They are very responsive and the quality of work they do is above average. They try to be "green" in their approach with organic principles.
Description of Work: We started using them in the spring and we used them in the fall. They did a spring and a fall cleanup and in the fall we had some shrubs planted. The prices above are for the fall work.

Nathan from Dig Right In came over and discussed the project. He sent us a proposal that included planting new shrubs, etc. I felt that the 30 plants that he suggested would be overcrowded. He said that I could just move some of them as they grew. This was not acceptable, so the quote was amended to remove the plantings. The workers arrived on time, the prokect manager (which I paid $90 for on my invoice) showed up for 5-10 minutes and left. The workers didn't have the correct drawing for the brick placement, so I gave them the original drawing from the quote. Half of the retaining wall looked great. The other half had several small areas where small pieces of stone were shoved into one opening. On the other end, they cut one piece to fit the opening. The PM said that it was "creative interpretation", that's not what it looked like to me when you could pull the pieces out by hand. Either way, they came back and fixed it to my satisfaction. A week later we started to plant the plants that we purchased. As soon as we started digging, we ran into roots from the evergreens. We paid $1250 for the evergreens AND ROOTS to be removed and for topsoil and mulch. (This is a 25'x4'area). I called the PM and she said that she would send someone out to fix it. The worked told me that they just cut the evergreens down and roto-tilled it. They did not REMOVE the roots. Very upsetting considering that's what I paid for. The worker then started to chop away at the roots with a shovel. I was not happy, so the PM and the owner came over to see what was happening. The owner offered to plant my new plants and remove only the roots necessary for plant. He also offered to install the soaker hose that I purchased. In the end, that is what was done. They also brought in more mulch. I found the owner to be less than pleasant that day. The PM who was so cordial on the phone was silent and let the owner do the talking. In the end, I feel like I overpaid for what was done because the roots were not completely removed as quoted. I think the cost of planting my plants was much less than removing roots. The owner kept saying "this is the point we're at now" and "what would make you happy" and "Nathan is no longer with the company". At this point the work is done and looks fine, but it was not a good experience.
Description of Work: Removed existing evergreen trees and retaining wall. Install new retaining wall along with top soil and mulch.

Poor from the start, despite a very good experience last year. Missed appointments, showing up late, miscalculation of amount of mulch required, unwilling to live with original estimate, lower quality of plants, horribly unresponsive to rectifying problems. There were many excuses in the beginning about the partnership having dissolved, etc. Obviously the strength went with the other company.

Response from Dig Right In Landscaping Inc
In 2009, Dig Right In designed and installed a front yard infill garden that this customer was extremely happy with because it greatly improved their curb appeal. They also signed up for some maintenance work all for a total of around $6,000. Where is an honest review for this work? In early March of each year we send out maintenance renewal contracts to our customers from the previous year. We chose not to send one to this customer because our past experience indicated that they are difficult to deal with. After repeatedly ignoring their calls, the owner met with them to try and work with them. The sour attitude began and went downhill from there. They are chronic late payers and still owe $440 from services provided in early June, and they make condescending comments about employees and the company, all of which led us to suspend servicing them. In fact, we have a clause in our contract that reads: “The undersigned will treat all Dig Right In personnel in a courteous and professional manner; inappropriate customer behaviors are grounds for immediate termination of this contract and forfeiture of monies collected and materials purchased under this contract.” We tried to avoid working with this customer. Then we went out of our way to please them: providing replacement plants that they killed because they did not properly water per our written instructions; returning to the nursery to get different annuals because of their (snide) comments at no extra charge (and are still owed for this work). Due to this experience, we have strengthened our customer review policy to include the following: “Follow your instincts on determining whether to continue working with difficult customers. Upon deciding to terminate the relationship, immediately provide them with written correspondence [a form letter indicating our intention to not service them].”

We have signed the contract but the work has not been completed. The designer that came out was very professional and really talked with us about what our needs were and not just what we wanted him to quote. He wanted to know what our overall goal was and he was really easy to work with. He broke things down. He said that if we had a million dollars what would we do and then told us where we should start to make sure that we eventually got to our goal. It was a very systematic breakdown and he didn't try to oversell us. He said they weren't going to plant all these flowers because he could clearly see that we had been planting and doing all that stuff ourselves. He said that we should work in a certain direction to get to the goal we were trying to get to. He was able to break it down into smaller chunks so we could afford it; otherwise the whole project would have been through the window.
Description of Work: We got an estimate from Dig Right In Landscaping for a paver patio and paver walkway. They would remove old stuff and put in mulch.

I am SO disappointed! I'd found them on Angie's List, they're local to us, and seemed well rated. After calling and discussing what we needed done, and then faxing confirmation papers over...we only got 1/2 of what we needed! We were away for a few weeks, so wanted our lawn cut. They did that. However, we also realized upon returning home that some of our plant pots had been knocked over. In fairness, it appeared there was an attempt to rectify the situation; we puzzled for a bit before realizing the pots had been replaced, and the plants had been put in different places! So, I give them credit a bit on trying to fix the problem. However, no note, no message with apologies or explanations. We're still not 100% sure that's what happened. What's worse, I'd been told our hedge was going to get taken care of the day we were leaving. We came home to a complete jungle! Nothing had been touched. Again, no call, no explanation as to why that service (which I thought I'd made clear in my phone conversation was the real priority) was not provided. I called and left a message inquiring about the situation, and then had to call again to find out what was the situation. What I was told was that we were scheduled to get the hedge taken care of last Friday, but due to the severe storm that day, crews were called in early. I appreciate that! However, why did it take 2 weeks to get the hedge taken care of in the first place? Why not at least call us or email us and explain the delay? Why did I have to call 2 times to find out we're scheduled for this Friday? I cancelled that service and am getting another company to take care of it. Just such a disappointment. I wish this company would be more proactive with customer service and communication.

The request was for two mowing cuts scheduled and done on 6/9/10 and 6/16/10. Total charge for both cuts = $40. This remains unpaid as of 7/21/10. The mower wheel hit a pot during a turn. The customer was out of town and our workers immediately replaced it. I’m not sure a company deserving a D would have done this. Due to an oversight on our part the trimming did not end up on the work order. With all the record rain at the time I’m sure the shrubs were growing quickly. Had the task been properly recorded on the work order, it would have taken a crew of 2 about one hour for a total cost of $90. You have to imagine that their being out of town for several weeks contributed to some of the “miscommunication” at this very busy time of the year. We have a full schedule of customers with annual maintenance contracts who are extremely pleased with our service (see other objective Angie’s List reviews). With the record rains we were very busy keeping up with mowing and servicing them. Due to this experience we have changed our Maintenance Division policy to “no longer accept one-time maintenance requests and instead focus on delivering the best quality and service to customers that have signed up for annual maintenance services.”

Dig Right In Was really great! They had the lowest estimate, so I scheduled them. Stefanie, the assistant, did a great job with communicating the process. My husband spoke with the owner and he was quite helpful. The guys arrived to the job on-time - even a bit early, worked hard and finished a bit early. They were very nice and professional. Their estimate was right on and my lawn looks fabulous now.

An individual from Dig Right In responded to my e-mail within a few hours; she set up an appointment for me to receive an estimate the next day. Nathan from Dig Right In came out to speak with me; he was on time, professional, and addressed all my concerns about our garden and the specifics of the project. Though they were not able to assist me with my very last minute project and unusual request (accepting delivery and planting some plants I had ordered that would be delivered while I was on vacation), they responded to me right away and even provided me with other options. I feel extremely confident referring anyone to Dig Right In because of their professionalism and responsiveness and I will certainly consider using them in the future!!

Overall, we were very pleased with the work that Jeff did. Some other contractors came in with slightly lower bids, but we felt best with the Dig Right In approach and quality work. We had an old concrete patio that looked terrible. Jeff came in, looked over the situation, and gave us some ideas. He left us with some samples of stone so that we could pick the best one for our application. Going into the project, I had a specific plan of how I wanted the new patio to be laid. But Jeff suggested some other design ideas that we ended up going with, and I am very glad that we listened to him. So hiring Dig Right In was like hiring a landscape designer and contractor in one. The work started and finished on time and on budget (except for the extras that we decided to add on as work proceeded). Dig Right In's crew was friendly and easy to work with. In Oak Park, village inspectors can be notoriously picky. But when the inspector came over to view the work in the middle of the patio installation, he was impressed by the work being done and commented that many stone landscapers lay a much more shallow bed of limestone. And he was right - through the first two winters we have had no heaving or shifting! The patio looks amazing. It is such an improvement over what we had. We invited our realtor over to look at it upon completion and she said that the backyard went from dragging down the property to being a big selling point! Since the patio was installed, we have used Dig Right In for other yard work. I would definitely recommend Jeff and Dig Right In for any landscaping needs.
Description of Work: Dig Right In removed concrete from our existing patio and installed a sandstone paver patio in its place (approximately 200 sq ft). They also added steppers, rebuilt a top stair to the basement, replaced grass sod, and did some minor plant landscaping upon completion.

Very easy. They take time to get to know you and truly understand landscaping. They always pay attention to my lot and water, sun, etc to make a very specific recommendations that works in my yard, and for my taste and with my careful attention to budget. I look forward to trusting the long-term vision for my yard to DRI!
Description of Work: They did an amazing job on a rain garden last spring and came out to help with maintenance (and education) this spring. I am new to gardening. The rain garden is so beautiful and works perfectly. we have a beautiful water feature in one corner of our yard now after heavy rain instead of mud pit across the whole thing. Our kids love it! they came out to help me ID weeds vs perennials growing in, etc. Helped me move some plantings around and prep for spring.

Everything went very well -- from our first meetings with Jeff to discuss our problems/goals and get some initial estimates, to meeting with Freyja the designer and working to bring a plan together, to the actual installation. Freyja especially was very good at communicating with email as we went back and forth over some of the design details and changes to be made. She designed plans for both the front and back yard, but in the end we opted to only do the front this season. The crew was prompt, professional, courteous, and did a great job cleaning up after each day. When a few of the drainage details that weren't part of the landscape "beautification" plan weren't quite right after the first day, they fixed them immediately the next day. When they saw that I myself was planning to transplant a few of the hosta that they had dug up, they went ahead and did it for me without charge. The yard looks great, the basement is dry, and we are happy.
Description of Work: Removed existing plantings all around the foundation of our house. Regraded the beds to correct some drainage issues that were resulting in basement seepage (including creating a lengthy runoff swale). Extended and buried all of the gutter downspouts (again, to help drainage issues). Designed a new landscape plan for both the front and back yards, and then installed the front yard plants including 2 trees, 5 shrubs, and lots of native flowers and grasses. Also installed 3 rain barrels and 2 raised garden beds, as well as replacing about 300 sq ft of mulch in the backyard play area.

DESIGN PHASE COST $320 AND THE INSTALL PHASE COST $5170. THIS WAS A BACK YARD MAKEOVER WITH NO HARDSCAPING INVOLVED (PLANTS, BED WORK, NEW LAWN, MULCH). NOT SURE WHAT THE "MINOR ISSUES" WERE AS THIS WAS A PRETTY STANDARD INSTALLATION.

THE ONLY WORK WE DID FOR THIS CUSTOMER WAS A DESIGN. WHEN WE PUT A COST PROPOSAL FOR THE INSTALLATION, IT APPEARS THE PROJECT WAS TOO BIG FOR THEIR BUDGET. DURING THE DESIGN PHASE WE ASK: "WITH REGARDS TO MY BUDGET I PREFER TO" WHICH THEY RESPONDED "DESIGN IT ALL AND I'LL PICK WHAT TO DO BASED ON COSTS." WE MADE RECOMMENDATIONS TO ACCOMMODATE THEIR BUDGET TO WHICH THEY RESPONDED THAT THEY WOULD DO THE WORK THEMSELVES. WE REPLIED WITH A LENGTHY EXPLANATION OF HOW IT WOULD BE BEST TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION, BUT THEN WE NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM. BUT THEY LOVED THE DESIGN (THAT MUST BE WHAT ALL THE B'S ARE FOR).

All was done according to the plans until the plants were installed. The crew that installed the plants did not follow exactly the plan that the landscape architect laid out. Some plants were bunched together and looked oddly spaced. I called the architect and she came back to the site and personally supervised moving the plants around to her original specs. Overall the company was very responsive and I am happy with the completed job.

Professional from start to finish. The designer provided unique ideas that we never thought of, so that we have a very functional and comfortable back yard. The estimate was thorough and neat. The workers were skillful and thoughtful, and they did a beautiful job on time and on budget. The patio was installed in 2005 and is still amazing. They also provide customer service for our maintenance inquiries as well as periodic communications on outdoor stuff in which we have an interest.
Description of Work: Design and installation of an approximately 600 sq ft paver patio and walkway. Designed and installed stone fire pit. Designed and shaped planting beds. Planting of shrubs, ornamental grasses and Midwestern natives. Due to the quality of work this company provided on all the projects listed above, they now provide our lawn maintenance. This year I am using their Eco-friendly lawn care services. Company provided advice on water conservation by way of rain barrel installation.
