Contractor, Daniel L Converse doing business as A 1 Concrete, was supposed to pour 30 x 32 garage floor slab and finish to a "burnt finish". The finished floor was left with concrete creme slush slung and dried across the top of the floor in numerous areas. Area by floor drain left very rough. Area where radiant heat tubing exits floor left uneven and not troweled. The slab was to be sloped 1 1/2" towards the drain and yet I have a puddle of water (Approx 5' diameter) sitting on the slab at the east garage door. The floor perimeter line is grossly uneven (WAVY) up to 2". I checked it with a laser. I had to call the contractor several times in order for him to fix the floor surface. Contractor complained that he had to spend money on grinding the floor surface. They left grind marks (circles) in the slab surface where the grinder was stationary while grinding. I had to apply two coats of floor Epoxy to adequately seal the floor and make it look fairly presentable. The contractor was initially paid $300 to seal floor and did not do so, he said he would refund $300 and has not done so and it's been almost 3 months. The contractor refuses to answer his phone or texts. The contractor said he would furnish an invoice for the amount of $5500.00. (This includes material and labor). I have not seen an invoice yet. Here is the chain of events that transpired: 1. Dan (A 1 Concrete) came out and estimated the job and WAS told it would have radiant heat in floor, (He will tell you that he was NOT told it was going to have radiant heat), and it really doesn't make much difference anyway, it's all poured the same way. Ask any concrete contractor that KNOWS how to pour and finish concrete. 2. They showed up at 8:30 am with five guys and no 20' concrete extension chute (which then took them about 1.5 hours to go get) 3. The finisher freaked out about "No risers under the mesh re-enforcement. I had to tell them that you don't put risers under the mesh, because then you can't walk on it. I had to tell them to pull the mesh up as you pour. (All reputable contractors do it this way). 4. If they didn't want to pour it, they should have told me. 5. They didn't start pouring until around noon. 6. They had the concrete truck driver put so much water in the mix, it came out like "Water / Soup", this way they wouldn't have to work so hard in "Pulling" the mix to the back of the garage. 7. By pouring the mix so thin, the contractor was unable to keep the slab perimeter line even, hence the "Wavy Lines". 8. By pouring the mix so thin, and pouring late, they should have realized that it's going to take a lot longer to finish and that they would be there late. 9. Later I was told by Dan Converse (Owner), "My finisher fessed up that he went for a few beers with my brother while the concrete was setting up". I can't even begin to express what a nightmare this has been from the start and it's still not over. Moral of this story....... DO A BACKGROUND CHECK ON FLY-BY-NIGHT CONTRACTORS ... or people that call themselves contractors and give the word "Contractor" a bad name!
