I bought this Big Deal specifically because I didn't think I could do a good job of caulking the seam behind the kitchen sink, where the counter meets the backsplash and gets a real beating with washing water. Because caulking the counter didn't fill the time I paid for, I also asked JT to recaulk the seams around the bathtub and add grout in the few small spots where it was beginning to break open in my otherwise flawless 1950s tile shower wall. The first disappointment was the foreman's dismissal of the need for caulking behind the sink. If I hadn't prepaid JT through a Big Deal, I would have asked them to leave at this point, but frankly, I was stunned completely speechless at their statement that "we don't usually caulk behind the sink." Yes, that practice is nuts. I researched the issue before writing this review. At that point, however, instead of keeping them waiting while I went upstairs to look the issue up, I allowed them to caulk the counter seam everywhere except behind the sink, where the seam does indeed most need caulking to prevent leaking into the cabinet under the sink. The bead is beautiful... where they bothered to place it. The second disappointment was with the bathtub seams. They caulked nicely inside the tub and partway down the outside of the tub. Instead of continuing the bead evenly to the floor, so that it would look uniform, they blended it in about halfway. Someone with real pride in their work would have finished the few inches of bead, but I didn't fuss. However, I did point out a half-inch area just beyond the intersection of the tub and the floor where there was no longer any grout or caulk. Instead of reaching a few inches over with the bead that was still on his finger, though, the workman said something about how water must have come out of the tub and damaged that area. That is truly a workman with no pride in his work. He does exactly what he's told and no more. Half an inch! Before they left, the crew manager glowed as he pointed out that the crew had added some kind of protective seal coating over ALL the grout on the shower wall; no extra charge. I was impressed enough to make up a little for the first two disappointments. But less than a year later, I began seeing dark spots on that "sealed" grout -- blackened areas that had never appeared in the 14 years I'd used and cleaned the bathroom. The group showed up on time, were respectful (at least to my face), protected my property with heavy drop cloths, and cleaned up almost perfectly. So why wouldn't I hire them again? Because the foreman either lied about the need for caulking behind the sink, was ignorant about the need, or was too lazy to work in that awkward spot. Whichever reason the JT folks "don't usually caulk behind the sink," it's unprofessional. Further, since I now have black spots on the previously clean grout, their refusal to work behind the sink leads me to wonder whether they actually put the layer of seal coating on the upstairs wall -- especially since their workman couldn't be bothered with a 1/2-inch opening which would have taken less than a minute to caulk beautifully with the bead that was still on his finger.
Description of Work: Caulk the seal between kitchen counter and backsplash, except where I most needed their help: behind the sink. Caulked and grouted upstairs tub seams and tile wall. I don't remember the exact date of service or cost of the Big Deal, but JT charged more than the Big Deal price because the requested work went over the agreed-upon time frame. Whatever the charge was, it was fair.

They did a good job. They could not finish the job in the time allotted. I had to finish it, so, that was a little disappointing. They did what they said they would do. I thought that a little bathroom being done by two men could have been done. There were no problems. Their work was fine and I would not use them again.

It went well. I read their reviews since I bought a big deal. Similar to other reviews it was a negotiation to get enough out of the time offered in the big deal. There are apparently some undisclosed fine print that is not up - I had a small drywall job and a small area that needed to be painted. When they showed up for me to show them I was told that the deal was either for 1 person for 4 hours or 2 for 2 hours. Fine by me but the other fine print not on the deal is that it is suppose to be for one job in the same locations - painting 20 feet away is a whole different job. I asked why one guy would have to sit and watch the other guy work if they were going the 2 guys for 2 hours route. Eventually we came to an agreement for all the drywall work to be done and a small piece of the small paint job to get done. The work done was great, they were friendly and very clean. I am extremely happy how it looks.

We signed the contract and work was begun on February 4, 2012. The work was completed on February 9, 2012. The work done was in the kitchen, the foyer, the dining room, the living room (great room), and part of the hallway. They repaired the drywall in each of these rooms - they repaired nail-pops or cracks with plaster compound/drywall mud. When the team left the house - the drywall was fine, but within eight/nine months after the work was completed the drywall began cracking again. Above the cabinets in the kitchen is where I noticed the cracking in the drywall first and as I checked the other areas, there was cracking in these places as well. The cracking in these areas has been progressive and has been getting worse. The worse of the cracks are in the ceiling. I contacted the contractor and he stopped over at my house yesterday (October 10, 2013) to discuss the issue, but during our discussion he refused any resolve, and I let him know that I would be reaching out to Angies's List regarding this work and the refusal to redo or credit us for this poorly done work.

Response from J T General Contracting
Response: In going back to see the customers concerns and discussing the issues thoroughly some 20 months after the work had been completed. We repaired several areas throughout the house. The main cracks were around a access hatch to attic and in the vicinity of that exact area (within 10-12 feet) where someone was walking on the ceiling joists in the attic, causing movement and pressure on the drywall below it. This in fact was the cause of cracking. The owner confirmed that there was an electrician up there doing some work, but they did not step on those areas. Some areas in homes will crack due to movement or settling and may return in time, regardless of repair type. In either case we can not warranty these types of repairs. Thanks for reading! JT

I purchased a Big Deal for 4 man hours of drywall repair. I explained that I had two sections of drywall which were cut out and that 1 sheet of drywall would be plenty. I asked if he could pick up the drywall and said I would pay him for it. Jim emailed me back saying that "I can bring drywall, but it would take 30 minutes off of time, and cost is $10.00. I will be there at approximately 8:30 to 9:00am on Oct 8 Tuesday. Thanks for the description and I will see you then. JT" Instead of Jim, two men arrived at 9:10 am. Rather than charging me 1/2 hour out of four hours, they charged me 1/2 hour and worked for 1-1/2 hour. That adds up to a charge of 1 man hour to pick up a sheet of drywall and 3 man hours of work. Jim could not understand why I expected to have 3-1/2 man hours of work or 1 hour and 45 minutes with two men. He had several reasons. He said that is "the way it works." He said that my job wasn't a "repair" but a "replacement," which he said was not really eligible with the coupon. (Keep in mind that I sent him an e-mail a week earlier stating exactly what the work was. In that e-mail I purposely over-estimated the size each of my two holes.) Afterwards he told me that drywall repair meants they patch a hole with drywall mud... that they do not patch with drywall. I didn't see anything stating that the coupon was only for a patch small enough to patch with mud. I would never hire someone to put a bit of drywall mud in a hole. I can do that myself!!! Jim also stated that he charged a flat fee of $50 to puick up drywall. Again, that was entirely different than his email stated. I offered to send him a copy of the email message he'd sent to me but he continued to argue and argue. He was unable to see my point and continued to try to "explain it" to me. One of the two men seemed the more knowlegable and he worked the entire time. The second man looked to the first for guidance and spent a good deal of time looking over the shoulder of the first. One area was patched in with more peices than necessary. Rather than cutting out a square in the middle he cut small peices to patch around an old small electrical box. What could have been easily patched with 1 peice was patched with several. Despite the fact that the knowlegable man told me it would take 1-1/2 hours at most, none of second area (with all the peices) was taped or mudded at all since my 1-1/2 hour was up. I do understand how the process works. I have patched in drywall before. I understand cutting the edges straight, anchoring with wood when necessary, etc. Why TWO people could not patch 2 small areas and put at least one layer of mudd up in 1-1/2 hours, I don't know. I declined to pay the $10 for the drywall since I was charged full man hour (double) for two men to pick up a sheet of drywall. Jim and I discussed this ad nauseam on the phone twice. His men sat in their truck on my driveway. Jim could not understand the difference between 1/2 of a man hour for one person and 1/2 of a man hour for two people. He stated that he would send the $10 charge to "collections." Had he given my job 15 more minutes, the second section would have been taped and had 1 coat of mud, I would have been satisfied, and I'd have paid him the $10 for the drywall. Jim's crew did not leave the remaining drywall here. Jim's crew laid down tarp and cleaned up.
Description of Work: Patch 2 sections of drywall... each section approximately 2x3.

Response from J T General Contracting
In response to the outlines comments: Not only was the fact explained about 30 minutes time for drywall pickup in an email, but it was also written on the contract with the cost per sheet of drywall, signed and accepted. The customer was explained the amount of time left according to the terms upon arrival and signing of the contract. At no point before the end of the job, did the customer call or state that there was any misinterpretation. After signing off on work just refused to pay the agreed $10.00 for the drywall. Of course we did not leave the remainder as it was not paid for. The truck goes out to jobs as a two man crew, based on the varied amounts of work, and combination of covering and cleanup. The guys work in conjunction on every job. Taping and plastering, cut out and replacement, scraping, removal, and clean up. Everyone knows what to do. Areas are not always as easy as a person might think. In general, there are approximately 3 coats to cover and blend areas to feather into existing drywall, etc. The process needs to be dried in between coats, and for final sanding. Open areas are one thing, confined areas along obstructions is another, making additional work to blend. Thanks for reading! JT

Called Jim and received a callback within a few hours. He came by, we discussed the work needed and he provided a quote. We scheduled the work within the week, they came on time, immediately began the work and left when finished. Brilliant work done. I had 4 major problems with my living room ceiling -- old water damage in a 1920's bungalow, after the work, I can't find where the damage was! Jim is great, professional and fair, as are the guys working with him.

Excellent work. Owner of company and 2 workmen showed up on time at 8 am. The 2 men worked for 4 hours to do all the above work. They worked hard without breaks and were quiet and clean too. I would definitely recommend this company for regrout/recaulk/sealing of tile. I thought price was very fair. I was so pleased I gave an additional tip to the 2 men who did all the work as well.

After an initial meeting and look over John? had a small army of guys hit upstairs, down stairs and outside at the same time. I let him use the garage as a work prep area to mix grout, cut tile and set up tools. He acid washed the upstairs tile floor and went above and beyond to adjust a pedestal sink, caulk it and a floor area where grout had cracked out. I ended up leaving him to handle the job of which he left a note and the place looking way better then when he 1st came in. Good thing I had kept spare tiles from 12 years ago when we 1st did the bathrooms. Everything turned out well. Grout and caulking was finished well. New tiles where cut and fitted well. All done with in one day which worked well. Yes I would call him back in the future.. Rick
Description of Work: Re grouted & caulked (2) bath/shower area's (part of original "Big Deal" $89.00 each) I also had him retile a ledge on 1st floor shower window and 2nd floor tub area...both were cracked. Also had him regrout the 1st floor bath glass block window..,,,outside.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. They were great. I paid more than the Big Deal price but they stayed longer than the 4 hours. It was 2 men for 2 hours or 1 man for 4 hours and 2 people came and they were here for about an hour after because they did a little bit extra work. It was $110 because they normally charge $55 an hour. They were prompt and they were very detailed in what they did, and they did a great job. I definitely would use them again.

Jim and his crew of four did a great job with this. I'm redoing my entire attached garage (complete demo and remodel). I have most of the work covered, but for the structural piece I needed it done by a professional and J T General Contracting didn't disappoint. They were on time. Finished the job in one day. I was able to give my input were needed and Jim listened to my needs and adjusted where necessary. The quality of work was great. The crew was professional and kept the space clean. Jim also managed to fix a few things in the garage outside the scope of agreed upon work for a discount, which was highly appreciated. The end result is a safe garage with a support beam that is very well secured and ready for me to start dry-walling. I have a few more projects in the next couple of years in this house and will sure be a repeat customer.

It went fine. They didn't have a matching gray color which I thought was a little peculiar, but otherwise it looks pretty good and I guess they did what they were supposed to do. They charged me something like $40 for materials, which I also thought was weird since it was just a small amount of grout. They didn't really file down the existing grout that far, so we have patches of slightly mismatch gray, which I'm not too upset about, but two guys for four hours it didn't seem like they did a whole lot of work. I was surprised to be charged for materials which I have to imagine were probably in reality more like $3 or $4. We didn't use a whole lot of grout to sort of patch and cover up what was already there. I don't have much for a comparison, but I feel like it was a very average experience. I didn't think they went above and beyond. I thought they were punctual. They explained the color matching situation ahead of time and they were good about cleaning up after themselves, so I think they conducted themselves well.
