Overall our experience with Smith General Contracting was very positive. While Smith wasn't the least expensive roofing contractor by far, we chose them for the quality of materials used, their willingness to negotiate price and their warranties provided. We also heard word-of-mouth recommendations from other satisfied customers of theirs. Also, unlike ANY of the other companies we considered, Smith required NO deposit whatsoever; you pay when they are finished and you're satisfied with their work. They were extremely neat an orderly throughout the entire process and swept up what little mess was left on our deck.I would loved to have given them straight A's across the board but I had to give them a B for professionalism simply because Mr. Smith made a few loud negative remarks about other roofing contractors while doing our job. We feel those comments would have been better discussed in the privacy of Smith's own offices.

I contacted this company through Angie's List and they responded the next day with an email to set up an appointment. The estimator Seth was professional and personable. He measured the roof, provided information, answered my questions, and printed out the estimate from a laptop/printer in his truck. He was efficient, yet patient with my many questions. He suggested that I have my brick chimney removed and install a furnace pipe in its place also. His estimate was in the middle of the five I received. I was comfortable with the price and the detail in the estimate. The company uses CertainTeed brand shingles and after researching them it was the brand I wanted to go with. I was ready to choose this company, but decided not to after speaking to a contractor I knew through church who had reservations about the company. I called and spoke to the owner Gary Smith about my concerns. I appreciate that he listened to my concerns and answered my questions, however, I still felt uncomfortable using the company. I also checked the company's license online and found that it was fined last year. I was hesitant to take the chance as I have a limited budget and can only do the job once and don't want any surprises that cost me more than the estimate I has given. If I had more time to decide, I may have asked for references and called them for additional information, but I needed to make a decision right away as my roof is currently leaking.

After no contact for 2-3 weeks, I called Mr. Smith. He said that his estimator was not in the office and he would check with him when he got in and call me back. One week later I had heard nothing so I called Mr. Smith again and he said we certainly needed to discuss the job so we were all on the same page as to what needed to be done. He asked if my wife and I would be home the next (Friday) morning and I said we would be. We agreed that he and his estimator would call us. We received no phone call Friday. After no phone call, I finally called his estimator directly. His estimator seemed surprised, telling me he was under the impression that the company had become busy and was no longer interested in doing the job. After I expressed surprise, given the statements of Mr. Smith the past two weeks, he said he would speak to Mr. Smith and they would call me. It is now approaching two months later and I still have not had a return call. They did an excellent job on my chimney, which hasn't leaked a drop since they fixed it. They deserved the "A" review I gave them for it. However, because of this experience, I can no longer recommend them.

I obtained three estimates for this job. I was impressed by Smith?s professionalism and their honesty about what would be required. They did not attempt to lowball us in order to get the job, and then add in higher costs later. Another contractor attempted to persuade us that we might be able to get insurance money to cover part of the cost, though we knew this to be very unlikely. He also seemed to inflate his estimate accordingly. Another issue was the fact that we wanted shingles that would qualify for the energy tax credit. The other two estimators insisted that they would be much more expensive than the other shingles. Smith gave them to us for the same price. When they came to do the job, which as you can imagine was enormous, they brought their entire crew. On the first day they stripped off all of the old roof, got on the new decking, and put on the initial underlayer. I believe they would have completed the job in one day had it not started to rain that afternoon. However, they finished by shingling the next morning with a half crew. The men were all full-time, year-round, permanent hires, and it showed. Their skills were amazing. They did the job fast and well, and they cleaned up after themselves. Where a little extra improvement was needed, they did it. I noticed after they left that they had added extra spikes on some of the gutters to keep them from sagging. And they painted all the roof protrusions to match the shingles. In a word: IMPRESSIVE.

Great service. Called one afternoon and the job was completed by 11:30 the next morning. Brought several experienced workers and completed the job quickly and professionally. Couldn't be happier.

While the price may seem a little high, I assembled multiple bids and Smith General Contracting offered the most comprehensive solution to my concerns. We had water leaking in to our house, and Smith came out the day after I called them to provide an estimate. Furthermore, Smith was able to complete the work on our house within 5 days of my initial call. I called on a Monday morning, and the work was completed on Friday of the same week. They brought out their entire team (approx. 10-14 workers) to complete the work timely and efficiently. I was extremely satisfied with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the team. I would recommend Smith to anyone in need of roofing/ chimney repair services.

We recieved an estimate on Monday, August 2, 2010, and the job was completed before 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010. The work was professionally done. It is impossible to tell that the fans were not originally with the house. They cleaned up everything before they left, and our upstairs is definitely cooler. I would not hesitate to call Smith General Contracting for anything. In fact, we have asked them to provide us a quote to replace our old doors. We appreciate Seth's timeliness--not only with the install, but the estimate and professionalism. (We had been goofing around with someone else for two months, and Smith General Contracting had it completed--start to finish in five days!!)
