Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning

They are very responsive, they are very trustworthy, and they get the job done quickly.

The estimate was careful and detailed, with full explanations. The work was performed as scheduled, complete in one day. The company initiated a follow-up visit to start up the furnace and the contract includes the first year of service.

Shavitz is my on-going heating company. As usual, the technician was exactly on time. The scheduler did a poor job of understanding and scheduling the job, so the tech was not prepared for scope of the work. Brad, the boss, came right over and the two of them worked it out and were still able to do the work that day. All of the Shavitz techs are great, but Tom was even better. He worked hard all day, did not spend any time running around for materials and did a great job. The price took me aback, but then plumbing work always does. As usual, you get what you pay for and I got the best.

We've been using them for many years. They are professional and very quick to respond. I think they are interested in doing a quality job.

I called Shavitz and they couldn't give me an appt for 3 weeks. I had just moved into the house and wanted to have the furnace checked before I used it do to it's age and the recent history of water in the basement. James came out and was punctual and very professional. He cleaned the furnace, reviewed with me the various furnace parts and their condition. He did recommend replacement, but didn't do a hard sell - which I appreciated. I would definitely use James again, but won't use Shavitz due to the time lag for appointments.

Excellent. Eric arrived at specified time, diagnosed problem and repaired on the spot. We spoke before he arrived about the probable cause, which enabled him to pack onto his truck parts likely needed. Also, Linda, who made the appointment, asked relevant questions and provided me an estimate of the repair cost, which included $150 emergency service charge, plus package price for labor and parts of $300 (-$20 Angie's List coupon).

The technician was courteous, knowledgable, well dressed and educated. Not all characteristics I normally associate with AC technicians (from experience with 3 other providers before my problem was accurately diagnosed and repaired). THe air conditioning system was evaluated and recommendations were made with options to replace the air conditioner alone or replace furnace and air conditioner. A variety of air conditioners with different efficiencies were offered and the pros and cons of each explained. They only work with Carrier so no alternative to that company is available. The house was measured to evaluate the performance needs of my house. The broken air conditioner was oversized for my needs so the new one was smaller and therefore less expensive. The day of, I was gone and had to have a house sitter supervise. According to her the work was done quickely and cleanly. A water valve was inadverently left off and the technician talked her through turning it back on as soon as the problem was discovered.

The office manager was sweet and very responsive. Everyone was punctual, quick with the job, explained the work, and very professional.

They talked to me extensively over the phone about their work, which some places are not willing to do. Their location is very close to me and their price is very competitive. I called them because my gas prices have been higher than in previous years. Their engineer called me back and after much conversation said that the probable cause was that the gas company's meter wasn't set properly. I appreciated their taking the time to talk with me.

Why is it always the hottest day of the year when you notice that your air conditioning just isn't working and while the thermostat is set at 73, the temperature in the house is 84 and climbing? And why is it always a Sunday? When I realized that the air conditioning wasn't working, I selected Shavitz from Angie's List because of its proximity to my home and its high ratings. I called about 3 p.m. on Sunday and got an answering machine, but I received a call back within 30 minutes. The dispatcher asked whether I wanted a service call on Sunday (at an overtime rate) or wanted to wait until Monday. She clearly explained the cost structure, which is based on a flat rate for diagnosis and then flat rates for each element of the service that is required (no hourly rates). I asked for a technician to come out on Sunday. I got a call about 5 p.m. from Eric, who was just leaving a job in downtown Chicago. By 5:45 he was at my house. Eric was friendly, but professional. He quickly got to work, checking the entire air conditioning system. Initially, he found a blown fuse. After telling me what the cost of the repair would be, he replaced the fuse, only to have it blow again immediately on starting the system. He subsequently found two shorts where excessive voltage had flowed into the low voltage wiring of the system. Eric explained my options in terms of replacing only the defective part of the air conditioning unit or the entire system. Because the system was old and I wanted something more energy efficient, I opted to replace the entire system. Eric helped me select an appropriate system for my home and wrote up the order. He told me I should expect a call on Monday morning to schedule the installation, probably for that day. When I had not received a call by 10 a.m. on Monday, I called Shavitz. The dispatcher was very apologetic and checked on the status of my order. She advised me that service people had already departed Shavitz to pick up my new unit and would be at my home shortly to install it. The installation was handled by two workers. Both were very professional and efficient. After they began I asked how long the installation would take--they told me 5 to 6 hours. Five hours later they had installed the new equipment, disposed of my old air conditioning equipment, explained how to operate my new thermostat, and were on their way. This is exactly how service is supposed to be--prompt, professional, and friendly. I plan to use Shavitz for all my heating and air conditioning needs in the future.

I found them to be very professional, upfront and appreciated their honesty because they provided all the information that I needed. They explained everything to me very well and also told me that If they visit me they will have to bill me for that visit. They also gave me some good suggestions about the unit parts and how to prevent some of the problems.

In January we were told someone would call us when it was nice enough outside to finish the work. No one called and it reached 80+ one day so we called. They put us on the schedule and had to reschedule once because of rain. Then they rescheduled AGAIN because they didn't realized they needed to have 2 guys scheduled for the job. The day they came out was right before Memorial day and they gave us a 9-12 window which was great because we were heading out of town in the afternoon. When 11:45 rolled around and no one had called to say they were on their way, we called. We were informed that they had us down for an 11am-2pm window which we would have never agreed to. They ended up getting there at ~12:15 and it took them 2 hours which was longer than I expected. The work was done well and Eric and his partner were very polite. They even wear booties to protect my floor as they go in and out - which I really appreciate. And they don't mine my crazy old dog wandering in their way every once in a while - even thought we try to keep him out of the way.

Very nice people to work with. Punctual, friendly, helpful, honest about whether or not we should replace the boiler. Didn't think we would get our money back since we don't plan to stay in the house over 5 years.

Great, would highly recommend. While the technician was there, he told me it was a flat price structure and not by the hour (or quarter hour) as many others charge. He also was helpful in answering questions I had regarding regular maintainence issues and he quite helpful with his advice.

Early AM late November, I found the furnace not working properly & in need of immediate attention. A frigid forecast of extreme temp was expected. I phoned Shavitz and was instantly put through to a technician. The situation was assessed in an expedient manor. Although we had the choice of a repair on the furnace, we decided not to chance it. The furnace was 20 year old and we had been meaning to schedule a replacement. We had a new furnace in 2.5 days.

They found an igniter that was wearing out. I have used them before and they have always done a good job. They always wear protective shoes and they clean up after themselves.I will use them again.

Their first technician was little miffed that another heating person was already working on our problem, but seemed to know what he was doing and was courteous enough. He also failed to give us a receipt, which we didn't realize until after he left. The second technician was very pleasant, helpful and seemed competent although the situation did not really test his heating equipment knowledge. Overall, we were happy with the service Schavitz provided and would call them again.

More inexpensive, much more courteous service than all the others I have worked with over the last ten years in my area(Winnetka): Murray, Killian, Cahill.

They were very clean when they were here working. They did a very good job too. They showed up on time to do the work. They were very courteous when they were here.

I have always been really impressed with whomever answers their phones. They are very professional and they have even gotten back to me on an estimate on a part. They are very helpful and quick to get someone out. The workers are always nice and pleasant. I really like that they always wear paper booties over their shoes when they come in. They clean up without a trace that they have been there. I really appreciated how respectful they are of my home.

Service was excellent. My 10 year old a/c unit hadn't been serviced in 6 years and while it was working well, I thought It would make sense to have it serviced. The repairman came out and felt really bad that I needed all of the services noted above; when he was really just coming to do routine maintenance. He informed me that my a/c unit was improperly installed under a deck that has less than 2 ft of clearance. The recommended space above an a/c unit is 4 ft so that hot air can get out of the system. My unit was working double time because of the hot air being recirculated back into the unit. He took some measures and determined that I had too much freon and was really stressing my compressor. He removed some freon (which costs a lot because of disposal) and also added a starting booster so my compressor didn't have to work so hard to start and run. Apparently over stressed power grids in the city don't supply ample power to start the a/c up without stressing the compressor. The guy was very knowledgeable and gave me a break on the services as well as my fall furnace cleaning. The best part was what he found in my furnace...it was making quite a bit of noise and was off balance and shaking. He stuck his hand in the air exchange and pulled out some dust balls and now my furnace is almost silent (who knew a piece of dust could make such a difference)! I think the company does good work for a decent price and will use them as long as I am in Chicago.

They had some great people out here! They were very careful to not break the wall to get to the pipe. There were 3 guys, and they were fabulous! I use them every winter to check my heating unit.

It went well. The workers were efficient and friendly but not too friendly, and they did their task without fanfare. Also they refused a tip at the end. That really surprised me! The workers from our previous company never said "no" to a tip.
