I called Shavitz to schedule a cleaning of my heat and AC as well as get an estimate to repair my 4 zone system. They were very quick to sign me up for 2 per year service package and schedule a home inspection for the zoning issues. The guy came out on time and was very professional in his appearance and explanation of the issues. It took 4 days to write up the estimate which seemed a bit long and when it finally arrived it was roughly double a previous estimate I had. His estimate was just a single number so I repeatedly requested an itemized invoice rather than lump sum however all he wanted to do was argue that my other estimate couldn?t be accurate (despite the fact I had line items for every piece of equipment, materials and labor) In the end all he would give after several requests was one number for labor which equated to $130 an hour and one number for everything else. I would consider getting multiple quotes before you have them do any work as its obvious they try to take advantage of customers that don't do their homework. UPDATE - I had a second estimate done for the work which came inline with my first (roughly 1/2 of the Shavitz number). I also got a call from Shavitz asking me to take this review down. Their rep explained that he didn't provide a detailed estimate because "no one does that". I guess the other two detailed estimates I got don't count. As for their response that the other guys were using lesser materials or cutting corners....completely false as they detailed exactly what thermostats and controllers would be used unlike Shavitz. It is obvious to me they don't want to improve their own service and instead try to focus on tearing down the competition.
Description of Work: I wanted a spring cleaning of my AC/Heat and estimate to restore the 4 zone system that was deactivated by the previous owner.

Response from Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning
I want to thank you for giving Shavitz HVAC the opportunity to work with you on your zoning project as well as posting feedback on Angie’s List. I can understand your frustration when comparing different proposals from different companies, especially when there is a wide variation in pricing for what appears to be the same work. I will not comment as to how other companies come up with their pricing as I’m not privy to how they operate their business but I can shed some light on how we operate. As a 4th generation company that is over 100 years old, we understand what is takes to install a safe, efficient, and reliable system that will function properly. Our technicians receive over 70 hours of continued training each year so that they know how to do the job correctly and efficiently and aren’t learning by trial and error in your home. These technicians are also long-term employees and are not subcontractors, meaning they may have a higher hourly salary than some other companies. These employees have families and we give them a good wage and benefit package so they can provide a decent living for their family. This enables us to provide a high quality, extremely well trained long term technician that can provide a high level of service to our clients. Furthermore, Shavitz HVAC knows how to operate a company that will still be in business so that we will be available to help you with any warranty or service issues that could arise in the future. I encourage you to open a phone book that is 5 years old and see how many heating and air conditioning companies are no longer in business – you will be surprised. Many of these businesses failed to account for rising costs such as fuel, insurance, taxes, etc. and, unfortunately, have left thousands of clients without a service company to warranty the work they installed. It’s also important to note that while proper pricing does require a profit, it must be fair. Shavitz HVAC operates on single digit profit margins so we are financially stable enough to cover our costs and service our customer base, but in no way, over-charging our clients. In this particular case, I’m not sure if different equipment or materials were used, if the scope of work was different, if some corners were cut, or if the other quotes were not priced properly. I can say that our proposal did include an extremely reliable and effective Honeywell zoning system with an electronic bypass damper installed by highly qualified technicians from a company that will be around to provide service in the future. If you would like to discuss any of this or anything else in the future, don’t hesitate to call. Sincerely, Bronson Shavitz

We got a few bids from different companies on Angie's List. (Shavitz is our seasonal furnace inspector, so we already knew they do great work. As a side, we've tried a variety of companies for the seasonal checks, and Shavitz is always more thorough and detailed than anyone we've ever seen. They take pride in what they do.) All bids for the new HVAC were similar in price, but Shavitz offered a quieter Carrier condenser than the Trane installer. Brad from Shavitz came to our house, walked us through the process, discussed all our options and provided a detailed quote with all options itemized. He was great: friendly, professional and detail oriented. This was a 2 day project - and the installers were prompt, courteous and smart. They hauled a** both days (didn't seem like they ever took a break!) and clean up was immaculate - you'd never know they were even there. We are so glad we chose Shavitz to do the job - they rock!
Description of Work: Installed new 2 stage furnace in a single family home (our old furnace was 22 years old), outdoor condenser for air conditioning, (we didn't have central air before), ran electric and new pipes along the outside of the house to connect the furnace and outdoor condenser, installed a new return in the bedroom, wrapped and insulated all existing ducts in the attic, and reconfigured the supply vent to the new furnace to enter the unit in the right place. They hauled away the old furnace and all debris.

They arrived on time and performed a complee check of furnace as we had just moved in. They were courteous and, as I am writing, I cannot remember the exact amount but their fees were standards for the area of Chicago's N. Suburbs. I would hire them again.
Description of Work: The furnace was not heating the downstairs areas. They performed a complete check of the furnace and rectified the problem.

Furance wasn't cycling properly -- ignitor and gas would come on, gas would ignite, then blower would come on and furnace would cycle off. This would happen 3-4 times then it would stop trying (fail safe or something). Furnace is +10 years old and Shavitz had previously replaced control board 2 years prior when similar problem was happening. I tried replacing the thermostat, but this didn't work. Turns out this time the flame sensor was dirty. Furnace was cleaned by technician and worked fine after that and continues to work. Total cost was $150 or so for service call plus cleaning (which I thought was a bit expensive, but not too bad). I also then was convinced to sign up for a 1 year service agreement which includes a spring (A/C) and fall (furnace) maintenance and a discount on emergency calls for another $150 or so -- I didn't feel pressured or anything, just seemed to make sense given the nature of the current problem, the fact everything hadn't been serviced for a couple years and the age of the unit.

The experience with them was great. They put paper down on all the hardwood floors. They put booties over their shoes when they walked in the house. They made sure that everything was clean and swept up when they left. The work was good. The cost of their service was somewhere around $3500. Their price was good. I will use their services again in the future.

I found them on Angie’s List. I spent about $100 on the job. The guy was really professional. I thought he was very thorough because I had got it done before by others and they would only stay a while. This guy stayed for longer time. He gave me some really good recommendations. I could sit and talk with him. He gave me suggestions. The furnace is okay now. I thought he was very honest. He could have recommended a lot of work to be done since the furnace is old, but he did not do that. They had told me beforehand how much the job would cost, which was $99. When the guy came out, I told him that I would round it off to $100. I was really impressed with the fact that he had stayed and did a thorough job. He stayed within the price and he came out on time. I am planning to call him again because he gave me suggestions. The suggestions were not something that I had not heard before but he went a little in depth and gave me reasons for the same.
Description of Work: I used Shavitz Heating & Air Conditioning, a few weeks ago. They checked the furnace during that time.

After our old (early 80s) boiler died in the spring, I got several companies to come out and give us bids on replacing it. Some only wanted to go with a regular cast iron boiler, some recommended a newer high efficiency system. As the heating companies made their proposals we decided that a modern HE system was going to be the way to go. The higher initial cost will take a long time to pay off, but the maintenance should be less (our old one was not trouble free), and there are operational advantages; for one thing the new boiler's controls are very sophisticated and can make slight changes to keep the house consistently warm rather than cycling from full heat to off. Also we wanted to get part of our first floor, which is over a crawlspace and on a different kind of radiators, put on a separate zone as it should have been when we had the radiators installed years ago...it had never worked well. Three companies gave competitive bids proposing a similar system with the Triangle Tube 'Prestige' HE boiler. From my research this was definitely the best boiler to go with. All three companies would likely have done a done a good job, presentations were very thorough and professional, though there was about a $1000 spread between the three. FWIW the companies really pushing the old type boiler were not impressive. We went with Shavitz for a few reasons: their bid was lowest or next to it; sales rep Brad was extremely thorough in his descriptions and responsive to phone calls and emails, and all contact with the company gave us a lot of confidence in them. Also of course their ratings on Angie's are very positive, and another contractor we were working with had good things to say about them. The work was done as described, when promised, with no problems. The installers were polite and neat; they cleaned up after themselves and the old equipment vanished without a trace. When done they showed me the controls, and as we got a surprise cold snap in April I got to see how well the new system worked. It is great! Really shines on days that are cool or only mildly cold, as the system can supply just enough heat--something a conventional system can't do. And there are a lot of those days! As a techno n*** I have to admit I went to the basement a couple of times to check the monitor and see what the water temp, exterior temp, etc were. The way this boiler and its controls work is quite ingenious. As promised, Shavitz called this fall to have their guys come out and do a check and adjust on the system (no charge); everything was right on spec, as you'd expect, and I'm sure they would have answered any questions. Just last week they called to see how the system was working and ask if there was any way they could have improved their service. I had to answer 'no' because I don't see anything that needs improving. I know this is a long review but I did a lot of research and had a lot of contractors in, and maybe I can save someone some of that trouble. I'll post back if I run into any issues with our system but so far we are 100% happy and feel we made the right decision with the Triangle Tube boiler and Shavitz.
Description of Work: Shavitz installed a Triangle Tube Prestige high-efficiency boiler as part of a complete system with pumps, etc, put part of our 1st floor on a second heating zone, and removed the old boiler.

Excellent follow through on appointment times and excellent follow up on estimate revisions to meet our budget and address our concerns.
Description of Work: We needed some creative ideas about how to redo the GFA heating system in our house to both reduce vent noise and accommodate a new baby's room right off the closet where are our old furnace was/is located. Bronson Shavitz came out and spent a lot of time with us brainstorming for cost effective ways to accomplish our goals. We're still looking to have this work done in the near future and, when we do it, Bronson will be our first call. Just a great family run business.

Shavitz came out very quickly. The technician seemed eager to identify the problem and solve it in the least expensive way possible. Each step of the way, he explained what was going on and what he suggested doing. I was expecting to buy a new system, but got out of there with a repaired and tuned-up AC that, he suggested, would last me several more years.
Description of Work: Our AC conked out, just in time for a heat wave. It's an older unit, so I feared the worst. Turns out there was a bug stuck in a switch, something the technician had seen many times before. Parts that were damaged beyond repair were replaced and the unit was tuned-up.

After the water boiler/pump that provides hot water for our entire condo building broke down during the winter our association decided to start annually servicing the boiler and pump. Shavitz came out to take a look at our equipment in order to provide an estimate for annual servicing. Once the service agreement was signed it was relatively easy to schedule a time to have a technician come out. The technician was prompt, polite and thorough. Assuming pricing for annual service does not increase dramatically we will most likely sign with Shavitz again next year for our annual boiler maintenance.

It went fine--and since this field is required, that's all I'm going to say!!
Description of Work: David came, checked out the unit, and fixed it. He had a number of suggestions, but did not use any high pressure sales tactics. He replaced a blown capacitor with the newer "hard start" kit, cleaned the unit, checked for freon charge, and was satisfied that I didn't take any of his suggestions, except a one year service contract for two furnaces and A/C units.

I was having some heating and cooling issues recently. Prior to Schavitz coming, I was able to get my AC working again as I determined it was just a blown fuse. Once I reset the fuse, the AC worked properly. As I have lived here for 1.5 years, I thought it would be wise to get the unit serviced just to make sure all was okay. When the tech (Brian, who was great) was looking on the roof, he found out that disconnect box was missing the cover. He had one priced for me, but it was higher than I wanted as I would have to buy a whole box, not just the cover. He suggested that I go and look for the cover as it could be hiding up there as the roof deck is under construction. He also told me how to safely put it back on without killing myself =). Shortly after he finished and left, I went up to the roof and was able to find the cover and put it back on the box. I had a minor issue with the price quoted, but Brian was able to work it out for me. I will use the again in the future due to excellent service and pleasant experience with the tech/Brian.

They were extremely responsive when my furnace broke down at night. They came out that evening and brought space heaters to get us through the night. The next morning they were there by 8:00 to install the new furnace. The re-did the venting which had been installed wrong when the home was built and did not charge extra. Overall, they were VERY professional and thorough. I've used many HVAC companies in the past, and by far they are the best. They are not least expensive, but they are among the best and I believe they can be trusted to be honest about the work that needs to be done-- or not done.

We replaced humidifier with Shavitz. The installation went ok, when winter came and we started to use it, there was water leak so I called the company to ask them to take a look. At first one day went by without hearing back from them even the reception told me the technician should call me within minutes. Then I called back the next day, they said I had to wait for 3 days before they could send anyone. Well, I waited. When the service man came in, he spent a few minutes and told me the draining pipe got clogged and there is nothing he could do to fix it. But when I talked to the office I did say it could be a problem with the humidifier or a problem with the drain pipe, they acknowledged me that they could fix it either way. The dealing with Shavitz cost me 4 days in delay of fixing an issue as well as a $129 service charge, with the problem still outstanding. I wouldn't call it great service. A representative from Shavitz called later and asked for details about what went wrong, after my explanation, she apologized for the mis-communication, and reimbursed me a portion of the service charge. So even though the previous experience wasn't great, I think the company dealt it fairly and made it up to customers. That's a plus.

Response from Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning
Shavitz Heating & Air Conditioning is a family owned and operated company that has been in business for over 100 years by making customer service a priority. We continually strive for prompt responses to all customer calls and have processes in place to provide a service as timely and punctual as we possibly can (including 24/7 on-call technicians). Shavitz HVAC installed a humidifier for this client on August 6th. The humidifier was tested and was functioning properly. The client then called in during the weekend and stated that she had to turn the new humidifier off because it was leaking and there was water on the floor. Linda, our dispatcher, called her on November 1st at 9 am and scheduled a technician to be out on November 3rd between 11am and 2pm. Brian, the technician, arrived as scheduled, on November 3rd at 12:30. Brian determined that the humidifier was working properly and the problem was the building drain line in the floor of the condo was actually plugged up somewhere below the floor. Brian tried to clear the plug with compressed air but could not. He explained to the client that the main drain line was plugged and a plumber would need to be called to attempt to unplug the line.

Fantastic. We don't have any animals or kids, so usually the guys are in and out in 20 minutes. The Shavitz guy was diligently working for more than an hour - he inspected each system thoroughly, pointed out components that might wear out in the future due to age and informed us on current tax credits if we updated the 20 year old system. He was a rockstar. Will only use Shavitz from now on!

They are prompt, provide very competitive pricing and have fantastic service/installation. Their team is professional and friendly. If you don't want to get hosed, go with Shavitz. One happy customer.
Description of Work: I highly recommend Shavitz for any HVAC needs. Our hot water heater crapped out over the weekend. Shavitz came out a day or two later -- exactly when scheduled. They provided a quick quote and installed the very next day as planned. They showed up on time, removed the old/broken one and installed the new one -- all within a few hours.
