Roofing, Windows, Siding,

About us

Sutton Roofing & Siding was started in 1946 by Edsel & Mayme Sutton in Springfield Illinois. Edsel sold the work and Mayme ran the business. They had an installer and focused solely on Roofing and Siding. In those days, there were only a handful of colors to offer customers. The Sutton’s prided themselves on using the highest quality materials and installation available. Then, they put their name on it and offered a guarantee. A handful of the projects they did in those early days can still be seen on homes in the older areas of Springfield today. In the late 1970's, Douglas Sutton moved back to Springfield and took over the family business for his parents, Edsel and Mayme. He changed the name to reflect the expanded remodeling services. The new name was Sutton Siding & Remodeling, Inc. A marketing partner of Doug's was responsible for one of the most successful marketing campaigns in Springfield. Sutton Siding & Remodeling adopted the slogan, ""You call us, we don't call you."" That is because some key competitors at the time were dialing for dollars every evening and on weekends bothering people for appointments. The slogan worked and separated Sutton's from the vultures lurking on the phone. People still refer to that slogan today and refer to Sutton’s as simply “Sutton Siding.” Fast forward to 1995 and Douglas Sutton Jr, along with his brother Michael Sutton, took over the family business. Eventually, the duo decided to change the name to simply ""Sutton's."" The pair added a property restoration division and is recognizing a need in the marketplace to help customers after a fire or storm damage. Together, the brothers still operate the business in partnership and work in the business every day in the same office on Peoria Road on Springfield’s north side. Sutton’s has three distinct divisions. They are Exteriors, Remodeling, and Service. Sutton’s started as a Roofing and Siding company and is still the largest Roofing & Siding Company in central Illinois.

As senior citizens, it’s hard to get things done that in years past we were capable of doing ourselves. Climbing ladders to hammer Loose facia, fixing a window that was cracked, fixing a screen in a storm door thats on s roller(used to just pop the screen in and out). Little things mean a lot to keep your home updated and looking good. Curb appeal makes a difference. That being said we want to give a big five star rating to Sutton’s for being there to get all this things done for us. We are so happy with the job they did. Everything looks great. Love our new screen door, is so nice to not have duct tape holding the screen together. We can’t thank you enough. Great service from a great company. Shout out to Adam and all the other workers, job well done.

Sutton's roofed my ranch house w/attached garage in 2015. I noticed a small water puddle on the garage floor in 2020. The next Monday morning Adam was out to inspect for the source of my problem. He determined that caulk on a vent had lost its seal. He wanted a better caulk than he was carrying on his truck for the repair. He returned after lunch with the right caulk and resealed both garage roof vents. Adam texted me at 2:00 that the repair was complete. I am very pleased with Sutton's standing behind their installation work. In addition to a new roof, the 2015 job as pictured also included windows, doors, siding and interior reconfiguration.

Good professional work done, has been a few months & repair seems to have worked, I just thought the price was kind of high for about 30 minutes' worth of work; obviously I could have opted to get another bid, but Suttons was able to do the work on same day as estimate so it was very convenient.

Hired Sutton's to reroof a 35 year old two story home. Sutton's recommend 3-Tab, 25 year Comp. shingle (CertainTeed Corporation). Within a month after reroof notice water stains on ceiling in two rooms. Walked into attic, condensation dripping from ever nail protruding from roof. Everything (stuff in storage) in attic was damaged. Called Sutton's, salesman came to house looked in attic and said roof needs vents. Asked why it was not done when roof was installed he said he didn't know. Sutton's did install 5 roof vents. 10 years later roof leaks again. Called Sutton's, salesman looks at roof and said the shingle were bad and will help file a warranty claim with CertainTeed Corporation. Asked salesman if Sutton's was aware of problem with shingles from this company and he said yes. Asked why Sutton's did not notify customers about this problem. He did not have answer. CertainTeed Corporation issued a check for a pro-rated amount based on age of the roof. However, installing new shingles would be the cost of homeowner. Sutton's salesman asked if I wanted them to install new shingles; responded with, "No, thank you." Salesman: Kevin King very Professional Receptionist: I thought was rude.

Response from Sutton's
We do not have you listed as a customer. We did in fact do that roof after a tornado and that job is contracted under someone else's name entirely. You mentioned that rain leaked around a skylight the very first rain. You don't mention that we came out and fixed it immediately. You do reference that the repair lasted nine years however. Another bit of key information is that we always recommend replacing the skylights when a new roof is installed. When customers want to retain the existing skylights, this can be an issue. If you do not replace the skylights, is it reasonable to expect the roofing contractor to warranty someone else's work and products? Another point of consideration is that only half of the roof on the building was done. Again, we do not have you listed as the person who hired us so I am not sure what your position is in this. Our workmanship is guaranteed for five years. Our roofing products are guaranteed by the manufacturer for varying links of time. Like in any industry, you can purchase an extended warranty. There is no warranty on existing skylights that were installed by someone else however. Your issue is flashing or caulking around an old skylight and not the actual roof. That is a very common issue. We wish you the best moving forward.

Hopefully, you were able to find a contractor that met your needs. While you found the pricing to be higher than you are comfortable with, we can assure you on the quality of our products because we only use the best. The products we use are rated by a third party and we can back up our claims as far as the warranties that we offer versus some of our competitors. We will be glad to come out again in the future if you find yourself needing an additional estimate on new products.

My garage's vinyl siding was melted on the right side because of a neighbor's fire November 9. My insurance claims specialist did send them their estimate what it would cost to do the job before November 17. Sutton's man Ed came by to create their estimate November 17. My siding had stopped from being made 10 years ago. I knew Ed would have to find a close match but not that it would take days, and I did call the office. Sutton's man Ed did come by with siding samples finally on December 9 for my husband and I to look at. I finally called their office to sent me an estimate by email December 11. My insurance estimate which they were fully aware of was $1080.93 and they decided to charge $1460.00. Sutton's is not new to this process. They know they have to prove to insurance why more cost, but wanted me sign a contract without going through this process costing me more in the long run. I was considerate through the whole process with Sutton's if not naïve. I should have dropped them considering their lack of interest in my job for 15 days. I am upset that they could handled it more professional and just done the job. They told my insurance claims specialist they would show why it would have cost more he is still waiting for that paperwork.
Description of Work: After an initial meeting to do an estimate did not get back to me for days even after receiving estimate from insurance then charged more then insurance estimate. Would not clarify extra charges to insurance. Wanted me to sign contract without validating extra contract charges.

The work was well done, but took excessively long to finish, due to delay getting the doors needed to complete the product from the supplier. What was supposed to be a 5 week project took more than 3 months. Sutton did make a modest reduction in the price, due to the delay. They also tried to get the same from the supplier, but were not able to.

!This is NOT a reliable contractor to deal with. We asked them for an estimate on fixing our drywall and ceiling from water damage. They gave us an estimate but said we had to give them $1,000 right away before they would do anything so we did. Week after week they would put us off and after 3 weeks they told us that it would be at least 6 more weeks before they would even start - and this was AFTER they took our $1,000 and never told us about any type of delay! They rarely got back to us, wouldn't send us any updates on our estimates and refused to send anything via email (always in person) but the person who was supposed to meet us always forgot the time or just made excuses to cancel. Needless to say, we cancelled. Do NOT hire

Response from Sutton's
Our inquiry date was 7/20/15 and our notice of cancellation to your husband was on 8/12/15. I apologize that we were not able to prove to you and your husband that Sutton's is a reliable contractor. I was not aware of your unhappiness with the project as most of our communications have been with your husband. Our process for any job is to collect a down payment before we begin in order to cover the initial expenses. This is actually required by the State of Illinois for a contract to be considered valid. In your specific case we asked for a $1,000 down payment. This is what your deductible was, which typically is the easiest route for a down payment when doing a home insurance claim, which this was. Your husband asked if we could put this $1,000 on a credit card, which was no problem at all. However, since we never began this project the credit card was never ran and you were never charged $1,000 at any point. This was made clear to your husband via phone on the cancellation date of 8/12/15, five days before you had written this review. One thing that prolonged the process in your case is that your husband wanted to take care of many of the repairs himself (which is perfectly fine, it just takes a little more time). The reason this prolongs the time frame to get started is that it requires us to write two estimates (one to get an agreed price/scope of work with the insurance company, and another price/scope that does not include the work you are doing yourself, because it would be unfair to charge you for these items). Another item that caused the final estimating delays is that many items of the work to be performed were being completed and changed by your boyfriend without our knowledge or any documentation. This made it hard to keep up on what exactly we needed to truly estimate for your project. I apologize that you were not aware of this. What we did is we estimated the time that it would take for your husband to do the items he planned to complete himself, and then tried to schedule our guys to come to the jobsite once he was completed. In the past, when we have had customers do their own work, we have ran into issues where it is not fully completed before it is our turn to come on the jobsite, causing unexpected delays to the project, as well as numerous other client’s projects that could have been scheduled in that time frame. This has caused us to give an extra period of cushion to homeowners completing parts of projects themselves. I apologize that you were not aware of this. I would like to make you aware of the fact that it was Sutton’s who decided to walk away from this job. You were notified on 8/12/15. After reviewing the pros/cons of moving forward with this, we decided that we were not comfortable completing this project. We rarely walk away from a job as it is usually a chance to grow our business. I hope that you are able to find a contractor that better fits your needs for this project.

We had numerous shingles on the south facing side of our house failing; there was not water damage yet. We called 4 separate roofing companies to get quotes; Sutton's was the one we ultimately chose for the customer service they presented and the 50 year warranty, even though they were more than $2,000 than any other quote. The salesman was great to work with and went out of his way to help us with the insurance claim for wind damage. During the signing of the contract, I brought up that our claims adjustor mentioned we should have our chimney looked at as it may need some tuck pointing. I asked Ben, our salesman, if Sutton's had someone they have very good experience with; he said yes and that he would ask him to come look at our chimney. The following week, I called Ben again to check to see if they planned to start the room the following week as I was given a 2 week estimate to begin the project and also to check on the status of the Mason. He clearly had forgotten to ask the Mason come look at our chimney- but this was fine; he assured me he would have him come look at it during the roof replacement. They were actually ahead of schedule and thus they asked if they could start our roof on Friday, May 22. We had plans to be gone the weekend so I discussed this with the contract manager, and he assured me that it was fine for us to be gone as he would oversee the project. I also told him it was perfectly fine to leave the dumpster until Tuesday morning to have picked up, even though the project would be completed by Saturday at the latest since it was Memorial day weekend. When my husband I arrived home on late Monday night, May 25, we found 3 packages of shingles, a large broken container of nails (I picked up 22 nails from our yard), several rolls of the Tiger Paw roof protection, a box of trim coil, another sealed box of something, several metal tubes, and several tarps and other random equipment left on our lawn- not the concrete driveway, the sidewalk, or the deck- the actual green grass lawn. I immediately e-mailed the salesman as he was the only person at the office that I had e-mail. The following late morning I received the following e-mail back: Hi Katrina, I apologize for the state of your yard when you returned home. I think what happened was a breakdown in our completion scheduling. Normally, the roofing foreman picks up the leftover material from a jobsite immediately after the job is completed. He also inspects the completed roof and collects the final payment from you on that visit. For whatever reason, he did not come by to pick up the material. Do you have any messages from our production department to meet with you to go over the completed job? I'm going to check with the roofing production manager now and have him call you. Ben Sales Consultant I additionally e-mailed him with the fact that I found numerous nails in our driveway and old tar paper and shingles scattered throughout our yard; I never received a response to that e-mail. When the project manager called it was just to say that he was going to have the dumpster picked up that afternoon and no mention of any issues that I discussed with Ben. Additionally, when I came home that day from work, the dumpster and left over supplies were gone but there were still old shingles and tar paper in our yard. It has been 4 business days since I informed this company of the issues I had with them, and I still have not received any further follow up, nor have I heard anything from the Mason they were supposed to send out. The only positive thing I can say at the end of the project is that the new roof looks nice, and thus far, no leaks.

I apologize for our Memorial Day weekend mix-ups. It was an error in communication as we typically do pick up any left over materials upon the job's completion. However, since we completed this on a Saturday and Monday was a holiday we did a poor job of discussing how this would be completed. As for not returning, e-mails and leaving nails and debris in your yard, I agree 100% that this is unacceptable and will make sure that it is dealt with. We typically try and pride ourselves on professionalism, responsiveness, and cleanliness which unfortunately did not happen here. Then she came out for the siding to finalize the colors. So there was time spend on that. She was very professional. Then the guys came out and unloaded. It was 10 days of work. They unloaded some stuff in the garage to keep it in good shape. I had both horizontal siding on the bottom and then vertical going up. They had to work with 2 different colors. It was different from what they normally worked with. They did the job. They were very courteous and professional. It looked very good. The colors were a lot brighter. I got compliments on it. The sales person was easy to work with. She's fairly new at her job.
Description of Work: Sutton Siding & Remodeling. I had the siding done this spring.

Response from Sutton's
Thanks for the review [Member Info Removed]. Julie was your sales rep and she has been with us for almost a year (still very new for us). We think she's been great with taking her care of her clients and I'm glad the you feel the same way about your experience with her. I think that the siding turned out great with the new windows from the pictures I've seen. Thank you for choosing Sutton's again!
