I have a small fenced in back yard at my townhome. They removed all grass, and brought in the best plants including a large magnolia bush. The project includes a walkway into the garden area where you can sit and enjoy everything around you. The entire project took a full day to complete, but couldn't be more pleased with the work. The project was done just prior to labor day 2013 and the plants are all hardy this year and in full bloom.

Excellent, professional provider overall. I even used landscapers and other properties in the past than and then skeptical going into this process on such a large scale ? however, this company is the real deal ? they are very thorough, honest, very attentive. The are prepared and have all of the women didn't know how to do the very large projects ? this is not your cheapo lawn maintenance firm ? these people are true professionals who care about getting it right. Worked with Mr. Jan-Gerrit Bouwman - is very dedicated to his job and a true professional. He was always very accessible and restarts responsive to e-mails, phone calls, text message as, and even coming out of on site multiple times throughout installation. Truly cared about making sure everything was the proper. Even after all the installation has been completed, he is very attentive insofar as following up to make sure everything is living, i.e. does not need any replacements which they guarantee for a year or more depending on item. He was earthy & gregarious, but most importantly of all, he is very knowledgeable about the plants, trees, and people that can work the best to accomplish your dream result. If you are in the market for a high-end finished product, this is the firm for you. They are comprehensive, trustworthy, punctual. And like all true professionals, they command an appropriate fee for their efforts.
Description of Work: Provided full landscaping and hardscaping of new lot purchased adjoining current property. Grading of new Lot. Tree plantings. Large Fountain installation. Installation of new brick driveway as well as installation of blue-stone patios. Slight over >$100k job all in all.

Grant & Power Landscaping tend to be a little on the expensive side but they do a very good job in planning, the quality of work is excellent, and it's easy to call to explain to the representative exactly what's needed. They give advise and have a good website for plant and design ideas.

The relationship and service started out well. Maintenance was done, though not often when homeowners were home. Because homeowners were not home, they could not easily note items that should be preserved, weeds that should be pulled, special areas to be cleaned. When the crew was hired, it was made abundantly clear that shrubs and plants were not to be pruned into little gumballs (a very unhealthy way to prune most plants), and that if plants were managed in this way, the contractor would not be hired back. This past year, the cleanup was terrible. Huge weeds were left in beds, ornamental perennials were pulled, shrubs were sheared into gumballs, sometimes removing the next years flowering wood. This coming year, several of the shrubs will not bloom due to the shearing, and the entire family is extremely disappointed with the maintenance. As the person who recommended and hired this well-known landscape firm for this family, I am embarassed. We will not be using the company again.
Description of Work: Several times a year landscape maintenance and cleanup.

Their people are very nice but I thought they are incredibly expensive and I had to get their work redone two years later because the brick work had to be re-situated and we had all out gutters buried in the ground and every single one of them have come apart and we had to repair and we had huge water issue because the way they did it. It had been fixed now but we didn't know any better at that time. I wasn't overly impressed with their company, I don't know why. They built me a cutting garden and the guy put it right underneath my spout where the dryer vent is, so I had a huge hole in my cutting garden that I can't use because the dryer vent is in to it and I think they should have known better. They did come and replace some of the things we were really upset with. I personally wouldn't know if I will use them again in the future because if somebody need them for maintenance, I imagine they are pretty good about that. They want to sell contract for lawn service and I didn't need that and I just needed my structure put in.

G and P were very professional on the phone, responsive in email and courteous in their interactions. They promptly completed the work. They had to come out a few times to fix things that weren't quite right (not enough sand in the paver joints, bricks that weren't level, etc) but they did an adequate job after I asked them to come back two times to fix them.

Description of Work: A brick paver patio was installed and landscaping was improved in immediate area of the new patio. The job required the removal of a concrete patio and the regrading of the adjacent area. Grant and power provided detailed scaled drawings for our review and willingly made changes on two occasions based on our feedback. These drawings assisted us in understanding exactly how the patio would look and how furniture and planters could be placed. Other contractors although highly rated did not offer this service which I believe is critical to the decision process. Other companies walked through a design and told us that at the time of installation they would finalize the plan by laying out a hose to show us the design. This is not the way to make a decision on a project of this type. The patio and landscaping was installed to the specifications provided and ln a very professional manner. The work crew was accommodating and they completed the job on schedule. The end project is beautiful and we have received many compliments on the work performed. My only regret is that I waited so long to make the decision to do the work. I strongly recommend Grant and Power for this type of work.

I contacted two highly rated Angie's List landscapers from my area regarding a proposed back yard project. I gave each business the very same outline of what type of work I was looking for. One business was Grant & Power. I was contacted by phone by a lady from G&P who proceeded to tell me that they, being a full service landscaping company ( she stressed this term) , could only consider jobs that lasted " at least one full day" so as not to waste gas ( they are 13 miles away from my home) , and which were worth "at least $3,000". I replied that that was probably at the high end of what I wanted to spend, to which she replied in a condescending tone, " I thought so. What you should do is look in the neighborhood newspaper for a handy man who will do the job for you". That ended that. The second landscaping company came out to see my yard the following day. The man was professional and gave me a brief but idea-filled presentation outlining what he could do with the space. After spending twenty minutes with this landscaping professional my husband and I decided to go ahead with a job that will be several thousand dollars over G&P's $3,000 minimum, and which will no doubt last more than one full day. In addition, we will probably enter into a maintenance agreement with them. Take note, Grant & Power: you lost a very nice job. You never know what a potential client might decide to do with a project until you meet with them. Of course, you have to actually give people the courtesy of an appointment to find that out.

We apologize that you had an unpleasant experience with our company. Unfortunately we are extremely busy right now and do now have the time to meet with everyone who calls us. Our landscaping consultants are working 12+ hours a day, meeting with potential clients and working with them closely to make sure that we are able to help them achieve their dreams. It would be unfair to waste both your time and our hard working consultants' time if your project did not meet our minimum requirements. While we are sad that we were not able to help you, we are glad to see that you were able to find someone who could. We wish you the best and hope that your project turns out exactly how you wanted it.

The crew that did the work were very hard-working. They properly dug a foundation to prevent any movement later on. They installed 5 steps with a bluestone cap on each. After 6 days of work, we noticed that the step were not the same height (per code) ranging from 5" to 7". We called G&P back up and they agreed this was not done correctly. Their work crew came back out for 3 days to remove the caps, sand down the mortar, and reinstall the caps. It all looks great now! They really stand behind their work.
Description of Work: We wanted to replace our front entry wooden steps and cement walkway (from the driveway to the steps) with pavers/unlock. Two other estimates that we received recommended Unilock blocks. G&P recommended pavers and mortar as this would blend more with the house. The cost was about twice the cost of Unilock which was the direction we pursued due to the expected appearance. We signed the contract and the work was started about 8 weeks later due to their busy schedule. During this period, we also requested a quote for landscaping and learned G&P increased the cost of the paver work by 30% as they mis-quoted this work. This really bothered me, but I was told repeatedly that the quote was low due to the amount of pavers required. G&P agreed to complete the work slightly higher than originally agreed.

Grant and Power sent a landscape consultant over. After I explained that I want to build in my backyard (patio two levels with a fire pit and sit walls), immediately the consultant gave me a quote of $30,000 and asked me to pay a deposit of $1000 right away. I did not have any itemized work (square footage, what type of pavers, what type of border accent, what type of lighting and how many lightings, the depth of the gravels, do they remove the tress and existing concrete,.....etc.). I am not confident if they will give me what I want based on just conversation. I declinded to pay the $1000. I asked the consultant to provide an itemized estimate with detailed description, listing everything I will get with $30,000. Five days later, I receive an email with only one message: "your patio will be $30,000 and please pay $1000". If they are getting Angie's list award and if this is their business model, I guess their customers must have blind faith with them.
Description of Work: Estimate for brick paver patio. Only $ amount and no detailed deliveribles listed. Requested $1000 deposit without any written work items. I declined politely.

Response from Grant & Power Landscaping
Grant and Power Landscaping provides all of its clients with a free on site meeting and an estimate for the work to be performed. As stated by the customer: Our representative met with her and talked about what her needs were for the brick paving work. Upon meeting with a client, reviewing their needs and giving them an estimate, we require a $1000.00 retainer to develop drawings and to proceed with the architectural part of our work. The client signs a letter of intent and puts a $1000.00 down only committing to $3000.00 of work. There then is no charge for our design work which amounts to hours of the landscape architect's time. We wholeheartedly apologize for her disappointment but we do not provide architectural drawings at no cost or without a letter of intent. For 33 years we have worked hard on our reputation and hope this will clear our good name from any negativity on your site. Thank you for your consideration.

Jan-Gerrit Bouwman was very responsive and helpful and did a good job explaining what needed to be done. The system has worked well since it was installed. We are very happy with the work of Grant & Power.
Description of Work: We hired Grant & Power to put in drain pipes to take the water from our gutters and our sump pump away from the house. In the beginning everything was great. However, we ended up parting ways because their communication was very hit or miss. Overall, we are thrilled with the results from G&P. They were honest, hardworking, accommodating, and fair. Their pricing may be a bit more than other landscapers, but they were worth every penny. We are considering having a new stone patio and some additional landscaping done next summer and G&P will likely be the contractor that we call. I cannot recommend them highly enough. We had a two-fold problem. First, our backyard had bad drainage problems. A few hours of rain would easily turn into a massive lake across our yard and around the house. The gutters were a second problem, with water pouring out directly to the foundation and into the crawl space. In the flooded "before" picture, you can see a definite standing water problem, all the way across the yard. It would normally take several days for the puddles to subside, but it would remain quite marshy in that part of the yard throughout the spring and summer. We also had an extremely bad mosquito problem due to all of the standing water. We were looking for an aggressive plan that would correct the problem. We met with Shawn from G&P and he offered us a couple of different options. One was to dig up the backyard, bring in all new drainage, and regrade the yard. In addition, all of the downspouts from the gutters would be extended underground and away from the house. This was at a cost of about $7500. The other more conservative option was to put in some drain tiles and catch basins in the backyard, reroute some of the drains to the existing sewer, and bury only the primary problem-causing gutters. Shawn assured us that option 2 would most likely take care of our problems, and we agreed to go with the less aggressive (and less costly) approach. We were somewhat skeptical that this would fix it, but relied on G&P's expertise for guidance. We were pleased that G&P did not try to sell us additional services that were not needed. Their honesty was a big factor in hiring them for the job. G&P did the work in May 2010. They took care of calling JULIE and did all of the digging and laying new drainage during one day, cleaning up so well that you could barely tell they had been there. The first rainstorm a few days later exposed their visit: as you can tell in the "after" photo, the new catch basins and drains have virtually eliminated the problem. While an all-day, heavy soaking rain will still result in some dampness, which we expected, the drains pull all the water from the surface down into the drainage system, with no visible standing water. We have already noticed that there are far fewer mosquitoes. The buried downspouts around the house have also pulled away the water from our foundation, and our sump pump seems to be running less frequently, indicating the ground beneath the house is getting less saturated during the rains.

All in all, a professional job from start to finish. Would DEFINITELY recommend!
Description of Work: Due to building of a subdivision northeast of our house (when there used to be a soyben field), we developed a major drainage issue. Audrey Wannamaker came out and worked with us to develop a plan that was attractive, resourceful and within our budget. The crew was awesome - professional, hardworking and did a beautiful job. They buried a new sump pump line, created a swale and sunk two dry wells, created an attractive "dry river bed" and redirected out downspouts. The project came in under budget and looks great. The big test will be during the snow thaw and spring rains, but I have know doubt everything will be fine. In addition, both Audrey and Scott the operations were periodically on-site reviewing the plans and progress.
