The floors are beautiful! Mike's team did a great job, even around tricky areas like the radiators. Mike was able to start the job shortly after I contacted him which was awesome. His team was working on a couple other jobs so there hours at my house changed a lot but mike was always available by phone to answer questions or give updates. His team worked very late one night to try to get the job done within the week. They really did a nice job sanding everything and applying 3 costs of finish. The team was very knowledgable about finishes and helped me select a finish that highlights the grain. The floors squeak less and look like brand new floors!

Mike came to the house and gave an estimate and told us what would be done. We had three estimates done and Mike's was around the same price as the other two. The wood was dropped off a week before the job started. Regarding the furniture removal and placement back into the house, we felt they were very careful with the furniture to make sure nothing was damaged. They put the furniture in our garage on the carpeting they removed from the house instead of putting it on the garage floor - nice touch.
After the first day, I was a little concerned that some blinds and cabinets were not covered enough to minimize the dust, and called Mike to tell him about it. He made sure that the next day when the crew came that everything was taken care of to my satisfaction. The house was cleaned up when they left each day since we were living in the house while the work was being done. Any questions or concerns we had, Mike and/or his crew responded promptly - they were a pleasure to work with and we felt they took alot of pride in their work. We love the new floors and we would definitely recommend and use them in the future.

Mike and his crew did a wonderful job at each of our jobs. First, we got quotes from him and 2 others for the floors in our new home. Most were covered by carpets and were in generally good condition, but some were covered by vinyl flooring and other material. Mike's crew came in at the best price and could do the work on our timeline. They came, saw, and conquered our floors in three days. And they are beautiful!! They did such a nice job on our floors that we turned around and hired Mike again a couple months later. He came out, gave a reasonable quote, and started the very NEXT DAY!! Once again, his crew did a wonderful job!
I would highly recommend giving Mike a call if you are in need of any work done on your hardwood floors.

We got a quote from Steve and another company, he was a little more expensive so we ended up using the other company instead. This particular company that we used made so many mistakes and refused to take blame for them. We lived an our away from Steve and after these issues we called him and spoke with him about it and he went out of his way to drive all the way to our home and look at the work of this other company. He suggested we give them a call back and make them repair this poor work as well as other suggestions. I was very appreciative for his honesty, his time, and his recommendations. I highly recommend him for his services.

My interaction was with Mike Smalbergher, the owner of Mike?s Hardwood Flooring. The overall project was completed very unprofessionally. My new hardwood floors were installed and are not level. There are patches throughout my two bedroom condo that have lumps visible to the eye. My floors are NOT level in any room where hardwood was installed. His team did not use transitions from the hardwood floors to the bathroom tile on both bathrooms. The framing over the door is now cut too short. Additionally, the cleanup was terrible. They plugged the refrigerator back in but did not ensure it was working properly so $300 worth of food was ruined.
I contacted 2 agents that confirmed that the floors should be level. We used a golf ball to confirm the floors are seriously uneven. I asked Mr. Smalbergher to make the repairs and to install the floors professionally. The owner threatened to place a lien on my home because I asked him to make the repairs. I was open to working through the solution. However, he was very nasty. I would like him to install the floors properly so we will likely end up in court.

"Let’s get some things clear form the very beginning. The contract states that “Mike’s Hardwood flooring, Inc. cannot be responsible for ........., dust from sanding ...... damage resulting from moving of any furniture, fixtures, appliances ....... etc ... “ and we have it on paper with (deleted member name) signature on it as AGREED. With all this in mid we did plugged in the refrigerator, we did wash the floors after we were done and we also notified the customer of the delays caused by the material delivery, in which customer was responsible to provide, uneven floor is a common occurrence is downtown high rises and there is NOTHING we can to do to even them out beside pouring another layer of concrete and that is way out of our scope, we don’t do that. Starting with the first issue: Concrete floors in downtown are common and as previously stated we can not do anything about it unless customer requires a concrete company to come out and assess the issue. Customer did say they had three different prices for the floors (all Angie’s List customers) and still there was no concern related to us by her on the leveling of the concrete. (see pictures - http://bathremodelingchicago.net/293) The framing over the door (referring to the casing hight) was existing, we did not cut it nor/or removed/reinstall it. Previously the customer had marble/granite floor tiles installed and the casing was previously cut to accommodate that, we removed the tiles and installed engineered hardwood floors and that was lower than the existing flooring. That resulted in the gap that the customer is referring to. (see pictures - http://bathremodelingchicago.net/293) We plastic wrapped the refrigerator and plugged in to an existing outlet, my flooring installers are not qualified electricians to verify if the outlet is working, it was assumed it was. (see pictures - http://bathremodelingchicago.net/293) But as you can see in the pictures, there was none living in that apartment, the refrigerator was empty (I witness that myself), so this argument holds no water. To repair the unevenness in the floors now it would require the floors to be pulled out and new ones to be installed, since believed we are not to be blamed the customer will have to pay for all the expenses. (see pictures - http://bathremodelingchicago.net/293) We have a TXT message form the customer saying how much she likes the floors after one of the bedrooms was finished, there was no problems at the time with the floor being uneven. I bought a big deal but it was for prefinished flooring. They told me it would look dramatically different and recommended against it. Also even though the room is about 200 sq ft, they said with the waste, I would need more wood (this I don't quite understand in terms of the big deal since if the maximum is for a 200 sq ft area, that should include waste). They said they would install the quarter round and the wood vent cover. I had creaks in the subfloor (the builder had used nails) and they told me they would screw it all down. He told me he would refund the amount of the big deal if I wanted. So in the end, I paid more than double the price of the original big deal which only included the installation of the prefinished flooring.
They put me on their schedule and arrived as agreed. They were very concerned about making sure they protected my existing flooring leading to the bedroom. They used the carpet padding as a cushion for their equipment. They kept the door closed and minimized the amount of sawdust from both cutting and sanding.
They asked what kind of finish I wanted and I told them I wanted the same as I currently have (neither flat nor high gloss). They put on the first coat and removed most of the equipment and all the debris. They came back several hours later to re-polish, install the quart and apply the second coat. They vacuumed and cleaned up.
They did an excellent job. The finish is almost flat but it still looks great. I washed the walls and was really pleased that there was no damage and no marks I couldn't remove with Magic Eraser. After filling in all the nail holes in the quarter round and gaps in the miter joints, and between it and the base board, I painted and the baseboards look great. When I was able to remove the new floor vent, I discovered they had even vacuumed inside since there was nothing for me to clean up.
The floor looks and feels solid. It is better than the wood floors put in by the builder. There are no gaps and no creaks. You can't tell where they touched up the problem on the stair landing.
They did a beautiful job. The crew was very friendly and professional. I love the way the new floor looks and would definitely recommend Mike's to anyone interested in having a new floor installed or having an existing one refinished.

The floors looked beautiful and perfect but there was never a second coat of poly applied, or if there was it was put on in the same day (when you are supposed to let the first dry and come back the next day to sand and re-apply). So while they looked beautiful and uch improved, we are left with a chalky feel to the floor until we have the time to poly it ourselves.
The company touted its containment process, yet there was piles of dust everywhere. Lastly, the owner called to say that we had more than 400 square feet and bad floors and that I owed him extra. I told him that he never came out to see the project first, as I suggested. Again they never came back a second day for the second poly coat. So essentially, the $545 was for them to come over one day only and sand and do one poly coat. Not a stellar deal. But they have the potential to do a good job.

"We always apply to coat I told the owner that it will take one day we use first coat quick dry finish and second coat regular dry finish . The floor look like new now ,I always tell people to stay and see how many coat we apply , we can no do the job with one coat of finish because it can not be done , and as for dust we use dustless not dust free ."

Mike's did good work. Our job was initially to install a new hardwood floor. We added refinishing an existing hardwood stairwell when they came to start the work. The pricing seemed fair, based on our relatively small job and the required prep work. Mike recommended using the "Swedish" finish that is most durable (also most expensive and smelly).
Jorge (the site foreman) was very conscientious and proactively asked questions to make sure we were satisfied with the look. In order to correct the existing flooring he had to cut through a cement threshold which was a lot of extra work. Also some joists had to be precisely trimmed to get the floor level before installing a new subfloor. When the floor was opened I asked if I could install insulation and what I should purchase. Jorge actually installed it for me and recommended using spray foam to get a good barrier.
At a later point there was a misunderstanding that required re-work and they made it right.
Overall, we were very satisfied with the new floor and refinishing. We have recommended them to other people and will hire them again to refinish the remainder of our floors down the road.

My floors were worn and stained in spots, and I was worried they would be impossible to refinish. I purchased the $999 deal, and Mike was able to accomodate my request for a quick turn around. Three days later, his team came out to work on my floors and then next morning I came home to what looked like a brand new floor. Best money I've ever spent.

Mike came out to do and estimate and gave me an accurate idea of what to expect. He gave me a few different options as I was considering installing the new stair treads myself. He gave me an quote where he would stain them at the same time so they would match my floor, and another option for him to install and finish. It was worth paying a little bit more to have his crew install for me. They did a great job on the stairs. They used to make a lot of noise but they secured the new threads extremely well and I'm very happy with them. The floor was fairly scratched and required a lot of sanding and my wife and I wanted to change to a darker color to help hide the gaps that created from the original installer not letting the wood acclimate before installing and shrunk like crazy. So Mike's team sanded, filled the gaps, re-stained, and sealed the floor. It looks so much better. His crew also spent a lot of time covering up the house to minimize dust, and his dust collection system was a big factor in minimizing it even more. As should be expected; there was still a little bit of dust on the walls and some surfaces.
There was some issues with timing as it seems it's one of those jobs that you don't know what you get into, until you start working. We had to stay an additional night in a hotel due to a communication issue. By the time they called to say that we could stay that night at the house, we had already checked into a hotel. I don't know if this was a one off, or if Mike and his crew just need a little more communication with their clients. They made up for it in quality. They upgraded my finish to meet my family?s needs since we have a dog an a lot of traffic, but the smell lingered in the house for a few days. I would recommend that if you go to a non-water based finish, you do it when you can sleep with the windows open. We did it during an extremely cold week and had a hard time sleeping due to the smell and fumes.
Overall- we are extremely happy with the job Mike and his crew performed. We would instantly hire them again, and I have already referred him to a friend who is having them install some floors this month. They quality was great, and price was extremely competitive.

We hired someone else to refurnish our hardwood floors and they did a less than stellar job applying the finish. Mike came in, rebuffed the floor, and applied a new coat of semi-gloss. They now look as good as new.

Overall, it went very well. Mike answered his phone on my first call, and provided very good detail on what would be involved fo the refinishing and how the process worked. I was required to purchase the deal first and then he would come out to the house to look over the project. He said if I didn't want to go forward with the floor finishing, he would refund the money. He came out a couple of days later, and gave me and my wife confidence that the project would go well. As it was about 3 weeks until Mike could schedule our project, he answered my several phone calls, as I had a number of follow-up questions before the project started. His workers, George and his partner, showed up as scheduled. George took time to explain how long it would take, and what they would be doing. The guys gave us an opportunity to look at stain colors on our floor, before they started the job. George was very open about his concerns that our pickled oak colored floor was bleached before the last sanding, and it may result in white spots coming through the dark stain. We decided to go ahead with the dark stain. George and his assistant did a great job on sanding and staining. George did a great job sanding out the indentations and bleach. The staining was flawless. Overall, I couldn't have asked for more. The floor is perfect, and really changed the look of our house. I would recommend Mike's Hardwood Flooring to anyone!

Mike came out and gave me an accurate estimate for the work to be performed. Originally, I tried to contact the contractor that installed the original wood floors to buy the same wood as found in the rest of my unit but after several calls and a trip by Mike to obtain the wood, it became clear we could not get that wood. Mike ordered a wood that fairly closely matched the wood in my rooms, in fact, it is a prettier wood with wonderful grain. Two men showed up on time to install the floor and worked hard to complete the installation. They were courteous throughout the process and careful in their work I am very impressed with how detail oriented they were matching up lines with my other floor even though there was a threshold between the rooms. The cuts in the wood were exacting even though they finished the installation with quarter round, painted it to match my trim. Additionally, they covered existing furniture and were careful to return the furniture to it's original location and clean up. The floors are beautiful and completely changed the look of the room. I would highly recommend Mike's group for your floors.

I started with two estimates and Mike was slightly higher ($300) than the other one but he also agreed to refinish a small entryway and help move my furniture for his price (the other company would not). I also just LIKED him better. He is prompt, he communicated with me every step of the way and the men working for him (Jorge and crew) were polite, professional and talented. The floors look great. Prior to their arrival I boxed everything from my 2nd floor and they helped move all furniture and boxes to the 1st floor. This made the process go swiftly. They started Monday morning at 9:00 AM and the floors were completely dry and walkable by Thursday morning. The fumes were almost undetectable because they cover all entryways with plastic. My two cats and I were able to sleep downstairs the whole time. There was no mess or sawdust upon their departure. Jorge even helped me put my bed frames back together! It was a great experience and I would absolutely use them again.
