Estimate/proposal given for $7000.00 for entire house, most of which is wood but about 1/4 is cement in the back of the house and side of garage. A1 Builders/David Surratt did not inform my mom of a problem with putting siding on any part of the house and began on June 1, 2010. He was paid $3500 up front. Upon completion of the wooden part of the house on June 15, 2010, Surratt told my mom that he couldn't do the concrete part of the house as siding could not be put on concrete (not that he just didn't know how to do it or didn't want to.) My elderly mom, being unfamiliar with this and trusting his word, paid the balance of $3500. After paying Surratt she learned from others that it IS possible to put siding on concrete. My mother is on a fixed income so this money came from a government loan though the USDA Rural Development. In addition to Surratt not finishing the job, he returned the unused siding that had been intended for the entire house and kept the money instead of giving my mother a refund or at least leaving the siding for someone else to finish the job. He also got upset at my mother's request to at least paint the concrete part and reluctantly had his crew (not himself) do a very sloppy paint job which started peeling off only months after it had been done. I feel my mother was taken advantage of by David Surratt due to the fact that she was elderly and alone and wouldn't know that it IS possible to put siding on a the concrete sides of the house. He was either too lazy to finish the job or simply didn't know how to do it but didn't want to lose out on any of the money he was being paid. All he had to do was just be honest. My mother sued David Surratt in small claims court for $3500 AND WON but immediately afterwards Surratt filed bankruptcy so of course he found a way to still not pay her what she was due. I don't believe his business is now called A1 Builders but have heard that he is still working under another business name. I don't know the name of it but a warning to anyone looking to have construction work done, if you find a provider with the name DAVID SURRATT anywhere connected with the business BE AWARE and I suggest you choose someone else if you want the job done!
