Our basement got flooded with about 8" inches of rain water because the main sump pump quit when the power went out and subsequently the battery back-up sump's batteries ran out of juice. We hired a so called profession clean-up company to pump out the water and dry the carpet, but because of their "it's us or the highway" attitude, we did not hire them remove and replace the damaged drywall, baseboards, shoes, closet bi-fold doors or utility room door. After receiving getting bids from three very reputable Angie's List companies, a friend recommenced that we contact Altmann Drywall & Painting ( BBB A+ rated but had only a partial review on Angie's List ). The owner, Joe Altmann, came out the next day and gave us a detailed explanation of and what needed to be done and what we could do ourselves to save some money. He left us with a very positive impression. We were a little afraid about what he would charge, however, because Joe made it very clear that he did not believe in cutting corners or doing a sloppy job and that for that reason they probably would not be the cheapest. We were both very pleasantly surprised a couple days later when Joe's bid came in $500.00 to $1,700 lower than everyone else and so we hired him. Man we are very happy that we did! Joey, the crew chief, arrived with his assistant, Rubin, on the scheduled day about 40 minutes late because the main highway by us was being repaved by the county...no big deal. We could not have been happier with them. They were courteous, friendly and worked in an extremely tidy, efficient and professional way. What really impressed me was that it became very obvious that they were more concerned about doing the job right and less concerned about time (keep in mind that we were paying a fixed contracted amount for the entire job). The drywall portion of the job was done over four days; one day for tear out and three for drywall installation because of the drying time needed between coats of joint compound. They carefully cleaned up the job site after each visit and took any debris with them. Incidentally, after the tear down, they brought in fans to dry the studs down to a moisture level of below 10 percent to prevent future mold growth, which a lot of contractors don't do. Another item that really impressed me was that they applied joint compound to an area of about two feet on each side of the taped joint to insure an absolutely flat appearing wall...no ugly bulges at the seams. In the three times we've had drywall done in other past houses, a 12 inch spread was the most I've seen done. After all the drywall was put up the crew applied a primer to all the new surfaces to complete their portion of the job. I did the did painting to save some money. After Joey and Rubin left, Andrew the carpenter came to install the baseboards, shoes, closet bi fold doors and utility room door. Andrew is fine young man and did a superb job. All-in-all I would rate Altmann Drywall & painting AAA+++ without any hesitation. Joe Altmann is a rare jewel among today's sea of shady contractors and workmen for he does business the old fashion way, with integrity and honesty...a man of his word. I first realized it when I asked him how much of a deposit he wanted to start the job. His answer was nothing, pay me when I'm done. He will have all my drywall and painting business in the future. We came to know Altmann through a family friend who works for the company. We contacted the Better Business Bureau to also check out the firm and the reports were good. Joe responded back to us through the BBB. Altmann is not the cheapest, but if you don't want to chance your home to amateur "shmearers," go with Joe. There''s an old saying, a cheap man pays twice and we did by originally going with an ill-advised choice. Altmann is a highly professional and experienced operation who can handle fine details and fix drywall problems. All estimates and paperwork are written out in detail so there is no mistaking what is being done or what you are paying for. Phase two will be done next month.
