It was okay. They did a decent job. I think they were okay. They ended up doing some extra duct work which did not really help at all. They charged me an $500 or $600 to put in an additional vent and in one part of my house it gets cold in the winter, but it didn't make a difference really. All that extra cost was, like, not really. I wanted to use someone I could trust. It means there were lower bids, but I went with them. Their responsiveness was good.

Description of Work: Furnace had been cycling on high limit since I bought the house 2 years ago. They diagnosed the problem, installed a new air return grill, checked and adjusted the combustion to lower the flue gas temp and eliminate the high limit cycling. Also returned to re-route the flue and intake piping.

I contacted Corcoran for furnace cleaning in Oct 13 because I couldn’t find my old HVAC person (may had retired). My neighbor uses Corcoran for a long time, and I like the idea of supporting a locally owned business. First thing I noticed, Corcoran charges more than my old HVAC guy. Humidifier inspection is extra. My pervious HVAC guy charged 30% less and includes humidifier inspection and replacing the AprilAire water panel. Well, since I am trying to build a relationship, not going to worry about the price difference and decided to go with the package that includes Spring AC tune up to maximize the value. For the furnace cleaning, Corcoran technician arrived on time and was very careful to keep my house clean. The technician performed a thorough cleaning and inspection for my furnace. He spent some time to try to tune my high efficiency furnace to squeeze out additional efficiency. The technician even measured the airflow in the duct works to ensure the intake and heat delivery are optimal. My old HVAC person had never done this. Perhaps that’s why Corcoran costs more. Now, I am a bit on the fence with the airflow tests. It involves drilling holes in the duct works. To tune my furnace, the technician needed to drill a hole in the PVC exhaust. The technician securely plugged all the holes and put additional taping around the PVC exhaust when he finished with the test, just something to be aware of. The technician told me the capacitor for the blower is not working optimally. It might be on it’s way out. The thought of not having heat in Chicago winter was enough for me to pay the extra to replace with a new one. In Spring, we scheduled the AC inspection. The technician arrived within the 2 hours window they told us. The first thing the technician told me is the capacitor of my AC unit is not working optimally, it might be on it’s way out. Well, this time I decided to take my chances because I just replaced the capacitor 2 years ago when it failed after 7 years of operations. Then the technician told me they will have to charge me service call fees if I call them when my capacitor fails later to the effect of around $300 instead of doing it today for $140. My old HVAC guy charged me less than half of what he quoted me to replace the capacitor when it failed the last time. I did give in when Corcoran told me my AC could use more Freon. I know these things are supposed to be in a sealed system but the AC unit is almost 9 year old and I have never refilled it with Freon so I gave in for the additional $75. Corcoran was very thorough but because of the upsell and costs. I think I am going to try someone else in Angie’s list before I go back to Corcoran.

I thought the price was very reasonable for the amount of time they put in. I think he is very knowledgable in a wide variety of heating needs. Just so you know, they will work on pool heaters, a hard service to find! I wouldn't call anyone else!
Description of Work: They did the orignal installation two furnaces and two central air conditioning units. On this visit, they came to fix our heat exchanger. They got the replacement parts paid for by the manufacturer due to it being a repeat defect. The $150 was for their labor charge.

From the first phone call to the office, I knew I had found the company with whom I was going to do business. When Brenda answered the phone she was helpful, friendly and efficient. I felt this same way when John came out a few days later to give me an estimate. He was professional and knowledgable and very detail oriented. We exchanged a few emails and a phone call after he provided me with a quote and I came to know how passionate he is for his business. For the 21 years I have lived in my townhouse, I have always had a problem getting the master bedroom, which is located above the garage, to the same temperature as the rest of the house. It is either too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter. John suggested I add additional ductwork to the bedroom, a suggestion other contractors had never proposed. When I received a quote from John, it was very detailed and was $1000 less than what I received from another contractor who also proposed an air conditioner and furnace of lesser quality than a Trane. The other contractor proposed adding a separate zone for my master bedroom, which I have heard from other contractors would most likely not solve my problem. John's quote was extremely detailed and thorough. Corcoran HVAC also provides a Heatmaxx/Coolmaxx system efficiency set up which is a value added perk few companies provide. They also remove all of the old equipment and packing materials from the new AND sort it and recycle it, which I really value. The day of the installation went extremely well. Tim, Greg and Mike arrived on time and quickly went to work assessing what had to be done, which was quite a bit. They were efficient, knowledgable and great problem solvers when challenges arose in my home. I felt completely confident in their ability to do quality work and they lived up to my expectation. Not only do I have new equipment and training in how to use it, best of all, my master bedroom is now as cool as the rest of the house. After 21 years, I finally found a company who knew how to solve my problem and were able to provide excellent technicians to install the equipment at a very fair price. What more could I want????
Description of Work: Installation of a new Trane high efficiency, variable speed air conditioner, furnace, and digital thermostat, an Aprilaire humidifier, Guardian Aire RGF Lamp (air cleaner) and a new supply and return duct to the second story master bedroom.

Three of the most professional tradesmen we have encountered in a number of years arrived at our door right on time. They were very careful to lay down floor covers to protect our carpeting as they moved old equipment out and installed new equipment into our upstairs attic bedroom closet. The job took 2 days. The equipment is remarkable. We literally can't hear the A/C when it is blowing. The outdoor compressor unit exceeds my expectation for being quiet. We now wait in anticipation to see how much we will save on our electric bill this summer! Thanks for a job well done!
Description of Work: Our 1920's era, multi-floor house had a retro-fit central air-conditioning system that was 26 years old, loud and very inefficient in terms of energy consumption. In short, it was time to replace it. We asked 3 companies to compete for our business. All were professional in their interaction with us but we chose to go with Corcoran for several reasons. First, they came recommended by some close friends of ours and while they were not the cheapest, their proposal was the most professional and when we had additional questions, we left a message on a Sunday afternoon and they responded with a call back in less than 15 minutes. Furthermore, the outdoor unit is very close to our patio so we wanted the quietest yet efficient unit we could find. They took the time to really help us understand what all the trade-offs were so we could make an informed decision.

They are horrible. Don't ever let them inside your door. They are the worst. They installed a new boiler for us, and they had to keep coming back to fix it. They kept wanting more money to fix it, and my house still wasn't warm. We left them for another company. I didn't like anything about them. I disliked the fact that the guy kept complaining about my house and its bad heating system. I kept telling him that it gave him job security, but he complained and complained the whole time. He never really fixed it. My husband didn't shop around. His friend recommended this company. I didn't have much say in the decision. That will never happen again. I emailed the owner detailing why I wasn't happy. He offered to come out, and then he said he couldn't make it, so I severed my ties with them. They showed up on time, but it wasn't much good.

Response from Corcoran Heating & Air Conditioning
The members have a house built in the 1950s, and later an addition was added. The original house has radiant heat in the walls as primary source for heating. For the addition portion, it is heated with fin tube baseboard. Their primary heat source for the whole house is a single boiler. The original house with the radiant walls is a air bleeding nightmare that is piped poorly. Before providing an estimate for this job I personally inspected the system and talked to the member's wife. I did a room by room Manual J Load calculation and made several recommendations. We talked about their current system and how they had trouble heating their house with it. The members had hired several different heating contractors prior to our arrival, and I believe the guy they had been working with on it just before us had passed away or retired. I recommended some piping and pumping changes be made to the new boiler, which we did. I also recommended switching the old house from radiant wall heating to baseboard heating, which she didn't want to do. The newer section with the baseboard heating had a couple of rooms that needed additional baseboard. The radiant heat in the walls of the old house was originally piped 60 years ago. The original installer did not provide any isolation valves to allow for proper bleeding of air from the system. The system relied on automatic air vents. It was an important point of emphasis because if changes too the radiant heat delivery system where not made, a new boiler alone would not correct all the heating problems. The new boiler was installed and the air bled from the system in July 2007. In October 2007 we received a call of a cold bathroom on the radiant side and returned to re-bleed the old side of the house free of charge. In Dec of 2007 we received a call that a bedroom in the original portion of the house with radiant wall heating was too cold. We changed some automatic air vents and added additional bleed valves to the radiant side of the system in the attic, we were unable to access piping in the wall to remedy this problem once and fore all. We cut the bill in half of what I would charge any other client of mine. This additional work did not stem from any work performed by my staff, but I wanted to help the members out with this issue. We did not receive any calls regarding issues in 2008. The last time we were on the job was 1-19-2009 to bleed the radiant side, again. At this time we again recommend switching the old house to baseboard heating. The member's wife did not want to install the baseboard at that time. In February of 2010 we were again contacted by the members regarding problems in the original half of the home. The member's wife was very aggravated, and I don’t blame her for her frustrations with her heating. I offered to personally come out to the house at no charge to see if there was anything else that could be done to get her heat now. We made an appointment that I couldn't keep, I called to reschedule to the next day. The following day I called in the a.m. to say I was on my way, and I got the answering machine, I left a message for them to call when they got the message. No return call was ever received. I made several more attempts to contact the member's wife to no avail. The radiant heat in the walls is the big issue here because it was not isolated correctly to bleed the air from the system when originally installed 60 years ago. This system was high maintenance before we set foot in this house. In hindsight I should have mandated switching the old house to baseboard or walked away from this job. Our complaints of her situation were not to get more money, or show we hate our jobs, but rather there is only so much we could do to fix the old piping. We never had any issues with the new boiler or the baseboard side of the house. Sure in an ideal world the money would be endless and clients would choose all of our recommendations so we could do the job perfectly. In this case we were trying to provide the most value at the lowest possible expense to the customer. My company has been in the heating and air conditioning business since 1982. We get most of our business by word of mouth. No one is perfect but we strive to be as close to perfect as humanely possible. The systems we engineer and install work great. We’ve serviced 50k plus systems and had about five complaints since day one. I understand there are many contractors to choose from, and even more different opinions. I would have appreciated the opportunity to finish what I started with the member's wife. I wish her and her family all the best in the future. I can be contacted to further discuss this or any other issues. Regards, Thomas D. Corcoran President Corcoran Heating and Air Conditioning (847) 397-5888

Corcoran has done our HVAC work now since 1993 when we put on an addition to the house. We have found him and his staff, to be punctual, courteous, knowledgeable, and dependable. I heartily recommend the company's work.
Description of Work: On 10 Oct 2009, we arrived home from a Shakespeare performance to find the house very cold and it was a Saturday night. It was too cold to let it go until Monday morning and so we called Corcoran for help albeit at 10 PM at night. The repairman arrived in about an hour and gave us the bad news that we probably needed a new furnace; yes, we could get the old one fixed—there was a part that was malfunctioning. Unfortunately in repairing the part (plastic) it was very hard to access and the risk of breakage was high, and then we really would need a new furnace. He did a "creative" fix to get us through a couple of days, but we did not want to risk depending on this solution going into winter. It only made sense to go the "new" route given that the other furnace was already past its expected age. Yes, furnaces no longer last the 30-40 years that they once did; now it is more like 10-15 years! We opted for a new furnace and on Monday, 13 Oct, Corcoran arrived with a new furnace and installed it for $5,044; that was $5285 less the $241 service call from the prior Saturday night. The details are: Trane XU 95% 80,000 BTU furnace Trane 2 stage thermostat Aprilaire model 700 Humidifier All electrical connections (line & Low Voltage) All sheet meter connections (seal connections) Clean and remove all garbage

I was having challenges with my furnace maintaining heat. The thermostat would drop 5 degrees before the furnace would kick in. I also had a leaky humidifier attached to the furnace. I paid for a maintenance agreement which includes 2 visits. On this visit they cleaned the furnace and cleaned/fixed the leaky humidifier. They also replaced filters/pads on both the furnace and humidifier and made adjustments to both. On the next visit, which will be in the spring, they will perform maintenance on the air conditioner. My neighbor had used them in the past and had highly recommended them. I called the non-emergency number on a Sunday and they even called me back within an hour to schedule my appointment for the next day. They were on-time, pleasant, and did the work well. They may not be the cheapest vendor but their quality in every aspect was terrific. I highly recommend them.

They were not the cheapest. The workmanship and material was top quality. The owner Tom explained in plain English why his system was superior to other quotes. For example, he set the water for the radiant heat to a lower tempature on the wood floors so they would not warp and a higher tempature for the tile floors but not too hot that I could not step onto the floor. Now that's winter I'm happy I spent the extra money to get a superior system.
Description of Work: Corcoran installed a radiant heating system and high velocity a/c. They used brass manifolds and wirsbro controls. The A/C Spacepak was install in the attic which saved space.

The conduct of the the rep was appalling. He provided an estimate that was ridiculously over-priced. When asked to provide details of what unit (specs) was being supplied under the estimate. The rep. declined siting intellectual property as his reason for witholding specifications. I am new to USA and clearly this was an unfortunate incident of trying to take advantage of a new resident (fortunately for me, he was unsuccessful as I have experience in air conditioning installations). I thought it appropriate to bring this to the attention of other members, particularly those who may appear to be easier targets for some.

Response from Corcoran Heating & Air Conditioning
I was contacted by Member to provide him with a free estimate to heat and air condition a finished space above his garage. He wanted to use a duct-less unit for this project. I agreed that this style of equipment would be a good fit for his situation. After scheduling an appointment, I proceeded to the job site to engineer a solution. I arrived on time and met with Member, because Member was not available. After confirming with Member what they wanted I proceeded with my examination of the space. I inspected their electrical panel, and scoped a route for power to the new equipment. I also, examined the clearances I would have for the equipment itself. It was a tight fit to hide all the electrical and refrigerant components, but it could be made to look nice if the proper time and effort were taken. The next step was to determine the equipment capacity. I took measurements of the space including windows, doors, room dimensions, orientations, and insulation factors. This information and the desired room temperature are necessary to properly size a system. We follow the standards of the Department of Energy, EPA, Energy Star, and the equipment manufacturers in our custom design process. The time and effort it takes to properly design a system is normal practice by less than 1% of heating and air conditioning contractors. I invested 5 hours of my time to develop the right system for Member. I presented my solution to Member within a day, whereas he said he had waited weeks for solutions from other contractors. He briefly reviewed my solution and then proceeded to ask what size my system would be. This prompted me to ask him what profession he was in. Member told me he is an engineer. My next question to him was if he gave away his engineering for free. This is essentially what he was asking me to do. He informed me that his work is different and I should just tell him what size my equipment was. After designing tens of thousands of solutions like this, I understand that other contractors are not providing this same level of time and commitment in development. I have seen my engineering passed to lower priced companies who are unable to complete this hugely important step in the design process. Other contractors then promise our level of expertise when they have our engineering and design done for them. In reality they do not deliver and cannot provide the same attention to detail. I simply refuse to give away any part of this information which sets me apart as a top level contractor. My company is not the cheapest on the block. Our certifications, and our focus is on performance based heating and air conditioning. I have seen this economy pushing contractors to cut their own margins and take numerous shortcuts simply for the work. We perform extensive testing and performance guarantees beyond industry standards. My solutions may seem higher up front in comparison to contractors who follow minimal standards. “The bitterness of poor quality long outlasts the sweetness of a low price.” Our company’s mission focuses on long term solutions that save you time, money, protects your family, and keeps you comfortable. Our custom designed installations lower utility bills, have fewer breakdowns, provide a healthier more comfortable indoor environment that will last 15-20 years. In my opinion it is unfair for Member to attribute the way I run my company as biased against someone from another country. Member felt I was overpriced which is his privilege, and he is free to take his business elsewhere. I treated him with the same respect I treat any of my clients or prospects. I find it odd to have to defend myself over a free estimate. I was either not the right fit or he just really wanted my design information for free. Regardless, my prices are based on my overhead, the experience of my employees and myself, and allow me the ability to grow my business. My company has been solving comfort problems since 1982 and we are happy to address any comments or concerns on this matter. Regards, Thomas D.
