There was actually some damage on the new door when they picked it up. They pointed it out to me and said I can refuse it if I want and they can return it to store. I called Menards and got a discount for keeping it. Had Rob not pointed It out I would have missed it and the discount! They were very good, did a nice job and cleaned up after. I was happy with them.

Normally, it went well. Not a very good scheduler of bigger jobs. Would come and do it one day...then end up not coming for about week because of other jobs scheduled. I am still waiting for a replacement of the sink counter top for the mudroom that the carpenter ruined...it's been about 3 yrs now. I have to admit I haven't called him to see what the hold up is. I really don't want him to do anymore work for me. He's a great carpenter and I used him for many years. His loss, my gain.
Description of Work: Front and Back door replacement, Mudroom Remodel, Installation of double vanity and double medicine cabinets Bathroom, some plumbing and electrical. Misc. other carpentry jobs around the house. Note: The cost of service is an average amount for all the services he provided over the many years we used him. It could have been more.

It has been a long time! Project date 2014. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] I am glad the only reason you wont use us is you thought we didn't have time for you, that itself speaks volumes of my company. It is funny the way people remember things. My memory is just a bit different than yours. We did run a screw through a small piece of counter that you had purchased for that mudroom. We actually ordered the matching replacement that day, paid for it, picked it up two weeks later when in. Then we tried several times to call you. I have noted that it was 4 times, of those you told us you were busy readying for a move to another state. Finally rob put a note on the counter and left it for you at your door. It seemed our projects with you were always delayed and spaced out so oddly due to personal planning, purchasing and budgeting needs. I know the design dilemma, I too have tried to reconfigure my own house for several years with no luck. We tried out best to accommodate the mid-job changes of projects, budget and schedule. We are a small company and we pride ourselves on service and that is shown here in our scores. If changes on a job are present than additional time is needed. I am proud to say I can not add days to a job. That is how a company grows. Many a time we did however work on your house and until after 9pm to finish a job. We even work Sundays to accommodate schedules. I am sorry you are unhappy. I am sure you can understand we have call policies to avoid bothering people and after 4 calls, we file the papers and wait. We really thought you sold, retired and you moved to Las Vegas as you told us you were going to do. House-Crafters wishes you the best going forward.

After getting a satisfactory estimate from House-Crafters, I ordered the door I wanted from a local home improvement store; once I knew when it was going to arrive at the store, I scheduled the installation. House-Crafters picked up the door and installed it. They charge extra for picking up the door, but it was still cheaper than having the store deliver it. The carpenter arrived on time and the job was completed in a little over 2 hours. It would have been quicker but he discovered a defect in the door handle which luckily was available from the store as a replacement part (no charge) and a 2nd worker brought it to the house. For another fee they will dispose of your old door but I opted out of that in favor of letting the regular trash service pick it up. Everyone I dealt with was very courteous and professional.

The provider offered to pick up the door for me without extra charge. When they did so, they noticed a blemish and had Lowe's get them another one that they found acceptable. They didn't need to do this, and it was great to find out they had taken so much care. The install was tricky because the door frame was not perfectly square; the install ended up taking them around seven hours with another trip for extra materials. The installers were courteous and enthusiastic the entire time. The spent the time to make the installation perfect and the results are excellent.

Rob & his helper removed the old door set in blistering 95 degree heat repaired the base flooring to assure no rot existed & installed the new door flawlessly. It took about 7 hours from start to finish, but Rob was thorough and the heat definitely made him & his team work slowly - it was HOT!! In talking with Rob he made sure many small details were well thought out & he said all day "I want to be able to sleep well at night, assuring that this door is perfect". Perfect it was... a ton of rain came the next week & no leaks. We are loving the new door & would recommend Rob without Question. *Updated 6/25/2016* Unfortunately my experience changed due to a follow-up with the additional trim work that has yet to be done. I had some trim pieces that needed to be installed, however, Rob canceled on me twice. I had to call Laura in the scheduling office because of the cancellations and she proceeded tell me about her personal life problems; stating that “this is what you deal with in small business”. Now I have to cancel and use another company to finish the work.

It was fine. It was extra than what we originally were quoted because they said they had to call in someone else because they couldn't put it in. We didn't know we were going to have to pay an additional cost until after. Maybe before they came out to install, they could just see if he was going to need additional help, ahead of time. They were on time.

Response from House-Crafters
Hello: We appreciate your comments regarding the quality of our work. We did want to briefly address the issue of additional costs and labor. The on site carpenter noted rotted floor joists and subflooring under your door when he removed the old door. The additional charges were for the materials and time to complete the repair work. The person called to site was the lead carpenter from our company. We are a full service contractor and do not sub contract work. The lead carpenter came out to assure all structural requirements were met while repairing the floor joists of your home, that's important to us! House-Crafters offers free estimates, as requested. Unfortunately you cant always see rotted wood under the door system until removed, especially in this case where it was sub floor and joists. Keep in mind, we offer full carpentry, lite electric, and licensed pre-purchase home inspections as well as remodel work; again, we thank you for your feedback and look forward to serving you in the future.

The job was a bit challenging because I did the measuring for the door size. While I was within the range of Emco suggested sizing it was really not the best fit because it was at the upper end of the range. When I replace my front entry storm door in spring I will use Home Crafters to measure my door opening before I look for a replacement door. I learned from installer that depending on my door opening measurements is how I should chose the door manufacturer. Different door manufacturers have a door width range some wider or narrower than others. You do not want a door to be at the widest or narrowest of their range to fit your door opening as it compromises the fit. Also the installer didn't recommend Home Depot-where I purchased the Emco door. "Their quality was really fallen" I think he was gently telling me that the Emco door- a part of the Anderson Door Company was a really an inferior product.

The price was right, but the quality was lacking. I have gaps in the trim woodwork that could have been avoided if they had taken more time to do the job right. Hello, Good Day! We apoligize you are unhappy with the trim on 2 of your openings. I would appreciate if you would allow the carpenter to return and service the openings. We want all customers to have "A" experiences with our company and staff. We solidly stand behind our work and our labor is guaranteed for one year. I understand from our conversation, that all other items with the four door installations were completed satifactorily and further you were happy with the installation meeting and the interactions, the only issue is the mitered corners on two sets of trim. During the installation a piece of old trim did crack- we do carry trim on our truck unless ordered, so we did return at a later date to fix that. It is not unusual for old and brittle trim to break or crack during removal or re-installation. As you have requested, I will call you on Monday the 2nd, so you have time to re-evaluate the trim issues and to schedule a time to complete the trim work to your satisfaction. I hope we can resolve the service issue and move forward. Regards: House-Crafters

Everything went as you would hope it could go when scheduling a contractor to do work. His office called me back the same day I contacted them. They even came out and provided a quote that same day. Menards shipped a door with a few defects. Housecrafters hung the door with the blemishes and when Menareds shipped me a replacement door Housecrafters came out at no additional charge and replaced the door and installed the door knob/locks on the new door.

They were scheduled to come between 1pm and 3pm. I received a message around at 12:45pm to say they would be there closer to 3pm. Then they called at 2:25pm to let me know someone was on the way. The contractor showed up at 3:20pm. He was very polite and made sure we both agreed on what I wanted done. I had asked to have the old door disposed of and knew there was an additional charge but it wasn't on the invoice. The contractor just added it to the invoice before I ok'd it so he could begin the work. He was thorough and took the time to make sure the new door was installed correctly and to my satisfaction. Overall installation time was 3 hours. Unfortunately because the contractor's vehicle was too small he was only able to take the old storm door and screen leaving behind the full size glass panel. The next morning I contacted the office and explained what happened. They were very nice and had someone come by and pick it up. Overall I am very pleased and would recommend them.

Outstanding! Punctual, patient, and professional! The first step they performed was an inspection of the new garage doors which were delivered to the house, and guess what, two panels were creased in the center. Imagine if they had cut out the existing garage door THEN found the damage on the new door! Menards expedited another set of panels in about an hour. Meanwhile, the contractor prepped the mounting hardware so as not to sit around and do nothing. I ordered pizza for all since it was close to dinner and my place was their last project of the day. The new garage door was expertly installed, the old was cut up and hauled away, and they even cleaned up the work area when finished. This was my first experience using Angie's List and I'm very satisfied I chose House-Crafters for this project.

Homeowners association & fire marshal closed all 2nd story decks in our townhouse complex due structural issues that led to a deck collapse at one unit. Structural inspection was required for all decks. We contacted House Crafters based on our experience with them on two other projects. Rob came out and spent 45 minutes with us to carefully inspect the deck and give detail recommendations and a quote on the spot. We agreed to start work and we handled the building permit application. We worked with Rob's office to get all the permit paperwork squared away with the village. The actual work lasted about 2 days. Two damaged concrete piers were dug out and re-poured, 42" deep as required by code. All 4 existing support posts were replaced, and the deck set to level. Two extra posts were added to strengthen the hand rail. A concrete saw used used to cut needed clearance in the existing concrete patio around an existing post/pier. An extra hand rail was added, as required by the code inspector. The entire process dragged out several days since Rob had to wait for the building inspector a couple of times. Figuring out what do do was a big nightmare before Rob and House Crafters. Some contractors wanted to take obviously inadequate shortcut for almost the price of what we paid Rob to do it right. Rob is a great problems solver and can find ways to get things done correctly without breaking the bank. The deck is now super-solid and looks great, especially since we've added a few coats of wood stain.

We live in a 40 yr old townhome that came with clunky metal bifold doors, the kind that rattle in the track and fall on your head at random. We had already scrapped the old metal doors, but now need wood replacements. We weren't sure who would handle interior doors and happened upon House-Crafters while trolling Angie's list. We were glad to see that House-Crafters specialized in residential doors and had stellar reviews. It was straightforward to set up an appointment with Rob's office assistant, who coordinated the rest of the project. We were pleased that Rob made careful measurements of all 8 door openings and gave us a written quote, complete with the exact door sizes needed, that day. Unfortunately, as he informed us, all of our closet door opening were non-standard in size. In fact, they did not even match each other! Despite this unexpected news, we decided to hire Rob on the spot because he was professional and honest, yet mindful of cost. We brought his quote to Menards to order custom-sized, unfinished oak veneer bifold doors based on his measurements. Once the doors arrived, Rob and his assistant picked up the doors and complete the installation in about 6 hours. We were pleased to see that the doors fit well and hung perfectly plumb despite our off-size door frames. Now, several months later, the doors still match and close correctly, despite the change from summer humidity to winter dryness. Note that we ended up finishing the doors ourselves since Rob doesn't paint or stain, as he had previous advised us. We decided to stain and seal the doors ourselves, but this isn't for everybody. It's tons of work and difficult to get a smooth finish. In retrospect, we recommend power sanding the doors with a finishing sander so that the stain is more uniform. The sealing takes 3-4 coats and can be difficult to flow on smoothly; we suggest practicing application methods on the door backs. Factory pre-finished doors would have been nice, but unfortunately they were not available in the custom sizes we needed.

Easy to schedule. Came on time. We live in a weird section of housing with known door size issues. Rob was scheduled to install just a brand new front door, but did ask since he was there, could he install storm door too. He said not a problem. Rob had to cut some tile by the front door. Ended up making a dust cloud mess throughout the entire house. Also broke a few tiles in the process. Plus there was an extra $35 charge for that. Not expected, but things happen. When Rob was insulating the door frame, he sprayed this yellow insulation foam, and it went all over. All over the front of the brand new steel door, the frame, and all over the cement stair. I specifically asked Rob if that will come off, and he said it will just wipe down. No problem. He tried to install the storm door, but was unable to do it, and told us we needed to purchase a new storm door, and call back to reschedule that. But, he had this sticky white caulk all over the storm door, and didn't clean that up. The next day I called, and Laura and she said she would send the other Rob over to see what was going on. He came back a few days later and said that he was not sure what was the problem, but he could install the old storm door no problem. Rob and another guy came s to install the storm door, and it was fine. I called the company to ask them how to get the foam spray off the front door. We figured we could just clean it off, and there wouldn't be any issues. They said they would come by to see what it was. I showed him the insulation foam all over the door, frame and cement step. He was very defensive telling my husband and I that he doesn't have anything that would be that color. So he couldn't figure out what it was. And how he doubts it was any product him or his workers would use. (We tried to explain to him several times that we literally watched the other Rob spray it, and saw it go all over, and it dripped everywhere and was just a mess.) He tried to remove it with some chemical products, but none of it worked. Rob told me the only thing he could do was to sand and prime the whole door. But he said he did not have time to do it that day due to other commitments. I was pretty upset considering I felt I should have been a commitment too. This was saturday morning-Rob said he would call by the end of the day, or the next day to schedule that. It is now Tuesday morning, and have not heard anything. The door was installed, the screen door was installed, and so far that is fine. No problems with the actual job being done. But the professionalism that we encountered by both Robs was not that great. We now have a brand new white front door that is covered in yellow foam that won't come off, the frame is full of the same stuff, and the cement step. The screen door is also full of the white caulk on the door ledges. We now have to sand, prime and paint a brand new door.
