I have not been able to use the phone as advertised. I asked them to waive the disconnect fee due to the product reliability less than desired. They refuse to waive the disconnect fee. I am requesting Vonage to reimburse me for the disconnect fee because of the quality of the product is not as advertised. David Dyer

This is a telephone service at $25 a month with unlimited local and long distance calling in the US and Canada. It's a VOIP system, which means the telephone call is routed through a high speed internet service. You need to have a good internet provider to enjoy this service. A year ago, the sound quality was a little cheaper sounding than the regular lines. It's nearly caught up in quality now, and it is tremendously less expensive. We also checked, and it now has 911 identification in case of an emergency call in our area, something that VOIP systems are still working on.

The sign-up process can be done on the phone or on the web. While that takes some time, you order the equipment to connect to your cable modem and install it yourself. Equipment shipped quickly and was very easy to install. Once installed, we have unlimited long distance calling in the US for about $25 per month.
