The guy is great! He did a good job, promptly and was courteous to my tenant. Someone threw a stone through my tenants window and looked all over for a board up service before calling Brian. The board up services didn't want to do it because it was such a small job. The only one who was willing to do it wouldn't come until the next day! I needed him immediately because I could not get there myself from 60 miles away and Brian went there within an hour of the initial call. I couldn't ask for better service.
Description of Work: He boarded a broken window, took the sash to the repair and re-installed the sash when it was finished.

Fantastic. The shutters needed a little readjustment to fit and he invented a way to fill some space so that the shutters fit beautifully and look perfect.
Description of Work: He took down old shutters on house and put up new ones. While here, there was a fallen branch in the back yard and he cut it up and hauled it off for me.

The cost is about 3000 and the date is approximate, the project was to drywall a room with a closet and the ceiling. He quoted 1 price and went back on it and asked for almost twice. The time total was almost 3 months to get just the 1 room done. Once done, he missed parts on the wall and ceiling. It wast flush and overall poorly done. He also wired the outlets and lighting/switches then wired it to the box. Since that time, i have electoral issues where my fuse box pops when you use the microwave/toaster (I have replaced both and still have the same issue). He was late or never showed up when he stated he would be on site. I helped him put in the ceiling! but he still wanted to charge me almost twice the original quote. I would not go back to him and I would suggest that none else does.
Description of Work: I hired him to drywall a room I framed and to run the electric to the fuse box. I had already purchased all of the drywall and tape, and paid an additional 450$ (approximate) for items he stated that he needed to do this job.

Response from Angel Handy Services Co
As much as I sincerely try to please each and every customer, sometimes it just isn’t possible. In this case, despite proof provided to the customer, he still doesn’t want to see that he is largely responsible for the outcome of the project. He claims the job cost twice as much as what was stated- not true! The estimate was written and it was billed as such. The reason why he thought it was twice the cost is that the walls and ceiling were estimated separately- in writing. After he reviewed his copy of the written estimate- he still wasn’t willing to concede what was plainly written. Further, as hard as this is to believe, he misunderstood the written estimate in an “unusual way”. Since he didn’t specify what materials he wanted to be used for the ceiling (drywall or ceiling tiles), the ceiling cost couldn’t be specified at that time. He wasn’t even sure at the time of the estimate that he wanted the ceiling done. He was already on a stressed budget with 4 kids and commuting from Durand IL to Chicago IL almost every day. It was written in the estimate that if the ceiling was to be done at the same time as the walls a discount would be given. After hearing his argument over the phone, it seemed that he thought both the ceiling and the walls would be done at just the wall estimated price, but discounted. Respectfully, It defies logic to think that over twice the work (because ceilings are more labor than walls) would be done at even less (discounted) cost than just doing the walls. There wasn’t any time lines given or expressed other than towards the end they said they were anxious to get a actual bedroom to sleep in since they had a lot of people in that house. I did tell him I would work as much as I could balancing different projects. To further the point of no specified time, a couple of times they accepted my offer to bring out my yard tractor because their grass was no longer a yard, it was a field. He never had time because of his commute time or workload. I felt sorry for this family because they had a few dogs with feces throughout the inside the house and the yard, a heap of boxes from Christmas just thrown outside the front door. I felt the kids should at least have a mowed yard to play in. As far as quality issues are addressed there was definite room for improvement. But the quality problem started with his work, not mine. He openly and freely admitted he was terrible at being handy with tools. He was actually the one who framed the walls. Not only were his walls not straight, they were incomplete, off standard, and not done to common practices. Further, I learned a lesson to thoroughly assess other peoples work before I estimate future work associated with it. Because of his framing, additional supplementary framing needed to be done just to try to make his efforts work. This was done at virtually cost but added to material cost of the estimate. Frankly, most his framing should have been torn out and started over. Keep in mind; he was given written estimates with “estimate” written at the very top. No quotes were written or implied. His statement of being upset because of helping me with the ceiling may need a little more clarification. He helped me for about 10 minutes. Two pieces of drywall that went around the lights got done a lot faster with the help of another set of hands. Keep in mind, when the estimate was written no materials were specified. Holding up a 4x8 ft piece of drywall is a lot harder than a lightweight 2x4 ceiling tile. Addressing his electrical issues- he had a microwave that kept tripping the circuit breaker at the panel. I noticed that everything in the kitchen was on one breaker. Not only did he have multiple small appliances that might be overloading the circuits, but electrical code states that at least two breakers should be associated with the kitchen. So I separated the one breaker into two breakers for the kitchen. If his circuits are still tripping I would recommend he adds up all the amperage that his kitchen is using and see if it’s overloaded. Maybe someone previously replaced a GFI receptacle improperly. What I did was not wrong or a wasted effort. It brought the kitchen to code and it was the first step in addressing his kitchens electrical issue. I am truly sorry that the customer is unhappy with the outcome of his projects. Unfortunately his review is based on his misunderstanding of the estimate and aggravation from of an overloaded personal budget.

Brian arrived on time and estimated that it would take him the day to do the work. (He charges $50 an hour/$400 day. He suggested skipping the Cable Organizer/Power Kit and just adding a normal outlet behind the mount where the TV would be installed. It was a $60 part and he felt it was more cost effective to just add the outlet. He also was able to take a wall plate and modify it to run the cables (HDMI, Optical) through the wall from the TV to behind the components near the floor. Initially Brian had to go to Menards, near my house, for the electrical supplies. Work commenced upon his return. One outlet had to be added near the floor for my components to be plugged in and one outlet had to be added higher up on the wall behind the TV mount. We do have access to the back of that wall through the garage, so Brian did make some small drywall cuts in the rear wall which he repaired upon completion. After the electrical was finished, Brian installed the wall mount for the TV and it looks great. The final touch was to run the cables for the TV from the mount area to the floor area. It was kind of tough to fish them through the wall but, after watching him try to get the wires through for a few minutes, I offered to help since I have a skinny arm. Once I stuck my scrawny arm in the wall and grabbed the cables, work was just about complete. Brian cleaned up after himself and did a fine job of fixing the drywall in my garage wall. He was also kind enough to leave me some wall repair plaster because I had a few small holes (unrelated to his work) that I needed to fill in. I will definitely call him as soon as our budget allows for our next home improvement project!
Description of Work: Brian was able to come out to my house about three days after I contacted him. The work was to add two outlets and install a wall mount for our TV. I had purchased the Cheetah Mounts Plasma LCD Flat Screen TV Articulating Full Motion Dual Arm Wall Mount Bracket and Flat Panel TV Cable Organizer Kit with Power Solution ahead of time.

Brian was able to determine the problem and fix a leak for us. He made several different trips to our home and even tho it was a small job he treated it like it was the most important job he ever had. We really appreciated the time and effort he put into fixing the problem and for being so personable. It was a pleasure having him in our home. I would definately call Brian if I ever have any kind of repair problem.

Wife's comments: First of all, I have to say that I really love my new bathroom. The finished product is wonderful. With that said: there were some unforseen issues that occurred, like having to send the bathtub back twice. First time it arrived with a crack on one corner, second time there were several spots that the acrylic had not been applied adequately during manufacturing. Neither of these things being the handyman's fault. I was informed of all these problems as they occurred, and the handyman seemed to be fairly skilled in dealing with them. BUT, I feel that the verbal estimate that was given prior to starting the project was misleading. The total (final) cost was given as somewhere between $5000 and $6000. I was lead to believe that it included all materials, as well as basic (cheaper) tub, vanity, toilet, flooring, shower tile, and light fixtures. After purchasing these items myself, along with ceramic tile for the floor and some materials used to apply it, the final bill I received was still approximately $6000, with $5000 of that labor alone. I realize that I had changed my mind about flooring, and decided to put in ceramic tile instead of vinyl, which may have accounted for some increase in material and labor costs, but I still feel that the final bill was high. I do not have an issue with the cost of materials used, mainly with the labor costs and the time it took to complete the work. My husband had called several bathroom remodeling places and been given an average labor cost of $3000 to $3500 for all the work we had had done, with the job completed in 1 week. With the problems encountered during the job, I assume those estimates may have been low, but that is still a difference of $1500 to $2000. And 3 to 4 weeks is simply too long to deal with not having a working shower. The fact that he works alone may account for the prolonged length of time it took to complete this job. Husband's comments: He was here way too long, he said 2 weeks, it took him 4 weeks. He charged way too much money for labor when he was really standing around accomplishing nothing most of the time. He also over-charged for the materials and would not give any receipts. This is the worst experience i have ever had with a handyman and would never recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: We had our bathroom totally stripped down and had everything replaced. New subfloor due to water damage. New drywall. Some electrical and plumbing work performed. Ceramic tile put down, as well as shower tile. New tub, vanity, toilet, mirror, light fixtures. trim, and door put in. Primer painted on walls and ceiling.

Response from Angel Handy Services Co
Customer satisfaction is always the goal with Angel Services. Every project is undertaken with the care and consideration as if it is “our house”. This report required extra consideration because this project was extraordinary. This customer represents one of an estimated 1000 contacts or interactions a year with customers and prospects. This job ranks up in the top three most memorable of all time. I was hired by the wife. Prior to the initiation of the remodel, she and I had gone over the scope of the project and what should be expected. I had expressly gone over the details that I generally work by myself and since I have other customers, there will be days when I will not be working on her bathroom to balance other customer needs. I told her I would give the vast majority of every week to her project until bathroom is done. This is a point that I made sure of since her shower was going to be disabled for an unknown amount of time. She repeatedly told me this is not a big deal because she could shower at work and the family frequently used their gym membership which had facilities. She and I talked about a complete tear out. During my assessment, she did not specify any desired fixtures other than not to have a more expensive whirlpool tub, but one that would be deeper if possible. We talked about the unusual integrity or stability of the floor. She mentioned due to her toilet overflowing a few times the floor was damaged. I told her I would address the floor once I learned more from the tear out to its condition and repair requirements. I could not bring myself to believe that the entire floor was damaged to the degree that it made the floor seem spongy throughout the room. Since we did not talk about specific fixtures and to gauge her initial thoughts I said “if you remodel the bathroom, anticipate spending around $5000-$6000. I had expressly told her that periodically during the project t I would be requiring progress payments for materials and consideration for labor as it was being completed. She thought this was acceptable and realistic. After the first week to ten days, I met the husband. With all sincerity, if I would have met him prior, I would never have taken on the project. After his first abusive outburst at me the wife admitted that “yeah, I think he actually chased away the last guy who was working around here.” Throughout the project, he would come home and complain about details that he should have been working out with his wife prior to my work. He would leave me abrasive phone messages throughout the week and weekends. He would complain about the labor costs. He told me “my buddies at work say a bathroom like this shouldn’t be more than $3500”. This eventually turned into “I called around and I have been told they (another company) only charges $3500 and could have it done in a week.” THIS STATEMENT FROM THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE EXTREMELY QUESTIONED. WHAT COMPANY OUT THERE GIVES PRICING ON A REMODEL WITHOUT SEEING THE ROOM/HOUSE OR THE LIST OF MATERIALS SPECIFIED? There were many dimensional sizing issues to this remodel that effect the estimate that any remodel company would need to know. He would also threaten to not pay me for my work unless I turned over all my business receipts to him. I provided him with itemized receipts from me since I furnished and supplied the materials, not someone else. He would exhibit odd behavior when I worked. He would wear sunglasses inside the house seemingly to keep someone from actually knowing what he is looking at. He would have his children call in to him throughout the day to update him on what I was doing. He would have meetings with his children in his truck with the windows up to have “secret talks” with them while I was working. He would write abrasive messages in the dust on my work trailer. During this project, his wife openly talked about how difficult he was making this project for her and how it was adding to an already an “unhealthy home environment.” As a side note, he also used extremely poor judgment by attempting to burn the bathroom demolition debris. He lighted on fire the debris pile that was about the size of a small car. The neighbors in the subdivision acted swiftly and the fire and police came out. Keep in mind he was burning during one of the worst draughts in history where it hasn’t rained in months. The cost of the bathroom was more for a couple of reasons. I had allocated $350 for the vanity, an average price for the size. The wife special ordered one that was $850. The faucet was fancy- much more than average. An average tub costs about $200. She ordered one at a cost of $650. I allocated $135 for a highly rated toilet. Her and the husband rejected it and spent close to $200 on their choice. The floor that was damaged needed to be completely torn out. Turns out 8 years earlier the husband and father in law tried to repair it with particle board wall paneling and what appeared to be a type of drywall compound or plaster. The electrical in the walls from the same remodel attempt was in need of correcting. The soffit was torn out. A door was requested to be put in. Instead of going with vinyl flooring (originally specified) like what was in there, the wife later specified she wanted ceramic tile put in. I told her prior to doing it that it would add to the cost. I also told her prior to removing and replacing the entire floor it would add to the cost. Both times she agreed to the added work and costs. These added work authorizations also added to the time it took to complete the bathroom. As a side note, as a courtesy I handled the defect issues with the new bath tub. I did not supply the bath tub, yet I called the manufacture spending a lot of my time over several days to keep the project going. Needless to say, having to re-order a bath tub twice will add to delays. It should also be mentioned that the customer had very poor water pressure and wanted it fixed. The water was not much more than a trickle coming out of the faucets. I also took the time to repair this for them.

We got them off of Angie's List. He's a pleasant guy as far as that goes. He talked continuously and it took a lot of time. He didn't use a tester for anything. He'd go to the store and then come back and then say he had to go back to the store, etc. and it took up a lot of time. It's nice that he likes to explain stuff but he spent way too much time explaining stuff. We had an exterior light that wasn't working and my husband had a new one in case it was the light that was bad. So he took off the old light and put on the new one and when he turned it on it still didn't work. So he did something. A little later he tried to switch again and it did work so he left it that way. Now it will work sometimes and sometimes it didn't. We will have to hire someone else to come out and figure out why that light doesn't work. he stuck a screw driver in the socket to short it out and in the process he made our stove and freezer quit working. 2 weeks later we smelled something horrible and found out the freezer had stopped working. He did the electric for the dryer hook up. For what he did I think the price was a little high. He was well groomed, nice and pleasant but he wasn't professional in his work. He left it at there must be a short somewhere and didn't have a meter to check it out.

I regret that this customer had a less than satisfactory experience with the service call. Angel Services always strives for customer satisfaction. Before giving a business perspective on the service call, it should be mentioned that there was never a screwdriver inserted into any wall outlets like the customer has stated. I use a Greenlee GT-11 circuit tester to test for energized outlets. To the person unfamiliar with electricity or electrical tools, this tool may look like a screwdriver, but is completely safe and saves time and money for trouble shooting circuits. I regret that she thought I talked too much. The residence was at least a 100 year old house and any work that has to be done to it is complicated by generations of cut-rate workmanship and a history of disregard for codes and standards. Looking at the surroundings it was apparent that these folks had limited means. I didn’t just want to “pass” on the projects . It was obvious these things needed attention. As I started the requested projects, I needed to explain to them how the non-conforming aspects were going to affect their projects. I would have explained it to the husband but he didn’t make himself available to go over the issues. They wanted an exterior light installed at the peak of their two story house, an interior light installed on their front porch, and the main project was their clothes dryer hooked up. The exterior light was furnished by the customer. It was not used, but not new. It looked like it was old from a garage sale. I mentioned to them the benefits to putting up a “new” one. They didn’t care. The front porch light went up without any issues. The exterior light was wired in properly and worked initially. It stopped working before I was done with the other projects. I double checked my connections and they were good. The wiring on the inside of the house regarding the exterior light was complicated by generations of reworked switches , add- ons , and modifications that would make trouble shooting a lengthy project. Ironically, the husband was using a hot-plate in next room which I think tripped the circuit. They didn’t want to pay to have the circuit checked. The dryer had hurdles to overcome. The existing wiring configuration would not meet code and was actually a hazard if it was to be used. I had to explain to them how I would have to get new and larger wire. I would also have to get new breakers to match the circuit requirements. They saved money by me having enough heavier guage wire on the truck. If they had to buy a roll of it, they would have easily had $50 of scrap left over. At this point I also mentioned to them the high risk and fire hazard they had by their main electrical panel. You literally could not get within eight feet of the panel because of a solid wall of stored items. The front of the panel had been previously removed and missing which exposed non-compliance issues like wire splicing. I believe I charged them around $180 for all this work AND materials. This is extremely reasonable.

The handyman that came out was excellent with everything he did. I paid $400 for the first day, which was a full day's work and then $200 for the second day, which was for about five hours. He was very personable. He knew what he was doing. He told me about the things that he was unsure of, he told me right up front and told me what he would recommend on those jobs. So I had somebody else do the little things that he didn't do but he was very up front about that. He didn't charge me for any of the running ground he did. He was very good in his pricing.

We had to have the pump that is in the basement, because we have a well out here, upgraded. We kept having problems with our pump turning on and off. We didn't realize our pump was too small. We finally had someone come out and look at it and see what the problem was. He told us it is a holding tank for water and it is too small. It was turning on and off all of the time because it was having to draw water all of the time and it could end up burning the well out. We investigated and the price was right on where it should be. The quality of the work was excellent and he was very responsive, within a week. He was here on time. I am going to use him again in the future for electrical work.
Description of Work: I used Angel Handy Services to install a well pump downstairs.

He is very good at what he does and stands behind his work and I've had him do numerous things. He's no relation, friend, but he is a hard worker and I'm very satisfied. He mows my lawn, and has done numerous repairs in my home to include a stool removal and replacement.
Description of Work: This is my 2nd year with Angel Handyman Services. The owner, Brian has always been very professional and done everything I've requested him to do around my home. I saw where someone gave him an "F" because he didn't "sound" as if he wanted the job. That type of rating is totally unwarranted in my opinion.

His esitmate for gutter installations and repair was reasonable, so we chose him, as we were on a budget. As my husband had a specific gutter leaf product in mind, he ordered it and when it came, tried to install it. Unfortunately, the house was not built to usual standards and he had to ship the product back and replace it with one that would fit. When the replacement product came, he installed it in two days. He had other jobs that often conflicted with the on-going projects at the house, and he lost our phone number more than once, so we never knew when to expect him. When I called him, he did answer the phone and set up a new date to come to the house. When he did come, he usually completed whatever job he tackeled. The roof leak is repaired, the foot is replaced, and the bathroom ceiling replastered. Saying that, he failed to clean the plaster off the bathroom wall, and left all the material behind on the floor. Instead of cladding the wood frames (which we found out were rotten), he replaced the frames with weatherproof plastic frames. Again, we appreciated his finding the material for us. However, he left all the rotten wood lying on the ground. He purchased long-term light bulbs to replace the broken one that was mis-centered above the stair landing, and after a lot of effort, replaced the light. (This must have taken a long time, as that part of the bill was $60.) If he hadn't lost our number so much and turned up when he said he would, and if he was more detail oriented at the finish of a job, we would use him again. As it is, however, I don't think we will call him again.
Description of Work: Roof leak repair, change the stack base over the bathroom. Repair the ceiling where leak broke through. Install leaf guards around the house gutters. Clad three second story window frames. Replace a lightbulb in a two story stairwell that was off-center.

Response from Angel Handy Services Co
In brief, I appreciate the members allowing me to work on their house. During the time period of working on their house, it wasnt as much as I "lost" their phone number, it was that my phone was damaged twice in a short period of time (not the best of luck). The first time the side port of my phone got damaged so it could neither charge or plug in to recapture contacts. The second time it fell out of my pocket and got ruined by the equipment that I was using. Also, I have to just comment on "the actual price" of a project. As they mentioned, I furnished to their specification some gutter guards. I purchased them on line, recieved them, delivered them, tried to install them (which in actualization they couldn't work on their house). I spent over an hour with their engineering dept trying to see if they would work- but no luck. So thusly I had to call back the manufacture to see if there was something that would work (unfortunately not). So thusly I had to call the company again to get a return autorization, repack and drop off at UPS. And finally keep an eye open for the credit memo and follow up to let the company know that the credit memo should be a refund because no other product will work. After this, I picked up locally the best product that I know and proceeded to deliver them out and install them. Lastly, a light bulb turns into $60 dollars when I have to furnish them and deliver them into their gated community which takes 10 minutes each way once you get past the gate. They lived 20 minutes each way to the gate. I actually change 3 light bulbs for them on their 2nd floor, one of which was about 12 feet up and 6-8 feet to the center of their staircase. This required a tall articulating ladder or scaffold to reach. I don't think $60 is unreasonable for a service call that realistically had a "hazard" to it. Again, I truely do appreciate these nice people the opportunity to work on their house.

I don't remember this phone call and have honestly think he has mistaken another company for mine. I only get about six calls a year for appliance repair. I also think it is unfair to wait 6 months to give a poor review to a company that may or may not actually be the one contacted.
