I have never had an Angie’s List complaint in my life, nor have I had anyone challenge me on the amount I am charging for my services. I have been in the business of serving homeowner’s for over 30 years, My company has a sterling reputation in the community! I have a very long list of happy satisfied homeowner’s, some of them are celebrities and notable members of the community. So it is unfortunate to have my name and my company’s reputation dragged through the mud by this woman. Originally I was asked to paint her Interior, prior to doing so she signed a contract with me, part of the language of that contract stated that any changes, additions or modifications of the original agreement would become an additional charge, which she would be billed for, she signed this agreement. During the course of painting her interior, colors were changed, additions made and we even had to modify some of the other work done by the construction crew. Her home was empty and there were no personal effects in the home at all! I was referred to glowingly as “the perfect painter” many times during the course of the work. Upon completion, She paid me in full and also paid me for the additional work done above and beyond the original agreement, with out any hesitation or reservation on her part. She then promptly highly recommended me to the next door neighbor, who then hired me to paint her house, (exterior) and she signed the same agreement as the member had. During the course of painting the neighbor’s house, she asked me if I could help her with her fence, it looked like it needed to be torn down and replaced. After evaluating the fence I told her that I could restore it, and save her thousands of dollars, she was ecstatic and asked me to do so. Work on her fence began at the same time as we were painting next door. She and I at this point had a great working relationship and I didn’t feel the need to ask her to sign another contract, a good deal of trust existed between us and I felt good about her ability and willingness to pay me for any and all additional work I performed on her behalf. During this time I also, at her request, restored all the bathroom caulking, and did a complete removal and reinstallation of her shower curtain, More than a day’s work, plus materials. In light of how things were going I never billed her for any of that work. While working on the fence (two weeks of hard work!) I have never charged her for!, she shared with me how unhappy she was with Joe Mattingly, who was contracted to install new, (not replace) siding on her house, which was a dark color and the back was completed using little scraps of siding from other side jobs. She also made me aware of how unhappy she was with the painting progress, finally the painter came and worked about six hours and began spraying the siding (without pressure washing it prior!) it was covered with concrete dust! The painter Joe Mattingly hired worked about a half a day, sprayed the front and side of the house, one coat, and did a little caulking. Then he disappeared! She was unhappy with the quality of the painting and was frustrated because more than a week had passed and no one was doing any more painting (winter was approaching)! Having a heart to serve I asked her if she would like me to help her out, she said yes, so I contacted Joe Mattingly on her behalf, (she was fully aware of my actions.) Prior to this I had met Joe and allowed him to go to Porter Paints and purchase Paint for her on my account, in an effort to save her some money ! Which he did, however he only purchased enough paint and caulk to apply one coat to her house. Her house was a mess, no preparation had ever been done on the exterior, it needed extensive preparation, cleaning, caulking etc. Joe Mattingly, told me his painter was not available to finish the other half of the house, the high side and the back, I offered to clean and paint the remaining unpainted portion of the house for the sum of $800.00 labor only, since paint and other supplies were already purchased I assumed. He asked me to take over the job in his stead. I then promptly called her at work and informed her that Joe had agreed to let me assume the painting of her house, to which she responded. “That is an answer to my prayers Sunny to have you finish my house rather than this other fella she was disappointed with. It was at this point that Joe Mattingly bowed out of the job and even broke a few promises he made to herregarding the rest of the construction and the window restoration. Mr. Mattingly had told me the house was to be painted all one color with no separate trim colors to be applied. After I had completed spraying the side and back of the house, she informed me that the trim was supposed to be a custom color, and I asked her if she wanted me to go ahead and find her a color and properly prep the house and trim it out according to her expectations, she consented and I then hired a couple of more men and four men and myself spent well over two weeks working on painting and restoring the exterior of her house to her satisfaction. During that time we caulked every crack and puttied every nail, primed all the raw wood, etc, etc., painted the trim five times, two color changes, we restored her windows and replaced her screens, we restored her back porch, and deck, we purchased and added a storm door to the back deck and a screen door to the garage. We stripped and restored her storage building and painted it, we also removed and replaced sections of rotted wood soffit and trim. We did a tremendous amount of work and even did two complete color changes, I spent a day and a half buying samples, applying them to her house and awaiting her approval, she broke several appointments with me, never showed up or called me to tell me! Eventually we found her some good colors and the colors were dark and therefore it required two coats of paint to cover each time we made a color change. During the course of all the work we performed on her behalf at no time did she mention any missing items from her house, challenge us about the extent of the work we were performing, in fact she informed me that she was paying Joe Mattingly 11,000 dollars for the siding, painting, window restoration and back porch work. She asked me if that was too much, I TOLD HER YES, in light of the FACT THAT he didn’t finish the job, I offered to help her recoup some of that money from Joe, to help compensate for “us” having to do many of the things he was scheduled to do and was paid in full to do, but had either failed to do or had performed work that was far below her expectations or satisfaction. Near the end of the work we completed for hershe told me she wasn’t going to challenge Joe on anything and she would just absorb the cost herself. She contradicts herself two or three times in her report, first the interior is completed to her satisfaction and payment made in full, and then later its not. (Go figure) Then she says the Exterior is completed to her satisfaction and then later it’s not. During the final days of the work in progress, she asked me to look at her car, that it had overspray on it, I had three people look at her car and WE didn’t see any painting overspray, we did see what appeared to be road salt residue. I did not want to challenge her at this point, we just chose to disagree, and she declined my offer to have it cleaned for $100.00 saying she wanted a Ray Skillman warranty. ?? I was willing to absorb the additional $125.00 to keep the peace and bring the job to a speedy resolution. The amount due is a fair amount, it doesn’t even include all the fencework labor (two weeks worth) or the additional time I spent repairing her shower curtain rod, caulking her bathrooms, helping her find the perfect colors for her house. If you take a calculator and assume that each man was paid at least a hundred dollars per day to work restoring her house, it would easily add up to $7000.00 I HAVE CHARGED HER FAR LESS THAN THAT! The ladders remained in her yard TO assure her I would not leave the house unfinished, and winter had arrived. The amount due is actually about a thousand less than it should be, and over four months past due! It has created hardship on me and others, but we have moved on to other jobs. It is unfortunate that she has chosen to contest the amount due. I offered at one point to settle for 50% of the invoice balance, but that was not acceptable. All the other accusations made are hearsay and I won’t justify them with a response, she was treated with nothing but patience consideration and my utmost respect. We performed a tremendous service to her and strived to save her money in the process. If I was attempting to defraud her and over charge her I would of included many other things we did on her behalf, but I have not. AND WITH REGARD TO THE REMARK ABOUT WOMEN, 90% OF MY CUSTOMERS ARE WOMEN. I challenge any one to go and look at her House and tell me the quality of the work was grade D. And I have at least five people who can attest to the kind of service and the quality of the level of service she received from us. I will pursue this matter in the courts if I have to, and I have never lost in court. I would rather not have to do so, but I have no other recourse than that at this time. Some customers are eager to have the work done, and agree to things at the moment, but don’t realize at the time, how much professional equipment, materials, skill and expense are required to do so. Many Many things were added to this job above the original agreement and the price reflects all those changes and additions. All the work performed at her house is warrantied for a period of five years! Sunny Shelton-Sole Proprietor
