We reviewed the work I was planning, and while he quoted everything I asked for he also suggested some cost-saving alternatives. After he emailed the quote, we set up the service appointment. His team arrived on-time. They were very professional and friendly, explaining what they were going to do and occasionally talking us through the procedures they as they were performing them. Jamie came by about 1/2 of the way through the job to check progress and answer any other questions we had. They finished on-time, and for the agreed-upon price. We were impressed with the quality of their work, their professionalism and their friendliness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The removal/install of the ceiling fixture went smoothly enough but the pendant light repair proved to be tricky....change one part, a different one fails. Jaime made multiple trips to my home as I worked with the company that sold me the light replacing the parts one by one. Finally got all the parts working and Jaime installed the light. I really appreciated Jamie making several return trips (all on my schedule and not charging me after the initial service call) to make sure the repair was done right.

+ -1 moreAfter a little exploration, Jamie determined that there was indeed likely a problem with an underground wire. Because it's winter, he advised us against even attempting to dig a trench and put in new wires, since the ground was frozen. In the meantime, he was able to isolate the wires controlling the garage from the ones controlling the office, and installed a switch that allowed us to shut off power to the garage (since that was the likely culprit). The temporary solution has worked like a charm, and we plan to have Jamie out to fix the underground wire in the spring, so we can restore power to the garage as well. Jamie was also extremely patient in answering our questions about basic wiring issues and other potential issues with the wiring in old houses. He spent 2 full hours at our place, and his price for the services was very reasonable. Highly recommended!

He told me what kind of light I needed to purchase and arranged to install the fixture as soon as I bought it. This was a very small job, but Jaimie gave it as much attention as if it were a big ticket job. We have used his services several times before, and recommend him to anyone who needs any electric work done.

Jamie and his crew did an excellent job. They arrived on time on the date promised. The crew was conscientious of both the quality of their work and the aesthetics. They came up with good ideas for wall placement of the new receptacles and switches. They were professional and efficient. I will use them again for future projects.

Punctual, friendly, and hardworking, Jamie, Phil and Tom were a great team. Beginning with the proposal, which clearly noted the Angies List discount (which I really appreciated - have had to practically beg some providers to include the discount they advertise), through to installation of the new meterbank and everything that entailed, they did a great job. They were very respectful of my home, and honestly, I actually enjoyed having them around because I sensed that they knew exactly what they were doing, worked well as a team, and wanted to do a high quality job (which they did). Thankfully I don't have any more lines to bury (!) but I will definitely hire Clar Electric for any future electrical work.
Description of Work: Due to an exterior house project issue, we decided to have our electric/utility lines buried. Clar Electric was the most professional choice - prompt for the estimate, explained everything fully, and quoted a reasonable price. They furnished and installed a new underground meterbank (with pipe from meterbank to main disconnect box), copper grounding rod, and cold water ground attachment (from water meter to main disconnect box).

This was a sizeable job; they come out listened to my needs and provided me with an estimate. On the agreed upon date they arrived on time and with all materials. They worked quickly and took the time to answer questions and didn?t balk when I wanted last minute changes. They finished on time and then thoroughly cleaned up. Before they left they again asked if there were any questions. They stayed well within the budget. I wouldn?t use anybody else.

He was able to identify the blinking problem, and he took the time to both show/explain the problem to my wife and I. He presented us with a couple of different options to correct it. Overall he was professional, prompt and took the time to explain what was wrong and what I was most impressed with told me how to prevent the outlet power out problem in the future. Charges were very reasonable for the services he preformed. We will definitely use him in the future and already asked for him business cards for any of our friends who might need an electrician.
Description of Work: We had two separate electrical problems, we had outlets out along one wall and are power was "blinking" with no regularity.

+ 0 moreEverything was great. I can't say enough about how well everything went from start to finish. Jamie is very nice, very easy to contact, and very responsive. They showed up on time on the day scheduled and did a great job. Everything looks just the way we'd hoped it would. They were very thoughful about asking questions as they went along to make sure that what they were about to do was what we wanted and where we wanted it and also provided great guidance and suggestions along the way. Our office previously didn't have any overhead lighting. We'd thought about putting recessed lighting in that room. The ceiling in that room is vaulted with just the roof immediately above. Other electricians said cans wouldn't be a problem in there but Jamie pointed out, correctly, that putting cans into that space would likely result in condensation forming around the cans and that would cause water spots on the ceiling because there's no way to ensure proper insulation around the cans in the roofline. We have that exact problem in our master bathroom, so we appreciated Jamie's knowledge and guidance on the issue. Any electrical work like the jobs performed for us require some holes to be created, but Jamie and his two other electricians really minimized the spots that needed patching. The person I hired to patch drywall after they were done was very impressed with how minimal the openings were given the scale of the work done. I'd recommend their service without hesitation.
Description of Work: Installed 8 recessed lights in LR, one recessed light over kitchen sink, track lighting in office ceiling, timer switch for outside lights, relocated cable TV outlet in FR, and installed new electric outlet in FR.

Equally impressive, he very generously did not charge me for his time, even though he was here the better part of an hour, waiting to see if the outlet would turn off again. Would DEFINITELY recommend him; we will be calling him for our next project.
Description of Work: Called Jamie last week to take a look at some outlets that had been working intermittently (and were currently NOT working). He responded promptly and we set up an appointment for 2 days later. Unfortunately, the outlet magically started working again right before he arrived. He patiently tried to replicate the problem, but, as is murphy's law, the outlet worked perfectly while he was here.

He showed us how to set the timer on the outside lights and told us how to find the owners manual on the Internet. He checked the outside outlet and discovered that there was no power going to it. We discovered that there was a light switch in our dining room that we had never used that controlled the outside outlet. Although we were a little embarassed to have called an electrician for this issue, Jamie made us feel a lot better by saying that he has dealt with this kind of thing many times before due to the Schaumburg building code. We were extremely pleased with the experience and will definitely call Clar Electric again for any future electrical needs.
Description of Work: We called Clar Electric to repair an outside electrical outlet that had not worked since we bought the house a year ago. While Jamie was here, we had him explain how to set the electric timer on our outside lights.

+ -1 moreThroughout the project, Tom and Phil offered suggestions to improve access to wall switches that made so much sense! They limited the amount of area in the walls and ceiling that had to be opened for access when running the new conduit which will make it much easier for us when we make final replastering repairs. They were on-time every morning. If we had any questions, we had the opportunity to email Jamie and his responses came the very day we sent along our inquiries, sometimes late into the evening which we greatly appreciated. Jamie, Tom, and Phil's level of professionalism and work ethic were a huge plus during the entire length of this project which lasted three weeks. We considered ourselves extraordinarily fortunate to have found Jamie's company on Angie's List and hope to have them back for additional wiring projects in the near future. Clar Electric Inc. is a rare gem of a company.
Description of Work: In November, 2009, we had contacted Jamie Clar, owner of Clar Electric, Inc., requesting to meet to discuss rewiring our now 100 year old home. Jamie walked through our home from basement to attic sharing on-target observations of the current status of our existing knob & tube wiring with fuse box and what changes could be made to upgrade our home's electrical wiring. We discussed changes we hoped to make regarding placement of wall switches, removal of swag wiring to ceiling fans, adding additional electrical service where old wiring had become non-functional. We were very impressed with the extensive experience Jamie and his crew have had rewiring older homes in the area, obtained very positive feedback from all of Jamie's references, and anxious to pursue the improvements Jamie had recommended for our home that would greatly improve its efficiency and livability. Jamie obtained the necessary permits from our Village allowing us to begin the project. Clar's crew, Phil and Tom, started work in June of 2010, installing a new 100 amp electrical service including a 20 circuit breaker panel, meterbank, riser pipe, ground rod, cold water ground attachment, replaced all of the knob & tube wiring with conduit/flexible conduit, replacing all of the necessary devices. New Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors were installed according to current code. Additional ceiling boxes were installed allowing us to remove chain and cords leading out to ceiling fans. Throughout the project, we spoke with Jamie, Tom, and Phil about ideas that we had for future improvements to our home including the addition of air conditioning to our hot water heated home. Tom and Phil installed 240 wiring for a space pack air handler in our attic to prepare the house for this future work.

I just purchased the home and the inspection had turned up several items that Jamie and his team remedied for me in 2 and 1/2 days. The team worked straight through without breaking for lunch and got the work done in a lighthearted manner. I had a couple of additional items that they added in for an additional charge but still got things done on time. Enjoyed working with them and will enjoy being able to see in my basement, plug into my outlets and have power outside - thanks Clar electric

He also pointed out to me that previous owners had installed GFCI receptacles in random rooms in the house and that if one of them tripped then the entire circuit/floor would go down and not to panic. As we are new to the house I'm sure this advice will be useful in saving us a service call at some point. At the end of they day he walked me through everything they had done. We are planning to use them again on additional work for our home.
Description of Work: We recently moved into a home built in 1934 where previous owners had installed Romex wiring incorrectly, removed protective covers from a garage panel and sized the wiring for an electric dryer improperly. We asked Clar Electric to correct the unsafe wiring, replace missing covers, replace a 220V outlet with 110V, run a dedicated circuit to our bathroom, replace four closet fixtures with fluorescent lights (we supplied) and install another fluorescent fixture (we supplied) in a utility room. Jamie had recommendations for saving money on the changes which we appreciated greatly.

During his visit he offered sound advice and saved us additional expense in a project he thought would not meet our satisfaction once complete. He had valuable insight and was right. His team was prompt, professional, and finished the projects with minimal mess or sound. They even completed the task in my 1 year-old daughter's bedroom while she was napping. His price was not the most competitive estimate we received. However, his work, advice, and quality team were well worth the small premium. Very good experience. I will use him for any electrical projects going forward and would highly recommend Clar Electric.
