We have NEVER used a moving company. My husband, friends and family have always taken care of house and apartment moves. I was nervous about hiring a mover and heard many horrible stories about various companies. To be honest I almost went with a mover with a higher rating. They were not as friendly or responsive on the phone or through email. My second choice (sorry) was Golan because a co-worker had suggested them. Golan answered their phone, talked me through the stages of the move and even offered options for saving money! But? the first mover had a better rating? I took both estimates and even though the other mover was a bit more money, I called them to book the job. Their response was ?Sorry, we?re booked now- click.? I called Golan and they were more than happy to accommodate us. Armando, Eddie, Sal and John arrived promptly at 9:30. Armando talked me through the billing and charges. This was great though I was already prepped from my phone conversation and email follow-up. There were no surprises. All four movers were friendly, professional and thorough. They wrapped the furniture with care and moved it skillfully. I was especially worried about one piece that belonged to my mother. I asked the movers to treat it with love. They did. Nothing was broken or damaged. We were under a strict time frame trying to juggle times at two apartment buildings. The first building was late in allowing the movers access. The second building allowed us to move our time up a bit. The men were flexible and actually arrived at the second location before us. I was worried they wouldn't know where to go and would have trouble parking, etc. I was wrong. They had it all under control! The move-in was equally smooth. They completed the job under the estimated time and I am one, happy camper! Bottom line: Stop moving yourself. Choose Golan first!

I'd give them a A minus - if that grade was available. They showed up on time, were professional throughout the move. What kept them from a full A+ was: 1) some damage to the subfloor in the condo when, evidently, a heavy piece of furniture was accidently dropped during the move The furniture was fine - the subfloor cost about $150 to repair. It was a while ago - so don't remember if we submitted a claim w/ their insurance - or not. It wasn't a big deal. 2) their price was a bit higher than some other providers. When you add in tape, boxes, etc - it was probably higher than the number listed above. All things considered - we'd use them again.

I got them through a referral of a friend of mine. I thought the price was very fair. I thought the service that they offered was very, very good. We were impressed with every aspect of it. They moved us from our house into a storage facility and then they also went and picked up furniture at a house that we had bought at an estate sale and brought it back to the facility and then when we moved into our new house like a month and a half later they moved everything out of our storage unit and into our new house. Nothing was every broken. The same crew that moved us out moved us in so we were comfortable with them and they were comfortable with us and they did an awesome job.

They were okay. There were actually a few broken items. I thought that they were highly unprofessional. The guys who loaded the truck showed up nine hours late. They were fighting with each other the whole time they were loading the truck. Despite that I thought they did a pretty good job packing the items. But, in the end, I was missing parts for a desk. I had some very expensive wood furniture that had fractures in it. Our King size mattress was bent in half.

Golan's and its staff are great. Recently widowed, I am downsizing from two homes to one new home. This is being done through a series of 6 differently staged moves, including packing and actual moving. So far Golan's has done three of the moves and the 4th one is scheduled next week. From the very first call to them from someone who has never had to do this before on her own, Golan's staff was helpful in all of the coordination of the moves and the crews for each move were on time, professional, and very careful with my belongings -- some of which were very fragile. Not one thing was broken or damaged. They were very careful not to cause any damage to walls, floors, etc. as well. I highly recommend Golan's.

We used Golan's for a long distance move from Chicago to Texas and we would NOT recommend them. Golan's was very eager to get our business with a reasonable quote, but their quote was misleading and the final cost of our move ended up being approximately twice the price of their quote. The team that packed up our house in Chicago was very nice and professional, and probably the only bright spot in our experience with them. After our goods were picked up, Golan's misled us again regarding storage and delivery to another state. In short, once Golan's picked up our stuff from Chicago and put it in storage somewhere, they said I could call once I had the final date and destination exactly verified. Upon calling, they said it would be a month or more until my things would be delivered and stated repeatedly there was just nothing they could do. I had to beg and plead for days until they finally scheduled the second half of my move from storage to a destination in Texas. Upon arrival, the unloading team was OK but didn't unpack anything and was somewhat disorganized with paperwork. They basically left everything in giant piles for me to sift through. Upon finishing our unpacking, many things were broken, damaged, or missing (including some tools that never showed up, gift cards that were stolen, broken dining chairs, and several family heirlooms). To make matters worse, I own a professional packaging design company and everything was packed to the highest possible standards to pass 36" drop tests and THEY STILL BROKE THINGS! Now they are making it purposely difficult to file a claim for these damaged goods and they drag their feet with everything. If this is what passes for customer service, they should be out of business. I don't know how they are for local moves, but I would strongly recommend staying away from them for a long distance move. There's gotta be better companies out there.

This was the most upsetting experience I have ever had with movers (I have used movers 8 times in my life, including two cross country moves.) I was moving my 84 year old father from one location in Skokie to another 1.5 miles away. He lives alone in a two bedroom apartment. I packed up all his items in new uniform sized boxes. Everything was in sealed boxes apart from items to go in the wardrobes, his TV and a large mirror. Both locations had long carries, but there were dedicated elevators and no stairs. Golan gave a quote of 4 hours over the phone. The lead guy on the job revised the quote to 6 hours when he arrived "but I am sure it won't take that long." This was documented in writing on his estimate sheet. Instead, it took them 9.25 hours. When he moved in this apartment it took another carrier 5 hours which included a long carry on both ends, packing his kitchen, but one less table and 4 fewer chairs. I believe the lead guy on the job was giving instructions to his crew that slowed it down as we were paying hourly. He instructed them to carry the boxes one by one. The boxes were stacked in an orderly fashion so that they could come in with a hand cart and haul 3-5 at a time easily and effortlessly (I have moved a lot and have experience with making it cost efficient.) They did not use the ramp to the truck nor the lift. When I pointed this out, the guy mentioned that he prefers it this way. I had to leave my father before the job ended. At that point things really unraveled. My father was rightfully upset that they were going to charge him for the full time, as it was clear they were just stalling the job. A shouting match ensued and he spoke to a representative from the company and they agreed to have him pay a portion of the move and would work out the rest the next day (it was now nearly 7 PM on Friday night.) What they didn't make clear was that they would hold some of his property to do so (by the agreement on the written estimate, the load should have been delivered in full.) While these negotiations were going on, one of the movers was trying to sneak out his TV and other items. He called them back a couple of times, but in the end he couldn't stop them. Golan faults include, changing the estimate from 6 to 8 hours so that it would appear that provisions of the contract do not apply (such as only paying the estimated amount plus a small 10% of the overage to receive full delivery of the load.) This is fraud, but not something most people would know, especially an 84 YO. Secondly, they took property AFTER they had delivered and unpacked it, showed him that everything was delivered and had him sign accordingly. Thirdly, they took property that they never moved! Basically it was theft of his laptop computer, which I personally delivered. They did not disclose that they took these items, nor did they have him sign a receipt that they were holding them for payment and detailed what they held in their possession. I will admit that my father could have handled it better, but because he is 84 I'll give him special dispensation. Golan acted with out reproach. Dealing with the management was no different. I would never recommend this company. And encourage anyone considering them to go somewhere else.

All in all, a good move and met expectations. I would use them again. The positives: scheduling and care with furniture. The cons: price, attention to detail. Scheduling Golan's was quite flexible in scheduling the move. They were eager and diligent in following up. I was concerned about their current labor issues and they assured me that their current movers are employees and not day-laborers. I wanted to check references on Angie's list so we booked tentatively and then confirmed the same day (weekday, not end of month). They also accommodated my request to schedule the move earlier in the day to minimize traffic when traveling from the suburbs into the city with the furniture. Care with furniture I was concerned that the men would have piano experience as the piano has been in my family for 60 years and is quite sentimental. I think the lead, Raymond, had good piano experience but am not sure about the rest. Raymond was quite competent in moving the piano, removing the top and music rack, wrapping it well, and securing it to the side of the truck. Fortunately it easily fit into the elevator so that was not an issue. I was a little nervous that although they scheduled a 4-man crew because it was a piano, but only 2 men were present when they tipped it off the dolly at delivery. I asked him about that and he said it was small enough that they could handle it. They did but I would have preferred a few more hands. Price The price was competitive so it's not exactly a con. I was at both the pick-up and drop-off and got to the 2nd location 30 minutes before they did, even though they left earlier than I did. I know they can't go on Lake Shore Drive with a truck so decided that was likely the case but it was still curious to me. They do seem to use a lot of tape and then (of course) charge per the roll but I didn't want to impede anything that might be important for the care of the piano. Attention to detail. At the pick-up they ignored the posted sign to remove shoes or put on booties. Fortunately their shoes were not too dirty but it still would have been appreciated for them to put on booties. At the drop-off they initially left 1 of the chair cushions and the footstool in the front room, even though the chair had been placed in the back. I had to ask them to move those items back...although I could have done it, there were 2 men standing around so it seemed that one could easily do it. Also, they placed the pedestal but forgot to unwrap it from the blanket / tape so I had to ask them to do this as well so that I could inspect it.
Description of Work: Moved an upright piano, two chairs with cushions and a pedestal from the suburbs to the city. In the city the piano had to fit in either a small elevator (I was pretty sure that it would) or be walked up 5 flights of stairs.

Overall, I was dissatisfied. I used Golan's in 2008 and they were great. I felt that this moving team was inexperienced. I had some damages. Also, the team started unloading/emptying dresser drawers. They even charged us at the end of the move, about 1 hour, to clean tape off of moving blankets.

Working with this company was the worst experience I have ever had dealing with a service business. The notion of customer service seems to be entirely non-existent. I am the kind of person who is happy to deal with difficulties in a process if the end result is alright, and will even be okay if the end result isn't right if there is good customer service resolution. Unfortunately, Golan's failed miserably on both accounts. I moved from Chicago to NYC in July 2014. My employer was paying for the move, so I was less price sensitive, although the number of fees and extra charges not initially given at the estimate kept racking up. The movers, though nice guys, could not follow directions at all, I would say pack these three items and leave the fourth, look away for a moment, and they would pack everything. Nonetheless, not out of the ordinary for moving. However, when the shipment was made, on the inventory list one of the boxes was listed as not even having been checked into warehouse. That was three weeks prior and the company had made no effort to let me know, or to try to resolve. I sent an email right away to the company and got no response for a few days. The box had a TV in it, among other things, which I think explains its disappearance. Anyways, I had booked the most expensive insurance coverage and called thinking this would be an easy resolution. No such thing. Golan's uses a third party claims service which I am just in the process of working with, but it makes it as painful as possible so that if you are a busy person, it is very difficult to deal with. Anything you say to Golan's inquiring about why the mistake was made, or why they had not reached out is met with a hostile/dismissive "I don't know." What really made this bad however, is that when I called to get confirmation on my insurance, they told me that I had elected for minimal coverage. Despite having an email from them showing I had chosen max coverage, they said that I had changed it on the date of the move, even though the guy doing the pickup had no asked at all about that, and on the contract I have from that day, there is nothing checked off or signed in the box for Waiver of Full Replacement Value. Nonetheless, when I tried to understand why the company was making it so difficult to process a claim for something I had ordered insurance for, and for a box they had lost (weeks prior by their own records), their "customer service" person who handles claims (Julie G), was unbelievably awful. Not interested at all in my satisfaction as a customer, completely hung up on the internal bureaucracy (almost every question, including, do you know how long the claims process usually takes, was "I don't know, I don't handle that"). When I suggested that I really hoped we could find a resolution without involving other parties, like legal counsel, she erupted in rage, began yelling, insisted I was threatening her personally while making her own threat that all of this would not help my case (which I took to mean she would work internally to not help resolve me getting reimbursement). It was just a very unpleasant experience, and not how I would expect to be spoken to having just given them more than $4K for a very low quality service. Anyways, off to the claims process! Just do yourself a favor and avoid doing business with these guys. The sales staff are very charming and seem like good people, the movers even were very courteous (despite some trouble with directions). But remember, when things go wrong, you are not dealing with them. Even if you think you have a good price, I can guarantee you they will find a way to increase it (they added a fee on mine on delivery day for having to rent a smaller truck to navigate NYC, when I called to ask they said they hadn't expected their truck to have a hard time parking in New York City and needed a smaller one, how could they have possibly known New York City is congested?!?!?) I would never ever move with them again, or wish upon anyone except for perhaps members of ISIS, that they have to experience time on the phone with Golan's customer service.

Horrible. Arrived late and we're very slow. Provided poor service, dented furniture and walls on purpose, they misplaced boxes by putting them in the wrong room and forgot items in the house and in the trucks. At the end I was overcharged for supplies and ran out of time to deliver goods both at the condo and the storage unit. My wife and I spent the following 2 days moving ourselves because Golans didn't commit enough manpower and time. Beware this company has unhappy workers who treat your property and you with disrespect. They do not want to be working and are uncommunicative and surely.
Description of Work: Management is unresponsive and doesn't seem to care about the customer. If you value your time and property do not use Golan. They had good reviews in the past but now have fallen into the "F" category this summer. Salesperson deliberately underestimated job time by 50% to get the business.

If you want terrible customer service, then use Golan movers. Awful. My family member attempted to use them for a move recently that was supposed to happen on Saturday. They called on Thursday night to tell her that they needed to cancel because their movers were on strike. Now I understand that things happen, but here is the thing - they knew about the strike earlier in the week and waited basically till the last minute. We asked that they compensate us for either some of the boxes or the extra few hundred dollars it took to book a new mover last minute. There answer was basically a somewhat polite go F yourself. When things go wrong, there is an opportunity to treat your customers right and do the right thing. In this case at least apologize and offer to compensate us by helping us cover the additional expense of finding someone to move last minute. In terms of customer service, they give comcast a run for their money. There are lots of movers out there. Do yourself a favor and use someone else. There answer will be there was nothing they could do. Probably the worst customer service experience we've had in the last five years.

Please, stay away from these guys. I had service scheduled for july 28, 2014 at 8AM. Exactly at 8 AM I got a call from Golan movers saying they are not coming. Everyone was courteous and friendly. Once they had all of my stuff in their truck they let me know that the aproximate cost of the move would be 4x what they quoted me. They let me know if there were any additional costs once they got my stuff into storage. Then storage turned out to be 3x what they quoted me. So far, I paid $1,800 for moving and storing my stuff for two months. Can't wait to shell out a crap ton more money to get it back. They have me by the balls since they have my stuff...

First off let me say that Dallas who was the crew leader during our move was amazing!!! If it wasn't for him, I can honestly say that our move would have been an utter disaster. Everything went fine till 2 days before the move when I had called the Golans rep who arranged the move. During our final check point call, he confirmed that we could get 2 extra hours of packing help on the day of the move, and that the moving crew would arrive at our place at 8.30am. On the day of the move, the crew arrived almost 2.5 hours late ... closer to 11am. I'm not sure who dropped the ball, but this was very inconvenient as the elevator at our old place was reserved only till 1pm, but moving wasn't complete till 3pm. This caused us a lot of extra stress and added to the move time itself because we lost the elevator reservation at the old bldg after 1pm, and had to use the elevator as and when it was available for the next 2 hours. Also there were unnecessary arguments with the building manager and the maintenance staff in my old building because we were officially supposed to stop the moving activities by 1pm. Not to mention, that the 2 hr delay at the old place also led to delay at the new place. Secondly, and most importantly, for such a move which also included some amount of packing, one of the 3 member crew who arrived literally DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING about packing or moving. He was extremely slow, was completely uncommunicative (he didn't say anything and he couldn't understand anything that was said to him). Dallas and Jesus were coaching him the entire time ... even for something as basic as DON'T DRAG THE DRESSER ON THE WOOD FLOOR, BUT LIFT IT. This also added to the entire packing and moving time and money by a great deal. As a result of all that happened, we ended up paying much more than was originally estimated. This was a huge drain to us during this time. I've moved 4 times in the past 6 years, and I have to say this was the WORST moving experience in my life ... both money wise, and peace of mind wise. On top of everything, nobody followed up to offer an explanation, or offer any kind of compensation once the move was over. This is most disappointing, and I will definitely NOT be referring Golans to my friends and family. After I personally took the initiative to email Golans about this incident and all that had happened, Julie Gold who is the General Manager at Golans contacted me on the phone. Even though the call sounded cursory, she heard me out and promised me she would call within a week with a resolution. It's been close to a month since then, and she never got back to me till now. They've certainly proved that irresponsibility in their case has started from the top!

Great move. They showed up right on time, were efficient in the packing of the truck. Truck was loaded and leaving the first apartment in about 2 hrs 30 minutes. Took about an hour to get to my new place and an hour and 30 minutes to unload. Everything came out in the same condition it started, they were very professional and made my move much easier.
Description of Work: Moved my family. 2 bedroom apartment. They wrapped all furniture in padding and expertly loaded/unloaded all of my belongings.

This is the second time I've used Golan for a local move. The sales rep was professional and helpful. And the team of 4 guys who did the move were careful and competent. We had Golan wrap many larger items in plastic to protect them during the move; and while in storage (a short term storage). We had boxed many items prior to Golan's arrival. This move was for larger items; furniture, boxed items and some misc items. They packaged a mirror and some artwork for us. Many smaller items and clothing we moved ourselves. Total move time was about 3 hours. Total move miles about 5. I can recommend Golan.
Description of Work: Golan moved the contents of a small two bedroom apartment into storage for us.
