NR provided the most detailed proposal and info about its company. They were competitively priced and easy to contact throughout the bidding process and project. They are continually seeking to fine tune their business which includes replacing subcontractors when needed. The drywall sub is the weakest but the rest are wonderful--very professional. We would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them. However, there were some issues: they do not seem too concerned about village inspections and only had a NR rep or sub on site for 2 (of 8); they would bill for portions of the project that were not yet complete or inspected which we found problematic; they are also quite aggressive with billing (once sent an invoice via email on Friday PM and indicated that someone would drop by at 8 am on Monday to collect payment) and need to better communicate expectations. In hindsight, our payout schedule was also too detailed (too many payments); 4 or 5 larger payments would have been fine.
Description of Work: We have a raised ranch and needed some additional living space. We expanded our family room by 300 sq ft (doubled it's former size), added an exterior deck, upgraded our electrical service to 200 amp, relocated an existing brick paver patio and installed a new retaining wall (since we changed some of the elevation in the yard). The job was finished within a 3 month time frame and we started in mid-October. The family room was completed in 7 weeks which thrilled us as we could enjoy the new space for Christmas.

It was the best experience we ever had for home repair. Our sales guy was terrific - always on time, always prompt returning calls. Provided a packet containing certificate of liability insurance, references, testimonials, info about the company, 2006 award from BBB for a complaint-free 2006, and membership in NARI without our having to ask. Once we hired them, he provided a detailed contract that listed each team assigned to our project, with the names and cell phone of every project manager. Our city was contacted to determine what was needed to obtain a permit. Project team workers were on time, friendly, seemed to due quality work, cleaned up and finished the entire project on time (in 6 days). We had a question on billing that was addressed and resolved to our satisfaction immediately.
Description of Work: A portion of our roof needed to be redesigned (re-pitched) to prevent ice damming which caused leaking. We added an addition 11 years ago, and the roof design where the addition met the breakfast nook was faulty. Work included: design, removing the roof framing over the breakfast nook, raised walls and peaks to accommodate new roof line, re-shingling with appropriate flashing, ice and water shield, adding gutters and re-siding a portion of the house.

In a word, GREAT! Each person at Neighborhood Remodelers is a professional -- totally focused on top-notch performance and client satisfaction. Luke is the salesman for the company and his wife Kerin is the president. Mike, Bill and Chuck are the foremen who plan, schedule and perform the work and supervise any specialists they have to bring in. I can't say enough good things about these 5 people! Their expertise, dedication and integrity are readily evident, in the "day to day" AND in the finished project. Chuck, who framed out our place, said "I'm really proud of this house!" He has good reason to be! They all have. The house was completed in 5 months; one month earlier than anticipated. That's due to disciplined and knowledgeable work crews who were well organized, resulting in very little "down time". At every turn, our suggestions were listened to and in fact, welcomed. We're happy with our new home and proud to recommend Neighborhood Remodelers to anyone who wants the best!!
Description of Work: A complete renovation of our single-family, two-story house, right down to the foundation, with an 18' x 20' addition. Complete sidewalk replacement from parkway to alley. All work done per architect plans; with a projected schedule of six months from demolition to completion. All new electrical, HVAC, plumbing, framing, flooring, drywall, insulation, painting, siding, roofing, windows, gutters, soffit & fascia, concrete steps and oak cabinetry and, yes, the kitchen sink! We built "back & up"; transforming a 1200 sq. ft. Cape Cod from 1944 into my wife's "dream home." 2700' of beautiful living space on 3 levels: custom kitchen with cooking island & pantry, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths & powder room, library, living & dining combination, basement family room, music room, crafts room, chapel, walk-in closets and a handsome front porch and vestibule. Our house is easily the best on our block and one of the finest in our area. The neighbors couldn't be happier. The "ugly duckling" is the swan!!!

I am very happy with this company. We will be hiring them again to do additional work for us. They were very good about cleaning up after themselves during the whole process. They never left my house in a mess. They were very good about dealing with my 100 plus pound dog. I never felt that they were an intrusion in my lifestyle. They did some additional work we didn't notice for no additional cost. I was happy with everyone we dealt with. The office staff/sales rep and men who came out to do the work were of the utmost professionalism.

Luke came out and gave a quick and accurate estimate. The work started quickly with the first phase being completed within a few days. All efforts were made to keep dust to a minimum. Each day the workers cleaned up prior to leaving. While all jobs have a few bumps in the road, all of our issues were addressed by Luke quickly and to our satisfaction.

We are very happy with the work that Neighborhood Remodelers performed on our house. They exceeded our expectations & the crews did a fantastic job. NR was always just a phone call away & always answered our questions promptly. NR worked efficiently & the craftsmanship was excellent. When changes were brought up mid-project, they always listened & were willing to cooperate & offered many helpful suggestions. Everyone involved (Chuck, Bill, Mike, Luke, Dean, Mario, Pete, Steve, Brad, Abel, Frank, Angel, Scott, Mike I., & Kerin & Sam in the office) made us feel like they wanted to do a good job & cared about the end product. Neighborhood Remodelers comes very highly recommended.

We have an 85 year old house and nothing is level or square anymore. They did a superb job on everything. They would have finished sooner except that I had a lot of special order items that they had to wait on and that slowed the progress down. If ever I had a question, they would call me right back. About 3 months after they were done, the fan in the bathroom started a humming sound. They came right out and fixed it the next day, honoring their 2 year warranty. They are just really good at what they do.
Description of Work: They installed a big family room about the size of 25x25 square feet and took a small bathroom and expanded it into a 10x14 square foot bathroom with 7 foot vanity and a big walk in shower. They put in plumbing, electricity and hardwood floors. It took 2 guys 6 to 8 weeks to complete.

Their website contains the following information on their home page: "Interior residential design specializing in additions, kitchens, basements and bathrooms, whatever size, we can handle any interior residential project." However, here is an e-mail I received from them; "Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, this is too small a job for us during our busy season." So, this would lead one to believe their website needs to be amended to reflect a different policy during their busy season. Perhaps they can indicate when their busy season starts and ends?
Description of Work: Seeking estimates for basement (including installation of a master bathroom) and kitchen remodeling, I e-mailed Neighborhood Remodelers and asked for an estimate. This work would include relocating the stairs which go from the main level into the basement (involves cutting floor joists) and then remodeling the kitchen, given additional space would be available due to the stair relocation. I've received estimates ranging from $36,000 (excluding fixtures, countertops etc) to $100,000 (all inclusive) so I wanted to get another estimate before making a decision.

Good friends of ours who are Angie's List members also, referred us to Neighborhood Remodelers. Upon calling for an appt. we spoke with Sam & she set it up for the following week. She was so warm & friendly, that right away we felt a good vibe about the company. The sales rep Luke came out for a consultation. He was to the point & was very knowledgeable. He emailed our proposal 3 days later. That was the fastest & most thorough quote out of all 5 that we got. After making a few changes, we scheduled a 2nd appt. to meet with Luke, our project manager Mike Cooper & our foreman Raphael. We walked through the condo, specifying what was to be done, went over products to be purchased & set up a schedule. NR started the proj. right on schedule. They protected the work area the day they started & kept my home as clean as possible throughout. I was very impressed with the communication & the finished product. Neighborhood Remodelers brought our condo from the 1950's to the 21st century!!
Description of Work: Remodel of our full condo, which included a kitchen (new cabinets, countertops & appliances). We gutted & completely remodeled 2 bathrooms, tore up ugly old carpeting & replaced with new hardwood flooring. Also, had the entire condo painted.

Our expectations were high after meeting Luke, the salesman. He assured us that the project manager, Marek, would walk us through each step. Luke and Marek were thorough and detail oriented. We were not disappointed! Each step was completed with ease; communication was excellent. We were able to make quick work of the often overwhelming task of choosing cabinets, tile, paint color, granite, appliances, etc. Marek's crew was efficient and respectful as they created our new living space.
Description of Work: We had a complete kitchen remodel including the addition of a family room. NR "gutted" the entire kitchen and remodeled every aspect of it -electric, windows, walls, flooring, cabinets, counters and painting. They redesigned the layout to flow seamlessly into the new addition.

Neighborhood Remodelers is prompt, organized and efficient. My job came out exactly, as the drawings in the beginning had shown, on time and under budget. Special consideration was given to detail and accuracy when fixtures, appliances, and cabinetry etc, were installed. They helped me in my decision-making processes, advising me on key points that may have been overlooked. It is because of this special vigilance, everything turned out beautifully & exactly as I wanted. The granite contractor that I chose at the recommendation of Neighborhood Remodelers, did an exemplary job in my kitchen and bath. The color of my Craftmaid cabinets is rich and unique and the quality is top notch. I chose distinctive slate where each piece is different. The care taken in installation ensured that the most stunning & colorful cuts were utilized. The end result is breathtaking & mostly due to my contractor Arthur's special care. My foreman Mike Cooper did a great job saving me money on fixtures etc.

Luke was our initial contact, and their response time was prompt. Their hands-on involvement in all the pre-construction steps helped our decision to use them. They came and started on-time as projected, and worked diligently. Removed old framing, built out 2 new closets, enclosed a laundry room, and then coordinated with subs on carpeting, electric, and more. Matt was our foreman, onsite each day, and very pleasant to deal with. Very patient with our many detailed questions, and always with a smile on his face. We did face some delay on items, and some things (the rebuilt bar) that were glossed over initially ended up becoming larger issues when it was time to do them, leading to additional costs. We also had several punchlist items that took a few days extra to complete, but Matt took care of them as well. In the end, we have a beautiful new floor of usable, living space. We are very happy with the outcome, and would consider using them again.
Description of Work: Full basement remodel including framing off laundry and furnace rooms, closing a ceiling, adding several zones of lighting, wiring for sound, electrical, phone/cable, building new glass-top bar with step stool, installing tile around the bar, and carpeting majority of basement.

I had high hopes for this company when I met Luke, their sales guy. He put me at ease. He assured me that there would be a project manager in touch with me all the time, keeping me informed and that he would be working directly with the foreman. Not the case at all. I had to play foreman. Going to my house (which I did not live in) nightly to see what was going on and point out things they were doing wrong. A few examples. I stressed insulation of the back enclosed porch. Insulate the floor well. I could tell that wasn't done and when I called them on it, I got "I saw them do it" from Mike Cooper, the project manager, I don't know I wasn't there and I think so. I had them tear up the floor. I was told I would have to pay them again. No insulation. Floor wasn't level before laying upstairs bathroom tile. I tried to stop the man 3 times and each day more would be done. Tile grout washed down tub. Plumbing needed to be replaced. Cleaning it out of tub has ruined enamel.
Description of Work: I hired NR for a lot of work in my Chicago Bungalow. Incorporating the enclosed back porch as part of the kitchen. Opening up stairwell going up to dormered attic. Finishing dormered attic, with full bath upstairs. Remodeling main floor bath. Some things were done nicely, however, the bad out weighed the good by far.

Work did not start until nearly 6 weeks after signing the contract. Sub for the concrete work and crawl space worked efficiently, but at the end of the job left a pile of dirt in our back yard that they said we would need because of settling near the addition. We have not seen any settling 6 months later, and are left with a pile of dirt. The whole project was disorganized; Luke, then Chris, then Mike would say a sub was coming on one day, then of course wouldn't show up. This happened regularly. It took them 4 months to build a 12 by 12 room. Wrong insulation was put in the walls (lower R value). Floor was not insulated until most of job, including finished floor, was complete. Wiring for the telephone and cable was somehow accomplished after drywall and molding were up. Finished concrete work was not done correctly, and looks terrible. Follow through was not a strength; window mullions were never installed. All they wanted was their payment, did not care about quality.
Description of Work: Family room addition about 12x12, with vaulted ceiling, to house where a screened-in porch used to be. Removed old concrete slab, dug and poured new crawl space for the 1 story addition. Also did work on basement ceiling, removing old ceiling and installing new drywall, and installed 8 new can lights.

They did an amazing job. Luke was the salesman, very accommodating, easy to talk to, and took plenty of time to consult with me on the possibilities I had on this project. Always reachable and helpful. He never got tired of my many, many inquiries about estimates or on different approaches. It was a pleasure to work with Luke on planning this work. The work itself was done and coordinated by Richard, the foreman. I have no words to describe how much I appreciate his effectiveness, directness, and reliability. The work was completed in 6 weeks. Richard was always very prompt on all my requests, very good listener, and very patient. He spent a lot of time going through possibilities with me while I was deciding what I wanted to do. All the work performed by his people is at the highest standard, and the end result is gorgeous. Because they work so fast, make sure you check work every day, to change what you don't like before they get to next phase, when it can be too late.
Description of Work: I've made a new master bath in adjacent small office and converted the old bath into a walk in closet. Also, covered the old bath doorway in the bedroom, removed old wallpaper and painted master bedroom. Installed buster pressure pump for water. Removed backyard wooden patio.

We found NR through Angie's List. They were very professional from start to finish. Their salesperson was knowledgeable and their project managers were available by cell phone constantly throughout the project. The workmen kept the space as clean as possible and were always respectful. The project turned out beautifully and almost everything is perfect. I highly recommend them for any project. Unlike most contractors where you're barely speaking at the end, these guys were great to deal with. I'd hire them again tomorrow (and just might)!
Description of Work: NR gutted three rooms (kitchen, dining room and bedroom) to create a kitchen to our architect's specs. We also remodeled the bathroom. This included demolition, drywall, electrical, plumbing, hardwood floors, appliance install, tile, insulation, HVAC and various other projects. Finished project is a large kitchen/DR area with a wet bar and a small marble bath.

Luke was our main contact for the proposal. Unlike all the other general contractors we met, Neighborhood was the only firm we spoke with that had a salesperson; most times we met with the owner of the company. With that in mind it felt sorta "salesy" at times. We met with Luke before our final drawings had been made. He told me then that his proposal would be done within a couple of days of receiving our final drawings. It took more that a couple of days to get his bid and it included items that were discussed in our first meeting but removed in the final drawings. So when I got his proposal (which was the most difficult and complicated one presented to us) I was really unclear whether the price matched what was described in the proposal. To me it was a major detail that was overlooked. I would have rather worked with the project manager from the beginning. I just think it would have been easier for me.

Response from Neighborhood Remodelers
WE CERTAINLY DID NOT "DROP" THIS CUSTOMER. LUKE WENT OUT TO THEIR HOME FOR A SECOND VISIT WITH OUR ARCHITECT AND PROJECT FOREMAN WITH EVERY INTENTION OF PROCEEDING WITH THIS PROJECT. AFTER THIS MEETING OUR ARCHITECT CHECKED ZONING AND DISCOVERED SOME ADDITIONAL WORK THAT WAS REQUIRED ACCORDING TO CITY CODE. THE CUSTOMER THEN TOLD US OUR PRICES WERE TOO HIGH, DUE TO THE EXTRA MASONRY WORK REQUIRED BY LAW. THEY HAVE NOT RETURNED OUR MESSAGES SINCE THEY FOUND OUT ABOUT THE ADDITIONAL COSTS. WE WOULD NEVER DROP A CUSTOMER OR FAIL TO CALL SOMEONE AFTER WE TOOK THE TIME TO ARRANGE A SECOND MEETING AND PROCEEDED TO BEGIN MAKING PROJECT PLANS AND CHECKING CODES.

The experience was outstanding from start to finish. We found every member of Neighborhood to be professional, helpful, and hard-working from our initial contact with Aaron, the sales rep, to the administrative staff (Kerin and Sam), to the incredible crew. If problems came up, and they did, we would inform them and they fixed it immediately. The bathroom looks amazing - everything is just perfect - superior quality work. But what amazed me the most was how much they helped in the planning and designing phase without charging extra. Kerin was simply incredible. She would make fabulous suggestions for stores, tiles, fixtures etc., and would help us find what we wanted at considerable discounts. I don't know if we could have made our bathroom as beautiful as it is without her (they should give her a raise immediately). THE FIRST CONTRACTOR WHO COMMENCED THE REMODELING WAS OUR WORST NIGHTMARE. AFTER FIRING THE CONTRACTOR, WE DISCOVERED NEIGHBORHOOD REMODELERS. WE INTERVIEWED ABOUT 10 COMPANIES, AND THEY WERE BY FAR THE MOST REASONABLE AND PROFESSIONAL. THEY NOT ONLY ACCEPTED THE FIRST CONTRACTOR'S NUMEROUS CONSTRUCTION MISTAKES, BUT DID A GREAT JOB ON THE REMAINING WORK. LUKE WAS OUR COMPANY CONTACT AND HAS BEEN A DREAM TO WORK WITH ALONG WITH THE FOREMAN RICHARD, AND THE OFFICE STAFF KERIN. I HAVE RECOMMENDED THEM TO A FRIEND AND SHE HAS HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE - PROFESSIONAL, COURTEOUS, RESPONSIVE, AND DILIGENT.
Description of Work: CONSTRUCTED AN ADDITION TO OUR HOME WHICH INCLUDED EXPANSION OF EXISTING BASEMENT, ENTIRE NEW KITCHEN, THREE SEASON ROOM, DECK, FAMILY ROOM, AND A MASTER-BEDROOM SUITE WITH A BATHROOM.
