Nice guy but has an excuse for everything. As I said earler, might be best if you understand what you want done and how to do it, monitoring while they are working. Otherwise, the job may be less than you expected. They work short days, usually around 10a until about 3 to 4p. Extends the time to complete the job and the mess that goes with it. For plumbing and reinstalling gas to stove, I lost confidence in the work, so called a plumber to finish the work. Communication is a challenge, likes to text and email. Even with things in writing, still fails to complete tasks without follow up. -Doesn't provide good detailed estimate and does not do change orders. Might be best documenting as you go along but if working and trying to take care of other things in life, hard to find the time. Ultimately, I take responsibility for the job and how it turned out. Wanted to be done by Thanksgiving and have a great job. Compromised and got it done by Christmas. That is how it goes. Would I hire them again? Probably for specific jobs. He is willing to take on about anything but, again, need to stay with him on work and make sure meeting what you expect. Even if not a perfectionist, you might find some challenged areas.
Description of Work: Performed a variety of different jobs. Hired someone so the job would look better than if I did it and was short of time, but didn't turn out to be the case. Needs to be constantly monitored and followed up with, often on the same items. Isn't good at detail level and has a hard time estimating the amount of time it will take to complete. Even after an acceptable delay of a week to start due to some personal issues, estimated would be done by Thanksgiving, job was not completed by Christmas, and I asked he just be done and I would pay him. Examples of detail issues include: -Gutter installed and leaked. Put downspout in a female to male connection rather than other way around, impossible to keep from leaking as water came down. -Assembled cabinets in kitchen and scratched newly installed laminate floor in kitchen, gouges, scrapes, and scratches. Advised could fixed and did try to but still apparent scratches. -Installed dishwasher drain hose but punctured hose during trim install. Had to have reinstalled. -Painting is not their forte. Trim edges were messy and had to be redone a number of times, seriously flawed. -Without approval installed panel trim at ceiling edge in basement, had to ask to remove and just go with paint trim. -Installed exhaust fan crooked. Put in at height of 32 inches. Minimum for fan per instructions is 26 inches. I asked to reinstall at 26" and he refused, finally lowered to 28.5. -Advised RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets were not to be glued per web. For this particular cabinet, glue was advised. So drawers will need to be redone to avoid their coming apart. -Messy: Advised before starting job they would clean up each day. Was not exactly the case: They would start a multiple of jobs in the house, bathroom, basement, and kitchen, before finishing any of them. Each area they worked in would leave the waste behind so I would clean up, thus a mess for over 6 weeks. -Used anything that was around as theirs. This is something most contractors seem to do but annoying to me. You have a shop vac? Use your own. -Tried to install floor trim but couldn't seem to get it right. Finally asked them to just quit. -Kept having to remind him of jobs to do, finally gave up and just ended. Missed crown moulding on bath cabinet, ordering and putting up 2 storm windows outside, for example. What went well: -Paint job finally turned out okay. One caveat, paint job in basement bedroom was okay, claimed had put 4 coats of a semi gloss on and didn't look right. Replaced paint with a non gloss and looked better. Seems like semi gloss we spread too thin, resulting in uneven look. -Cabinets did get installed and looked pretty much okay unless you were looking for issues. -Put in closet in basement bedroom that was okay. -Reinstalled trim around doors okay. -Put knobs on cabinets in bath and kitchen okay. Just one hole drilled incorrectly in a door.
