BENSON'S APPLIANCE

On 1/9/13, I purchased a Maytag microwave model #MMV4203WW and Maytag dishwasher model #MDB8949SAB from Benson's in Peoria, Il. After installation, I noticed that the metal flap in the microwave (vented to the outside) has a very "tinny" sound when the wind blows outside. I called to complain about that noise and stated it sounds like I have placed a cheap product in my home.The person who andwered the phone stated, "Oh ya (sic), Whirlpool bought out Maytag and really cheapened them." I told him I have purchased every Maytag appliance in numerous homes from them since 1980, and would have appreciated knowing that BEFORE I purchased the items. I could not have the microwave removed because I had a contractor scheduled to come to install tile on the kitchen backsplash (the microwave had to be in before the tile). At the same time I complained that the dishwasher was not getting the dishes clean, and the piece at the end of the upper rack kept falling off. The upper rack was loose, as was the model I looked at in the showroom. I asked if I had received the floor model, and was told "no." I continued to inform them that my dishes were not getting clean. Then they told me that in addition to running the hot water at the sink before every load (which I had already been doing), I had to use the "added heat" option for every load. Then one of the servicemen told me I had to change from liquid dishwasher detergent to the "pods." So I purchased the most expensive brand I could find, "Finish Quantum." I called Benson's the fifth time and spoke to Mr. Scott Benson and reiterated my previous requests that I wanted the dishwasher removed from my home and a full refund for the product and installation. He said tha he would only give me $572.75 back (there was a 20% re-stocking fee) and the cost of installation would not be refunded. When I went to purchase a Kenmore Elite dishwasher (which gets every dish clean every time), from Sears, the sales associate showed me a sign in Sears which states that they do not charge sales tax on built in appliances in Illinois. Benson's had charged me $73.59 for sales tax alone on the 2 items I purchased. I reported this to the Consumer Protection Division, Office of the Attorney General. Mr. Benson replied that they "do charge sales tax on all of the products we sell because we are not considered a ""Construction Contractor or real estate developer." He went on to state, "We did perform service on the dishwasher when it was in her home,but found that the unit was functioning electrically and mechanically as designed by the Whirlpool company." In my opinion that statement completely ignores my complaint that the dishwasher did not clean the dishes!! He went on to state, We are sorry we could not please (customer's name), but feel we did try. Perhaps Benson's ad, "Pleasing you pleases us," should be eliminated from their advertising. I also learned that Consumer Reports rates this dishwasher very low in cleaning ability.
