I hired Mecurio Roofing to replace roof and gutters on a one story house. The roofers did a nice job with the roof replacement, except the old gutters should have been removed from the house before the new roof was put on. The gutter crew removed the old gutters and proceeded to install new gutters. In the process they damaged the new roof on 2 sides. They folded over the starter course of shingles, nailed them to the fascia, installed the gutter apron on top of the starter course, instead of under it, and then shoved extra pieces of gutter apron under the first course of shingles in between each shingle sheet. When they got to the 3rd side they realized their mistake and finished the 3rd and 4ths sides correctly. They did not go back and correct the 1st and 2nd sides already done incorrectly. Many 1st course shingles were torn in the process. The gutters were not positioned as we told the crew we wanted them. One downspout was directed incorrectly and one leaked. The gutter crew boss was confused, instead of getting clarification he just did the job wrong. We were promised a first rate job and what we got was a disaster. Mercurio's answer to the problem was to take down the gutters and walk away. He refused to fix the damage done to the roof. Contrary to his adds, customer satisfaction is NOT important to Mercurio. I had many proposals to choose from and I am so sorry I went with Mercurio. Save yourself a lot of grief and don't make the same mistake.

In the complaint the owner states the fact there was damage to 1st course and starter course shingles during gutter installation on two sides of house, this I don’t deny. We were ready to make any and all repairs done to the shingles caused by the gutter install as we had all necessary material on site to do repair and the owner knew that. While going over their concerns, which could have easily been resolved except for, and I quote “The gutters were not positioned as we told the crew we wanted them.” This is what I have to take issue with and to explain I’ll start from my initial contact with complaintant. I was asked to quote on removal of existing roof and gutters and new replacement of both. The old gutter system had only two downspouts to handle a large amount of gutter length and water volume. I proposed adding two more downspouts, four total, to better handle the volume of water and stated this in contract. The owner called me back with questions regarding the additional of downspouts and requested lowering the downspout count to three because she did not want to look at a downspout on one side of the house. A Change to the contract was made to satisfy her request, contract was signed and we scheduled work. On the start date of the gutter work my crew and I were told by complaintant’s husband that he wanted the majority of the water drained to the two downspouts that were original to the existing gutter layout but still install the third downspouts. THAT IS ALL THAT WAS SAID ABOUT POSITIONING OF NEW GUTTERS, AND THE OWNER WAS HOME ALL DAY WATCHING THE CREW INSTALL THE GUTTERS. CREW LEADER AT COMPLETION DID A WALK THRU FOR ACCEPTANCE AND WAS TOLD HE HAD NO ISSUES AT THAT TIME. Owner called the office late in the afternoon the day the gutters were completed and complained about the damaged starter and first course of shingles. I promptly went to meet with him to address his concerns. Upon my inspection I did find damage done to the shingles in question, and also for some reason the owner had blocked off the third or the additional downspout, which I thought to be strange. Coincidentally there was rain in the forecast for the entire next day, so I told him we would be back the following day for repairs. It did rain all day like the forecast predicted and we came back the following day for repairs. Initially my crew set up ladders and noticed the gutters to be completely drained even with the owner’s blockage of the third downspout, so the gutters drained to owners specs and were completely functional. This is when things turn unreasonable, the owner now wanted the gutters to be removed and rehung to align with the bottom of the fascia board because he did not like the look of the exposed bottom of fascia board. I told him not only was this unreasonable the gutters need to be pitched correctly for proper drainage. Following the bottom of fascia board would not allow this. His reaction was “that is how the old gutters were installed and they worked fine.” Contrary to the old gutters working fine my gutter crew got soaked with standing water in the old gutters when removing them, so they did not drain properly. Well upon telling the husband that was an unreasonable request, he told me he would talk with his wife and come up with a solution, so we left job site waiting for an answer. After two weeks of calling and getting no answer, leaving messages with no return call, I received a letter in the mail stating again they wanted the gutters removed and rehung to align with bottom of fascia board or we can come back and remove them completely and they will have another contractor do the gutter work, but they wanted us to still repair the shingles. I called them back and told her that it is very unfortunate we could not resolve this issue but we will be there the next morning to remove the gutters, without any payment for the new gutters, but no other work will be done if this is the only way to resolve this issue. The owner then agreed to schedule removal of the gutters the following day. Before we removed the new gutters we took multiple pictures of the gutters and the damage that was done to the shingles. I would like to attach these pictures to show Angie’s List member what the roof and gutter job looked like before we could not come to a resolution, but that is not your policy.

I was pleased with their work. They showed up when they said they would and were done when they said they would be. They were clean and there have been no leaks.
